The "Fall" of Heatran in Gen 9.

- Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen a big shakeup with the release of Gen 9's new DLC. Competitive mainstay Heatran had a rough experience in the early DLC metagame with Veil Baxcalibur and the all new Ogerpon Hearthflame running rampant. As a result, Heatran usage plummeted and it is currently ranked in UU.
Will it remain that way forever? I don't believe so. And in UU right now, Heatran is a powerful force to be reckoned with.

Some will never figure out how to get Heatran in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Heatran Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Heatran Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Heatran fell into UU, just to be greated by even more ground types, it really can't catch a break.
“Eight fucking ground types. Holy shit.”
grounds aren't really good heatran answers most of the time. Most don't resist magma storm.
grounds are prob not the best answers to heatran because magma storm -> tera grass often ruint hem and its a great way to remove them easily... most counterplay are bulky pokemon like eq mence, sub np hydreigon, av torn-t, or just pressure it with hazards.
A team with hazard stack can make heatran switching in and out as its a common playstyle of chipping thinsg down with magma storm is pretty good but when you switch into rocks + spikes that accumulates fairly quickly
It's like when Golem was kicked out of Gen 1 OU and was greeted by almost every fully evolved Water type in UU.
IMO Heatran has been the true Ol' Reliable of every OU in the past. Seeing it down in UU makes me kind of worried that most mons are just gonna be powercrept out generation by generation.
OU is just gonna turn into the tier for whats not op enough for ubers. Incredibly boring and i suppose lower tiers and old gens will just be what people like to play because of exciting meta changes and room for experimentation
We should make more tiers to get ready for the next generation of insane mons
Always has been.
Gen 3 made Gen 2 mostly irrelevant. Gen 5 nuked most of Gen 4. Etc etc.
It depends
Gen 7 and Gen 8 didn't really introduced game breaking because of VGC
We gotta see
Pokemon rise and fall as more options are introduced. Don't forget moltres was in OU for some time this Gen.
Heatran is one of the most consistent competitive pokémon of all time
This iconic Fire/Steel type has had a solid place in OU in every single generation of Competitive Singles
Heatran is a rare fire type that can withstand Stealth Rock thanks to it's complementary steel typing
With flash fire granting it a complete immunity to fire type moves and its many useful resistances this pokemon has great defensive utility.
It has good stats, and a massive special attack in particular, along with the signature move "Magma Storm", which can trap enemies while doing massive damage.
i just earthquaked this so stfu now
Finally someone who speaks up for us bugbros.
Fairy has no business resisting bug.
Bug also shouldn’t be weak to rock, bugs literally hide under rocks
It’s crazy how such strong OU staples fell to UU. Like Roaring Moon shreds UU to pieces.
I cant stop crying over the fact that it couldve been heatrover for heatran 😭
I knew the issue the moment the video started. “Heatran is well balanced...”
In this meta, you have to have 130 in every single stat.
Every defensive mon below shuckle with blissey HP just drops lmao
“Heatran uses Terra Fairy Terrablast to take down Hoopa Unbound.” was not a sentence I thought would ever describe a turn in UnderUsed.
Iron Treads is one of the most interesting additions to the Gen 9 metagame.
"is it Heatrover" hahaha love it. Great content as usual, been watching a lot more of your vids lately! :)
I love it when you try the builded teams, it's like a cool pt2 of every video! 🗿
The circumstances for Heatran to be UU are truly insane
Let's give Heatran a go in UU, and see how powerful it really is.
Heatran will always be remembered in our hearts o7
7:55 Not gonna lie, to this day, I still get confused by Fairy's type matchups. I always need to recheck whether Fire resitsts Fairy or Fairy resists Fire.
Heatran in UU is actually insane.
Somewhere on showdown in the next ten years, "Koraidon, Zacian, and Kyogre on the same team in UU? What is this, SV ubers?"
It's Kyovre
I feel like Empoleon has essentially become the Heatran at home of OU. Similar resistance chart, good sp atk and sp def. It's not as bulky but it has reliable recovery as well as knock off. I've been using it a lot and it's been holding me down as a special wall
I've also been enjoying empoleon in OU. With webs everywhere right now, competitive can be a nice punish in the right circumstances, too.
@@honjon666 Yeah I was getting outplayed for 10 turns by a webs team but then I one shot their Tusk with my Empoleon and they forfeit
Keep up the amazing work, your videos are such a joy to watch and listen. Can't get commentary like this in anywhere else.
I was just testing this team before seeing this video and got mega clapped, as I'm not used to playing on this powerlevel at all.
