I built one similar for my chickens. On the end of the water bar (before the cap) I added a ball valve, that way if you have to do maintenance on the system or it simply just needs cleaned out, you can valve off the barrel, and then drain JUST the bar instead of the entire barrel needing drained and you can do so with the control of that valve, I usually drain into a bucket or something. I also have a sealed top barrel, and just open one of the holes and also installed a very fine screen over it to keep bugs and debris out. Great system all in all. I have plans to experiment with a basin heater this winter as I live in West Virginia.
That’s pretty sweet. You could in theory install a float valve to a hose or to irrigation that automatically fills the bucket when it gets low. We have ours like that with automation that I can control from my cell phone.
How do you keep the water from growing bacteria over time? I give my chickens water with probiotics and a bit of honey. They are SUPER healthy. I only had to buy probiotic powder once as I transfer a bit of the old water into the new water along with a bit of honey to feed the probiotics. They have fresh water every few days
That is an awesome idea I loved it. I believe I am going to use this system with my ducks and chickens. Yes you earned another subscriber with me. Thank you for your ideas I would have never thought of that.
Great video...earned a subscriber. I had a similar system for a year, but it froze in the winter and was also susceptible to bugs that like standing water. I added a small 12v DC pump to keep the water moving. Hopefully that will keep it from freezing in the winter. Running a long extension cord now, but hoping to try solar power soon.
Great idea! I would like to place the rain barrel outside the coop and bring the water inside the coop. Covering the rain barrow with a mesh or filter would keep unwanted things out of the barrel.
I love this! Thank you for sharing! I’m trying to plan out how I want to build my chicken coop and I love this idea but modify it to where it’s mounted inside the wall of the coop and have the holding tank outside the coop so I can easily refill it.
I just added these but they are not what I expected, the yellow nipple and spring come off super easy when the cup is knocked off . The spring tension isn't just right no water will flow .
Thanks for the video. Although, I heard (based upon Amazon reviews) that the plastic wastering cups got bad reviews. I'm going to try your design, except replace the cheap yellow/red cups with the metal Horizontal Side Mount Chicken Watering Nipples. I want these to last at least a few years and I think your design is perfect for them...best.
Let me know how it works out. Our chickens never really got the hang of them 😑 I make a watering bucket with the watering nipples and they didn’t really use that either. But I have not tried what you are talking about. I built a new bigger coop and have not installed a rain barrel to it yet.
Looks great! I have something similar in my coop but my watering cups are in a 4" PVC pipe. I'm going to transition to a system like this to incorporate the rain barrel. Did you end up having any leaking without gluing the small PVC pieces together?
Howdy! They sell little thermostats that turn on a little aquarium heater once the temp. drops below a certain point (let's say 44 F) and will heat the water up to a set temp., like 50F.
We made one of these for our chickens and we love it except now we’re noticing there is a weird film on top of the water and there are dark spots forming on the side walls above the water level and it smells pretty bad 😳we put in 1 tablespoon per gallon of apple cider vinegar when we started it. do you have any suggestions? Have you ever experienced this with your waterer? We also have a secure lid
If you seal a lid you’ll create a vacuum and the water won’t flow. Put a straw in a drink, then seal off the top with your finger and lift. Liquid comes with it. There’s a valve closure attached to the little yellow piece that the water pressure keeps in place until the chicken pecks at it.
@@benjamin593 I have since installed the water system for my quail. The question was due to a previous set up that had major leaking issues. This one is perfect.
People do this type of system with a tank heater & circulation pump in winter to prevent freezing. With the pump, you have to have a hose go from the end, back to the barrel, so the water can flow through. When it’s flowing like a little stream, it helps keep water from freezing in the pvc & hose. The tank heater prevents the water in the rain barrel from freezing
Hi, I have a lot of ducks and need to automate their feeding and water more than I am currently and I found this video while googling the setup of the poultry waterers you are using, but the rainwater part got me interested and I wondered how that works? Is it simply the amount of rain that actually falls directly into the blue barrel you are using in the video? Or do you use something with a larger surface area to collect the rain and funnel it into the barrel? (Like a sloped roof or a stretched tarp or something?) And how much rain do you get where you live and how many ducks does one barrel provide water for and does the rain provide enough water all the time or do you have to top it up with water from your water supply, or tank or well etc? Also some other questions (sorry there are a few!) Also do you know if some of those waterers can be directly connected up to a hose and tap so if a barrel was empty the ducks could get their water directly from my main water supply, (I am probably just going to order a whole lot from aliexpress or similar Chinese supplier And planned to just set them up on a direct connection to my water outlet which is what I was researching when I found this video) but as I am in a rural location on well water It would be interesting to use rain water too. Also how quickly did your ducks figure them out and if my assumption is correct that the water comes out as long as the bird is pushing the trigger down, have any of your ducks figured out how to fill the whole ‘cup’ by holding it down for longer? And generally how well has this worked for drinking water for your ducks? And have you tried any other automatic watering systems for ducks that provide deeper drinking water or swimming water and if so were they any use or did the ducks just dirty the water so fast you had to manually clean out anyway? Thanks, sorry so many questions
hey, just saw your video from 2017, i was using 5gal bucket with nipples on the bottom but they last about 4months the chickens use them for swings, how is your diesign holding up over the long run?
I would use a ball valve at the bottom for the hose hookup not a traditional spigot. That way small bits of leaf from storms don’t clog and slow the flow down. That’s a pain. No water quality issues. But I moved my coop location so we have not used this as much as we used to.
Thanks. I'm in East Tennessee. I'm 3 years in with my chickens (about to refresh my stock) and looking for a better watering system. Preferably something that will hold up in the winter months as well. I'm close enough to power - so I have that option.
I am wondering if because where I live we get extreme heat during summer, so containers of standing water develops algae and mold quickly, so this may be something you can use during summer months depending on your location? I have tried many things to prevent the slime on the edge of their water containers from forming but it's no use. I'd have to be able to dismantle and scrub all the pipe fittings and the barrel twice a week at least. It's a great idea but maybe better for some areas than others
Jeremy Strickland hey neighbor! The barrel in this vid is no longer in use. We have a new larger coop and I haven’t put a barrel on it yet. I do think that would be a good idea though. Right now we have to hull water down. I was thinking about a 2 barrel setup for the coop. The 4 barrel for the garden is crazy. Something simple would be good.
Jeremy Strickland we too are in middle TN...Scott County. Nice to find other TN folks with RUclips channels. Our neighbor to the west is Big South Fork Park. Tim @ Cliffside Acres

