How Paxlovid for Covid-19 Works

- The antiviral, Paxlovid (Nirmatrelvir / Ritonavir) is a medication used to treat Covid-19. Although the SARS-CoV-2 virus has mutated over the past few years, Paxlovid is still effective to help reduce severity & the need for hospitalization during a Covid-19 infection.

I took Paxlovid twice now, but I did notice a change in my symptoms from just the first dose taken. I feel less of the sinus pressure, and hope to feel better soon.

I didn’t notice a change until I took the night dose. My fever left but I still had painful sore throat and chills. Paxlovid seems to have a progression I felt better each day and by day three I was nearly symptom free and more importantly pain free. I was also given muscle relaxers. My body was in so much pain and my headache was criminal before I got treated

I managed to not get COVID until now... on vacation in Japan. Luckily, I was able to find a doctor to prescribe me Paxlovid here. Hopefully I feel better soon and can enjoy my vacation. Cool to hear that it works by stopping the virus from replicating further - hopefully this means I can test negative sooner!

@@Rich.Aardvark Felt like it stopped my COVID in its tracks and I got better more quickly than I otherwise would've. By the time I was on my last day, I felt normal. But, after I was done with the Paxlovid, I got slightly sick again (I don't think 5 days is long enough) but only for a couple days and only very slightly. It really did work wonders.

Your experience seems to match mine. Never had COVID until this week. Knew it was COVID the minute my throat got scratchy, as I was exposed to someone with it days earlier. Got tested, confirmed case. Started Paxlovid + Prednisone immediately as directed by my doctor. First night (and immediately following my first dose) I could barely sleep because the sinus pressure was so intense. Woke up the next morning feeling only slightly off. By the next evening I felt 80% normal. I'm super happy with the results so far.
The only side effect I've experienced so far is a constant bitter flavor in my mouth, it's especially strong about an hour after taking a dose, and lasts 4-6 more hours. Small tradeoff for the relief it's provided.
Requires a longer duration dose pack, say 7 to 10 days due to 35-55% rebound, not the 8-20% as earlier thought.

In the US everyone should get a rebate card from the Paxlovid website. Doesn’t matter if they are trying to charge you the $5 copay or $1,500. The rebate card covers 100% of the cost.

My insurance didn't cover it they ask me 1000$ at CVS. My Dr gave me a coupon and I got it for free
When it takes only one dose to feel relief, pretty amazing, it's day 3 and no sore throat, no chest pain, no breathing problems, just a mild tiredness when 4 days ago I was completely bedridden - I'm on the lower dose and it still kicked a Also there was no rebound !

I'm never touching paxlovid again. The bad taste side effect in particular had an extreme effect on me, I was vomiting from the rancid taste and ended up having a panic attack.

It does work
I had a severe Covid reaction in 2021 that lasted 6 weeks and at one point I was on oxygen and at the worst days I couldn't walk or barely move. I got Covid again recently and taking Paxlovid and its a night and day difference. I'm already up moving again and my voice is back. Although the Paxlovid aftertaste is real I'd rather that than die.

Not worth it..just tough it out.. it's not bad
I started taking paxlovid Thursday night. Symptoms started thurs morning, positive test at night. It is sat night. I’m 90% better but have diarrhea. Should I continue? How bout decrease dose to 1 and 1?
I would call into your provider who prescribed it! There can be a phenomenon called ‘Paxlovid rebound’ as well, where Covid-19 symptoms come back after one stops taking the medication.

Wasn't it shown that the rebound is unrelated to Paxlovid itself and is just something that happens in some percent of covid cases?@@ScientistSwanda
