Hello again - can you tell me what keyboard to get - I’ve purchased two now - first one didn’t have trackpad so I could not go to a line to select and copy text. Second one has a dongle Ian to plug in so that takes care of the flash drive space ...
Thank you for this info, it worked out great today. I was getting so tired of running out of storage on my Firestick 4k. Added a 128 GB flash drive, created two partitions, and moved my apps per your instructions. Only difference is I connected to the Firestick and ran the ADB commands from my PC. Saved a lot of time by typing on a full sized keyboard rather than trying to do it with the remote ;)

THANKS! Please advise: I use a VPN always ON with my FS 4K, doesn't this produce a IP Address that is really NOT my IP Address, and even that can change too! I believe that the IP A. that will come up right now is in Seattle, thus hiding the IP of Server here in Portland. Do I just ignore this???? Also, would it work just as well, in order to create more space in present storage, instead of doing it the way you are doing it, just Uninstall the APP and reinstall it and since you show us every APP dnld after setting this USB Drive up will be installed onto it.....WALA, you'd have it there, might just have to do some tweaks to it and use. A VPN will mask your actual IP address through a separate server network making you appear to be somewhere you are not, which makes it more difficult to get your actual location. When I use my VPN, I tend to choose cities well outside my actual one and sometimes in a different city and state but in the same time zone. So yes, just ignore whatever IP address your VPN assigns you. I think I saw in a tutorial similar to this where the person said to not move VPN apps to USB. Something about it may not work correctly unless it's run internally or it may run slower or something. Those apps don't take up much space anyway, so I would just leave them internally -- as long as you installed one before applying the USB tweak.
Yes thank you so much! It's been driving me crazy that I couldn't get this to work, and what's strange is the fact that it was working before lol. Well I think I got it figured out now....thanks to you sir. I will be subscribing after this . Thanks again TDUk
Great video ! This is a huge benefit for fire devices, given their absolutely stingy internal storage size. Very well done ! Thank you, & cheer's,... 👍👍👍
The 50:50 partitioning using the ABD Shell for moving apps to the first partition is well covered. Looking for a video or instructions on how to use the second partition to transfer and play data (personal videos) to the second partition. Have the latest FireStick 4K. Thx
Wow you actually got it to work !You the man! I'm sure you helped many Amazon Fire Stick users. I unfortunately returned my AFS because of this and after installing cody very low system memory so for me NvidiaSheild. Can you plug into a 1TB drive? & you must still be able to use Amazon Ethernet Adapter? Great info TDUK
this is amazing! thank you for this info. I ran out of space on one of my firesticks and this works well. only issue I have is that new apps do not install on USB. I have to move them every time which is a bit of a pain. It only installs on USB if it is sideloaded.
Would there be any difference in using a 2 or 3 terabyte solid state drive rather than a thumb drive? Then, in conjunction with Channels DVR app it could be a way to have a setup very similar to a cable companies DVR service. Is that possible?
Wonderfully informative video. One question....how do you do the copy/paste thing? I know how to do it on my computer but how do you do it on the stick?
Is this possible? Setup a Cloner Alliance ultra with a FIRESTICK with additional memory via OTG cable? If so what type of OTG cable will I need? As always your help is much appreciated.
Does the 2nd generation fire stick have more memory then the 4K firestick which one do you recommend if not using 4K at the moment wanting to buy another firestick I'm sure the newest is the best but just wondering what you think about it
Excellent video as always, works tremendously well. Not sure if you're aware but anyting downloaded from Amazon doesn't go on the USB. Just one question though, how do I check the space used an the space left on the USB?