I’m interested in something like this! How do you control it to your phone?
How do you keep your watering system from freezing up during the winter?
Add some car anti-freeze (JUST JOKING! DONT DO IT) xd
Washing machine hose might be easier to find than a double female hose.

A ball valve at the barrel for servicing and a ball valve at the end to drain in case you have freezing temperatures.
Genius!!
That's my comment!🙂
Auto food and water systems ~ Amaze!!😉👍👍

Thank you so much for sharing and attaching the required tools.I appreciate you.
I installed the orange water cups directly into the barrel, saves a bit of money.
Brian Sessums nice! That’s easy.
Dose it work?
I like that the design is very simple. Easy to make it & repair if ever needed
Great for the summer, still have to water everyday in the winter.
Looks awesome! Thanks for sharing. I want to try to do this for my chickens
A mesh with a kind of bungie cord to cover the top of the barrel in order to have less leafs or dirt falling into it would be perfect.
Great video...earned a subscriber. I had a similar system for a year, but it froze in the winter and was also susceptible to bugs that like standing water. how is that solar setup working? I am building something similar to this but I'm in the mountains so freezes happen
You can add a submersible aquarium heater along with the pump to keep water warm
Great idea! I would like to place the rain barrel outside the coop and bring the water inside the coop. Covering the rain barrow with a mesh or filter would keep unwanted things out of the barrel.
Can’t the lid be put over the top?
How did that work bringing it inside?
This looks great. i will be doing the same to my coop.
Just going to add a mesh screen over the rain bucket to cut down on the sitting water for bugs.
I love this! Thank you for sharing! I’m trying to plan out how I want to build my chicken coop and I love this idea but modify it to where it’s mounted inside the wall of the coop and have the holding tank outside the coop so I can easily refill it.

You did not mention the pvc connector to the chicken waterer that you are using. What is it?
I just added these but they are not what I expected, the yellow nipple and spring come off super easy when the cup is knocked off . The spring tension isn't just right no water will flow .
I would love to incorporate the little roofs to feed the water barrel that is my thought. Nice little video sir.
Hi, thanks for the video. Do the cups get slimey and dirty?

Maybe you could add a floating solar fountain pump to keep the mosquitos out.
How do you keep rain barrel water algae clean?

Great setup! Do you cover the rain barrel to keep mosquitos from breeding when it isn't raining or is that just a non-issue?
Oh, great catch! Yes absolutly, I have a lid on it. I should have shown that in the video great point 👍
Love your system! What do you do to keep the water from freezing? We live in cold Michigan
Howdy! They sell little thermostats that turn on a little aquarium heater once the temp. drops below a certain point (let's say 44 F) and will heat the water up to a set temp., like 50F.

