For someone who refuses to admit solid belief in God, he understands aspects of biblical history better than many Christians who eagerly claim belief in God.
Thsts his point. Stop trying to define me by your definition of belief battle camps.
İ believe what i believe and dont believe what i dont believe. İf thats not good enough for you, too bad.
He already believe that God exist. He even prayed in his channel.
Listening to him has actually strengthened my faith. He’s shed so much light on the value of the scriptures from a different perspective.

He also knows a lot about Egyptian mythology without worshiping their gods.
When you lift heavy things, you become stronger. Same goes with fear. When you face it, over come, you come out on other side stronger. And when one face fear more and more, they become stronger and stronger.
Absolutely rubbish:: the feeling of fear you cannot control it and it can translate into emotions that could save your life or not and might even kill you.
@@zahariachirica5466 you can. I can. Dont know about you. But if one is present in moment when fear is entering sceene and can control fight-flight motion, then one can stand up and face fear. And count in that fear can be big, like in life treatening situations and small, mundaine, like talking to boss or trying to drive a car/fly an aircraft/jump out of plane with parachute for first time.
@@AverageLatvianDude As there are many fears and all are irrational and all are rooted in fear of death how can voluntarily a brain control them? The feeling of fear of any kind as Antonio Damasio is explaining to us is generated by the inner workings of the body cells and cellular structures such as heart , stomach, liver etc.... The outside world also generate the feeling of a lot of fears our multicellular body has no control of. Its all about luck. If you are a happy multicellular organism that developed an healthy limbic system that keeps all feeling and emotions in an optimum state that that's fine. If not then we invented all sort of religions ,stories and drugs to cope with them ....
@@zahariachirica5466 when you are facing fear of any kind, you have 2 options - fight or run. It is as simple as that. And you can control what you chose. In war or any life treatening situation, if one stands up, fights - he overcomed fear of death and in other situations he will "fight on" ...
@@AverageLatvianDude 'when you are facing fear of any kind, you have 2 options - fight or run. It is as simple as that'..Really? Is that simple? Think more about it....In your organization, for instance, your boss is treating you badly and you cannot fight against him for fear of loosing your job and so will loose respect of your wife and your hungry children at home if choose to run from your tyrannical boss. You are in a phycological trap you feel you cannot escape....Many men in such situation commit suicide.. And if you are in situation where the food is hard to get how you voluntarily control your feeling of being hungry? Or thirsty? Or even being horny....a horrible feeling that boys in many circumstances are afraid of? I know it by my own experience. Some of the time our brain voluntarily control our emotions but not at all all the time. I repeat: it is all about luck. We need stories that give us the illusion that we are in control of our life, emotions and world around us.....stories that are creating a safe space to live as a less stressful life as possible.
I’m going to face a fear today and this week. It never gets easier, it never gets less scary, but I’m hoping to get braver as a result and find out more about my own strengths and capabilities.
Godspeed
Good luck friend, whatever it is
Good luck
Awesome! I genuinely hope you succeed.
Good luck, my friend.
“I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past, I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone, there will be nothing. Only I will remain.” -Frank Herbert
Apropos
The feeling fear is important for our survival. As with anything else is about the right amount: too much is not good as is the absence of it. Fear is life saving. Some Christian churches wants you to live in fear of God, fear of hell, fear of Satan etc....That could be a healthy fear in order to save your soul and possibly the priest 's gorgeous living style😅
Danger is real, and needs to be acknowledged per the situation.
Fear is a mental construct about some event or scenario that may never happen. Fear paralyzes cognitive function and actions. Thus the litany clears the space to allow cognitive function and action nominally.....
In my opinion.....
@@firehorse_44alpha-omega well fishnchips_44 I agree
@@zahariachirica5466 All our feelings are important. There's no such thing as a bad emotion, just bad reactions to our emotions
I have a severe social anxiety and had it for over 10 years. Even doing small things like going to the grocery store feels literally death threatening even though I know I will be safe. It's like as if there was a new kind of pain - social pain and I feel that everywhere I know I can be or I feel there's a chance I can be seen by people. Facing my fears have made it easier for me, more so because of how I believe in myself more now and have more confidence than feeling how these social interactions are less scary now. Some interactions still feel death threatening, but I feel I can withstand a lot more of it.
I'm proud for you, Sir.
I am also proud of you, keep up the good work
I feel the exact same way when I have to get my blood drawn. It is better today, as I have done it so many times. But the one time I donated blood, I felt so unbelievably weak for about 2 full days. Perhaps it was too early, but it only strengthened my fear of bleeding out. In fact, when I deployed to Iraq, I had ordered two Israeli bandages just in case. Never needed them thank God.
Do you have close friends and family?
Just a little bit at a time, I pray you keep on progressing
Absolutely brilliant break down of the story of Exodus. It is pretty ridiculous that a psychologist with no stated religious affiliation gives the absolute best interpretation of scripture I’ve ever heard while virtually every priest I’ve listened to in mass barely cracks the surface. For example, the Catholic church wonders why people aren’t flocking to it…Here’s the solution: dig deeper. People are seeking a proper understanding of all this. Don’t make the faith simple, cookie cutter, and mainstream so that more people join. The exact opposite is what will draw people to Christ.
Be fierce against the storms coming your way. Courage comes with rewards.
I decided to challenge my fears after killing a garter snake as a kindergartner: I understood at that point that I killed an innocent creature because of fear, and realized that whatever I feared had some kind of control over me.
