That first close-up on the alligator's snout was incredible. It got my heart racing. Some part of my mind was telling me fight or flight, I've never felt that before from a RUclips video. I'm so surprised how relaxed and almost docile the crocodile and alligator were with you. Gave me goosebumps!

I live in Saltwater Crocodile country in Darwin Australia. We also have smaller freshwater Crocs who are relatively non aggressive and far smaller. It amazes me that an animal that size is so non aggressive, and that they are cohabitating together. This goes against all the typical behaviour of our salties. What a privilege to get so close to such impressive animals. They are beauties.
This is a chance that no one should be willing to take. In Seconds... his life can be gone and nothing can be done about it. An encounter with a Gator is always unforgiving. Id change to a non suicidal line of profession.
Up until recently there was plenty of food to go around in the Florida Everglades so perhaps they evolved with no need to be so aggressive with so much abundance. However now with the rise invasive specie in the swamp this could change.
As a third-generation Floridian, I appreciate your videography and narration. The largest alligator I have the pleasure of being around was only about10 feet long. I live in the Nature Coast area now and we have several alligators that venture out to the Gulf, one that is fond of following my wife and I while we wade fish. They are amazing creatures and deserve respect, as you mentioned.

That was amazingly awesome. I live here in Florida all my life and I just love going out and seeing them in the wild the alligators and crocodiles. I just like to sit and watch them sit on the banks or see them the water. It's really something to see em in person especially when they're big. It blows my mind every time I see them. I love them so.
Awesome footage. Great job! As a nearly lifelong central Floridian & avid fisherman/outdoorsman since 1969, I also have a lot of personal experience with alligators. One thing I would like to point out when attempting to educate people about the differences between the American Alligator & American Crocodile, that I believe is a great help for differentiating the two species, is that a gator's snout looks much like a duck's bill. And if I'm not mistaken, wildlife biologists actually call it a bill. I think the gator's "bill" would really stand out in the mind's of people trying to learn the differences in appearance.

I did not pass my Boy Scouts 2nd Class badge to become a 1st Class Boyscout bcz to get my Swimming Merit Badge, the test was to drop me in the middle of a pond and swim back to land. The water was murky and you could not see the bottom. THAT WAS A HARD N FOR ME!!! Keep the Swimming Merit Badge, i am ok with being alive with all my limbs as a 2nd Class boyscout.

Most intriguing footage of gators/Crocs I have ever seen. Normally voids of them are from the pov from bank or boat so only see top of the animal. In the water with crov and gator with this pov had me in awe. So beautiful. Amazing !

I’m surprised only you and me commented on this! A decade (10 yrs) is NOT a long time at all to be studying and learning how to move around these apex predators. You have to consider that the first few years he wasn’t swimming with them. It was probably more of learning about them on his terms. I just think this was really really stupid. Especially with no oxygen. But, then again, some people don’t mind having around 60 large teeth that produce over 4,000 lbs of pressure per square inch, tear into their flesh while 1,000 lbs of apex animal brutally rips and rolls their body under water, tearing off limbs. Hopefully, for their sake they drown rather quickly after the first deathrolll… But, HEY!! At least they were doing what they loved 🥰

I find this so interesting you could never be this close to a wild lion or tiger but actually in the water with a crocodile or alligator you got less chance of surviving.

Honestly its just luck that hes not being attacked. Hes a professional and can read their behavior better than most but even with the warning signs of an aggresive animal like that in the water there is no chance of escape. Also the element of random encounters such as bumping in to a hidden croc or gator adds more dangerous luck. It just happens to be at the time of filming that those animanls werent hungry or feeling aggressive, which i am happy to see.

In the 70s, when I was tiny and obsessed with alligators, the American Crocodile had fewer than a dozen known nesting sites. When i lived in Florida in the late 80s, early 90s, seeing a wild croc was unheard of. Even many of the parks did not have a native croc in their pens. As soon as COVID dies down to a manageable level, I've got to get down for a visit.

This is so awesome. I find it interesting that these American crocs have a totally different temperament than the Nile. Is there a reason for the difference in temperament? Also are these the largest crocodilians you’ve encountered in the wild? Hilarious thumbnail btw
The temperament difference is because of the different animals they have to deal with. Even though the two species are similar in size, American Crocodiles mainly prey on fish, turtles, snakes, racoons, and on the larger end, deer. They don't interact much with other big and aggressive animals like cougars and bears. The largest animals they might run into conflict with are jaguars and anacondas, but those are rare, and jaguars tend to limit their predation to caimans. Nile Crocodiles on the other hand regularly have to have the vigor to take down much larger and much more aggressive animals like zebras, wildebeest, and cape buffalo. They also prey on painted dogs, cheetahs, and hyenas when they get the chance. On top of that, they have to survive frequent and violent conflicts with lions, hippos, and elephants. Their temperaments then end up matching the aggression necessary to survive in their respective habitats.
Isn't this in Florida? Jaguars & Anacondas are in and around the Amazon Rainforest. Same goes for the caiman. The only ones you find around Florida are bc of exotic pet trade (released). Even then their population isn't plentiful.
@@MagekyouGeass Actually, Before 1900, the jaguar could be found in the United States as far north as Colorado and as far west as California. Aside from an individual in Arizona which was photographed in 2002, the big cat has largely disappeared from North America. However, it wouldn't be a total surprise to spot a jaguar in Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico, states that border Mexico, because jaguars, obviously don't read maps, but it's very rare, as people don't tolerate such a big cat living amongst them.

