  • Practical tips on how to integrate your shadow and become more present and powerful in the world, from Canadian psychologist and philosopher Jordan Peterson...
"Men who develop their shadow also develop a kind of peculiar grace that would be a consequence of not only allowing their aggressive side to step forward but also their feminine and compassionate side that they may have kept squelched."
Many thanks to Jordan Peterson for the content - we are running events based on many of the insights of his lectures - see: www.rebelwisdom.co.uk

and dream analysis, for sure. Big chunk of your Shadow is in the Unconscious part of you, so you need to see what your dreams are trying to convey to you. And also - what you fear and avoid - that is also the Shadow. The heroes in movies you love/hate? That's positive/negative Shadow. Study the movie characters you resonate the most with and infer from it what if means for you.

I believe a big part of my shadow is that I am weak in some sense to stand up for myself. I have never really been bullied at school or anything, I've just been a very agreeable person and rarely say no. That's where anger appears, when I feel I naturally say yes to something I don't want to do, (although I attempt to convince myself that it doesn't bother me) but do anyway. Thoughts I didn't think I could think of appear, and strange dark fantasies come and go. To which JP does say, it can feel dangerous and scary that the human mind is capable of such things. During times of self reflection I realize that this is not who I want to be, I have an image in my head of the person I want to become.

I am also infp. I do believe when I was growing up I was very agreeable. For me I had a harder time growing up, because I didn't have much of a grasp at social skills. The agreeableness made it easy for people to want to be around me. And a couple of shared traits were normally the only reason I was around somebody. Also, had really bad anger issues.

a good clip. I think Peterson is great for raising awareness of Jung's wisdom. I recently read archetypal dimensions of the psyche which is quite a heavy read but goes more into the integration of the shadow. Would be interested to hear Peterson's thoughts on integration of the anima / animus which Jung thought was the greatest challenge.

If you are an axe murderer and you choose never to have a weapon again in your hands, well that could be a moral decision to not repeat your past. People are relativist when it comes to morality. You make decisions to act morally in some situations but may not in others. Morality can be relative. Killing one person to save hundreds is a philosophical dilemma. You could be a bad person (axe murderer) and repent and do only good deeds in the future. Surely you may become a relativist and argue you once were a bad person and then became a good person ?

Sounds like the hyper-agreeable Covert Narcissist. The shadow side doesn't become realized. The behaviours then spew/seep out in passive aggression/gaslighting/blame-shifting/crazy-making...peppered with the proverbial "I never did that" or "I didn't say that"...etc. And empath or receptor of these behaviours of becomes "reactive" and acts out the shadow of the other person, becomes lost themselves. So:
“Beware that, when fighting monsters, you yourself do not become a monster..." For those who are afraid of what may lie beneath their own agreeable exterior...take solace that, perhaps as with the Narcissist: The very act of worry that you are a narcissist is likely to preclude consideration of being one. So perhaps the very fear of harbouring a monster eradicates the likelihood to a large degree... And consider Cherry Plum for certain dark thoughts (a Bach Flower remedy...not sponsored!! ::)

    • @koul3709
      @koul3709 4 года назад

I don't think there is a handbook for this. Learning and wrestling with the shadow is about experience. You have to live through trial and error, back and forth, pause and repeat. It's more about learning the balance between needed self-expression of resentments, and letting them go in equal measure. That's why all of these metaphysical concepts are like art. People are looking for "rules and instructions," but it's more of an ongoing battle within yourself, that will hopefully one day result in a synthesis of forces within and a streamlining of your life. The way and "formula" is unique to each person, and they have to come by it themselves.