Tiny amount of chlorine could help. That’s what we use at the water treatment plant
I just did the same set up it seems the cups are a bit empty at times but they are still getting water is that normal?
Great tips!
Hey! Love the system. How would you keep it from freezing? Us Canadians have that issue.
tractor supply makes submersible heaters.. that may work
Hey fantastic job ...I like ur family and life style...
How do you keep it from freezing
Awesome dude thanks!
The nipple cups are a little high for chickens. I would lower to a max of 6" off the ground or make a shelf for them to get up to them.
will they not damage the water hose with their beaks?
I am curious if gravity fed systems need a top to keep them sealed? I am wondering if they will drip constantly without it?
If you seal a lid you’ll create a vacuum and the water won’t flow. Put a straw in a drink, then seal off the top with your finger and lift. Liquid comes with it.
There’s a valve closure attached to the little yellow piece that the water pressure keeps in place until the chicken pecks at it.
@@benjamin593 I have since installed the water system for my quail. The question was due to a previous set up that had major leaking issues. This one is perfect.
I’m confused how the garden hose isn’t higher. How is the water getting to the outlet, with it not being set higher?
Have you had any issues with your water cups?? Leaking etc…
I would put a lid on the barrel to keep out debris put a rain gutter on the supply roof and run a 90 into the lid of the barrel
I like it now to figure out a winter system
Did u ever figure it out? Lol
@@Franktheplumber yeah its called my kids picked up a daily chore lol
People do this with tank heaters & another hose back to the barrel and a little pump to circulate the water in winter
How do you keep the system from freezing?
You can put electric heater in there
Hermosa granja, buen trabajo con los bebederos. Saludos desde Perú 👍🇵🇪✌️😷
How often do you have to clean this system from algae, slime, etc? Or does it stay pretty well maintained?
Is there anything you can add to keep that water from getting algae that won't hurt the chickens?
Does this system do well in the winter? Does the water freeze in the pvc?

How do you control the algie?
What did you use for glue?
That is such a great idea!
Do those cups get full of dirt?
I cant sleep well at night so thank you for these great vids that makes staying up must easyer and such awesome ideas

Use opaque containers.
How will that make a difference?
Add distilled (not with the mother) apple cider vinegar to the water. It is not only good for the birds, it prevents the algae from growing.
How much ACV?
Ha! What? Did not expect to see a pagerduty t-shirt on this kind of video, right on!
You're a cool guy. Great job bro!
Thank you! I am working on a new coop now. Stay tuned 👌🏻
Issue with mine is the yellow part is too hard to press for mine
How do they perform in freezing temps?
My guess is it freezes 😂
Man you did a cross cut on that chop saw very risky be careful. Your ducks and chickens need you!
Is there an update on this?
Good idea
Sysadmins on the farm. I see the pagerduty shirt.
Did you drill those holes? And if yes what size bit did you use? Fantastic video by the way!!! Love it!
If it helps anyone else, drill a 21/64 hole and use a 1/8 npt pipe tape. Better late than never
Eye protection! Yay!

I bought the same thing and what i found was the Tee's were not schedule 40 like they said and would not fit tightly to the pipe? Chinese made

Any concern with mosquito's in the rain barrel?
Dude you need to apple cider to that water the apple cider will protect the water the not became green or not grow allergies.
Great tip! We used vinegar and even livestock tablets. Just could not keep up with the ducks 🦆
I hate th ecups..they muck up so quickly with algea. I saw a new blue large tray so duck can use it too. May try something like that.
Set your rain barrel near the metal roof of the house to catch your rain.
Just what I needed. Thank you. Subbed and bell rang
My girls flip the cups over, anyway to prevent this?
3:53 what's that black tub? Also where do you live, love the background. Thanks for all the cool vids

Awesome! thanks for the reply. God bless
why not put barrel under other roof to catch rain water ??
Muito legal sua idéia, parabéns !!!
My chickens pull the red cup off and the yellow piece all the time
Great video, but you should have filmed the chickens drinking the water!
I know right?! I tried for a bit but never caught them drinking from it 🤔so i just posted it as is.
What do you about the water turning green thanks donnie
Hey Donnie, if you keep a lid on it so the suns not directly on it and add a splash of vinegar every few weeks it shouldn’t grow any algae 👍🏻
I’d bet those cups leak I haven’t found any yet that don’t
Dude, plumber here, glue it
nice
😂😂😂 hilarious and informative
Add a toilet float valve to your barrel and you really don’t have to water them.
哈哈哈哈,聪明。
The problem is not every hen figure it out
Unfortunately my husband can’t do that
No winter where you live, eh?
Wer I can buy chicken waterer cup
Kenet Saclag Amazon
Won’t mosquitos lay eggs in that
Yea I had to add apple cider vinegar to it.
The cups don't work for my chickens 😅 they are stupid
