Thank you for this info, it worked out great today. I was getting so tired of running out of storage on my Firestick 4k. Added a 128 GB flash drive, created two partitions, and moved my apps per your instructions. Only difference is I connected to the Firestick and ran the ADB commands from my PC. Saved a lot of time by typing on a full sized keyboard rather than trying to do it with the remote ;)

This also solved the annual "What do you buy a wealthy son for Christmas dilemma". Had considered the new dongle Nvidia Shield but it would not be Unique. I will also pre-load the 4K Firestick. This will be something None of his buddies will have. Thanks Again !!
I second J.French Rennier, and if you do this from your PC with ADB and the command line then be sure to kill the Remote ADB Shell app first to ensure your PC properly connects. (Makes the copy/paste part a lot easier if you don't have a wireless keyboard to connect)
BRAVO !!!! , this is exactly why I stick with you I saw this on xda as well as the root but you present it visually some of the cleaners you released were hit or miss and didnt work when the 4k first came out in October 2018 BUT you are always striving to do better things and we can all agree the 5.92gb of storage left after the OS simply isn't enough .This works great confirmed on my 4k stick.Im actually editing a video on this today, you got it done in great time and fashion .Well done to you and the XDA guys! I'm personally in everything tech however if its fire stick related tweaks, workarounds, hacks etc ...I'm always popping in on your channel to support and see what's going on , again well done!!! Cant say it enough this was needed .
Hi Tduk. Just wanted to give you an update. I got rid of the 4k fire tv pendant and got the 4k fire stick and the sandisk flash. I followed your instructions and the result was a success. Thanks again for your help in trying to work it out with the equipment I had.
OMG!! Did you know how long I was looking for a video like this my friend. Your a genius this it's one the best if not the best video for the fire stick. Thanks 4 a great video!!
The storage being eaten up by Amazon bloat & constant deleting of apps 2 save space, was driving me insane...have increased free storage from 1g to 3.5 & kept Kodi, after first 2 flash drives failed...I think I love you... 🤗
Wonderfully informative video. One question....how do you do the copy/paste thing? I know how to do it on my computer but how do you do it on the stick?

THANKS! Please advise: I use a VPN always ON with my FS 4K, doesn't this produce a IP Address that is really NOT my IP Address, and even that can change too! I believe that the IP A. that will come up right now is in Seattle, thus hiding the IP of Server here in Portland. Do I just ignore this???? Also, would it work just as well, in order to create more space in present storage, instead of doing it the way you are doing it, just Uninstall the APP and reinstall it and since you show us every APP dnld after setting this USB Drive up will be installed onto it.....WALA, you'd have it there, might just have to do some tweaks to it and use. Would this be Kosher? TKS michael
A VPN will mask your actual IP address through a separate server network making you appear to be somewhere you are not, which makes it more difficult to get your actual location. When I use my VPN, I tend to choose cities well outside my actual one and sometimes in a different city and state but in the same time zone. So yes, just ignore whatever IP address your VPN assigns you. I think I saw in a tutorial similar to this where the person said to not move VPN apps to USB. Something about it may not work correctly unless it's run internally or it may run slower or something. Those apps don't take up much space anyway, so I would just leave them internally -- as long as you installed one before applying the USB tweak.
This worked great for me, but I noticed that even though Kodi was installed on the usb stick, the addons and userdata files still installed on the firestick. which take up a 1.5 G. Any way to force the files to the USB drive?
I was wondering the same thing as Kodi is kind of useless without its addons and userdata files - it also makes the addons run incorrectly . have you reinstalled Kodi to see if a clean install with all new addons, etc end up on the USB> If you have I would love to know prior to my own experimenting - your labor could save me the time and heartache of finding I wasted my time
*TDUK* Very Smart guy, 🎓😁 There was a woman who asked me about this literally two days ago because she wanted to record her tv shows from her IPTV player on to a 4K stick but I had no idea how to get her app on to external storage. She had the OTG cable and thumb drive, but I couldn't find a way to move it over. Here you are bro, you figured it out. You are a freaking brain. P.S. I'm going to send her a link to this video. You might have a new subscriber very soon. I'll always be subbed to your channel.
