  • @jefflogan334
    @jefflogan334 Год назад +7

    Great video. I tried all these amps as a pedal platform for my Helix to get some stage / gig volume over using just FRFR or PA /monitor solutions. I went with the Catalyst and really happy with it. The Boutique on the Catalyst gives a great clean to edge of breakup tone and a good foundation for the Helix. That amp model is also very similar to the Helix Litigator which I use as a top 3 amp anyway so it felt familiar and new at the same time. The Tone Master at gig volume with a full band actually felt like it got a little lost in the mix but that is likely user/EQ error and also my preconception and history playing a tube Deluxe so that was an unfair judgement to put on it however they are similar in $ so they kind of put themselves in that space. It is definitely the most similar to a tube amp than any of these options and the most transparent in that comparison. I tried both the Boss and the L6 as a pure power amp and both were similar in terms of SPL, etc. The Boss also felt a little boxed in over the Catalyst. In a band situation with the Catalyst I have my own space carved out with plenty of headroom, a little bass-low that I have to Eq but manageable. Lastly the Catalyst direct out with a 2X12 cab and SM57 or a 121 Ribbon sounds great and is an easy patch path for a DI/snake . I wish there was some tweaking I could do with the DI or even turn off cab modeling so I could just use my Helix but I got around it fine. The Orange is definitely mid heavy and really powerful. Felt great but a lot more $, a great pedal platform but had its sound either you like or don't. It's not as versatile as the other options but like the Tonemaster, had a very traditional and easily tweaked interface.

    • @24avenged24
      @24avenged24 Год назад

      To record without the built in cabs I just run the fx out into my interface, the only downside is you also lose the built in effect and reverb as well as the cab. Then I just send a completely unaffected single back to the return if I want to also monitor through the amp.
      I don't have a helix so I'm not sure about the IO or signal routing options but I'd assume at least the full size ones would be capable of splitting the signal like that, so you'd have a cab and reverb/fx on the helix di and then a parallel signal with nothing to return to the catalyst if you wanted. I agree it would be nice to be able to just have the option to turn them off though.

    If I had to buy one on the spot if get the Orange since I prefer e the fact that it's solid state, the fact that it's extremely simple without loads of amp models and effect, and for the general high gain metal sound that I like. I was really impressed with the Catalyst and the tone master (both amps i didn't really know or hear before) and with the gtx, which I already knew was a good amp.

    To your point about wanting to try the Orange with a pedalboard, the power amp in the SC100 is the Orange Pedal Baby. So the least versatile amp can potentially be one of the most versatile, if you're willing to add a little more gear.

    The Katana is a 5 channel solid state amp, but it digitally models pedals and effects.

    • @dadtimejamtime
      @dadtimejamtime  Год назад +2

      Thank you - sometimes you read something and makes everything come into focus! Katana is a solid state, modeling amp - meaning it emulates multiple sounds but it does it a with “tube logic” analog circuitry. I conflated modeling & digital together but really the categories should be either:
      - Digtal vs solid state (in which katana should go in the solid state bucket)
      - Modeling vs Single amp (in which katana would be in modeling and maybe tone master should be in the single amp category!)
      Fascinating. Nothing like learning on the job. Thanks for letting me know (and not flaming me for the mess up)!

    • @polarkgr1
      @polarkgr1 Год назад +1

      @@dadtimejamtime Modeling vs single amp is mis leading. Modeling Amps can model 1 amp (like the Tone Master series) or they can model multiple different amps (Catalyst and GTX), in analog amps (tube and solid state), where the amp can have either 1 or multiple preamp circuits (referred to as channels).
      Most commonly will be a 2 channel amp with a clean channel and a dirty or overdriven channel, in the case of the Katana it is 5 channels (acoustic, clean, crunch, lead and brown) and each of those channels actually have 2 different voicings (tonal variations of the channel circuitry) of each of those channels.
      I know this will be confusing to many people as it sounds like and acts like the same thing, especially if you directly compare the Catalyst to the Katana, as you use a know to switch between channels( or amp models on digital amps), the difference is the parts between the knob and the speaker, the Modeling amps essentially use a computer to simulate the circuitry, where as the analog amp is an actual circuit. Think of it like the difference between a EV and a gas engine car, you still have a steering wheel and pedals and wheels and tires on the other end, but the bits in between that make it go work on two different technologies.

    • @dadtimejamtime
      @dadtimejamtime  Год назад

      @@polarkgr1 I hear what you’re saying re: modeling vs multiple preamp circuits. Makes sense - a few google searches and you can see the confusion! BOSS refers to them as amp characters, sweet water calls them amp models, voicings and characters at different points in their listing. People say analog modeling has been around since the 70s etc. but I agree direct comparison with digital modelers really makes it easy to mistake the katana for being digital not analog (and the fact that you can hack it with the sneaky amps hack and get up to 28 different ‘characters’) which is the most important point - it’s all analog (except for the effects). And if you google ‘boss katana channels’ the first snippet says “…katana has 5 channels (models) on a single turn control…) LOL
      Lots of jargon here, but i was definitely wrong in thinking the different characters were digital. I really appreciate the comments, thank you for sharing!

    Not using the Katana Tone Studio to create the settings on a Katana is really short changing the amp and definately makes your review a little less relevant. The Tone Studio is an important feature. Saying that it was "hard to find the tone that I wanted" when you didn't even try to use one of amps greatest features devalues the review. Still, thanks for the review. I know it isn't easy to put a video like this together and I look forward to more of your videos. Keep it up.

    • @dadtimejamtime
      @dadtimejamtime  Год назад +4

      Yah I get that that’s a feature but technically fender and catalyst also have infinite tweaking you could do too. I don’t know what percentage of people actually use tone studio or companion apps, but I bet it’s less than 100% - which means if you’re buying just to use the tones coming out of the amps stock, this starts to get at a comparison. I’m just a hobby player like a lot of people thinking about buying new gear that they see in videos online and I feel this is an honest look at how an average player might try to get tones out of these.

Good enough for a lot of guitarists to chase after that very sound 50 years later. Perhaps we are looking too hard and missing the obvious. I have to say that your dissection of the sounds being produced is quite eccentric - I'm not criticizing but listen again to your recording from 20:00 .

      Fair enough! This covers the range from $250 to $1000 in the following order from highest to lowest:
      1. Tone master: $1000
      2. Orange super crush: $650-700
      3. Catalyst 200w: $400-500
      4. Fender GTX 50: $350
      5. Katana 50 mk ii: $250
      So actually tone master is 4x katana, ~3x fender, ~2x catalyst & ~1.5x the orange…

    Katana, you HAVE to use the App to throw a global High and low cut. Also, imho, with the Katana or Catalyst, the best tone doesn't always match the amp Model name. For instance, on the Katana, the best crunch, low gain crunch isn't necessarily found on the Crunch channel. Best Clean on the Catalyst, imho is not the Clean Amp model. And oddly, you never rank the Orange high on Clean, low, high gain, but then it #2 overall?