This is powerful
You were a profound 5 year old.
That is a brilliant point.
!
interesting conclusion to draw. The snake would never think twice about killing you, but then thats one of the things that separates us from snakes I suppose
It has recently dawned on me that I have a fear of death. Not my own but my loved ones around me. The idea of suffering without them close to me. Not telling them everything I needed to. Having faith shows me that death on this plain of existence is not absolute. Life is but a vapor in eternity and through my beliefs in an afterlife I can learn to fight through the pains of life. A friend told me once to not be sad about my mothers death for she just changed addresses and I’ll catch up with her one day. It took me 10 years to figure out such a simple concept. So I will meditate on this and champion my fears. F.E.A.R.: False Evidence Appearing Real. I thought this was clever. God bless you all.
I could give this man the biggest hug! Not only does he have the ability to explain things so succinctly, he allows people to have epiphany moments about things that he is not necessarily speaking of directly. The parallel between the Exodus serpent on the staff and exposure to a source of terror being what leads to healing.. like woah! For me one of the ways of alleviating social anxiety was to not only be around others but to put the focus (conversation etc) on them and being 'exposed' to their world/life/perspective.
I think there is a deeper meaning behind the serpent-snake... it possibly parallels to Jesus being lifted up on cross for the sins of each one of us (healing/salvation), but this teaching is so appreciated 🙌
You're really cute
It's not a possibility. IT IS Jesus on the cross.
Why were you afraid to say so without reservations?
@@JohnSmith-nz2yq cos i wasn't 100% sure that it was exactly. I mean it definitely has tonnes of parralels and is a picture of what is to come. But it uses a snake which was a sign of evil.. so as i was writing i got a bit confused so wrote possibly. That is all :)
I had the epiphany that as He used the exposure to the serpent to heal the Israelites of their serpent wounds, He saved us from death through death (both His death on the cross, and calling us to follow Him in dying to ourselves).
@@user-vv5ju3fj1p yes so good! And omgosh just had a realization that the serpent on tbe pole represents sin!! Which Jesus took on the sin of the world and nailed it to the cross. So wow, the serpent on the pole is really an exact parallel. God dropping the hints. Love Him 🙌
He doesn’t quite make that life-changing faith leap regarding The Passion. I pray one day he will. He’s a brilliant mind and feels deeply.
12 years of private Catholic school and I had never had these explained like this. I'm not condemning the school - it speaks to how insanely new the way JP breaks down these stories is. He understands it better than Christians have for centuries due to his unique background.
I think that Christianity has produced plenty of books and treatises on a plethora of different subjects, but it is us who do not have the time or the will to go and search for them. At the same time, I blame Sunday school for the loss of interest in Catholicism by the younger generations: unfortunately, things there are not explained very profoundly.
This reframes the idea of grace as “the gift of God” to confront our worst fears and escape our self-made hells. As one who was raised in faith but who drifted towards science-inspired agnosticism, this seems to make a lot of sense to me. There must be a lot of hard won lessons of human nature and psychology in these old stories. It’s a shame that so much wisdom has been locked away right in front of us, abstracted by tradition or dogma. I wonder what other truths are lurking within the parables and allegories. I look forward to more in this Biblical series.
Grace has never been (properly understood) merely external (a Protestant concept) but a participation in God's own divine life where your mind is illuminated and will is strengthened. In other words, God tells you what to do and gives the strength to live it out... The choice then is ours to say yes.
“From tyranny to the desert”. This is true, are we going to choose to remain back in Egypt with what we are used to, or move forward to a new land through the struggle?
The leadership wasn’t the problem, the people were stuck in bad thinking patterns. This was totally new to themX this adventure. They were used to being suppressed. Freedom was new to them.
Yes, they complained the whole dang time, so of course they aren’t going to move forward very quickly.
Hitting rock bottom and looking at the devil in the eye brought me to this man, and this man brought me back to the Christian faith. From a different perspective of 46 years of experience. Everything makes sense now. God bless you Dr JBP.
I find it so inspiring to listen Jordan Peterson interpreting the bible.
So the Hebrews left Egypt and found themselves in the desert. They left the order of slavery and stepped into the desert. For me, the desert symbolizes the chaos, the unknown. They step from chaos into order, because they believe in reaching the promised land. This metaphor so much relates to most people's personal life. It also explains the journey of the hero archetype. First, the hero is in a situation he wants to escape. The hero leaves all security behind, the known, the order and steps into the unknown. He has the courage, because he believes that he can reach the promised land. On the way, he encounters threats and dangers, symbolized by the snakes. Finally, the hero reaches the promised land, Israel. From order to chaos to order.
Or as psychologist Carl Jung puts it:
"No tree, it is said, can grow to heaven unless its roots reach down to hell."
Thank you very much, Mr. Peterson.
Seeing Dr Peterson grow out this grey beard fills me with a kind of joy I can't describe. I'm so grateful for this man.
JP always manages to make sense, from a psychological POV, everything in the Holy Bible. Just like he does with everything else. He is truly God's gift to us. A teacher!
His biblical series is extremely interesting and intellectual, he is a blessing to the world!
Great work on this one, Jordan! 😀 Keep up the great research on these difficult subjects. 😀
After 10 years in an abusive relationship, I am in the desert! Often my mind will crave that relationship because the isolation of the desert can be very rough indeed, but I have to remind myself that I am at least safe! It’s funny because honestly, I don’t know which is worse, the tyranny or the desert!
Sending much love your way.