Confirmed to anyone asking questions , follow his directions step by step and your good, its working great on 4k stick. I had a 8 GB USB stick laying around chose to format rather than the mixed as it's just 8gb and it works flawlessly! Great job to XDA & TECHDOCTORUK for the great visuals .Much easier to watch TDUK then read the tutorial for the visual learners.
Excellent video as always, works tremendously well. Not sure if you're aware but anyting downloaded from Amazon doesn't go on the USB. Just one question though, how do I check the space used an the space left on the USB?
Hi great video but if I download anything in an application it saves to my fire stick storage which wipes it out, any idea what I’ve done wrong ? Cheers
Great video! Which scan disk drive did you use? I have a 3.0 memorex which I formatted and I can’t get it to show up when I plug it in like you do. Just wondering.
Does the 2nd generation fire stick have more memory then the 4K firestick which one do you recommend if not using 4K at the moment wanting to buy another firestick I'm sure the newest is the best but just wondering what you think about it
Yes thank you so much! It's been driving me crazy that I couldn't get this to work, and what's strange is the fact that it was working before lol. Well I think I got it figured out now....thanks to you sir. I will be subscribing after this . Thanks again TDUk
Great video ! This is a huge benefit for fire devices, given their absolutely stingy internal storage size. Very well done ! Thank you, & cheer's,... 👍👍👍
Is this possible? Setup a Cloner Alliance ultra with a FIRESTICK with additional memory via OTG cable? If so what type of OTG cable will I need? As always your help is much appreciated.
Wow you actually got it to work !You the man! I'm sure you helped many Amazon Fire Stick users. I unfortunately returned my AFS because of this and after installing cody very low system memory so for me NvidiaSheild. Can you plug into a 1TB drive? & you must still be able to use Amazon Ethernet Adapter? Great info TDUK
Would there be any difference in using a 2 or 3 terabyte solid state drive rather than a thumb drive? Then, in conjunction with Channels DVR app it could be a way to have a setup very similar to a cable companies DVR service. Is that possible?
I noticed you used the USB drive as well as a keyboard. What did you use to connect multiple USB devices? I have an OTG cable with 3 USB connectors. Is it safe to use that?
Hi TD, great info and as I'm not a techy as such, I will be stopping and starting this vid lots 😉. I would imagine that with more space on the Stick storage download speeds would be quicker. Only guessing though. 😄
Maaaaan! This video is awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. Could you help me where did you get the wireless control keyboard from. This is very handy.
I didn't see a wireless keyboard in this video, so I couldn't tell you which one he uses, but I use the PONYBRO Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad amzn.to/2CHCHrF which works great with the Fire Stick 4k or Fire TV Cube 4k to make any typing you have to do a lot easier, as well as having the built in mousepad, plus it's backlit, which makes it easy to use in low light conditions (once you figure out how to turn on the backlight... ;-) Of course, if you can always use Alexa on your remote to spell anything you'd like to input if it's recognized (you have to say "at sign" instead of "at" for instance). Inputting your usually-needing-to-be-typed commands using Alexa is a lot easier and faster, though it may take 2 or 3 tries to figure out how to say what you want her to type for you, but it's way easier and faster than typing. So, if you get used to using Alexa to input your commands, which is really easy to do in like one session, you may find yourself missing Alexa once you get the Wireless Keyboard/Mouse set up. But that's the only caveat I think you'll run into, as inputting and navigating with a wireless keyboard/mouse itself is a lot faster than using the remote. Now, if someone would come up with a wireless keyboard/mouse that included voice control for Alexa, that would be the best of all worlds. Until than, the Ponybro does a nice job, and I'm very happy with it's ease of use, snappy performance, and navigation abilities that are far superior to what you get with the remote.