Just get an OTG cable, and a USB 3.0 or 3.1 drive (formatted to FAT32). Plug the OTG cable into the Fire Stick 4k or Fire TV Cube 4k, then plug the USB drive into the OTG cable and it will show a notification on screen that it detects the USB drive. If you look in Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage, you will see your USB drive showing up as new additional available storage. Any new apps you install that have been marked by the developer as being available to be installed on external locations will be installed to the USB drive and not on the limited internal storage that comes with the Fire Stick going forward. From there, you can simply uninstall any apps that have been installed on your internal storage that are eating up additional space you'd like to free up, and when reinstalled they will be installed on the external storage you've added (if the developer has marked them as able to be located in an external drive). You can get additional instructions on how to manually move existing applications that are on your internal storage to the external USB drive by watching these videos on setting up additional storage. Be aware that some apps that you use require a lot of processing power and are better left on the internal storage location to allow them to maintain optimum performance. If you move an app to the external storage and find it doesn't perform well once there can simply be moved back to the internal storage, but most will run just fine with no noticeable degradation of performance from the external location. This is the OTG cable I use, which allows you to add up to 3 USB devices (Wireless keyboard & mouse & USB drive, etc) amzn.to/38XEKnP I also use a Samsung FIT Plus USB 3.1 Flash Drive 128GB which works well. amzn.to/2Zvd1HH I got the 128GB because it has faster performance, which is always better, but the 64GB version should work just as well, for about half the price.
I've been waiting for this forever now!!! You should include the tutorial for reversing this, too, though. It could screw a lot of people up. I mean, what happens when you remove the USB drive, and it can no longer find these apps?
Thanks man! I just watched the new video, and you explained just about everything I wanted to know. I can't wait to do this!! (As soon as I get paid, and order a new SD card for my USB adaptor.) This is golden!!! This is what we've all been waiting for!!! I sent Amazon a link, and told them they really need to implement this in the Fire TV OS. It wouldn't be that hard to make this an end user feature. I think we were all running really low on space, right?!!
Thx bought 32g.off amazon. Canada... 15bux cdn. Hope it works! It doesn't lag firestick wen u use adoptive storage? On my Nvidia shield it seems to lag.. I'm using 128gb ssd drive
Mine is the 3rd gen, a little square with the dongle and it’s code name is needle not mantis like your video. Does not recognizing the same USB from your video. Simply does it not work because I have an older generation stick OS 6.2.6.8?
I did something similar while adding emulators to play retro games. Didn't have to use the debug app. It was just plug and play...although, i haven't tried running or transferring apps to it as I'm using it mainly for storage. i can confirm it will recognize a usb drive without having to tweak any settings. The one i used was a generic 32gb drive.
Hi great video but if I download anything in an application it saves to my fire stick storage which wipes it out, any idea what I’ve done wrong ? Cheers
I found the otg u use doesn't cause the constant reboot, it's the micro power cable when using a otg. It has to be power only not power/data. I bought 2 otg thinking the first wasn't compatible, then the 2nd did it too but then I switch from the extra long cable (power/data) I had because the first otg I bought was a small angle one so the flash drive wouldn't smack up against my tv when I swivel it but the cable that came with it was too short because of my tall stand. The 2nd was the cable split style u used and I just stuck a cable clip to the back of my tv so it wouldn't bang around. After that still rebooted constantly but with that extra length I tried the standard power cable that came with it and no more rebooting. I think it causes data interruption when the power cable has data capabilities too (trying to read/send data to a destination with nothing there but power output). Hope this helps anyone that had the same problem I did.
I was wondering if the otg cable reduced the power to my 4k firestick because my screen turned green and the apps were barely visible. Returned the 4k firestick to Amazon then bought one at staples and it did the same thing so returned it. Since then I have been doing research and thought the issue was the otg cable rather than the 4k firestick. So I ordered another 4k firestick today and I'm hesitant to use the otg cable. What is your thoughts on this. Thanks in advance
Even though Amazon recommends that not to use a storage capacity bigger than 128GB and no external HDD, there has been videos of people using a 2TB external HDD and it works (they are saying that that’s the biggest size it will work with and the fire tv device has to have fire is 7 or later for it to work). UPDATE: there’s a video from Chris Waite from March talking about this.
Just want to mention, I was struggling with this, I could not get the app to copy over with the pm move-package command, but it worked after I used sm to format the volume.
Dude, I've tried a dozen USB sticks and none have worked..are we supposed to format that drive inside ADB shell as well? You did this by the sounds of it.
@@TechDoctorUK Odd enough it only gives me the option of transferring native Apps to the SD card. It's a restriction. They must of not wanted people to use it for external storage. Reference model number B00U3FPN4U
First, I want to say how much I appreciate everything you do for the streaming community. I have a question if you would be so kind. Am I to assume, it's not possible to move Prime Video or Amazon Music to attached internal USB storage through ADB Shell? I got failure response. assuming they use more than 1 package for the programs to operate on purpose.