Stay the course it will be worth it. When you make it, you will have a hard time believing you did it any other way. Beware of the charmers. I care.
the desert is better because your closer to the promise land. But you’ll only get there through facing your fears more
Absolutely brilliant and inspiring...this reframing of facing fear can help us move beyond thoughts of destruction or terror. It evokes a touch more bravery in dealing with whatever form our fears take...incredible and a timely viewing for me! Thank you 🙏🏼
This man is a wonderful man. He inspires me.
Randall Carlson bringing this story up in the past really opened up my perspective to a lot of things. Always love to hear the insights on this stuff.
I grew up learning about these story and have never thought about them from the perspective he gave, this was really interesting, and definitely increased my faith in the Bible
Exactly 💯
I couldn’t resist hearing your perspective from a Psychological standpoint. I was happy to hear you were familiar with the scripture that interpreted the symbolism of the snake being on the pole - which in fact is Christ. An interesting thing I think you might find interesting if you haven’t already figured it out, is that biblically speaking the opposite of Love is not hate, but fear. Jesus came to rescue us from fear and death. What is missing in churches is the fact that the true gospel has been twisted and not preserved. Religion is not enough. When you read Proverbs and Ecclesiastes and the wisdom books in the Pentateuch at the end of the story as the preacher said “life is meaningless“. The moral of the story of those books is that we need more than wisdom in this life. Also what you do not hear is that Christ embodies life. He is the bread, the manna that was given in the desert. The difference between religion and Christ is that religion does not bring life. Sure - it can make life better but it cannot give life. What we are talking about here is an actual spiritual conversion that takes place inside of a person. As was prophesied by Ezekiel , when we put our faith in Christ he takes our old heart of stone and gives us a new heart of flesh. We have actually become a new creature, a real spiritual exchange has taken place. This is what the encounter was about when Nicodemus approached Jesus at which point Jesus explained to him about a “new birth”. This is the power of the resurrection life. We actually become new people, having the spirit of God live inside of us which gives us power to overcome. It’s not that we no longer struggle with Temptations, but what we find is that we are no longer compatible with them. So our desires actually change. God is now our Father who loves and cares for us, we have become co - heirs with Christ. We learn the difference between the spirit and the “flesh “ and as we grow and mature (just as a baby does) we learn to walk not according the the “flesh” which is the world’s kingdom or system, so to speak, but we walk according to the Spirit which is the kingdom of God. And we have the presence of Christ’s spirit actually living inside of us with the promise that he will never , no never leave us no matter what, if we put our trust in him and are willing to exchange our life for his. It is an exchanged life. Only then can we live. That is the beautiful truth of the Gospel. The day I did that was the day I received Life! Very little matters apart from that in comparison.
Yes yes yes ! Perfect simple explanation