There’s nothing special about the circumstances which allows him to be “safer”. It’s incredibly dangerous even with Chris’s vast experience. His “safety protocol” is excellent knowledge and understanding of crocodilians and their behavior. He knows the best way to act around them, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe. And his successful encounters that are peaceful aren’t due to some fancy trick.
Wow! What a footage. Just wanna know if that wider design of the jaws from an alligator exerts higher bite forces, compared with a crocodile's? I know the saltwater croc has the largest extant bite force, but may be for its huge size. How about force per kg?
Bite force in crocodilians is usually proportionate to body size and largely independent of snout shape. Instead, snout shape will determine how well a species can handle those pressures, therefore having implications for behavior (can also affect things like side to side/up down movement when attempting to bite or locate food and sense surroundings). The Alligator and American croc will have similar bite forces at the same size, but the alligator’s blunter snout and teeth will resist the stresses from biting that hard better. That makes it somewhat safer for it eat stronger/harder prey and less likely to suffer major structural injuries during combat with other alligators.

I find this so interesting you could never be this close to a wild lion or tiger but actually in the water with a crocodile or alligator you got less chance of surviving.

Carry a hand grenade man, jokes aside leave that job immediately. Such biological hazard are hard to contained. Bring a spear gun if u must or a flare.

Honestly its just luck that hes not being attacked. Hes a professional and can read their behavior better than most but even with the warning signs of an aggresive animal like that in the water there is no chance of escape. Also the element of random encounters such as bumping in to a hidden croc or gator adds more dangerous luck. It just happens to be at the time of filming that those animanls werent hungry or feeling aggressive, which i am happy to see.

In the 70s, when I was tiny and obsessed with alligators, the American Crocodile had fewer than a dozen known nesting sites. When i lived in Florida in the late 80s, early 90s, seeing a wild croc was unheard of. Even many of the parks did not have a native croc in their pens. As soon as COVID dies down to a manageable level, I've got to get down for a visit.

This is so awesome. I find it interesting that these American crocs have a totally different temperament than the Nile. Is there a reason for the difference in temperament? Also are these the largest crocodilians you’ve encountered in the wild?

The temperament difference is because of the different animals they have to deal with. Even though the two species are similar in size, American Crocodiles mainly prey on fish, turtles, snakes, racoons, and on the larger end, deer. They don't interact much with other big and aggressive animals like cougars and bears. The largest animals they might run into conflict with are jaguars and anacondas, but those are rare, and jaguars tend to limit their predation to caimans.
Nile Crocodiles on the other hand regularly have to have the vigor to take down much larger and much more aggressive animals like zebras, wildebeest, and cape buffalo. They also prey on painted dogs, cheetahs, and hyenas when they get the chance. On top of that, they have to survive frequent and violent conflicts with lions, hippos, and elephants.
Their temperaments then end up matching the aggression necessary to survive in their respective habitats.

Isn't this in Florida? Jaguars & Anacondas are in and around the Amazon Rainforest. Same goes for the caiman. The only ones you find around Florida are bc of exotic pet trade (released). Even then their population isn't plentiful.
@@MagekyouGeass Actually, Before 1900, the jaguar could be found in the United States as far north as Colorado and as far west as California. Aside from an individual in Arizona which was photographed in 2002, the big cat has largely disappeared from North America. However, it wouldn't be a total surprise to spot a jaguar in Texas, Arizona, or New Mexico, states that border Mexico, because jaguars, obviously don't read maps, but it's very rare, as people don't tolerate such a big cat living amongst them.

I saw this when the vid first came out, but I’m revisiting and just have to say that this is literally not true.
There’s nothing special about the circumstances which allows him to be “safer”. It’s incredibly dangerous even with Chris’s vast experience.
His “safety protocol” is excellent knowledge and understanding of crocodilians and their behavior.
He knows the best way to act around them, but that doesn’t mean it’s safe.
And his successful encounters that are peaceful aren’t due to some fancy trick.

Wow! What a footage. Just wanna know if that wider design of the jaws from an alligator exerts higher bite forces, compared with a crocodile's? I know the saltwater croc has the largest extant bite force, but may be for its huge size. How about force per kg?
Bite force in crocodilians is usually proportionate to body size and largely independent of snout shape.
Instead, snout shape will determine how well a species can handle those pressures, therefore having implications for behavior (can also affect things like side to side/up down movement when attempting to bite or locate food and sense surroundings).
The Alligator and American croc will have similar bite forces at the same size, but the alligator’s blunter snout and teeth will resist the stresses from biting that hard better.
That makes it somewhat safer for it eat stronger/harder prey and less likely to suffer major structural injuries during combat with other alligators.
