    The initial reviews were great. Unfortunately maintenance and repairs far outweighed the fuel savings.

      That must have something to do with diesel fuel quality in Europe vs the US. The german diesels will easily do 300k miles without major repairs. Even in Finland you see these with 500k and over on the odo..

      @@randomenzo apparently in the USA it’s the emission control devices and that could have to do with the diesel fuel. In Europe there are a LOT of diesel cars but in the USA it’s just an afterthought. The diesel fuel is meant for those big behemoth trucks that are built like the old Mercedes diesels used to be

      European emissions standards are just as tight if not tighter than US. The Urea Injection DEF (adblue) is actually available via nozzle at most fuel stations immediately next to the diesel fuel nozzle.
      The quality of diesel fuel is most likely higher there however.
      Also the driving habits are different, the emissions filters need to get hot in order to function correctly as well as self-clean. In the US we take a lot of short trips, I can’t speak for all of Europe but when I lived in Germany for a few years it seemed like most places were friendly to walk to the grocery or local restaurants and you didn’t necessarily drive unless you actually had somewhere to go.

      It was the particulate filter and Urea injection system that were trouble prone and would trip the MIL constantly. The DPF would load up with soot after only about 60-80K miles and need replacement.
