- When it comes to a great lawn, there's a few key steps to focus on to fix your yard and achieve the lawn you've always wanted.
The key steps I'm working on today are core aeration and dethatching. These steps are not only great for your lawn in general, but they are especially key before Overseeding.

The Ultimate Guide To Cool Season Lawns - www.ryanknorrlawncare.com/the-ultimate-guide-to-cool-season-lawns/
Im just watching the video and noticing how much better your lawn looks than those surrounding you
I’ve concluded that I don’t have anywhere near enough lawn equipment.
Yup
Lol 😁
You can rent this stuff for relatively cheap at home depot. The dethatching is a little overkill, core aeration and seeding in the fall is more then enough to make your lawn amazing
Lmaooooo
@@1cooper526 I just like running my little electric dethatcher. Haha, pulls up some good stuff.
The more I watch your videos the more I think having a swardman with all the attachments is such a great deal. Being able to dethatch, use the brush to sweep sand into the grass, and mow with one device sounds amazing. The lawn is looking amazing. Can’t wait to see what the next step is.
Finished doing mine this weekend as well. I tried it last fall after watching your videos. The results are amazing. Definitely doing it every spring and fall now.
tbh, I never cared much about how good my grass looks but seeing these videos and some of my neighbors lawns made me reconsider my thoughts. lol Now, I don't think I can ever commit this much time or effort but following much of the things you do is really helping making a difference. Love your videos and thanks for helping us out.
So cool to watch the process we will be doing soon for the first time (dethatching and aerating)!! Very nice of your neighbor to help you! I am sure he is happy to have you close by to give him advice about his lawn, too! Happy Labor Day, everyone!
That's what I like to see! Neighbors helping neighbors 👍. Thankfully I have neighbor like that too. I help her and she helps me. Can't wait to see the next one!
I just finished doing all of this to my lawn yesterday. I was whipped at the end of the day but I'm looking forward to seeing the results! I wish I had a neighbor to help me out.
I just aerated 6 lawns today. I've never wrestled a giant before but this is probably how I'd feel if I did.
@@jeffadams3277 true story
@the lawn guardian. Did you use the same aerator Ryan used in this video , the Billy goat??
@@randyman8984 no. I used the more common core aerator where the tines roll over the lawn.
@@TheLawnGuardian Me too but this one in video looks so much easier on the body.I have hills like you so I wonder how it would do?
Gotta love that you have your neighbor getting into the lawn care! Helpers are the best and it looks like you used a fair amount of equipment. Can’t wait to see the end result
That neighbor needs to mind his own lawn though. 😝
Seeing you use an aerator answers my question as to when is a good time to aerate. I like how the reciprocating machine works. Great post.
This is what it’s all about while you got the equipment out he helps you with your lawn and you help him with his lawn and the whole neighborhood looks wonderful. Reminds me of my neighbors.
I've been following you since January of this year and can say my lawn is looking better than ever. My neighbor and I have an unspoken competition between the two of us. It's fun to see who's turns out better. This summer my neighbor did well, but mine did better. I do however have a few patches of clover I need to handle, but other than that, we're doing well! Thank you, Ryan! Much love from the East Coast.
Ryan's sand leveling finally is my bet.
I know I'm many notches below the cool kids, but I'm old and fat. I got one of the tow behind aerators that you put weights in. Works well enough and have it on hand and ready to go every year.
Always love detatching videos, just done mine but as I’ve only started my lawn care the grass is now brown but can’t wait to hopefully see it bounce back :-)
Very nice! I noticed the Harbor Freight ramps right off. I bought some a few years ago and it has really saved my back. Man, I will have to say you are NOT afraid of hard work. That would have been several days of work for me so I am sure you appreciated your neighbors help. At any rate, I hope you achieve great results. I hope after all of the hard work Mother Nature cooperates with her tears of goodness through the fall planting season. Keep up the GREAT videos, they are very helpful.
Just did all that plus overseeding and peat moss. Water water water. Can wait to results. Love the video Ryan 👍👊🤣
Love it !!! You and you neighbor were in perfect symphony and the most efficient I’ve seen. Can’t wait for the “next episode” like Dr Dre and Eminem 😂
Love the cliffhanger ending to the surprise. 🤙
Aeration is next weekend for me and overseeding. Planning to let cores dry out and mulch up with old mower. Trying to rake them all is a PIA and very labor intensive. I’ve lived and learned
I'm going to let them dry and then run over them with an overseeder. Then reseed.
