Lion King is based on Hamlet, so thanks, Shakespeare, for discussing all these topics a long time ago. We simply have to get the trend of reading back.
The Lion King is a film that teaches us responsibility. Simba, out of a false sense of guilt runs away from his throne, his responsibility to his kingdom, and meets Timone and Pumba who teach him No worries, but there is no meaning if all you do is sit and eat all day. Scar is a lazy monarch because he refuses to take responsibility when Pride Rock has no food and the animals are starving. When Simba gets a knock on the head, he faces what he was avoiding and became the kind of King his father was.
I think he's a bit hard on Simba; taken out of context, what Peterson says makes sense. However, Scar told Simba that he was responsible for his father's death, an extremely traumatic event for him. To cope with the shame, Simba spent time with Timon and Pumbaa, who saved him from death by taking him to an oasis full of food. Simba would have neglected himself otherwise and died. Likewise, they sheltered him from Scar who would have sought to kill him. Simba needed time away from the traumatic event to be able to cope with it so as later to process it. Only when Simba was truly ready did destiny appropriately and timely call him back to his true purpose: to overthrow Scar, his selfish uncle, and afterwards to rule the Pride lands. In short, Timon and Pumbaa are not as toxic as Peterson makes them out to be and Simba is likewise not as guilty. He was only a cub when his father died and had no one else who might safely take care of him. Self-responsibility is great, but adopting perfectionism all the time is unhealthy; Simba did the best he could under the given circumstances.
Well put. I feel like JP is projecting his own disgust towards himself onto Simba (perhaps JP felt like that towards himself during certain seasons of his life and he has yet to forgive himself.) It's almost irrational how disgusted he is by an animation of a fictitious lion.
This, this is exactly what makes me object to Peterson. He demands I take more responsibility without authority over the fruits of my labors. It's slavery to take all responsibility and see no profit.

Brilliant. The depth of understanding Dr. Peterson has is stunning. The reason why he is a teacher is abundantly clear. When a person attacks him, it is through ignorance or evil. Ignorance is a condition which can be treated by the willingness to know more, to be more completely human. Is wilful ignorace worse? Of course it is. To do nothing when the facts are known is to be juvenile at best and a coward at worst. To openly attack truthfulness is sheer wickedness. This is the light against the dark, friends. Know the truth. Stand with it. Thank you again, dear Doctor. Keep the lessons coming.
My dad took me to see it when I was five, and I was pretty much just traumatized by it. Very dark themes for a supposed "kids" movie. But then that's no surprise from Disney, when you know the truth about it.
Mr Peterson’s lecture series on the lion king is probably one of the best things I’ve ever seen or heard. Absolutely love it and it changed the way I view certain things for the better!
An interesting side note, regarding when Dr. Peterson comment that it's a wonder Nala missed Simba: That is a woman's superpower. She can see the potential in a man she's interested in and will spend considerable effort making him useful. The two main plots of a romance are "Beauty and the Beast" and "Strong Woman and the Coward." In both, a woman encounters a man who has potential but, through either cruelty or mildness, is useless as a partner. But through mutual development, she becomes accepting and he becomes useful. The dark side to this idea is the woman who cannot separate her vision of potential from realistic expectation. I think most people have encountered a woman who believes she can change a man who has no interest in changing for her, and those relationships never end well.
@@elmateo77 It’s a cartoon, they are humanize characters. Scar probably would have killed Nala in reality since dominant male lions kill cubs from previous dominant males. Nala was said to be the daughter of an another male that left the pride.

