Never aware that the grass was changed 20 years ago to make bounces more consistent. My last grass court game was 30 years ago during my uni days. I always thought that it was the increased power of the new rackets making passing shots easier that killed the serve & volley game. Thanks for the info John.
If the old rackets did not have the quality to pass someone as easy as with today’s rackets then I’d guess they also did not have the quality to volley as easy as with today’s rackets. What I mean is this: old rackets had a smaller and more fragile surface of where you could hit the ball properly. But if that was the case it should not only have made passing shots more difficult but also volleys. So it equalled out eventually.
@@ostihpem The modern day rackets are more powerful so a player can stay way back and still make a passing shot fast enough that the net player cannot move fast enough to reach the passing shot. A modern racket is lighter and more stable, so volley is easier, only when you can reach the ball.

I wish I could go back to the 80s and watch all of those great matches live again. There's something about that era of tennis-> Not just the courts, but the rackets weren't as powerful and reliable. Not as many aces, but less power also allowed for more serve and volley. I miss that aspect of the game. There was nothing better than a perfect low volley or a passing shot back then. Either the tennis was more enjoyable or it was something about me being a kid and falling in love with sports-> But so many people say there was just something about the 80s in all sports that was pretty special.
Big fan of JM since he came on the scene as a player. I'm a Raider fan and somehow John brought out that me against the world mentality that I identify as a person and Raider fan. Translate that to tennis and I hung on to every point watching John and that started me playing tennis now for 40 years and still going. Old tennis players are now picking up pickle ball because they cannot move as well but I'm still playing tennis in my 60s. Beer has been a great source of reliving my glory days. Pickleball, maybe one day if my partner is attractive. Lol. Love this content for John. One of the greatest to play and THE GOAT in men's doubles. He was a GREAT tennis player ! He spoke so highly of his opponents … and that’s greatness TOO ! I was almost a teenager when he was a CHAMPION and my parents loved him so much ! And what’s not to like ?! Whenever I speak about great American tennis players , HE is the first that comes to my mind ! ⚾️🥎⚾️
"Why is serve and volley basically instinct?" Mr. Mac just forgot to mention the MOST important reason! And that's the change in racquet technology! Wooden racquets were extremely heavy with very little headsize and had horrible maneuverability (harder to swing, generating less power). Making it very hard to hit quick and powerful shots, especially passing shots!! That's why all players just rushed to the net even after very weak serves or shots. Their ability to generate spin was also incomparable to today's racquets. With those racquets, tennis was basically a different sport.
Real answer to the first question. Tennis like golf is an individual sport so any error you make you know you are at fault for and you know you can do better and you’ve done better so you blame yourself and end up being very critical because your errors can cost you the game

“i know something about meltdowns” we know you do, john, we know you do.
He had just a hint of a wry smile when he said it too.
When thinking of meltdowns, I go straight to Serena standing over that petite Asian lines person yelling "I'm going to shove this f)ing ball down your f)ing throat" and then lying about it to the tournament director. Or the Osaka meltdown. Truly incomprehensible how immature she is at nearly 40yrs old. Cheated (her coach admitted it on TV), lied about it, and then the histrionics just got started. She took away the referee's livelihood telling him he will NEVER judge another game of hers. And of course, the US Open bowed to the queen and said yes your highness, we shall obey for the sake of TV ratings and revenue. You just brought us 10 million more views. Thank you for your wonderful acting skills and performance, your highness. Then just for fun, she smashed her racquet as she has done a documented 257 times in matches.
@@joehalliday6081 yeah man i dont like serena either. such a brat and entitled. id rather watch mcenroe throw a fit
@@jwl00066 serena has 257 documented racquet smashes. Mac has only 43.
"YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS!!!"
When he was reading these questions someone who have screamed at him: "ANSWER MY QUESTION!"
G-d, I must be getting old. I remember watching all of Mr. McEnroe's matches.
You forgot the o in god.
You are
@@ImMarkJr no he didn’t. Some of us don’t believe in writing the whole word out. But you probably knew that, D-ck.
@@ImMarkJr You need to look again and see how it is printed out. IE there is a hyphen between the two letters.
Question on the thumbnail instantly reminds me of Djokovic lol 🤣😭
I'd love to see a pro tennis tournament with only wood racquets allowed. 🎾🎾
Nice job John, i really enjoyed it!👍

Congratulations Mac on your new award! Your French allegiance award is pretty impressive! Congratulations
A true athlete, hardcore and no BS 😂
He’s pissed off right at the intro. Perfect Mac! 😂
what a character! this was such an entertaining tech support
Great commentary! Very informative
This is hilarious, fun and informative. I love it!
Real answer to the first question. Tennis like golf is an individual sport so any error you make you know you are at fault for and you know you can do better and you’ve done better so you blame yourself and end up being very critical because your errors can cost you the game