One of the most consistent fire typing mons: UU
Bee: OU
Beedrill is OU?
Even if heatran has dropped to uu, I still enjoy using is as a check to the popular iron moth. Rotom wash is also nice for dealing with most other water types in ou but does definetely feel a bit frailer than it was in previous gens.
It makes me sad to see this fall. Maybe it can work as a counter to iron mugulis in another life
I think with these rise and fall videos we have to keep in mind new toy syndrome and be waiting for the meta game to stabilize to see where they actually lie and not just flash in the pan moments
it really defines how the meta game in Scarlet and Violet turned OU staples like Chomp, Heatran, and Mence dropping to UU. To be good in this meta you have to have a gimmick that pushes you towards ubers
Gen 9 is so bitter sweet, I love the new mons so much but I hate what they’ve done to the older mons 😭
Most gen 9 mons replaced older mons on my favs list but holy shit most of them are either hot garbage or straight up gods its frustrating honestly (❤ spidops)
When you mentioned Shadow Ball, I immediately thought about it being a physical attack because I have been binging your ADV tournament recently.
Live reaction to Jim learning that bug type got shafted once again, very vindicating
This is insane

Great Iron Treads video
I would love to see you do an updated gen 3 OU tier list once ADV revival has concluded. With a ton of new players bringing a lot of unique strategies to the table, I think a lot of formerly overlooked pokemon have had a bit more time in the limelight. I think it would be interesting to hear your thoughts once all is said and done in the tournament.
Hi JimothyCool thanks for this very informative and neat Iron Treads video
Man, seeing a whole slate of 570 BST mons + Slowking (Regen) as a UU team is wild.
Bro had viper playing as his outro music 💀😭 the goat 🐐
The Heatran death of the universe...
It had a good Heatrun, but it Heatran its course
Tera is a huge factor as well, Heatran thrives on its ability to pack in a lot of resists for its slot
Tera let’s many other Pokémon pull off a similar role, walling things with it’s regular type or changing to beat its counters
Heatran also works well by trapping pokemon that it can beat, Tera let’s pokemon that it normally counters beat it in return… Gliscor for example never wants to switch into it’s Magma Storm but adding Tera Water means Heatran can’t beat it anymore
What an overload of op ground types in OU does to a mon
At some point I wonder if we should have a tier between OU and UU. Now that we're over 1000 Pokémon (and fully in the powercreep era), it's inevitable that some old staples will need to drop tiers, which will either fill up the BLs or push other old staples in the tier below even further down.
We now have a new and improved end screen. This is a monumental development.
I must say “heatrover” may perhaps be too much of a leap Mr Cool.
It's Weavover.
It's Garchover.
It's Heatrover.
It's Brelover.
It's Thundurover.
It's Tyranitover.
It's Tornadover.
It's Rotom-Washover.
It's Magnezover.
heatran never left my teams tbf. the way it can trap a-tails leads is so good
Heatran in Gen 4. Whooo!
jim cool is the best competitive pokémon channel idgaf
Flower trick doesn't make contact BTW
That's the flowers greatest trick yet.
"Holy shit" - Heatran, probably
Videos like this make me very proud to be a Jimcool subscriber. Bug types deserve better, we do not need the oppression of being resisted by Fighting, Poison, and Fairy types. Plus, Heatran is cool and fun. This is insane.
Rip heatran
I always find heatran dropping even more suprising than garchomp dropping.
At the start of gen 9, we all knew it was gonna fall soon. There were just overall better picks like great tusks that provided more offensive potential or more reliable utility. That fact was reinforced after home dropped, releasing hamurott and enamerous. And now that after dropping when it should have dropped a long time ago people are just now suprised for it like this is some new news?
Heatran in post home meta still had some ulitily and potential even after the lost of toxic. It still has pretty decent bulk, an awesome offensive movepool and especially flash fire. And with the release of tera, it now has a more direct way to deal with water and ground types than HP grass could only dream of. However, it seemed to have dropped immedietly once ogrepon and gliscor came into the picture. Its one thing to drop after giving it your all for so much time, its completely different to have a OU titan fall right out of nowhere.
The reason why Garchomp got 85% of the attention is because Heatran is only truly popular in the competitive arena, while Garchomp is a 4th generation legend.
On god
@@reneantoniorodriguezippoli7561 that explains it. Always found it odd that every other response was got was "heatran lost toxic. It immedietly got so bad it should drop to PU" or something like that.
@@jossuecabrera8611To be honest, for all that indifference that the community showed, it seemed to me one of the biggest insults towards Heatran because it shows that they only see it as a tool that can be half forgotten when it stops being efficient.