Ryan, through out the years you always rented the bulku aerator and the body aches that came with it, this new machine you rented looks much easier to handle and use.
FINALLY! Glad to see you leveling your back lawn.👍
Far NW burbs of Chicago here..Aerated yesterday and raked up the plugs as well. Will dethatch once this rain passes and overseed. Great video. Too funny, I just now saw this. Best of luck to all!!
Billy goat makes some really good machines, I’ve used both the one you have here and the “roller aerators” with the big drum and you’re right about the other ones being more difficult. Aeration and overseeding is my favorite time of year. Curious to see if you’re going to back drag the own afterwards (writing this before finishing the video) nice vid
Hey Ryan, just wanted to say thanks for all the info you put out. Working on my first lawn renovation and your channel has been a godsend. Also just wanted to say that your videography game does not go unnoticed. Excellent shots and editing. The end shot with the truck was very well done. And the trip out west short film was great! Keep it up!
Thanks!
It’s nice to see neighbors getting along
I look at your lawn and I'm thankful for my small lawn.
My & my dad love these videos. Goodness me. Thank you!
Finally did my back yard this last weekend. Rented the peat moss spreader and the lawn roller. My husband didn't believe me when I told him how heavy the lawn roller was filled with water. OMG! now stands for OH MY GLUTES! lol My back yard is flat. I may or may not need the lawn roller but wanted to give it a whirl. What a workout! But the peat moss spreader WAS AMAZING! Funny how no one else around me got excited as I did when it just rolled out the perfect layer. Seriously the best thing since sliced bread.
Sounds like you had a lot of fun
So much easier to take the cores off the lawn when it’s flat as a billiard table and cut low. So nice!
Seeing that truck dump soil and sand is always a love hate relationship. First few hours its all love and after about 4+ it slowly turns to hate :)
I took the 1" diameter cores from the front yard, then drilled 1" holes in the back yard and re-planted them. Worked out really nice
@ NJ Phil you’re awesome
Wow that's a lot of work, how many square feet do you have and how long did it take?
what were you achieving by doing this ? I have been wondering what uses the cores could be I see some say to leave on lawn to disintegrate others remove and discard curious 🤔
On these plugr style you can adjust the threaded tine and set screw to allow a deeper core
Thanks for showing me that I’m definitely too old to do this myself like I thought I would! 😂
Cliffhangers, what a teaser!!! Lawn looks great. So fun that your neighbor has caught the lawn care big too!
I saw that truck and was excited. Then “to be continued “! Ok post the next one please. Thanks Ryan.
Finally jumping on the sand leveling ! 👍🏽
That reciprocating aerator sure looks like it a whole lot easier to use. 👍🏻
I just used my tow behind dethatcher two days ago to get ready for aerating this coming weekend and am in the process of hand raking the dead grass off of 10k sq ft with one of those plastic rakes because my rider doesn't have a bagger. I've got about half done after taking yesterday off to recuperate. I'm too old for this. Nice that you have help!! Looks fantastic!
Do you have a blower? Use that to blow it into a smaller area so you don't have to rake the entire yard.
@@DarkFidelity tried that. Wine direction kept changing and pissing me off lol
At that point I would probably purchase a 24 inch mower with a bagger!
Dude!! That thing is amazing! Awesome to see that in action. Now I've got to find me one.
Annual lawn leveling: a tradition bigger than Festivus
JonD it’s a feat of strength! When do we get to air our grievances??
I will bring the pole
Chris Cook ..I find tinsel distracting
Festivus for the rest of us
There's nothing bigger than Festivus
Another great and informative video! Awesome editing also!👍
Love the cliff hanger ending!
i live south and east of you, you've got plenty of rain coming!! Love your videos!!
There had better be sand in that dump truck, Ryan. This ain't no "how to" video. This is the real deal, folks!
Will be sand, finally :)
Sand is good unless you have a high clay soil. Sand and clay make concrete or bricks. Was going to put sand in my yard until I spoke with county extension service. They recommended composted peat.
@@jdunker6301 That's a common myth. I'm surprised your county extension office gave you that information.
I was a lookie-loo over the weekend at Ryan's House....... WE HAVE SAND!!!!!
^^^^ look everyone a lookie Lou, and lookie Lou!!!
