I was 11 years old when this was filmed. I loved tennis, but this Bjorn Borg wasn't the one I adored. That came the next year, in 1975, when Bjorn locked down his hair under his fila headband & won everything under the sun from 1975 - 1981. It's hard to chose a favourite player...but Bjorn Borg, Roger, Martina, Carlos & Andy Murray are my top 5 for sure.
Tennis requires 100% motivation and he just lost motivation to keep playing. You get to a point when even winning isn’t enough to satisfy you and when that happens it’s easy to want to find other things to do with your life
I grew up in Sweden in the seventies and of course Björn Borg was a huge idol of mine. I started to play tennis, like thousands of other children, but I never reached any success, though I was born the same year as Stefan Edberg. The longhaired lady interviewed in the clip is Ingrid Bentzer, who was the best female Swedish tennis player at the time. I'm not sure who the blond girl is, but she is talking about Helena Anliot who was Björn's first girlfriend.
I started paying attention to tennis (ie Wimbledon) a couple of years after this when Borg was already well established as the perennial champ, and oddly I don't recall him having heartthrob status. Mind you he did have a beard by then! I do recall that when he retired it seemed to me he had been around forever, and I couldn't believe he was only 26.
He always had beard at Wimbledon, likely because he had it when he won in 76. He was a bit superstitious I think. He was twice selected as the most famous sport person in the world, second to Ali. So he was so followed by fans everywhere. In Wimbledon 74 he had a fake girlfriend to keep the fans away, didnt help though..
A reminder that ABBA weren't the only Swedish sensations that year. It's extremely interesting to see Ilie Năstase featured there as another one of the new long-haired brigade invading the tennis scene at the time as there's an indirectly ABBA-related connection going on between him and Björn Borg - and 'Yours Truly', for good measure! Ilie is one of the more prominent celebrities who share my birthday of 19th July. A rather less prominent personality who does is Isabelle Morizet, who during her singing career first in the 1970s then in the 1980s was known variously as Carene Cheryl, then Karen Cheryl, from autumn 1978 onwards. In her 'Karen' years she released a song dedicated to Björn Borg entitled 'Rock 'n' Roll tennis', that could just as well have been dedicated to her fellow child of 19th July. In her 'Carene' years she did a French-language cover of ABBA's 'Mamma Mia!' as the flip-side to her single 'Samedi, dimanche et fêtes', slightly re-titled to 'Oh! Mam(m)a mia'. If one drops by my channel there's a video presented in my best French celebrating the fiftieth anniversary of the signing of the ten-year recording contract between Carene Cheryl and her Producer/Manager, «Mémé» Ibach on 25th April 1974, where 'Oh! Mam(m)a mia' is played. I clearly recall my older brother having a 'thing' for Chris Evert and her passing very closely by him when he once went to Wimbledon, which was a bit of a 'wow!' moment for him.
I assumed that he, being Swedish, might have been wearing yellow and blue. Throughout the entire video, he's wearing a lot of orange, which I thought was a Dutch national team colour. "Maybe he just loved wearing the colour orange," you might say. I'm sorry. I was just trying to make small talk.

Bjorn could have won more grand slams than anyone else but decided to retire at 26. Crazy when you think of it. He was something else.

I want that tracksuit.
Adidas originals are best.
Bjorn Borg was the first Rockstar tennis player !
Those Adidas Originals are the best ever. His jacket to me looks like Dutch football team shirts of 1974

Ah my sister was a teenager in the 70s, and loved him. I was just a small child.
Steppenwolf even did a song about Borg. It's called "Bjorn to be Wild."
Find his advert for Diadora Borg Elite tennis shoes. Genius copywriting.
It is the first time I've seen how good looking of Borg, I think he's better than some of the best in Hollywood.
Some resemblance to Ryan Gosling
Much better
And when John McEnroe came to the scene. It was love at first sight. Talladega Nights baby.

Where did he get his shoulder pads from ?
I am forever mocked by my family because as a kid I read his name as Borjan Bong. 😂
😀 My family never let me forget that when I first started talking I called flies "lullahs". And no, I don't know why.
…that racket is the size of a ping-pong paddle 😂😂😂
And the balls were still white!
Good player but my favourite was always Jimmy Connors.