What the fuck the problem started when you integrate a persona.
The reason why people struggle in this world is because thier hands are tied by law and they are in a game of life where the rules are made up but are not taught.
The persona is the mask the thing that covers the shadow.
      Especially in men.
      You deny your feminine side.
The mask is portraying persona when the typically beta as you put it puts it on he becomes a ridiculous creature.
That's what it's telling everyone the people who are like that are fake and inside are weak that's why they need the mask.
      Get it right.
      Theres no alphas and betas.
Your conditioned by your culture to compete against each other to give rise to your biochemistry that you become addicted to so carry on the shadow is you the point you view it from thats false persona and an actor that you believe you are.

Shadow parts of the self that the persona rejects. Observe one s own fantasies of resentment or revenge. Notice if you are oppressed and your moral obligation is to speak up about it. Honesty with yourself is like good therapy. The journey to enlightenment begins with recognition of one’s capacity for evil. If those aggressive parts are integrated into one’s character one can be dangerous and that actually is good. You can develop grace. Speaking truth assertively is necessary.

In simple terms I would say we need a willingness to look at ourselves, to inquire into what we are both on the surface of our personality, as well as in the depths (however we can) and then to engage life from here. We bring more facets of ourselves to the table.
Integration happens naturally. It comes through engaging both our inner and outer lives.

What I have found interesting about the shadow is that it is not the act of standing up for yourself that empowers you. It's the ability to stand with others in a way that fulfils you which matters. Like Jordan says, if you narrow down the resentment, that is when the shadow provides positive solutions. It is when you don't know what bothers you which the shadow creates selfish power hungry fantasies. Integration is the key to navigate through the darkness of your mind.

Think about this: the people you got the organs from. It was their turn to go. Your turn to go will also come one day. They would have left anyway. They did not die so you could get the organs. The Hopi tribe (and others) believe that if you save a mans life you are responsible for him thereafter. Not the other way round.
The universe is a strange place Mason. You need to open your mind to see how it really works. You have the time to do it, just remember you gave your donor the greatest gift of all- when you were an infant for god’s sake. There may be even more greatness in you.

I am certainly glad that as societies we are finally open to get to know concepts like the shadow. We need to get out of the self-righteous mode that does not allow us to observe those aspects that need further development. For example, I am Mexican, upper class Mexican. We have gigantic Walls around our houses in Mexico City and other cities, with barbed wire and electricity so criminals do not dare to do their shananings. So what aspect of my shadow I am embracing, that I am racist and classist. I cannot understand how the rest of Mexico feels so offended that Trump is building a wall, when we ourselves are racist against fellow mexicans. No wonder the constellation of the collective has created a Wall, because we All have Walls in mexico, cultural walls, ethnic walls, economical walls. I am well aware that I have lots to develop in that department, but I would not be able to do inquiry into what is wrong with me, and my racists and classist tendencies if i was in denial, that is if i had a persona, that I am a nice and all accepting Mexican. That is the persona that my fellow upper class mexicans use, but our shadow is that we call ourselves mexicans if and only if we are with people of the same socio-economical class. this is just one example, of how deluded we all are, not only in mexico but pretty much everywhere. As Eckart Tolle has mentioned in his books, we are all insane, it is just that we have not become ware that we are insane.

JD - You live in "the Americas" - therefore you are an "American"
Slip into that suit of clothes for awhile! I am a born bred U.S. Citizen. I came to an awareness back in the 90eez. There is no country called "America". Face this reality individually and collectively, and the entire narrative of history changes and the lies rapidly are illuminated and exposed. Speech has been muddled and the discussion polluted, by the complete mis use of the words "America" and
"American" . I am a U.S. Citizen, and only because I live in a region of the "Americas", does that fact therefore make me an "American".
North America, Central America, South America!. All the inhabitants are "Americans"! People have been systematically and perpetually dumbed down! Had my country been properly named, it should have been called
"The United States of THE Americas". If Donald Trump had his head screwed on straight he might be crying out to " make the Americas great again".
What he should properly be saying is, of course, "make the United States great again". Start revealing in public speech to Mexicans, that they too are "Americans", and that action would stimulate all new awareness. Reveal to Canadians, that they are actually "Americans" , and the conversation must change". The ignorant discussion for at least 100 years, has deluded the Citizens of the United States, into thinking "they" are the only "Americans"! Fascinating that such a delusion has persisted, for so long! If we used our words properly, well, I think the human condition in the "Americas", would look differently.