Brilliant vid; thanks. When you were working within ADB Shell, you were using a copy/paste technique to avoid retyping that long USB Partion ID. Can you please share that copy.paste trick. It definitely would come in handy when having to move those stubborn apps to the USB. Much appreciated
I was moving right along beautifully until I needed to scroll up and down through the package list, only find I couldn't with just my FS, which is why I asked days ago if a keyboard was needed. Would have been nice to know that at the onset so I could have ordered one and have been prepared for this endeavor. Perhaps you might want to include that bit of info in the future when such is relative to know.
you can do it with the firestick remote. you just keep clicking up or down until you see it move.. it takes a minute to work through the apps / space .. but it works
Good video, very informative, thank you. I have a hard time getting the FireTV stick to recognize my added storage but I will get it with patience. Can you Partition in 25/75 portion instead of 50/50, I have a 32gb micro sd on an OTG adapter connected to a powered hub, EX Explorer sees the card no problem but the FireTv doesn't, and I want to add room for apps but also to record programs from Kodi with the PVR client from IPTV. I am able to connect a small keyboard this way to the FireTV stick via the Hub.
Hi TD, great info and as I'm not a techy as such, I will be stopping and starting this vid lots 😉. I would imagine that with more space on the Stick storage download speeds would be quicker. Only guessing though. 😄
at 4:24, despite saying it can be downloaded from a bunch of places, there is no direction as to where to download the REMOTE ADB SHELL program from within the firestick program interface itself. When you enter "REMOTE ADB SHELL app for firestick" on the Amazon.com search field, only one item comes up which says it's not compatible with any firestick device. So, where do you actually download this from when you're in the firestick program itself...? Can you download it from the downloader app, or do you have to go to some filelinked location to get it....?
Can you use the OTG adaptor and also use the CAT5 network adaptor that I use to connect the Firestick to the Internet? I don't use WiFi for my connection only because the direct network cable is more stable.
Great Video TDUK Thank you for your help and knowledge. I was able to duplicate installing to the USB Standisk but I'm not able to select copy and paste. I have a Bluetooth wireless Keyboard and my firestick remote. How do I select, copy, and paste In the ADB SHELL ? Cause when I type the long line in as the destination. And press enter I always get and error or 1 failure. I don't have a Bluetooth mouse and don't have the 3 port hub yet though. Any Ideas?
Hi TD' I used your guide and it works perfectly. currently using a 16gb sandisk ultra usb 3.0' partioned with private for full usage of the drive😁 so far I've only tried the k app and that works fine it did load a bit slow at first start but once loaded it's fine obviously it's not going to be as fast as the internal flash with it running on usb 2.0 happy days 👍
Great video. What I need to know is that two different people asked if this can be done using the 2nd Gen Firestick. You told one person Yes and the other person No, which one is it? Will it work on the 2nd Gen Firestick? Thanks
Great video but I wish you would have left a link for the SanDisk drive because you said it’s a special one that you have to use. That would’ve really been nice. Do you think you can add it to the description below
I think when u do the partial format the number(%) u type is for standard use. I wanted 25% formated for apps so I typed mixed 25 but the opposite happened I think, so I went back an typed mixed 75 an it looks to be correct now. I might be reading the file manager wrong it's only showing sd not the extended local memory on my flash drive, don't know why but now the sd is the larger number so I think it's reverse like I said. It's still putting apps on flash drive so it's working that's what matters. Thanks for the step by step process to make it work TDUK 👍🤟✌
Thanks for all your help, fun following you. I do have a question. I have many app on the memory stick and all was working well. I had only 1 gig of memory and a friend suggested a reboot of the fire stick, which I did. Now the FS does not see anything I used PM list packages and their there however the stick doesn't see them. Any advice? Thanks again for the channel
Great video TD, the only issue I have is that how do you safely remove the USB stick as there is nowhere on the Fire Stick 4K to disconnect safely. Your input is greatly appreciated.
