After hearing about all the possible problems after cataract surgery, dry eye, droopy eye lid, floaters. I’m seriously thinking about putting off my cataract surgery. I already have floaters which are extremely annoying and already have a droopy left eyelid
That was helpful, I developed a problem from the surgery and was really glad I told A and E about my dry eyes so they instantly prescribed a product that was good for post surgery. all this cataract stuff was/is a much bigger deal than I understood prior to surgery
Very useful & important. I'm having cataract surgery & needed to hear this. Thank you.
Your videos are wonderful. So helpful in eyecare. I learn something new each time. I had several eye procedures last year: cataract, glaucoma. and dissolvsble plugs. None of the many eye professionals i have seen for help with my recovery symptoms, have given
me any help. Your videos have given me so much good information, that i have been able to self treat and my symptoms have improved about 90%. I wish you were local. Thank you again. You do so much good
I also regret having had cataract eye surgery. I believe that I already had dry eye syndrome prior to the surgery. I’ve tried countless drops and they’ve all made it worse (Genteal Tears, Ivizia, blink, Systane, etc., etc.).
Try using organic hexane free cold pressed castor oil.
I just had surgery last month and having vision issues and dry eyes.
Applying 1 drip into the eye 2-3 times a day for now.
Praying it will help scarring and dry eyes.
Thanks for the video😊
I'll take the MUCH better vision over dry eye any day! The cataract surgery has me seeing like a kid again; and I am in my mid 70s!
I had to have cataract surgery just to be able to drive safely. It did that, though I don't have 20/20 vision, and don't know why, since I paid for toric lenses. As for my dry eyes, it didn't seem to affect them adversely.
@@commonsense6967 You should really talk to your surgeon, and if needed, seek a second opinion. There are no guarantees, with any surgery..especially cataract surgery. Everyone experiences different results, and results can differ from eye to eye, in the same person.
Currently, my left eye (1st to be operated on 2 weeks ago), sees better than the right eye that used to be dominant (operated on a week ago). The surgeon said it's a common occurrence and both eyes fight for dominance.
Great. I don't have cataracts yet but I have super dry eyes. Gets worse every year. I just get blown off, even by the eye specialist I was sent to. He kept telling me to use those awful artificial tears and I kept telling him those make it worse. Supposedly it's due to age, allergies, and blocked ducts. I also have a hard cyst on my eye that makes it even worse with more developing. Getting old sucks.
This is excellent and imo should be a part of every pre surgery education!! I love my improved vision, but this video would have prevented a number of phone calls and provider visits regarding dry eye, scratchy eye, and inconsistent blurred vision concerns I have. PS Optase is good stuff!
I love the conversation about why it’s so important to control the dry eyes before cataract surgery. The tear layer is the first lens that focuses light into the eye so it makes complete sense that a healthy tear layer will produce the most accurate corneal measurements and contribute to the best visual outcome post surgery. Great job Dr Guymon and Dr Lee for this very informative video! 👏🏼 👏🏼 👏🏼
Thanks Dr. Smith!
Thanks to both doctors for this video! (I already follow both of you, so it was great to watch you both in the same video.) Wish I had seen it before my surgery, but it gives me a better understanding of some problems I've had since.
Thank you for watching and following us! I hope we can keep helping in the future.
Thank you.
This was such a good time! Looking forward to our next collaboration ❤
Thanks so much, Dr. Lee!
Thank you so much for taking your time out to make this video. I think we can do a lot of help when we team up!
Wow awesome video. You guys rock. I wish I knew some of this information before my surgery.
Me, too!
Just had cataracts done… not any problems…have my other eye next… but eye is dry..will ask my doctor
I’m one of those who regrets having cataract surgery. My vision was much better before the surgery than it is now. I’ve seen numerous ophthalmologists in two states that tell me the same thing….use eye drops! I use them several times a day, but still have dry eyes, blurry vision, etc. While cataract surgery can and does help many people, it shouldn’t be considered routine and “ no big deal” as I was lead to believe!
My understanding is that you will go blind eventually if the cataracts aren’t removed.
@@mrm3858 True, but I had my surgery when they first appeared. Bad decision on my part. I also got the multifocal lenses ($5k out of pocket) so I wouldn’t have to wear glasses. Bluntly, my surgeon lied to me. The surgery is a big deal, and should be done only when necessary. And, for me, the multifocal lenses are awful. My vision is worse now.
