- In this video we return to Falmouth to show a wonderful town walk steeped in history, interest and curiosity.
Falmouth was described in a book called ‘The King’s England - Cornwall’ by Arthur Mee written in 1937 as “Built up in a bay is the modern pleasure town of Falmouth ; but the real Falmouth lies back about its street running all the town’s length, with the grey houses and the church piled up behind it and alleyways slipping down on the other side to ancient wharves and quays. Along this street have rolled smugglers and preventive men, King’s sailors and privateersmen,for it led the way to the harbour which has sent our ships whenever there was an enemy to be fought, a prize to be won, or money to be made.”
Join us as we wander the streets, alleys and opes in search of the real Falmouth, with forgotten stories from it’s past, together with the usual blend of musings and merriment.

We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on RUclips, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!

We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
What is your dog’s name?

O my goodness me - I think that you have gone way above all expections this time. Living in Cornwall all my life and having been to Falmouth more times than I can recall I have just watched a film that I am ashamed to say I didn’t recognise the area’s you were in. Another interesting walk. I loved the old buildings and the tucked away back gardens. The doorway to the old building that now looks like a garden gnome entrance was interesting. Thanks again for taking me away to Cornwall again and enjoying I me with both of you. Pet doggie for me. 👟👟🌺🌸🌷💕

Such a contrast in Falmouth, as you have shown on your channel, with the old history side of the harbour, docks and town, against the leisure side around the headland towards Gyllyngvase beach.

I noticed your guide is by Peter Gilson. He taught geography when I attended Falmouth Gramner. Also Lawn Steps. I always knew it as Jackie Lawn Steps, I never knew why.
The book you purchased was also a film starring Ralph Fiennes, very enjoyable viewing. I liked hearing the singing in the background (Sounded like the Cornish anthem shanty?) when you were filming :-) (Janey).

So many interesting factual bits on this one! Great bookshop. I love cider, having discovered Blackthorn in bottles at an import shop some 30 years ago, before it became so popular here. It was a special moment when I ordered my first pint in a pub near Oxford, and they asked me "Dry or Sweet?" Jacob's ladder reminds me of the stairs from "The Pit" parking lot up to campus at San Diego State University; it's be compared to climbing one of the Towers from The Lord of the Rings, lol. You definitely earned your french fries (oops...chips). :)

St George's Arcade is where I saw, as a child, Grease with my brother, and the first Ghostbusters movie, in the cinema that was there. :-)

Parts of Falmouth really remind me of the Ventnor area on the IOW. They also have a Jacob's ladder in Bonchurch very similar to the steps you were climbing in Falmouth! Amazing what ancient bits you can find if you are really looking for them hidden under ivy. So little left of the old places now, but if you look up you can see old painted signs on shops and buildings and if you look down you can see old walls still hidden away everywhere you go. Sadly I noticed that an awful lot of the walls in Falmouth have been subject to the usual graffiti artists which are so common everywhere you go now. I wonder if Bald Chris knows he's famous now?! Love all your old books you have & seeing things as they used to be. x J x

Well this is most bizaare...I've been looking through my Cornwall photos from trip in 2009 for several weeks. Found a bunch of new birds in some of them taken in Falmouth one a lifer a black legged kittiwake. Then today I'm looking at one I'd taken a photo of, a plastic? seagull carrying away a pasty that says "Hey get ya own pasty!" that looks like it was part of the shop window display for Seasalt Cornwall shop in Falmouth. I ran off a 4 x 6 of it the other day and put it on the frig. Today, I had ran off a copy of the photo again, but enlarged it to 8 x 10, took a photo my husband had taken of me during the pandemic holding our cat. I cut out the photo of us and positioned it on the 8 x 10 so it would look like the seagull was above us. Then I put it in the scanner bed and made a copy. Then I turn on RUclips and see your video on the homepage Falmouth. Falmouth is where we stayed for about 5 days while traveling around Cornwall to places like Gwennap, Feock, Perranarworthal, Kea before going to St. Ives. My Dad's grandfather had immigrated to the USA with his siblings , parents, aunts and uncles. Some of them had lived in Falmouth. Your video in front of the Seasalt Cornwall shop looks like the same blue sky backdrop for the seagull making away with a pasty back in 2009 when we were there. I wonder if the seagull is still there? We loved your video of Falmouth. I remember some of these places, but a lot more I didn't see. You mentioned a Lawn family Jack Lawn I think in your video. In going through my photos of the church and cemetery in Gwennap I see a photo I took of of stones for a James LAWN of Lanner, died May 22?, 1884 aged 73 yrs and wife Jenifer Lawn, says relict? of the above d Mar 23? 1837 79 yrs. The stones were beautiful and it was a pretty view and I took a photo of them, but not related to me. I love the door handles you show in the video, the crab, the terrier, a trowel? I'm afraid if I had found that bookstore you went in I would have never come out again. Loved you tour with all the history. I was meant to see this video today. Must be the Cornwall ancestors at work. It also looks like you downloaded this video today? Talk about coincidences.
Wow! What an interesting read! We have also been to Gwennap churchyard, but I can't remember seeing a gravestone to the Lawn family! i agree about the book store - brilliant idea!! oh, and we publish a new video most Fridays, Sarah :)
There's a great book called 'White Gold' about the history of the barbary pirates and how Cornwall and Devon were important sources of slaves taken back to modern day Libya and Tunisia. Penryn is a much earlier settlement than Falmouth because it was less exposed to the pirates. Chains were hung across the Fal between Falmouth and Penryn to give the people time to escape when the pirates came.
You never mentioned Operation Chariot, the memorial to the VC winners is on the Prince of Wales pier

Hi Sarah and Andrew, lovely walk, love the buildings and all the history your shared…the Jacob’s ladder must of been fun to climb! Interesting that it was built so close to the church and a pub too and not have any biblical reference to it must be because it was only 111 steps and I’m sure there must be more steps to reach to heaven…the gentleman was so sweet to say 135….totally loved this video…so cool I spotted a “Beatles” umbrella too! I was at boatbuilding college when Derek wrote these books, knew him well, sadly you didn't mention some of the places I have lost track of like the tomb halfway down a stairway, Perhaps he covered that in another book?