Thank you 🙏 tech doctor uk This was one ☝️ of your best video. For a cord cutters . I use this on my Nivida shield and my fire stick , one again thank you
Brilliant video. Followed instructions and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately i do have an issue when i go into es explorer it wont read my usb. Also all the apps saved have a message saying cannot be launched because it is installed on usb drive that is not currently connected to your amazon fire tv. Please please help. Happy holidays
Ok after a few days I finally got a keyboard to connect w a dongle to the firestick and figured out how to select a line of text - ( I cant remember at the moment how I did it ... ) but now if I type m it gives me ; and a few more letters are in the wrong places. Must be a setting on the keyboard.. so I successfully moved a huge Kodi folder from firestick to drive. Thank you
Great video! Which scan disk drive did you use? I have a 3.0 memorex which I formatted and I can’t get it to show up when I plug it in like you do. Just wondering.
I have the 3.0 ugreen usb hub and also the same usb storage device that you used in video. Can i hardwire this also? I tried hardwiring it and it kept shutting down my Firestick. Any suggestions? Thanks 👍
Maaaaan! This video is awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. Could you help me where did you get the wireless control keyboard from. This is very handy.
I didn't see a wireless keyboard in this video, so I couldn't tell you which one he uses, but I use the PONYBRO Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad amzn.to/2CHCHrF which works great with the Fire Stick 4k or Fire TV Cube 4k to make any typing you have to do a lot easier, as well as having the built in mousepad, plus it's backlit, which makes it easy to use in low light conditions (once you figure out how to turn on the backlight... ;-) Of course, if you can always use Alexa on your remote to spell anything you'd like to input if it's recognized (you have to say "at sign" instead of "at" for instance). Inputting your usually-needing-to-be-typed commands using Alexa is a lot easier and faster, though it may take 2 or 3 tries to figure out how to say what you want her to type for you, but it's way easier and faster than typing. So, if you get used to using Alexa to input your commands, which is really easy to do in like one session, you may find yourself missing Alexa once you get the Wireless Keyboard/Mouse set up. But that's the only caveat I think you'll run into, as inputting and navigating with a wireless keyboard/mouse itself is a lot faster than using the remote. Now, if someone would come up with a wireless keyboard/mouse that included voice control for Alexa, that would be the best of all worlds. Until than, the Ponybro does a nice job, and I'm very happy with it's ease of use, snappy performance, and navigation abilities that are far superior to what you get with the remote.
Question about the USB drive. Did you happen to test a PNY Turbo 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - P-FD32GTBOP-GE,Grey? I got mine on Amazon and when I followed the steps and installed all my apps it is really slow and crashes. It says that it is a 3.0 USB but I can't really run anything because it is so slow and crashes. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! Glad you got your channel back!! Keep up the great work!!

& you must still be able to use
Amazon Ethernet Adapter? Great info TDUK
this is amazing! thank you for this info. I ran out of space on one of my firesticks and this works well. only issue I have is that new apps do not install on USB. I have to move them every time which is a bit of a pain. It only installs on USB if it is sideloaded.
@@TechDoctorUK thanks for the info.
How did you solve it?
Would there be any difference in using a 2 or 3 terabyte solid state drive rather than a thumb drive? Then, in conjunction with Channels DVR app it could be a way to have a setup very similar to a cable companies DVR service.
Is that possible?
Sure wish someone would answer this!
BRILLIANT video!!! I was hoping you'd show how to remove that typo'd entry from the stored messages (holding down the Select/OK button
Appreciate your feedback 👍
Great Video, Thank you. I now have space on my firestick :-)
Awesome video brother TDUK. Very informative. Taught me something new. Keep the content coming. Hope you enjoy your weekend. Much love and RESPECT
OTG cables only cost $1 or $2 from amazon. I am not familiar with the Cloner Alliance devices so I can't comment on that
All right! Now that we have 1 or 2 TB of storage on our Fire TV, would some bright coder please give us a DVR app to really make it useful ! ? ! ?
Possible to do a video how to move the data also to USB as with the likes of kodi this can be very large and still sits on internal storage?
