    Borg was already on his way to greatness. Vijay Amritraj had all the skills but maybe not the mental strength to win the big ones. Here he defeated Borg. At Wimbledon 77 or 78 I believe he took Borg to 5 sets again but this time Borg won as part of his run of 6 consecutive finals. Fantastic times those days!

      Vijay got bad case tennis elbow in his mid twenties and he was never the same player again. He moved to a lighter racket etc, but it always affected his game. They didn't have the same medical capabilities that they have now.

      +Alan Chong Totally agree. The racquet skills these guys had, especially Amritraj on his volleys, and Borg's return of serve, great stuff. This type of game is so entertaining to watch. Speed is a weapon the players had to generate on occassion, not something that simply came with racquet technology. So much more rewarding to watch.

      This matchup between a young Borg and Vijay...I could watch it all day. The camera angle is great too! Everytime Vijay serves to Borg's backhand, Borg nails it! Hahaha. Unreal!

      +Alan Chong is there a year we can say where today's tennis became a different game to this incredible tennis? I would say probably mid 90's maybe earlier?
      It is SUCH a different game nowadays and much much worse. Give Djokovic a 420g, 63sq" head, with old strings and balls and he would be no better than Borg!
      Tennis is my passion but I can't watch modern tennis anymore. Once Federer goes that's it. I give pro tennis 15 more years tops!

    • @alanchong7513
      @alanchong7513 8 лет назад +3

      Jimmy Connors Tennis Matches That is a good question. I would go so far as to say that once graphite rackets became the norm, this type of contest between the serve volleyer and the baseliner was never the same. Wooden rackets made it a better contest. I can't watch today's tennis. Every player is a baseliner. It's terrible!

    • @alanchong7513
      @alanchong7513 8 лет назад

      Jimmy Connors Tennis Matches Players used to look to come to the net. Nowadays, there is no volleying because groundstrokes are too powerful. How boring has it become! The best baseliner wins each tournament now. So predictable!

    @NikhilBorse123 12 лет назад +8

    Absolutely! I'm a nadal fan but I like the serve and volley players too. Infact, volleying is something I do better than retrieving, but the faster surfaces are disappearing now a days. But people seem to misunderstand it, the homogenisation of courts isn't the biggest factor, it's the racquet technology that has evolved the sport into what it is today

    This country loves Cricket so much that it doesnt even care about its achievements in other sports.

    @ Lawrence Johnson. If the wood tennis racket that Vijay Amritraj played with in his 1974 U.S. Open match against Borg was a Snauwert racket , it would have been a 70- square inch racket not a 90- square inch racket because 90 -square inch tennis rackets were not introduced into tennis until the early 1990's in the graphite era in tennis history.

    Conventional sized racquets gave the men's game finesse and depth of play. That is all gone with the large racquets of today because with the men's game it's nothing but power shots. It has helped the women's game, though, by giving women more power in their shots but it's overkill with the men's game.

Ramesh Krishnan would be close...only he was too soft and no power at all...but as Tennis players these are the only players who can be counted and remembered...that also shows...our sports Ministry is not concerned to devise and get Federations in India professional and personnel to search the Country side with 5 year olds and invest with Sponsors to build Decent if not world class Tennis cum educational academies to target raw budding talents into performers and future champions ..

      @Golden Calf Indians had Ramanathan Krishnan who played two wimbledon semi finals. He defeated players like Rod Laver.
      Today Indian Tennis players are simply reached 1st round of Grand Slams. I had even seen Leander Paes reaching second and third rounds of almost all the Grand Slams. Mahesh Bhupati was also reached 2nd and third rounds of grand slams.
      India's best Indian Player in the past 2 decades was Somdev Varman. All he could do is reaching 2 nd rounds of a Grand Slam.
      To be frank I didnt see any Indian reaching 3rd round of a Grand Slam in the next ten years.
      In India I have seen many girls practicing Tennis. And after Sania we didnt hear a name. We dont have infrastructure. Financial support is hardly there.
      Ramanathan Kishnan was actually a businessman. He was an amatuer. He even missed prestigious tournaments to take care of his business interests. And still he could reach semifinals of Wimbledon twice.
      And these days all we could produce is worthless Tennis Academies. They are there to make money for incompetent coaches.

      When he made his fairly brief comeback attempt after some years away from the sport he insisted on using his old wooden racquets versus everyone else's modern metal and composite racquets. I wondered what would have happened if he'd made the switch.

      @@beavercleaver7848, he put a lot of topspin on the ball with his old wood racket, but the amount he could put on with a more modern racket would have been insane.

    This was the only time that Amritraj beat Borg, who had a somewhat disappointing career at the US Open, compared to how dominating Borg was at Wimbledon and the French Open. The US Open was not held on a grass court for much longer. It was held briefly at Forest Hills on clay and then switched for good to hard courts.

    Frank Hammond was the umpire at the famous McEnroe vs Nastase US Open blowup. I can't remember the year. In the late 70's. Either 1979 or 1980.

    Vijay lost but won the hearts of million with his classic serve and volley.If he won he would have changed the fate of Borg who won 5 times continously Wooden rackets were used. Class is missing now a days . If our record breaking players of to day play with heavy wooden racket the ball never cross the net. Murray , Jokovich , Nadal and Federer got injuries and keep out of tennis for a long time.

      I think you are mixing this match up with Wimbledon a few years later. Either way, i wish wooden rackets were still used and only small headed.

    Paes, Amritraj and Ramesh Krishnan were some of the players who took singles pretty seriously. It was in the latter half of his career did Paes switch over to doubles when he realised singles is not his cup of tea.

    Borg is crushing the ball. That is a 125 mph serve with 90 square inch Snauwert wooden racquet, unbelievable. This was when tennis was a real game.

    Love this Serve and volley grass court game.Today's tennis is boring. First shot to last shot same.
    Vijay with his talent should have won at least one Wimbledon. I saw him in calcutta in 1974 Davis Cup against Australia. India won.vijay had the best chance to win Wimbledon but he lost a close match to eventual winner Kodes.

    50 years ago, the matches between the A & B of the ABC of the future tennis, as the tennis pundits forecast!
    Didn't know Amritraj was using the T2000 Wilson way back then, as Connors did. But by the end of the decade, I remember seeing both Borg and Amritraj playing with the Borg endorsed Donnay.
    Thank you both, for those years when we got our tennis scores in the newspapers (and the B&W sports magazines), and had to wait till the 80s to see these matches on video tapes.
    And now, thanks to RUclips, it's on tap, anytime, anywhere!

      Borg seems to have a more forward motion in his serve than, at times, he did later in his career. This being said, later on, he could deliver bullets.

      @@drobson8004 I remember reading the B&W illustrated tutorial-'Play tennis the Bjorn Borg Way' - syndicated in the sports mags in the 70s, early 80s. He apparently changed his serving stance, from both feet parallel to the baseline, to turning left foot perpendicular to the baseline. That gave him a bit more power on his serve. On Lennart Bergelin's advice.
