I would like to learn the dimensions of the piazza - the length and the depth. On a recent tour of Mount Vernon, I asked several guides but they didn't know the answer. Next time, I'm going to take a tape measure with me and determine for myself the dimensions.

I once read it was about 90 feet. There was a quote about Washington walking up and down it on cold, snowy days to get exercise when he couldn't get out.

Mount Vernon appears to be much more imposing in photographs and film than it actually is. In person you are aware that it isn't built on such a large scale and is humble farmhouse which has been expanded over the years.

The mansion is 11,028 square feet and has 21 rooms with 2 1/2 stories and a cellar. It was certainly large for its day in colonial America. Even today the average home in America is 2,600 square feet. You can learn more on our website: www.mountvernon.org/the-estate-gardens/the-mansion/

I believe queen Elizabeth 2 said when she visited it was a nice cozy cottage.

I’d have to personally disagree. The first time seeing Mount Vernon for me, it looked bigger in real life than in photographs and film. I remember walking around a bend up the front pathway, around some bushes and trees, and seeing the mansion coming into view. I still remember how imposing and large it seemed in comparison with photos, which I thought did not do it justice. This was back in November 2016. That’s how it is with most large structures/formations. They look larger in person, at least for me.

Lawrence was George's half brother, not step brother.

Lawrence was George Washington 's half brother not his step brother. Lawrence's wife rented Mt. Vernon to George after she remarried. Then her daughter died and George inherited Mt. Vernon.

Interesting facts and quite a humble small structure considering the American people wanted to make him a king.
I love the fake window design..Shows even Washington had the good horse sense to build a place of privacy safe from voyuerism! 😉

1:12 Laurence wasn't Washington's step-brother, he was his half-brother. Pretty glaring mistake for someone who works at Mt. Vernon. Now about that shirt . . .

Laurence was his half brother not step brother! He also inherited it from Laurences widow! Laurences widow and daughter, who inherited the mansion, both died. George was 'renting' the property from his sister in law
