Here's the deal with this video: This was very early on during the commercial introduction of the synthesizer, which at that time was a giant collection of boxes connected with wires that would take up a significant portion of a room, there are no "portable" keyboards at this point. So to see a man literally WEARING a keyboard in 1972 would have been beyond bizarre, and I believe Edgar was the first one to do it. And then on top of that, to take this "novelty" instrument that up until then was only known for making weird space sound effects and to actually integrate it into a funky jazz instrumental - now you're witnessing something truly unique. Add the keyboardist's ability to play roughly half the instruments in the piece, and now you've got a music video that's still being rocked out to nearly 50 years later, just legendary.

Not only that, but the fact that he was able to get those sounds out of an ARP 2600, especially live, is still mindblowing so many years later. Not an easy thing to pull off

Now you need to react to his song "Free Ride" and "Hangin' Around" off of the same album, "They Only Come Out at Night", that came out in 1972. "Frankenstein" is just an instrumental and a big hit on the radio, the other 2 songs he does sing on. This song is just over 4 minutes long on the album, but when he does it live it can go on quite a bit longer. Had that baby on 8-track back in the day.

Brings me back to my days runnin' atop a chopped down '47 Knucklehead, trippin' on acid, and haulin' a couple of 38s named Shannon & Raven. Best damn rock instrumental EVER, ...period! "Trippy!" Ya' gotta love the 70s! (You're right! It's called "Frankenstein," because of the arduous editing that went into the song; it became a MONSTER when it was pieced together in the studio.)

OH LAWD you down to the 70s FUNK y dawg oh yea. .Originally called The Double Drum Song and named after too much tape in the studio after recording that had been cut up for editing was great big mess and drummer Chuck Ruff said it looked like Frankenstein and then the tape of the recording jams had came out with this instrumental, and Edgar decided to give it the name Frankenstein ..It was not even going to be released but it was added to the album ''They Only Come Out at Night '' and Frankenstein hit No 1 .. Edgar out of necessity was tired of standing behind the keyboard and he took a guitar strap and put it on his keyboard to be able to move on stage and that was and invention that led they way for many others to follow into the 80s Synthesizer Era. ..

My hubby agrees with you about the "drug" reference! He said he was on the last six months of his tour of duty that started in 1969 and included a tour of Vietnam. He and his friends were heavily into pot and LSD and actually set up two speakers in their rented house and blasted this song and he said that the effect on his brain was almost instantaneous! He told me that a couple of years later while driving to work, that song came on and he could hardly drive! It just messed his head up! He never believed in flashbacks until that day. He said that for years he could not listen to that without him just almost flipping out! Luckily he's gotten over that but, WOW! Must of been some powerful stuff!

I remember this when it came out. Early use of synthesizers was a mixed bag of results. His use of the keyboard which gave partial use of the synthesizer, is excellent. The wild synth part was showing some of the creative ways to use it.

Yes, Edgar is the guy with the white hair. He and his brother Johnny are both albinos. Growing up, they couldn't play outside like other children because, being albinos, they were very sensitive to sunlight, so they learned music to pass the time. Another famous song by Edgar Winter is "Free Ride", which features Edgar singing.

"Is that the reason why the song's called 'Frankenstein' because he's playing multiple instruments? "
Actually, it's called "Frankenstein" due to the amount of editing that did when Edgar Winter Group originally recorded the song, they'd done so much editing and splicing of this song that they'd said that they felt like they were assembling "Frankenstein's Monster"