Another set of wonderful insights from Jordan P. Getting upset over the belief, or denial of belief in god, is purely academic, when both humanity and divinity are experienced, via an honest and forthright man. I think Mr Peterson is one such man.
From the shear depth of his knowledge. One can only estimate the thought and intellect he has dedicated to discovering interpretations and his theories.
His critical thinking is on another level!

“Exposure Therapy” is something I’ve been talking about for years of my own experiences, though it was only in the last few months I’ve also now started calling it “rehearsals”.
This is already discussed in the Quran in the end of Surah Baqarah that every soul will not be burdened more than it can bear :)
The Bible predates the Quoran and says this too. In fact he is referring to the Jewish text of Moses and Moses puts the serpent on a pole and people need to gaze and live. Very Messianic. Jesus Christ is the Messiah.
To hear this man is just a pure and like massage for my brain.
🙏 thank you
I couldn’t imagine how difficult it must be for Jordan P to do the mundane day to day tasks. Getting gas, grocery, shopping, shaving. It must taken an immense amount mental fortitude for this man to get through the day. These discussions must bring him such relief I bet I’m sure that’s why he does them. To get some reprieve from the difficult of daily life.

Love the contribution of the monk
This man is so god damn thought provoking i can hardly stand it
Prof, today you've been my Northern Star 🥰💞🌟
The last sentences were the most interesting.
An astonishing analogy between the bronze serpent and the "Son of Man". If, by gazing on the bronze serpent the snake may still bite you but can no longer kill you, then by gazing on the cross (spiritually speaking) the ultimate serpent (Satan) no longer has the power to kill you either. Jesus has conquered death for you and therefore by directing your gaze to Him when the serpent strikes it no longer has the same power. And so, with Paul we can say" Oh Death, where is thy sting?".
Excellent point. It is truly incredible how interconnected the entire Bible is. Not to mention, Jesus’ teachings ring true through every generation.
I have faced mine, and I now know where I'm going. ❤❤🙏🙏peace.
The staff lifted up and looked upon is a foreshadow of the cross.
Amen. Yes. The cross is either the antedote or the poison. Very deep and kinda scary. The fear of God.
"You go and rescue your father from the belly of the beast, and then get resurrected"
Like in Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, where he rescues his dad from the tank and everyone thinks he's dead when the tank crashes off the cliff, but he climbs back up again?
Sometimes when I've got some more energy I might dig into that a little more.
Dr. Jordan Patterson has probably helped more people come to faith then he even realizes because He’s genuinely curious. and out of respect for his curiosity he has a whole show called “the daily wire” speaking on biblical topics. With guests who have the biblical academics. I dunno , I like having perspectives from all sides and really do my own scholar work too. What he’s doing here just motivated probably a hand full up folks to randomly check out the scriptures to further learn the Moses stories and that’s good enough for me and hopefully it glorifies our father a little more.
Thank you.
Putting it together and presenting it like this was very helpful :7♡
Jordan looking good.
Slavery is preferable for most people. Dealing with the uncertainty of my own responsibility for myself is terrifying. So most of us live our lives wandering aimlessly in the desert and never stepping into the Promised Land.