Peterson talks about aiming toward the highest possible goal. When he has made political statements, it's been to bring attention to policies that are causing incredible harm, such as the situation with the Dutch farmers and the government-induced shortages of food. I fail to see why this doesn't line up with the same JBP who talked about the Biblical lectures. There are absolutely evil people using absolutely ignorant people to achieve mass murder. This video accurately describes what I'm going through right now, and that amazed and freaked me out at the same time. I'm trying to better myself by working out and upping my grades in college. My self-improvement journey was begun by something like the explanation at 8:26 in the video. I didn't have anyone to place those ideals onto, so I made up two beings in my head. One was the ideal man I wanted to become, and another was the woman, as described in the video. Both judged me (and still are) for wasting my life away, and that led to me to begin changing myself. I'm only three months into this. I still got things to change, but I'm losing fat and putting on muscle. My grades are still questionable, but at least I'm retaining the knowledge now. Yesterday, was the day I decided to seriously attempt to end my addiction. What it is, I won't say because embarrassment. This all stems from two people I made up in my head, so maybe there are some other issues I'm going to run into for that. It may even make me delusional or something, but it's working out so far. I think.
You don't have to say anything, but I struggled with a porn addiction for over 18 years. The freedom I was longing for and love and acceptance was finally found in Jesus Christ. He has been there with me through everything, thick and thin. I also love Jordan, I think he is a great teacher. Just know there is a better one, a perfect one, who loves you and His name is Jesus. Many blessings my friend
Keep going. There's plenty of dignity in the choices you're making, whether it all turns out how you want it to or not. At the end of the day, you can sleep well knowing you at least tried to take steps towards improving yourself when you very easily could not have. Best case scenario is you turn into that person you imagine, you find the woman you imagine, and then you can set different goals for yourself and find even more meaning. Best of luck.
You know what makes a society productive? Love. From the bottom up. From the top down. And everything in between. Honesty and trust are byproducts and fruits of love. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE. LOVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Peterson is parenting through his lectures and I like it. He's also noticed the same thing I did, that women do often have to "nag", or rather, finish the parenting process by having certain reasonable expectations. It only takes some reason to win over the selfish and hurt ego, and there's no longer a boy, but a man in front of you.

I don’t know if you addressed this, but one of the big things holding Simba back was his unresolved guilt he held for causing his father’s death, as lied to by Scar.

I'm still in the states of adolescence and pleasure seeking, I want to grow up and mature but don't have good role models and lack ambition. It's scary to consider the possibility of not living up to my potential and wasting away but this gives me some hope.
I guess he met Nala at the right moment, before it was too late. What is very common these days is to see men well into their 40s behaving like that, and a reasonable woman will not be interested in them at all. So it is too late

This is exactly why I am stunned every time I see someone with "hakuna matata" foolishly tattooed. Have they ever bothered seeing the ending? Simba outright rejects the selfish "hakuna matata" life, fights for his kingdom, and reclaims his throne. The meaning of The Lion King is the exact opposite of "hakuna matata" -- the meaning it's to be selfless, honorable, and step up to your duties.

To the final statement: Nala and Simba were childhood friends who were set to one day rule together. When scar told the lie that Simba had died, she was a cub who had no way of knowing the truth so she truly believed her best friend and possible crush was dead. When she finds him again, she is thankful that at the very least he is alive, because even in his sorry state, she understands as long as Simba is still alive, there is still hope for the both of them and the whole kingdom.