Awesome job! Keep up the great work on the videos
i read somewhere that aeration may be better in spring for sandier soils (what I have). What are your thoughts? Also, thanks for all the great tips in these videos. This is my first year really getting into lawn care and this old timer across the street with the best lawn on the block said my lawn is looking great... couldn't believe it haha
Your lawn is amazing!
I would not want to use that swardman unless I had the money to buy one when I was done. Looks like the dream dethatch/ reel mower
Looks great Ryan, you going to have competition soon Will is learning from you 😛. Great to have a great neighbour like him 👍
His yard is looking great
What a cliff hanger Ryan!!! Lawn is looking great.
Just started watching but the yard already looks good.
That aerator looks amazing. Your neighbor is even more amazing👍. I have great neighbor too. 😊
Hi Ryan... Love the videos and the way you share the knowledge.
I'm struggling with an issue. I did a full overseeding project last weekend with aerate, cut, soil with triple mix, overseed with the types of perennial rye and then starter fertilizer and humic acid treatment. That whole process went well but here's the issue.
This week was cooler than expected here in Toronto. No rain. I watered at least twice a day and tried to keep the seeds moist. Unfortunately I haven't had really any growth yet and first is day seven. I'm keeping up the watering but the lawn seems to have slowed down a lot and I am starting to see it browning. I'm worried I'm getting fungus from the over watering but I can't stop because of the seeding.
What do I do?
I have never seen that type of aerator that is pretty cool!
Ryan thanks for the info, wanted to know if I should Aerate first and then de-thatch / scarify.
What a cliffhanger! Looks like a lot of work. I know you are helping him out too, but looks like you have a great neighbor!
I wish I loved anything as much as ryan loves his turf
Thanks for sharing. I need an Electra in my life lol.
Great video! Thanks for the advice.
How do you pick up the cores that go out while aerating?
Great advice Ryan - thank you! Curious... The scene at the end - do you typically apply a new level of topsoil BEFORE or AFTER you aerate & overseed? Wouldn't that smother the new grass seed?
We always A/O with Turf Type Tall Fescue at TG but I remember we had those walk behinds and the old fashioned ride on them things would be bouncing literally every where then they bought this brand new Z Aerate 40" ride on with the medieval spikes in front and u could control the depths of the plugs and everything it was literally beautiful and no one wanted to ride it guess they were scared so I got stuck doing it, but I liked it honestly... I could get 3-6 maybe 7" cores not that u would want 7 but a 5" plug is good and since it had hooper on top i would just do a perimeter pass then while doing second pass id seed what I just pulled to my left. or right sometimes but yeah that Machine was incredible honestly absolutely loved it... But you could really tear up a lawn if u even jerk left or right with the spikes in ground ur pooped
Those cores will go great in the compost bin!
I know what happens, especially after hearing what happened tonight, I can’t wait to see the progress.
Love those plugr machines
Car drives by: Wow, there must of been a dog party in that guys yard for Labor Day!
When my dad would have his yard aerated, we always called it poodle turds!
I show your videos to my wife so I can buy more and more lawn equipment lol thanks brother
hmmmm I'm getting my aerator on Thursday gonna be a great weekend!
thanks for the vids, i call this my class. thanks teach for the info
Awesome stuff man thank you! Question would you recommend thatching before Aerating or viceversa and then over seeding and Fertilize? And did you pick up the plugs because you were thatching? Thanks again 👍🏼
HomesliceDrummer thanks 👍🏼
That’s awesome! Do you think I’d be able to use the sunjoe to pick up cores?
Great vid Ryan
I don’t like the messing around picking up and renting, so I found this GREEN SCOTT 🇨🇦lawnmower aerator it’s awesome and simple mount to mower and your off to the races I rave about the genius idea of the product! He makes all his own tines for sale as well they are professional grade I’d say!
🤣😂😆you have the deepest greenest turf on the block by far I can tell. Your neighbors must be so jealous 😆
Dethatched/ scarified my lawn today, 20,000 sq ft. Took a loooong time
Nice job on the lawn l like that aerator. I have the ones that will give u a work out . soon it will be my money maker. Good video thanks
I'll be anxiously awaiting the next part of this project! Ryan, if your lawn could only be better than one other person's lawn, who would you choose? And why Connor Ward? 🤣😂🤣😂 Also, careful with that aerator, don't be driving that thing around all Willy Nilly!