Very interesting presentation. I used to read philosophy, then switched to psychology because I wondered what made philosophers think the way they did and as part of psychology realised the role played by language in actually creating apparent problems rather than ‘solving’ them. The subject of quantum mechanics is perhaps analogous to what is raised here in that you can take an entity which seems simple on the surface but when you analyse it then analyse the analysis and so on you get an entirely different perspective on what the entity is and realise there are no answers, only more questions.
Know the others and nothing will break your heart,..
No fear no worries 😅❤❤

Given time is unstoppable, I think a more accurate statement should be "You were what you were."
To face my fear is to face God. I can see why that would be good
There is so many profound stories of the Bible that are just far to complex and far to relative to ever be passed on as just some owners manual for humans to be moral during life it’s just to profound. My faith isn’t the strongest I’ll admit that I have seen and dealt with alot of things that challenge that. But stories such as this when someone as prolific as jordan can lay it out it’s truly amazing. It’s actually truly amazing
Professor Peterson, you should write your own commented version of the bible. That would be really enlightening! Thank you for the fascinating interpretation and explanation🙏
That could take years but it would be a best seller no doubt
I'm not only not going to, whatever survives what's to come can contend with it then.
i choose not to live on fear but in faith that God has a plan for my life and that is why i exist as a human .
dont let the fears of others be projected onto you cos in the end it is what you have that you give to others. Remember bullies are always afraid and that is why they choose to act though to hode their fears .

The wisest man of all time
I think part of what the resurrection is that we should try to not only resurrect the memory of our fathers and mothers. Rather that we should resurrect them by taking the very best and the truly good parts of them and bringing it back to the world. This would allow the hate of the previous generation to be lost but the wisdom they learned to continue on in the hearts of man.
What a mighty beard he had!

There is no rule that requires facing your fears, must be done alone. The nice thing about Christianity, is that you are not alone, but a constant presence of the Holy Spirit abides in you. Also, why do we have spouses and friends? Are they not to be there in both joy and misery, success and failure, peace and fear? Too often people lean on strangers with a degree, than a loved one with a kind touch. There are those who need professional help, but most of us, just need a friend's compassion.
I like the idea that "there's no getting rid of the snakes". Always made me wonder why there was even a snake in the garden.
Hi Sir Jordan Peterson ,you are a great speaker, word artist om the highest level ,sounds like poetry when Sir Jordan speaks . But one problem, you speak to fast, you can do that but it will give you much stress afterwards . Take breaks and speak little slower , that will be of great benefit for you . After some time you will feel less stress . And on Podcasts people talk to fast , that is harder for the lungs , they can do that but it gives allot negative stress .
I wish Sir Jordan the best September that will come , and that you can give so great speeches and lectures.
Sincerely Abel Zorin
So you are going through Exodus in this story. After chapter 14 in my book they come out from the Egyptians. Then rather than they being met with poisonous snakes to bite them in response to their complaining they were actually given mana from heaven. This offered a new high reward but it was only accessible when you followed God's statutes and made all decisions rightly! This is the first of the same such example as what you are focusing on in the snakes. Because either is good and deep and filled with meaning! "So shall the son of man be lifted up"
.".fear...Snakes in hearts of enemies and snakes in your heart ."................... Followed shortly there after ...the fear of the "ultimate reality" of having survived the fear ....the unanswered is surviving the fear ...
Omg that’s me in the desert indefinitely. Of course he has to keep pushing by sending snakes to bite us, that’s the only way I move, when it’s imperative. Tbf I had noticed the pattern. Pretty much the same for everybody else. 😑
Oh that is deep, "no matter how deep yhe pit of hell is you can do something to make it worse" 🤔