First, I want to say how much I appreciate everything you do for the streaming community. I have a question if you would be so kind. Am I to assume, it's not possible to move Prime Video or Amazon Music to attached internal USB storage through ADB Shell? I got failure response. assuming they use more than 1 package for the programs to operate on purpose.
Thanks for all your help, fun following you. I do have a question. I have many app on the memory stick and all was working well. I had only 1 gig of memory and a friend suggested a reboot of the fire stick, which I did. Now the FS does not see anything I used PM list packages and their there however the stick doesn't see them. Any advice? Thanks again for the channel
Great video but I wish you would have left a link for the SanDisk drive because you said it’s a special one that you have to use. That would’ve really been nice. Do you think you can add it to the description below
Great Video TDUK Thank you for your help and knowledge. I was able to duplicate installing to the USB Standisk but I'm not able to select copy and paste. I have a Bluetooth wireless Keyboard and my firestick remote. How do I select, copy, and paste In the ADB SHELL ? Cause when I type the long line in as the destination. And press enter I always get and error or 1 failure. I don't have a Bluetooth mouse and don't have the 3 port hub yet though. Any Ideas?
Mine is the 3rd gen, a little square with the dongle and it’s code name is needle not mantis like your video. Does not recognizing the same USB from your video. Simply does it not work because I have an older generation stick OS 6.2.6.8?
Question about the USB drive. Did you happen to test a PNY Turbo 32GB USB 3.0 Flash Drive - P-FD32GTBOP-GE,Grey? I got mine on Amazon and when I followed the steps and installed all my apps it is really slow and crashes. It says that it is a 3.0 USB but I can't really run anything because it is so slow and crashes. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you! Glad you got your channel back!! Keep up the great work!!
Great video. What I need to know is that two different people asked if this can be done using the 2nd Gen Firestick. You told one person Yes and the other person No, which one is it? Will it work on the 2nd Gen Firestick? Thanks
Just get an OTG cable, and a USB 3.0 or 3.1 drive (formatted to FAT32). Plug the OTG cable into the Fire Stick 4k or Fire TV Cube 4k, then plug the USB drive into the OTG cable and it will show a notification on screen that it detects the USB drive. If you look in Settings > My Fire TV > About > Storage, you will see your USB drive showing up as new additional available storage. Any new apps you install that have been marked by the developer as being available to be installed on external locations will be installed to the USB drive and not on the limited internal storage that comes with the Fire Stick going forward. From there, you can simply uninstall any apps that have been installed on your internal storage that are eating up additional space you'd like to free up, and when reinstalled they will be installed on the external storage you've added (if the developer has marked them as able to be located in an external drive). You can get additional instructions on how to manually move existing applications that are on your internal storage to the external USB drive by watching these videos on setting up additional storage. Be aware that some apps that you use require a lot of processing power and are better left on the internal storage location to allow them to maintain optimum performance. If you move an app to the external storage and find it doesn't perform well once there can simply be moved back to the internal storage, but most will run just fine with no noticeable degradation of performance from the external location. This is the OTG cable I use, which allows you to add up to 3 USB devices (Wireless keyboard & mouse & USB drive, etc) amzn.to/38XEKnP I also use a Samsung FIT Plus USB 3.1 Flash Drive 128GB which works well. amzn.to/2Zvd1HH I got the 128GB because it has faster performance, which is always better, but the 64GB version should work just as well, for about half the price.
Brilliant vid; thanks. When you were working within ADB Shell, you were using a copy/paste technique to avoid retyping that long USB Partion ID. Can you please share that copy.paste trick. It definitely would come in handy when having to move those stubborn apps to the USB. Much appreciated
Thx bought 32g.off amazon. Canada... 15bux cdn. Hope it works! It doesn't lag firestick wen u use adoptive storage? On my Nvidia shield it seems to lag.. I'm using 128gb ssd drive
Brilliant video. Followed instructions and it worked perfectly. Unfortunately i do have an issue when i go into es explorer it wont read my usb. Also all the apps saved have a message saying cannot be launched because it is installed on usb drive that is not currently connected to your amazon fire tv. Please please help. Happy holidays
I have the 3.0 ugreen usb hub and also the same usb storage device that you used in video. Can i hardwire this also? I tried hardwiring it and it kept shutting down my Firestick. Any suggestions? Thanks 👍
Hi Tduk. Great video. Do I have to wait till the USB flash drive finishes formatting before I do anything cause I started the formatting process and the light is still blinking. I have a 128gb drive
I've been waiting for this forever now!!! You should include the tutorial for reversing this, too, though. It could screw a lot of people up. I mean, what happens when you remove the USB drive, and it can no longer find these apps?