@@kathyandthedogs626 mine aren’t severe, but very troublesome. I have headaches and limited night vision and ability to focus for long periods. I’m sorry about your experience. I hope you can be helped. I have to trust my doc. and your story is the first I heard that was negative. Im not comfortable doing it, but the alternative is bad.
There is absolutely a time when the surgery is necessary and beneficial. I hope it will help you. It seems to help most people. I blame my surgeon, but it’s really my fault for not doing my due diligence.
Thanks for your selfish negativity
I'm surprised more cataract surgeons and ophthalmologists don't stress taking care of dry eyes before surgery. It seems so important for getting the right lenses. Thanks again to you and Dr. Lee for another important, informative video!
I think a lot of doctors are focusing more and more on dry eye issues. But... more always needs to be done for sure.
How do I know I have dry eyes
@@louisechallenger2907one way you can tell is if you’re blinking a lot. If you’re eyes want to blink once every 2-3 seconds you probably have evaporative dry eye. Other ways to tell would be eyes that burn when driving with the heater or AC on. There are many other signs of dry eyes. Your Eye Doctor will have very specific and special ways to find out what type of dry eyes you have or if it’s something else completely that is causing eye irritation.
Unfortunately, symptoms from dry eye can range wildly... not just having your eyes dry. A lot of times the eye doctor can diagnose you with dry eye.
Doctors are focused on surgery & profit. They want to make sure they have a steady stream of revenue. If everything goes well & you don't need constant followup appointments?? How Dr's. make a living.
How does anyone think you give patients eye drops full of chemicals & preservatives things that weren't created to go in your body (eye). Does anyone really think that you are going to have a happy healthy life.
No one identifies what is causing so many catracts. This is genetic. Look around the waiting room. How many have the same gene pool multiple this by millions of people worldwide.
I suffered from dry eye symptoms prior to my cataract surgery. I had plugs put into the drainage holes of both eyes on lower eyelids. I still suffer from dry eye after cataract surgery even more than before. Although my vision improved slightly after surgery, I had a film that hindered my vision beginning roughly 6 months after surgery. I found out last week (nearly 5 years after surgery) that I now have PCO which should be a quick fix to clear up my vision with YAG laser. Not sure I would have had cataract surgery if I had known all of this beforehand. Thanks for the videos you do. Lots of good info.
Great video! Thank you! Many prescription drugs can cause dry eye. Of course, the chance of needing Rxs as people age increases and those are the people who eventually need cataract surgery. I was just surprised that was not mentioned. I am not encouraging anyone to stop taking their meds, but they should consult with the prescribing doctor if they think a RX might be the cause of their dry
I had cataract surgery on my right eye six weeks ago and on my left eye four weeks ago. My vision is very good, much improved. Had no issues with the right eye, felt normal after about three weeks. But the left eye, not so much. It’s what I would call severe dry eye. I am managing it with frequent use of preservative free artificial tears. I had mild dry eye before the surgery, which was easily managed with twice daily artificial tears. I find it strange that only the left eye is having this problem post surgery. Hopefully, with time, it will improve.
My experience has been OTC Alergy medications, especially watering eyes. Once I stopped taking it, my eyes started producing tears after a few says. When I stopped and thought about it, it made sense.
I tried bilberry supplement and it helps a lot
I ended up with a severely dry eye after PRK 10-12 years ago that slowly improved but took years. Now I have a cataract in that same eye that qualifies for removal but I am concerned about a repeat of dry eye. I still use Genteal Severe dry eye gel twice every night in that eye although I rarely wake up any more with my eye lid stuck to my eyeball, which by the way is excruciatingly painful when you inadvertently rip open that eye upon waking.
My left eye have been cry for the last one and half years what is the treatment plz plz
Love your videos! If TBUT has returned to normal after IPL, do I need to continue using artificial tears even when there are no symptoms? Or will the artificial tears destabilize the tear film? Any information would be greatly appreciated!
I would check in with your doctor with that question. Might be different with everybody. I usually try and get people to the point of not being dependent on eye drops... but it may be crucial for some patients to keep doing them.
