Yeah, it's because everything is in extremely exaggerated digitized graphics and has like 10 frames per animation... For some reason, especially in the '90s-2000's it seems like almost all non-video game media portrayed video-games like this even though there were actually very few games that went this route because it looks & plays like shit XD... Gotta say it does have some kitschy charm to it, now, though.
This is, unironically, my favorite Saturn game. Granted, I don't have a whole lot of Saturn games (and probably won't sadly, since they're getting so darn expensive now), but this game alone wowed me so much that I pull out the Saturn once in a while just to play it.
I don't know about anybody else but I love this game! I've played this so much back then and every time I did I always felt like I was always on a new adventure even if I had beaten it before because every new game you start is a different layout. Never got bored with this game much. I just loved exploring and enjoying the atmosphere all around! The music is also very good especially the Volcanic Cave music at 31:30! My only gripe is how clunky your character moves especially when turning around but it's a minor thing that can easily be ignored and getting used to. If anyone is checking this out for a review I would highly recommend giving it a try when you can and if it's re-released on any virtual console format (fingers crossed!) then I would get this immediately!
Definitely blinded by nostalgia here, it has always been shit no matter how you look at it, way to ambitious for its time. Shame though. I mean this is the closest you could get to a 90's Dark Souls.
I'm here because of AVGN. I enjoyed his video on this and Super Hydlide, but during the Virtual Hydlide review I couldn't help thinking "This actually looks kind of fun, or at least charming." It definitely had Dark Souls vibes before Dark Souls existed. I think I'd enjoy playing it if I could!
Virtual Hydlide might give you motion-sickness, but somehow it just wouldn't be anywhere near as endearing without its chunky 90s digitzed sprites, tacky FMV, and the hilariously awful costuming of the main character. It's like every wrong thing it does just makes it all the more appealing. Personally, I love it.
I may be in the minority but, despite its defective gameplay, I find Hydlide to be a memorable and worthy entry for Sega Saturn. Beginning with the cool FMV, the game has a unique atmosphere and look enabled by atmospheric music and beautiful backgrounds and settings. I think people forget that we're talking about 1995 here and yet I've seen people say that it was dated for 1995; I call BS...hard. The game may not be great to play but it has a memorable visual design.
Just bought It on Ebay for 12 bucks. Considering It's is an exclusive, I can't wait for playing it, no matter how bad are the reviews. Thanks a lot for the gameplay. It looks pretty charismatic and a kind of a cult game.
FYI, on every map you'll find green grassy areas on the overworld that have a secrect lift you can go down and you'll always find a chest with secret equipment in it. The thunder sword is my favourite, you can also find a fairy shield and lots of other stuff. There is always a particular type of tree and a few pink flowers around the lift. Happy hunting
This game is like watching a fantasy movie from the 80s, like Willow, Dark Crystal, Legend, Conan the Barbarian, Dragonslayer, Krull, Labyrinth, and many others. Even the entire duration of 1:47 was similar to the length of those same movies.
This was a pretty ambitious title for the Saturn. Almost like an MMO and in 1995 no less. Saturn was a pretty good console; miss playing Astal, Clockwork Knight, Bug, Golden Axe the Duel among others.
Say what you will, but I think this is a very cool game. Not necessarily saying it’s a GOOD game, but it’s definitely a cool one. And I really like the music in it
People bashing this game don't understand how early it was; try inventing 3D action RPGs on a hard-to-program-for platform when all you have for reference is Star Fox and Doom.
I think my favorite memory of this game (aside from the music being pretty boss) is going up to a tree - the wrong tree - and getting killed by bees in two seconds about a minute into the game. Good times.
I rented this game a good deal of times when I was young, I actually reached the last boss once, dealing 0 damage because 1- had no idea you needed special items and the faeries. 2 - never knew there was a bloody map button
I miss the days of playing daft games like this. You can enjoy that you don’t really understand the plot or the collectibles and the movement is a bit clunky etc. I agree with everyone too, great music. Overall fantastic game.
Totally unique game and concept that's always fun to replay and come back too. I remember the Mean Machine Sega review on this, they were pretty harsh on it back in the day...
1:00 Those fairies have some long, stick-looking arms... Edit: Gotta admit, procedurally generated overworld and a setup like this... This game was pretty far ahead for the time. Aged like milk, sure, but it probably would be pretty cool to play. I might consider giving it a go if given the opportunity.

This looks like the kind of video game you see in tv shows when a character is playing (in) a video game
+knuclear2010 Like Captain N's intro, or JD Roth popping out of a pipe in Mario 3? :D
like a public domain made for TV movie, or that really bad movie 'Arcade'.

The music and graphics looks great imo
this is uniroically great considering the date :). the magic lantern design (+other stuff) looks like an influence on souls games lighting
"enter if you want to die"
That sounds like a sign a 13 year old would put on his door to his room when he's trying way to hard to be edgy.
The kobolds sound so adorable...
this is a great game..my brother got me into it and downloded this cause it brings back great memory of this game