Thanks man! I just watched the new video, and you explained just about everything I wanted to know. I can't wait to do this!! (As soon as I get paid, and order a new SD card for my USB adaptor.) This is golden!!! This is what we've all been waiting for!!! I sent Amazon a link, and told them they really need to implement this in the Fire TV OS. It wouldn't be that hard to make this an end user feature. I think we were all running really low on space, right?!!
Do you have a way to move apps from usb to stick? I had factory reset the stick then followed you instructions. Everything I’m installing goes to usb. I’d like to move IPvanish and TIvimate back to the stick. Should I reformat the stick, install what I want on the stick and then reformat usb and install what I want there?
Just want to mention, I was struggling with this, I could not get the app to copy over with the pm move-package command, but it worked after I used sm to format the volume.
Dude, I've tried a dozen USB sticks and none have worked..are we supposed to format that drive inside ADB shell as well? You did this by the sounds of it.
I followed your video and added a usb drive to my firestick about 9 months ago. Everything worked great. This week my firestick failed to boot up. Just fire tv logo comes up, but hit won't complete boot up and go to the home screen. Any tips for restoring my firestick?
Hi TD, another very useful video, thanks. Is there anyway to do this on on previous version to 4k firestick or is it a case shelling out for the 4k version? Cheers
Hi TechDoctorUK, can you add the link for the exact OTG cable you bought. I bought one from Amazon UK but it did not work with my 4K Firestick. Does that mean all OTG cables are not compatible? Thanks for your help, you have become one of my main go-to for tech help.
Thanks so much for taking the time to make these very useful videos. Will this also work on the 2nd Generation firetv, can i use the SD as internal storage?
I know this is a older feed but purchased all the stuff you suggested could not get the Fire TV Stick to recognize the Scan Disk Ultra Flair or several other brands. Did some research. Another RUclips tech support called Troypoint with a newer feed from Feb. 2020 stated Fire TV Sticks 4K Gen. 1 & 2 will not work I assume from your older feed that your Fire TV Stick must have been Generation 2. Can you help me out with this issue and do you have to have File Explorer installed at the same time for this to work? PS: Could there be a change in the new updates from Amazon to prevent this process?
i have the 2nd generation firestick and do i have to buy the sandisk drive or any type? Seems everyone is recommending it. i love the idea to expand the storage
Come on techdoctoruk !!!! I'm a subscriber I got everything hook already but I need the most important thing to finish, the abd shell app that you said you have on your download page ....PLEASE WHERE I CAN FIND THAT DOWNLOAD PAGE OR HOW WE DO THAT???????? PLSASE ?????????

This looks awesome. Does this mean that if you download films via ES File Explorer they will go straight to USB?
You will have to move them over. ADM uses to make it possible to point to the external, but it doesn't seem to work on 4k Pro.
Wow it's just taken me over 2 hours to move one app. Awesome video! Can I move the Amazon apps or just apps I've added myself
Possible to do a video how to move the data also to USB as with the likes of kodi this can be very large and still sits on internal storage?
Works on the Toshiba FireTV, many thanks. I have been out of space for a while, this solves the issue!
Thanks tduk works a treat 😃 just one thing where can I see how much external storage I have I can see internal but not external?