Nice video I would like to know if it will work on my Toshiba Fire TV 4K
Does the 2nd generation fire stick have more memory then the 4K firestick which one do you recommend if not using 4K at the moment wanting to buy another firestick I'm sure the newest is the best but just wondering what you think about it
Good night Mr. tduk you and the guys are the greatest keep up the good work and 🤝Thanks very much 👍👍
Excellent video as always, works tremendously well. Not sure if you're aware but anyting downloaded from Amazon doesn't go on the USB. Just one question though, how do I check the space used an the space left on the USB?
I am interested in finding out more about this. My fire stick has only one gig left on it. Thank you for the video
This is the OTG cable I use, which allows you to add up to 3 USB devices (Wireless keyboard & mouse & USB drive, etc) amzn.to/38XEKnP
I also use a Samsung FIT Plus USB 3.1 Flash Drive 128GB which works well. amzn.to/2Zvd1HH I got the 128GB because it has faster performance, which is always better, but the 64GB version should work just as well, for about half the price.
@@TechDoctorUK I had this same problem but when I restarted my Fire Stick it came back with no problems.
Thx bought 32g.off amazon. Canada... 15bux cdn. Hope it works! It doesn't lag firestick wen u use adoptive storage? On my Nvidia shield it seems to lag.. I'm using 128gb ssd drive
Hi,
If I wanted to revert back to just internal storage is it possible to do without doing a factory reset and do you have a video on it?
Thanks
Thanks TechDoctorUK, appreciate the update
Works a treat Doc thanks very much you are the best
Mine is the 3rd gen, a little square with the dongle and it’s code name is needle not mantis like your video. Does not recognizing the same USB from your video. Simply does it not work because I have an older generation stick OS 6.2.6.8?
TDUK, this is amazing this will be great for firestick users.👍👍👍👍
Great video, did this to one firestick and will try it again on another.Would this work using to 256 GB usb stick ?
A link to your downloads page would be helpful....where to get remote adb shell
Even though Amazon recommends that not to use a storage capacity bigger than 128GB and no external HDD, there has been videos of people using a 2TB external HDD and it works (they are saying that that’s the biggest size it will work with and the fire tv device has to have fire is 7 or later for it to work).
UPDATE: there’s a video from Chris Waite from March talking about this.
Wow it's just taken me over 2 hours to move one app. Awesome video! Can I move the Amazon apps or just apps I've added myself
This looks awesome. Does this mean that if you download films via ES File Explorer they will go straight to USB?
You will have to move them over. ADM uses to make it possible to point to the external, but it doesn't seem to work on 4k Pro.
You solved my biggest blunder after following your guide for Retroarch/Kodi for the fire TV devices. Freaking Legend!
@@TechDoctorUK Do you reckon this will work for the SD card slot on the tv fire box? It detects it just like USB
@@TechDoctorUK Odd enough it only gives me the option of transferring native Apps to the SD card. It's a restriction. They must of not wanted people to use it for external storage. Reference model number B00U3FPN4U
Great work Dr. Do we still have to use this method NOW to move Apps from internal to external storage or there's an easier way? Many thanks.
This is the only way at the moment
First, I want to say how much I appreciate everything you do for the streaming community. I have a question if you would be so kind.
Am I to assume, it's not possible to move Prime Video or Amazon Music to attached internal USB storage through ADB Shell? I got failure response. assuming they use more than 1 package for the programs to operate on purpose.
Excellent video. Thanks so much 😊
Brilliant vid; thanks. When you were working within ADB Shell, you were using a copy/paste technique to avoid retyping that long USB Partion ID. Can you please share that copy.paste trick. It definitely would come in handy when having to move those stubborn apps to the USB. Much appreciated
Install the official fire tv app on your phone and you can use that to copy /paste to your firestick
@@TechDoctorUKthx
I was moving right along beautifully until I needed to scroll up and down through the package list, only find I couldn't with just my FS, which is why I asked days ago if a keyboard was needed. Would have been nice to know that at the onset so I could have ordered one and have been prepared for this endeavor. Perhaps you might want to include that bit of info in the future when such is relative to know.
you can do it with the firestick remote. you just keep clicking up or down until you see it move.. it takes a minute to work through the apps / space .. but it works
Thanks tduk works a treat 😃 just one thing where can I see how much external storage I have I can see internal but not external?