The female lion letting Simba know who he really is and trying to separate him from his dopey friends makes me rethink a lot about my ex. She dumped me, but there are so many reasons why. But I did everything wrong, everything to ruin the relationship, but it was my first relationship and I didn't know I was making a fool out of myself. We were perfect. People looked up to us. 4.5 years together, I wanted to propose to her, having known her for 5 years. But as time went by, her standards raised because of her career and she saw how much potential I had. I was learning online business, marketing, selling, closing, etc... but I kept going back to my bad friends that she hated. I dug my own grave. I'm living this victim mindset because I can't forgive my failures and now fear failing anything I do, and doubt all my abilities. It's been 3.5 years now since I was dumped, I moved back to mom's house far from the city, it's half dead here, too peaceful, too comfortable, in the basement, gaining a bunch of weight, and depressed hoping and wishing for no tomorrow, it's hell. I'm grateful of what I have and that I have food and water, but I have all these opportunities and can't seem to do anything. I keep punishing myself, I have a really hard time forgiving, apologizing, accepting that I've failed, its obviously nothing, and should easily move on about it but I cant think, idk wtf is wrong with me. People make mistakes and move on, but it feels like I'm stuck 3 years back and can't put a foot forward. I can't focus, I'm stressed, I can't cry since it's "feminine", I can't do anything, I see black. "boo hoo" says all the men that have figured it out. I haven't yet. I can't take it anymore.
Bro you seriously need Jesus, like I ve been through so much pain and only God can help me. And I know he can help you too. Learn to forgive yourself. Focus on smaller goals like focus on your stability, make sure your family has what they need because they are helping you. And when you are ready go move out and work hard. Be open to meeting someone again to start a family of your own. In the meantime when you are feeling sad or hopeless, pray.
You lost her for a reason, brother. So you can learn. That's the masculine imperative. You need to go out and have trials and build up the strength you need. Cry it out man. When shit gets hard for me I'll just scream into a pillow at the top of my lungs. You need to let that shit out, let it go and move on. We get lessons like that to become stronger. Don't let this valuable lesson go to waste. I love this quote from Marcus Aurelius: 'Think of yourself as dead. You have lived your life. Now take what's left and live it properly.' You sound like a good dude, obviously that girl wouldn't have been with you in the first place if you weren't. So just understand you're good and go forward and also understand there are billions of women out there, a perfect one tailor made for you. I say all this because I was almost in the exact same position and this is what I would honestly tell to a younger version of my self. You have no mountain to climb, my guy, just layers of darkness to remove that aren't you. Hope you find peace.
It's time for you to join a band of brothers, my friend. I recommend getting into martial arts (I suggest Brazilian jiu jitsu). It will help you understand others and, more importantly, yourself better. If money is an issue then a local sporting league like basketball is a good alternative. The main point is to get around other men and to get physical.
It's good to look at yourself when a relationship ends and see where you might have contributed to the problems. It's not good to put your ex on a pedestal and think she was a Saint. No one is perfect. You have the ability to make things better. Reminiscing about your ex is not helping. You need to figuratively bury her in the past and move on. If you must cry, do it alone in your room. The first thing you need to do is, Set attainable goals. The second thing to do is to get your body in shape, get off social media for awhile and start working on your mind as well. Work on your goals as you work on your body and mind. I have been through things that most people will never go through. What helped me get through them is knowing "this will pass, it can't go on forever". Get into hobbies you enjoy, get back out there with some friends that are successful in life. Be around successful people. Mimic their positive traits. I hope things get better for you.