OTG cables only cost $1 or $2 from amazon. I am not familiar with the Cloner Alliance devices so I can't comment on that
Wow you actually got it to work !You the man! I'm sure you helped many Amazon Fire Stick users. I unfortunately returned my AFS because of this and after installing cody very low system memory so for me NvidiaSheild. Can you plug into a 1TB drive? & you must still be able to use
Amazon Ethernet Adapter? Great info TDUK
Awesome video brother TDUK. Very informative. Taught me something new. Keep the content coming. Hope you enjoy your weekend. Much love and RESPECT
Excellent video. Thanks so much 😊
good work man. I will have to borrow this idea
Would there be any difference in using a 2 or 3 terabyte solid state drive rather than a thumb drive? Then, in conjunction with Channels DVR app it could be a way to have a setup very similar to a cable companies DVR service.
Is that possible?
Sure wish someone would answer this!
I noticed you used the USB drive as well as a keyboard. What did you use to connect multiple USB devices? I have an OTG cable with 3 USB connectors. Is it safe to use that?
If I follow your instructions, I should be able to move my Kodi App to my External Storage, and run it from there? Right?👍🏽
After I clicked ADB Shell “Connect” it’s just buffering. Does it take this long? It’s been 1/2 hr + and it’s not connecting. Any thoughts?
Good night Mr. tduk you and the guys are the greatest keep up the good work and 🤝Thanks very much 👍👍
Hi TD, great info and as I'm not a techy as such, I will be stopping and starting this vid lots 😉. I would imagine that with more space on the Stick storage download speeds would be quicker. Only guessing though. 😄
Maaaaan! This video is awesome, this is exactly what I was looking for. Could you help me where did you get the wireless control keyboard from. This is very handy.
I didn't see a wireless keyboard in this video, so I couldn't tell you which one he uses, but I use the PONYBRO Mini Wireless Keyboard with Touchpad
amzn.to/2CHCHrF which works great with the Fire Stick 4k or Fire TV Cube 4k to make any typing you have to do a lot easier, as well as having the built in mousepad, plus it's backlit, which makes it easy to use in low light conditions (once you figure out how to turn on the backlight... ;-)
Of course, if you can always use Alexa on your remote to spell anything you'd like to input if it's recognized (you have to say "at sign" instead of "at" for instance).
Works a treat Doc thanks very much you are the best
Thanks for all your help, fun following you. I do have a question. I have many app on the memory stick and all was working well. I had only 1 gig of memory and a friend suggested a reboot of the fire stick, which I did. Now the FS does not see anything I used PM list packages and their there however the stick doesn't see them. Any advice?
Thanks again for the channel
Great video but I wish you would have left a link for the SanDisk drive because you said it’s a special one that you have to use. That would’ve really been nice. Do you think you can add it to the description below
this is awsome we have been dealing with space issues
Great video 👌.
Would like to expand to a 2 gig external hard drive...is there a specific brand you would recommend to use with my 4k fire stick.
Do you mean 2TB?
Great Video TDUK Thank you for your help and knowledge. I was able to duplicate installing to the USB Standisk but I'm not able to select copy and paste. I have a Bluetooth wireless Keyboard and my firestick remote. How do I select, copy, and paste In the ADB SHELL ? Cause when I type the long line in as the destination. And press enter I always get and error or 1 failure. I don't have a Bluetooth mouse and don't have the 3 port hub yet though. Any Ideas?
All right! Now that we have 1 or 2 TB of storage on our Fire TV, would some bright coder please give us a DVR app to really make it useful ! ? ! ?
TDUK, this is amazing this will be great for firestick users.👍👍👍👍
Hi Tech; how can I get a remote that has TV controls such as last channel number and favorite etc.?
Great video. What I need to know is that two different people asked if this can be done using the 2nd Gen Firestick. You told one person Yes and the other person No, which one is it? Will it work on the 2nd Gen Firestick? Thanks
@@TechDoctorUK That makes a lot more sense. Thanks for the reply.
Great Video, Thank you. I now have space on my firestick :-)
I am interested in finding out more about this. My fire stick has only one gig left on it. Thank you for the video
This is the OTG cable I use, which allows you to add up to 3 USB devices (Wireless keyboard & mouse & USB drive, etc) amzn.to/38XEKnP
I also use a Samsung FIT Plus USB 3.1 Flash Drive 128GB which works well. amzn.to/2Zvd1HH I got the 128GB because it has faster performance, which is always better, but the 64GB version should work just as well, for about half the price.