If I follow your instructions, I should be able to move my Kodi App to my External Storage, and run it from there? Right?👍🏽
After I clicked ADB Shell “Connect” it’s just buffering. Does it take this long? It’s been 1/2 hr + and it’s not connecting. Any thoughts?
Its on my downloads page - www.techdoctoruk.com/sdm_downloads/remote-adb/
Can you use the OTG adaptor and also use the CAT5 network adaptor that I use to connect the Firestick to the Internet?
I don't use WiFi for my connection only because the direct network cable is more stable.
Yes, but a OTG cable and then a USB ethernet adapter like - amzn.to/2TNenbm . This will give you ethernet connectivity on your Firestick
Awsome video TechDoctorUK
Great video. What I need to know is that two different people asked if this can be done using the 2nd Gen Firestick. You told one person Yes and the other person No, which one is it? Will it work on the 2nd Gen Firestick? Thanks
@@TechDoctorUK That makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the reply.
Appreciate your support 👍
Thanks for all your help, fun following you. I do have a question. I have many app on the memory stick and all was working well. I had only 1 gig of memory and a friend suggested a reboot of the fire stick, which I did. Now the FS does not see anything I used PM list packages and their there however the stick doesn't see them. Any advice?
Thanks again for the channel
Great video TD, the only issue I have is that how do you safely remove the USB stick as there is nowhere on the Fire Stick 4K to disconnect safely. Your input is greatly appreciated.
under your firestick settings/firestick there is an eject USB option
good work man. I will have to borrow this idea
This is a Game Changer! Thanks For This!
this is awsome we have been dealing with space issues
Great work TDUK, best tip for the 4K yet 👍
Thank you 🙏 tech doctor uk
This was one ☝️ of your best video. For a cord cutters .
I use this on my Nivida shield and my fire stick , one again thank you
Hi Tech; how can I get a remote that has TV controls such as last channel number and favorite etc.?
Brilliant video. Followed instructions and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately i do have an issue when i go into es explorer it wont read my usb. Also all the apps saved have a message saying cannot be launched because it is installed on usb drive that is not currently connected to your amazon fire tv. Please please help. Happy holidays
Damn your name says it all, good video TechDoctorUK 😎😎
When I add my flash drive (my disk name reads: needle:/ $ - not like yours that reads: mantis:/ $) help?
can this process also work on the FireTV 4K?
Ok after a few days I finally got a keyboard to connect w a dongle to the firestick and figured out how to select a line of text - ( I cant remember at the moment how I did it ... ) but now if I type m it gives me ; and a few more letters are in the wrong places. Must be a setting on the keyboard.. so I successfully moved a huge Kodi folder from firestick to drive. Thank you
Excellent, thanks so much TechDoctorUk 👍
At 15:48 you say you are going to cut out the bad command from previous commands. How do you remove bad command entries from previous commands?
Great video 👍👍👍
Always very informative
🗣 Go TDUK
Great video! Which scan disk drive did you use? I have a 3.0 memorex which I formatted and I can’t get it to show up when I plug it in like you do. Just wondering.
Where do you get remote ADB shell?
I have the 3.0 ugreen usb hub and also the same usb storage device that you used in video. Can i hardwire this also? I tried hardwiring it and it kept shutting down my Firestick. Any suggestions? Thanks 👍
Maaaaan! This video is awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. Could you help me where did you get the wireless control keyboard from. This is very handy.
I didn't see a wireless keyboard in this video, so I couldn't tell you which one he uses, but I use the PONYBRO Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad
amzn.to/2CHCHrF which works great with the Fire Stick 4k or Fire TV Cube 4k to make any typing you have to do a lot easier, as well as having the built in mousepad, plus it's backlit, which makes it easy to use in low light conditions (once you figure out how to turn on the backlight... ;-)
Of course, if you can always use Alexa on your remote to spell anything you'd like to input if it's recognized (you have to say "at sign" instead of "at" for instance).
Awesome video! I knew there had to be a way to do this! Now I just have to get VUDU on my fire tv.
Glad I could help
Techdoctor can you please have the instructions for the older firestick version 5.0