In a way it’s “classist” or “racist”, but not really, you are just realistic. True racism or classism is when you would readily dismiss someone on the basis of race or class alone, without considering them on their own individual merits. That’s true racism or classism. Simply being aware that there are many poor and violent Mexicans out in your streets that you need to guard against, that’s not racism or classism. And if that is, well then good luck when you “improve” those ”qualities” in yourself... you might end up dead lol

2:12 I think he's referring to this quote...
“Of all evil I deem you capable: Therefore I want good from you. Verily, I have often laughed at the weaklings who thought themselves good because they had no claws.”
For me, hearing that for the first time was almost like a weight got lifted off my shoulders. I had always noticed that distinction, but couldn't effectively communicate it. Basically, anytime you find out you aren't the only one who notices something, it's comforting.

It's basically a reminder that we ALL have claws (the capability to be bad people), and that true mental fortitude comes from those who know the feeling of using their claws, yet make the conscious decision not to.
-You can also interpret this as "a strong man who has never faced adversity, might not actually be as strong as he thinks." Essentially the same thing, just more broad.

I am currently in psychodynamic therapy (through a specialist service for people with personality disorders - myself having borderline PD). I’m in the process of shedding my persona and accepting/incorporating my shadow into my character. All my life I have been refusing to accept that I am capable of the negative - to the point that I completely separated any negative thought/feeling/action to that of a separate entity which had a name and a voice (a delusion and auditory hallucination). I believed I was incapable of being ‘bad’, now I see that it was juvenile and naive. I am getting to know myself for the first time. I’m unlocking my potential. It feels like I’m waking up for the first time. I feel more powerful as the weeks go by. Now, these fantasies are a part of your deep self, which is trying to communicate with you through out this images. That's ok, it's how our unconscious communicate, through out symbols, inner images. This doesn't mean you have to transform that into action, but simply let it flow through your mind, acknowledge them and than find a way to express the build up emotional energy. If you accept them, and understand that it's just some deep ancient energy inside yourself that is communicating with you, you will be able to integrate your shadow. Being harmless is not any moral virtue, nor has it ever been so. Being capable of being a Monter of destruction and rationally and reasonablyen refrain from doing so most certainty is. A great moral virtue. Integrity is doing the right thing when no one is looking, when no one cares, when you can get away with it. Men like Schlinder and others like him are the moral and spiritual examples to follow. That path can be dangerous .

I don't like Peterson's advice much these days bc he mixes his political beliefs in with them. However, he does explain the concept of the Shadow very well here. Essentially, your shadow is your emotional blind, spot; and unresolved version of your personality that does not match how you feel about your ideal self (ego). An individual is somewhat, innately aware of that dark spot and we'll either confront it or hide it. Even from themselves. It often gets manifested through projection, that is, blaming others for your shortcomings and negative maladaptive behaviors. From personal experience confronting the shadow and working through it is a life-altering experience that allows you to be free of self-recrimination and live authentically. So few achieve this these days and the world would be better if more could.

It was the same with me. I took same psychoanalytic seanses last year and realesed my anger, anxiety which had been kept since my early childhood. I think you had better find a good psychoanalyst who knows reichan, jungian psychology well. Now I rarely act like a child and my family also have started to see me as a mature person.