Always great content
How is Wills lawn doing ?
Did you aerate his lawn too?
Love dis vid!!!! This video really helped!!!!
The MacGyver of lawn care 👊🏼
Hey Ryan! I dethatched and aerated this past April. Do I have to aerate again? I’ve just finished dethatching yesterday.
I have had a nice green lawn all summer with adjusting the height of the mower as the heat cranked up. The last 2 times I mowed I took it down another notch on the Toro Super Recycler. I have a lot of dead in the lawn from the summer growth. Similar to what you have going on in your backyard. Mine lawn is all elite bluegrass. Do you recommend that I dethatch and then do my last fert of the season or should I just wait until spring to do the dethatch?
Ryan...looks to me like a sand delivery. I am having lots of trouble finding suitable sand to level. Maybe you can discuss in the video where/what to get. Having some trouble finding some sand. I have watched your previous video on the topic too.
If you have a lot of rocks just under grass that kind of unit will destroy it self and you Ryan ‘s drum unit better choice for poor sub grade . Great video , I have never seen core’s removed amazing machine
two thumbs up. I'm always learning something new. Btw, your lawn looks like an astro turf.
Should you do aeration in the spring if it wasn't done in the fall or just wait till next fall? Clay soil with a combination of TTTF and KGB. If so would you do the aeration before applying a pre-emergent?
Just a few questions.
Can you aerate in November in New England?
My lawn looks stressed right now, but it’s fall. I don’t know why it looks so bad
Should I just aerate and seed in spring?
How long after pre emergent should I wait to seed?
Great video man. I think I know what’s coming. Haha! Let’s get it!
Loved the video Ryan. Quick question though; why didn't you have your neighbor follow you around with the Swardman to prevent clumping of the plugs? I love to see neighbors helping neighbors!
I just bought my first house! And own my first lawn!
First mow with my brand new mower and i scalped the hell out of it. Dug up chunks of dirt in several areas too, some areas are so uneven crater like pits, also left huge lines/clumps of clippings down every row, and i wasnt able to tidy up the edges becsuse I don't own a weed whacker yet.
I think you would have had a heart attack if you seen what ive done. Lol, i have plenty to learn yet.
Stick around and you'll get there in no time
I am going to level out some uneven spots in my backyard after aeration but before putting seed down. Is it best then to remove the plugs from these areas? And if so, what’s the easiest way to remove them: bagging them with a mower or raking them up?
So I'm in the process of doing this in October. Do you think the more passes with the Aerator are more beneficial? The summer has destroyed my lawn. I cut my grass maybe 2 times from July until yesterday. It's burnt to death. I definitely need to dethatch it too. Would you recommend multiple dethatching passes too?
Yep I do multiple on both processes.
Ryan in need of your help. I did all this and laid Peat Moss down but even mowing at 2in made it to where I have so much fluff it’s drowning out the grass of light. I only put down .5in and raked off the high spots but still seems like much. We have 7” of snow coming tonight :/ should I be concerned? Thanks for the help!
Thank you for sharing.
Ryan, is it a good idea to apply a winter fertilizer, like a month or two, after overseeding?
Wow! Tons of thatch in the back yard. Is the plugger self propelled? Another great video, as always!
Lots of damage back there this year
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care you rake up the plugs? Always thought that the rule was to leave them, no? Thx
Ryan - i have been inspired by your videos and am about to do a major top soil addition and TTF seeding in my back yard. I have some big oak and hickory trees back there. I bought the TTF that seed superstore recommended and have my irrigation and fertilizer plan figured out. I am going to put up a temporary fence to keep the dogs off becaue I know that new grass is sensitive to foot traffic, but wondering if I should blow off the leaves and pick up tree droppings as the grass is trying to grow, or should I just not worry about it?
Keeping the leaves off as much as possible will be good
Hi Ryan. First off, thanks SO much for the great content. Everything is always so greatly explained without a bunch of filler material. I have a question please. I live in northwest Illinois and I want to do some aerating and overseeding this fall. When would you do that? I was thinking about this weekend, but is that too early? I appreciate your feedback sir. Thanks!!
Now. Seed needs as many weeks as possible to get going before frost
Ryan Knorr Lawn Care Thanks so much for the quick response! I appreciate it!
Hey Ryan where did you get those ramps you used to get the aerator in/out of your truck?