Brilliant explanation for the 4K fire stick users but will it work on the series 2 fire stick
TechDoctorUK thanks for getting back to me TD
Brilliant vid; thanks. When you were working within ADB Shell, you were using a copy/paste technique to avoid retyping that long USB Partion ID. Can you please share that copy.paste trick. It definitely would come in handy when having to move those stubborn apps to the USB. Much appreciated
Install the official fire tv app on your phone and you can use that to copy /paste to your firestick
@@TechDoctorUKthx
Thanks 👍
Thanks TDUK. This is quite the work to achieve what you want, but does this work with Plex or HDHOMERUN?
@@TechDoctorUK What route would be best? This way or New Nvidia shield? I'm stuck in between
A link to your downloads page would be helpful....where to get remote adb shell
Thanks TechDoctorUK, appreciate the update
Hi Tduk. Great video. Do I have to wait till the USB flash drive finishes formatting before I do anything cause I started the formatting process and the light is still blinking. I have a 128gb drive
@@TechDoctorUK yes I am dedicating it as a storage for the fire tv 3rd gen
do that remote Adb shell App needs to always be running 24/7? or its ok to force stop it?
This is a Game Changer! Thanks For This!
@@TechDoctorUK I had this same problem but when I restarted my Fire Stick it came back with no problems.
Thank you so much. Great video 😃
Great video! Would this work in combination with an Ethernet adaptor? I tried using one the other day and my firestick kept restarting. Any solutions?
BRILLIANT video!!! I was hoping you'd show how to remove that typo'd entry from the stored messages (holding down the Select/OK button
Appreciate your feedback 👍
Amazing ,what happen when usb drive is full ?Does it automatically save on 4k storage again? Many thanks
Techdoctor can you please have the instructions for the older firestick version 5.0
Cheers
The issue is the commands are only available in fireOS 6. If you check your device, I believe it will be running FireOS 5.x.x
Ok, I understand now, looks like I'll have to upgrade them all ouch. Thanks for that.
I would start with 1 first and make sure you are happy with how things work. If you like it , then you can replace the others too👍
@@TechDoctorUKyes, good idea doc , I was in the process of placing an order. Cheers mate.
Excellent, thanks so much TechDoctorUk 👍
Hi TechDoctorUK, can you add the link for the exact OTG cable you bought. I bought one from Amazon UK but it did not work with my 4K Firestick. Does that mean all OTG cables are not compatible? Thanks for your help, you have become one of my main go-to for tech help.
can you do a cut & paste with apps already on my FS4k (i.e. kodi), or would I have to start from scratch? GREAT VIDEO BTW! 👍🏻
Thanks so much for taking the time to make these very useful videos. Will this also work on the 2nd Generation firetv, can i use the SD as internal storage?
Unfortunately, this process requires Android version 6 or higher and the 2nd generation firestv runs Android 5
@@TechDoctorUK thanks for the info... it definitively works on my fire sticks👍🏽 firetv will have to wait. Thanks again...
Where do you get remote ADB shell?
Awsome video TechDoctorUK
Great work 👍. Where can I find the remote ADB Shell ??
type this bit.ly/tduk2019 in to downloader. When you get there, click on the hamburger menu and select downloads. All the apps are there
i have the 2nd generation firestick and do i have to buy the sandisk drive or any type? Seems everyone is recommending it. i love the idea to expand the storage
Sorry, this doesn't not work on the 2nd gen stick
@@TechDoctorUK thanks and that sucks
Come on techdoctoruk !!!! I'm a subscriber I got everything hook already but I need the most important thing to finish, the abd shell app that you said you have on your download page ....PLEASE WHERE I CAN FIND THAT DOWNLOAD PAGE OR HOW WE DO THAT???????? PLSASE ?????????