This is heavy stuff, but nonetheless I am feeling ever more ready to start because of how tired I am of being in the place I am in life. If the only way out is to walk through hell while harnessing its energy for genuine good; I am all for it. I want to be good for the sake of being good, not just to please others, because I feel like right now the only "good" in my life is that disingenuous type where I lie to myself and others to meet some sort of end - and that's not a great place to be in at all. Damned if I really know myself all that much either. I guess to put it simply I want to achieve that "gracefulness" he spoke of while also being a dangerous person if someone were to mess with me or my loved-ones.
I understood the first step of contemplating resentment and noticing what it says, because I have lived these moments countless times in the last year alone. Feelings of rage when seeing a happy couple or group of friends are quite common. However, the thing I am struggling with in this video is when Dr. Peterson said that the resentment is something you have to say. I don't understand how to go about that, exactly. If I speak up to somebody, (my parents and siblings are sadly the only people in my life, really), about how I want to drive my car into a group of loud mates enjoying each other's company at an outdoor venue or how I want to take a flamethrower to a happy couple holding hands while walking down the street; at best I will get shamed immediately and at worst I will be sent to a psyche ward. It does not help either that it's possibly their parenting style that caused a lot of these setbacks in the first place. For people who have done this and emerged on the other side a genuinely better person: how did you go about it? Is it best to read the works of Jung directly, or is it best to seek therapy? Or both? The closest Jungian therapist to my location is a one hour drive, and I heard their rates can be pricier compared to basic CBT, which I have never tried either. Is CBT a good starting point or is it best to just skip entirely?

@@Fanny.Cradock There is a lot of controversy around Peterson--I don't need to tell you that. He says many things that can be construed as misogynist or racist, or, to put it the other way, as patriarchal and white supremacist. I am not damning every word he says. I am saying that despite his Jungian credentials he seems naive about his own 'shadow', as it is called in the field. No, I can't give you any examples now--it has been some time since I've read or listened to JP and i don't have the examples to hand. But if you are curious about people's reservations, you can find plenty of articulate criticism out there I am sure. Not all the critics are over-the-top PC brigadiers. I don't believe I am, or at least I get myself into trouble with the PC brigade a lot.... Anyway--I'm watching this video again: persona in Jung isn't just being nice. JP is wrong here. Machos just have a different persona to the beta males. Still some good stuff here.

In the Aramaic Hebrew it means something like a powerful beast like a horse,
that can be destructive and yet obeys his master. that does fit as being meek.
I believe Jordan Peterson uses it quite well.
This is also one of the gifts of the Ruach sighted in scripture.
Scriptures also mentions being a protector of those that need it.
This is an example of when the meek shows strength.

A simpler way to do this is to realize you are a fucking animal and you have animalistic tendencies. The "shadow" parts of you need unconditional love because they are you. Figure out what they want and see if you can give it to them.
I've found through psychedelic use that if I try to satisfy everyone else before myself (seems virtuous right?), I am repressing my own satisfaction and I harbor violent resentment deep down. Better to be "selfish" now than to end up violent down the road.
The repressed parts will force themselves out if you don't let them out.

There seems to be a lotta advice on the importance of 'Why' we need to integrate our Shadow, and noticing our 'resentments' sounds like a great start. Yet there's still plenty of 'Shadow-stuff' besides that, and none ever seem to speak as much to the 'How'.

    • @Mirandorl
      @Mirandorl 4 года назад +2

Agreed. I think shadow working is a very underdeveloped area and though a number of authors wrote of its importance, none really created a full system of psychotherapy around how exactly to deal with it. Perhaps it was something a therapist might intuitively work with a person on. However there is definitely no useful self help guide to steer you through the inevitable explosions and damage that choosing to just suddenly begin expressing your dark side, without the very finesse you came to therapy to acquire, will lead to.

Is it enough to just recognize the resentment and negativity within? I am a MBTI type INTJ and I have had a lifetime of introspection. I truly know that I am capable of the worst actions and also capable of the best actions. I choose to be moral, responsible and exhibit the fruits of the spirit. That doesn't deny the darkness within, but I choose to be a 'good' person. This stance allows me to grasp the evil in people such as criminals, but not be tempted by it or interested in it. It's a objective view of all people, the bad and the good.
