I helped split some cyprus shakes for My Vernon. I found a clay pipe on Douge Creek near the grist mill. The archeologicist decided it was a drop. I loved living next to My Vernon and on non preserved parts of the farms from 65 to 95. It just got to expensive and we ( my wife and myself) to rural SC. There is a lot of history here but I do miss boating on the Potomac River.

Do you mean the reclining Howdy Doody? The first time I saw it, I thought, "Isn't that pose a little seductive for a _boy_ marionette without strings?" I became fascinated by puppets (worked with a hand inside) and marionettes (worked with strings) due to "Howdy Doody," with host, "Buffalo" Bob Smith and "Kukla, Fran, and Ollie," Burr Tilstom's creations. I still remember some of the antics of Clarabelle the Clown (male, actually) on Howdy Doody and Beulah the Witch on KF&O. I had a Howdy Doody marionette, whose mouth was spring-loaded and operated by a string in the back with a ring on it like a ventriloquist's dummy (never knew why).

Disagreement on the reason of his death? I’d say he had throat infection and draining 40% of his blood was literally the nail in the coffin. And I heard the older physician would not allow the young physician to perform a tracheotomy when his throat swelled shut. But after losing 40% of his blood, the tracheotomy might have only prolonged his suffering.

I visited Mt. Vernon on a field trip in 8th grade. Before entering, we had to go through a ticket booth run by 2 older ladies. As we walked through, one of the ladies said "Nobody gets past us without a ticket!", while the other lady nodded her head in vehement agreement. And this all happened just as me and my buddy walked past without showing our tickets 😝

Martha emancipated the remaining slaves 'early' (before her death, as was originally planned to only after).. someone attempted to burn down the main house (mt. vernon). While no specific person was identified, she freed them all for fear another attempt could be made to burn it as it was suspected one or more were responsible for the arson attempt.

If you were a slave you would want to be owned by Washington and Jefferson as both men were serious gardeners. Washington is considered America's first scientific farmer. Jefferson actually bought vegetables from his slaves who were allowed to grow their own food. Read "Founding Gardeners" as a reference.

Can the spirit of a slave owner be at rest? Of course there are ghosts on plantations the guilty twisted soul of a slave owners. They very much knew it was not only wrong but evil. However the convenience of being waited on hand and foot and reaping huge profits without breaking a sweat was too good a justification to pass up.