3:06 THE LION KING - Walt Disney. “Freud started doing the analysis of these spontaneous fantasies. Then Jung linked up dreams to mythology across history. A lot of that is embedded in this movie.”
I think it's a mistake to say that the feminine symbolically represents chaos. I think it's rather the child that represents chaos, the feminine is only the advocate for the child, since she stands between the father and the child. The mother discovers the child's virtues via positive reinforcement in the first years. The masculine is the advocate for the world, since the father is what stands between the mother/child and reality/society. The child represents chaos, but it also represents creativity (as opposed to the adult, who is conscientious/orderly but rigid). In a society that is overproducing, you want chaos/creativity in order to invest in new niches. In a society that is barely scraping by, you want to find a single niche and optimise for it.
I can see what you are saying. I agree with his analysis that woman are chaos. I think it actually compliments your opinion because woman need to be chaotic to be the link to children and reality. Also, our hormone flux’s keep us in perpetual chaos. All of this benefits the family and it takes a well balanced man to handle the chaos and create order from it and keep the mother one foot in reality.
@@rayshaelizabeth8288 Interesting! I have a slightly different take, using the axes of masculine/femine and adult/child, so both man and woman have to mature (create order from chaos). Medusa has snakes for hair because she is the childish feminine, a woman-baby in a place of authority, unwilling to compromise with the masculine and follow rules. The minotaur is her opposite, a man-baby in a place of authority, trapped in a maze of his own unwillingness to compromise with the feminine, instead imposing his own rules on nature. She will keep a man spellbound, but never give him anything, leaving him terrorised for the entire relationship, just like the minotaur terrorises female victims in his maze. In a good relationship, partners turn their weakness inwards toward each other, and their strengths outwards to whatever challenges the relationship. The man turns his strength outward to the world/society and his weakness inward towards the woman, the woman turns her strength inwards to the child and her weakness outward towards the man. Both must become adults and trust each other, help each other overcome their own dragon/chaos, but without putting their own burden on the other, that's a mature relationship.
You do not "own" property in the U.S. you rent it from the Government. They have simply changed the name of the payment from "rent" to "tax". Property tax is one of the most unconstitutional taxes that our Government has imposed, because it negates the ownership of privet property. If you do not pay property tax you are evicted from your property and the Government reclaims it.
Kind of strange analogy. So where is the accountability of the previous generation's choices in this story? Simba lost his father due to the poor choices of how his father handled scar. He barely survived moving forward, and somehow, without any real guidance, is expected to mature and learn how to succeed in life? Well guess what, his friends taught him all they knew, but they weren't his kind. They did what little they could do in place of his parents, but if the parents are absent, then what do people expect? This same crap happens in regards to people getting divorced. Most kids in the US are apart of a divorced family right now... do these people think that works? I am not saying the message of "don 't be a weak man a lazy man" is a bad one. I am saying that he seems to disregard the original problems to begin with. He himself failed with his daughter. She got divorced early and still has issues facing reality on a great many subjects. So from a man who failed his own kid, he avoids the root of his own analogy; the parents failed. The kids suffer.
If modern day men and women actually loved each other and worked together like a team we would have so much potential for great things but because how people are we fight for survival why young men aren't even trying to get with a woman all we can think about now is survival Scary world we live in

He likes to cook and shop and all that and a young woman just married him… a lawyer who makes $400k! She’s 28! He takes care of everything for her. I would like to have seen him work a job, but he has really freed her up. He’ll be a great dad.
I didn’t enjoy this. The Lion King analogy felt weak. Bowing to the more simplistic masses, almost. No need, Jordan. Your earlier fans don’t mind deconstructing the message. We don’t need the Disney.
One of the takeaways with Simba story is that, he is son of the king. Which to some extent reinforces the idea that, to be a king, you need to be born with privileges. This is true in the real life too and can be attributed to the reason why people do not want to take responsibility anymore.

Great counterpoint!
Underrated comment. Timon and Pumba were actually good friends and did the best they could for Simba.

Lion King taught me alot when i was young. Thanks Dr. Peterson for teaching us one of the most important lessons in Life.
Same, avoid hyenas, elephant graveyards, stampedes and scheming uncles at all costs.
"I can fix him" lol
I mean Nala was also Simba's half sister, so there's that as well... Ah disney, teaching important life lessons through incest.
@@elmateo77 It’s a cartoon, they are humanize characters. Scar probably would have killed Nala in reality since dominant male lions kill cubs from previous dominant males. Nala was said to be the daughter of an another male that left the pride.

Your biblical series was reallh solid - you brought Wisdom from the Heart.
Hate is pretty productive too, there's no love without the duality of hate.
7:23 also made me think of West Side Story... All of this is so great, Dr. Peterson is such a gift.

Islam will solve of your problem of if you learn about that.

Peterson fears his feminine nature, the nature that must inevitably consummate him (ego) to transcend him-self 🌞💖👁️
It's interesting to think that one can give a lecture by applying situations in the lion king to situations that happen/happened in real life.
It’s not just natural resources but geography like navigable waterways and coast line. Japan had plenty of coast line and fishing resources.

Be careful of projection...
If modern day men and women actually loved each other and worked together like a team we would have so much potential for great things but because how people are we fight for survival why young men aren't even trying to get with a woman all we can think about now is survival

One of the takeaways with Simba story is that, he is son of the king. Which to some extent reinforces the idea that, to be a king, you need to be born with privileges. This is true in the real life too and can be attributed to the reason why people do not want to take responsibility anymore.