IT'S HEATROVER SADEG
i didn't understand how bad power creep was until i looked at both teams in this video and had to parse these were UU teams...
heatrun, heatran… heatwillrunagain
8 fucking ground types
"Holy shit"
-heatran probably
it's crazy to me how bad the power creep is that so many ou staples are now in uu
"This iconic fire steel type" meanwhile I had no idea this mf was a legendary until recently
I could definitely see Heatran coming back to OU in the near future.
What amazing UU tier is become
Despite the fact that "Heatrover" literally makes no sense, considering that those two words don't even share a syllable, you still decided to put it in the title cause why the fuck not. What an absolute chad, we love you for this as well.
Heatran needs a special form change or held item maybe the magma stone you used to summon it in the older games
I love this channel
Heatran in uu makes me want to cry. It destroys sun, and its ban would be beneficial to my existence
Considering that fire ogerpon has been banned and roaring moon is planni g to be as well, i wouldnt be shocked if heatran comes back to ou tbh
Roaring moon van doesn’t get rid of the many ground types that threaten it
@stonalisa3729 heatran did mostly fine even with the many ground types in ou, it was specially ogerpon that ruined everything due to mold braker, also roaring moon is just generally a massive problem that everything is suffering from
"Holy shit"
Heatran, probably
idk if you could get a video out of it, but does anyone else think its interesting how Gliscor has decreased H-Samurott’s viability, and has in some ways made Hatterene more relevant again?
now the premier spiker cant bypass magic bounce again, hatterene is a more effective counter to hazard spam
But Eq will do good damage to hat and toxic heal will out heal damage from hat
Heatran is the best counter to Iron Moth. It saved me several matches where the moth would have swept.
I suppose you could say things sre really heating up in UU
The endless jimothy content machine chugs on without pause, and yet we are no closer to securing justice against iron mugulis, iron fellow, saving flamigo from himself, and cutting off the head of the snake by legally attacking goldengo. In these uncertain times, progress is not guaranteed, but updates would be appreciated on any progress made. Thank you.
this is inflame
Fairy resisting Bug is still one of Game Freak's most stupid decisions. Sure, give the best type in the game a resistance to the undisputed worst type and leave it like that for more than a decade like it's perfectly fine.
Bug should resist fairy give the lil guys something gf pls
For some low ladder fun I run Sub, Protect, Torment, lava plume
It's caused so many frustrated forfeits
6:19
flower trick does not make contact
At this point we are going to need a new tier ouu is the way to go
Gliscor is the only formet OU titan that survived Gen 9 Powercreep
Ive been playing pokemon since release of pokemon yellow. I've played every pokemon main game, and most sideline games. Ive been playing competitive off and on since 5th gen. Ive seen it all. I NEVER would have thought Heatran would lose OU status.
Quite Ironic that Heatran is rising in usage in VGC with every regulation while it has fallen from grace in singles.
Im surprised that heatran fell from OU to UU but it makes sense cause theres alot of ground Mon on gen9 like great tusk, mamoswine, and gliscor but We know that heatran is coming back on OU.
I think 1, tera is making a lot of these perennial 4x weak OU staples harder to choose over other mons with similar types or roles because of the extra coverage tera allows, 2 their movepools don't allow them to leverage tera offensively, 3 they become a tera sink that can be exploited if your other threats aren't more pressing.
Hoopa-unbound is UU...
WTF happened to the Pokemon meta?
THIS IS INSANE
Hoopa unbound was never that good lol
@@y.f8139 Given its stats, you wouldn't think so
It's Hoopa-Unbover
It's always funny when lower teirs resemble previous gens ous
Yo Jim my man I got a pretty cool gen 3 team I'd like for you to see how I send it to ya
Garchomp, Landorus and Heatran being considered “just alright” is proof that Gen 9 is either the best competitive gen or the worst.
I feel like Heatran fell because of its predictability. It always runs Tera Grass.
Heatran when the best mon in the tier is a ground type: 🥺
Will Heatran break back into OU, and will Heatran break through to Great Tusk?
Bro heatran’t keep up
Sad Gwogobo Noises
Gwobogobo 😢
Blame it all on the 8 f*cking ground types
We just have to accept that this gen Uu power level = Ou of previous gens
"Fellow Gen 4 Legend Breloom" Uh....
I have said ut many times and I will say it again: Fairy should be weak to bug instead.
thing is, it's actually solid in OU
Ain’t no way that OU staples across several generations like Garchomp, Landorus-T, Amoonguss, Breloom (to some extent), and Heatran have all fallen to UU. Want to play SwSh OU but you can change types? Just go to UU