Thank you for your reply! Will do! @@DrEyeGuy
I have had dry eyes since my mid-twenties. I am 62 years old now. I've seen eye doctors on and off for this condition. Once they determine I don't have Sjogren's, preservative free eye drops are recommended. Never have any root causes as this doctor mentioned been investigated or suggested for me. This concerns me bc I do have the early stages of cataracts. I do find the eye heat packs helpful in symptomatic relief.
Thank you for sharing! Dry Eye can be a mystery for some people. Hopefully everything can be under control for you!
I had an operation for cataracts and I ended up with shingles with in my eye. It took time for it to get better
I am very near sighted and have astigmatism and nystagmus from Cebral Palsy will that affect me having cataract surgery
Very good information. What could be addressed in another video, perhaps is a situation my father had: Glaucoma occurs after cataract surgery due to the Steroid eye drops given for him to reduce possible inflammation from said surgery. Can a patient request something other than steroids for anti-inflammatory use? Steroids are really getting to be something most of us do not want in our bodies, even temporarily. Women can be especially harmed by steroid usage - I've known women who take, for example One cortisone injection for severe Spring time allergies and the massive almost overnight weight gain that occurs and resultant metabolic syndrome (permanent) is frightening. We need to get physicians away from the steroids!
How can I share the image of my left eye plz help help
My glands are so much worse after surgery 2 years ago...😢 Im 56 and nearly bling
Can cataract surgery on one eye during perimenopausal years, increase the problem of dry eyes post surgery, and leading to chemosis in both eyes?
Dry eye and red line going thru color of my blue eye. Surgery was 4-25-24. Next eye on 5-9-24.
I feel like I’m having sand on my eye after cataract surgery, is it normal and if it’s normal then for how I will feel that because it really bothers me a lot
I just want to know your location, so that i can come for the treatment
dear doctor, thankyou for your videos . Verygood as always. my questin is when she says the treatment for dry eyes , can be used a spectrum of red light, could be something similar to a lamp that is used in kinesio for heating articulations in case of inflamatories sintoms? or is another thing can you explain in other video that treamtent= ? im severe dry eyes, i live in argnetina they dont give more than eye drops... like carbixu¡imetilcelulose...
thsnk you very much hope you can undrestand becaus emy english is terrible
thank you
Great question! IPL, intense pulsed light, can use light to treat ocular rosacea, which is a great in office procedure. At home devices may not have enough energy to be effective. Red light therapy is another category that could help.... Im currently researching and testing this out.
thank yyou!!

I’m having problems with inflammation. Regret having the surgery!
Oh no! I'm sorry to hear this. Was the surgery recent?
Only one of my eyes is really having issues 😢
I never suffered with dry eyes and had 20/20 vision before cataract surgery on my right eye!...a top consultant who should have performed the op (and who profusely apologized for not doing so) allowed a Junior senior to perform the op the man damaged the optic nerve and has caused untold stress to myself and that now I have to live with this problem and am constantly using drops for dry eye.. any comments please ...My family are very angry what has been done to myself!!!!
So sorry to hear this! Are you being followed and managed by an eye doctor currently?
So sorry. Praying for your recovery. 🙏
Can I use cod liver oil after implants? I now have dry and preaaure.
I currently am experiencing severe dry eyes. I struggle to open my eyes in the mornings. Please help I am in Tembisa South Africa. Can I consult if you have consulting rooms in South Africa. I also have these uncomfortable feelings on the eyes during and after watching television. Please help
Sorry to hear that! I'm not set up to do online consults unfortunately. 😔 I'll keep trying to do my best to educate as much as I can.
Try organic castor oil around and I put 1 drip in my eyes two times a day.
It has to be organic, hexane free and cold pressed in a glass bottle.
My mom left eye is blinded due to cataract and she has been asked not to do eye surgery because there is high pressure in the eye. I don't know what to do and she complain of pain
Can be treated maybe for ocular pressure then getting the cataract out
Why cant they prescribe Preservative free eye drops
They can, and often times do.
Hi told you may problem how can you help
I would recommend just setting up an appointment with a local eye care provider in your area. Sounds like your symptoms are fairly bothersome.
I did cataract surgery 2 years ago .why I feel one day clear . The next day it is all very berry . ????
Have you talked to your eye doctor about this?
Yes and more blurry vision
Well this is not creating a calm feeling.
