Articuno’s Rare Uses in Competitive.

  • Pokemon Competitive Singles has seen the triumphant return of many Legendaries of the past, thanks to Pokemon Home Compatibility. Articuno is notoriously one of the worst Legendaries in Competitive Singles, and in Gen 9 that is no different. But believe it or not, Articuno was once actually a usable Pokemon in OU. Let's take a look at the rare instances where Articuno had distinct and desirable qualities.
Iron Mugulis and Iron Fellow know all about it.
Only Jim knows about the viability of Articuno. All other sources of information are liars and are inaccurate.

My Outro is a remix made by me that I submitted to the Viper Rapper RUclips channel:
    • Viper - You'll Goin Ma...
Some will never figure out how to get Articuno in Pokemon Scarlet and Pokemon Violet. But famous player Jim Cool is well aware of the Best Articuno Moveset in Competitive, and even how to Articuno Shiny Farm. Many aren't and never will be. That's just the unfortunate reality of the world.
Galarian Articuno is uninvolved with this. This is regular Articuno, not Articuno-Galar, also colloquially known as Galarticuno, by a small amount of people, or perhaps nobody. The Galar region is totally separate in relevance.
    Arceus exists.
The below text is very relevant to many people.
Game Freak just blew all other online game development schools out of the water with this incredible new 2022 release. You're gonna need to get a game design degree online, and FAST, if you want to make a better game than this. Not even the best strategy games android reddit could hold a candle to this breathtaking Next generation competitive Pokemon experience.
Scream Tail is the Jigglypuff of our wildest dreams. It has been buffed with some higher statistics and the incredible ability, Protosynthesis. Gen 9 Competitive Pokemon wouldn't be the same without this powerful pink blob. He kinda looks like someone I met in one of my game design and development courses.
Gen 9 Pokemon Showdown is one of the greatest online gaming sites in history. From Pikachu and Charizard, to Palafin and Roaring Moon, The new Pokemon games, Pokemon Scarlet & Violet, have introduced a lot of new faces. Can I succeed in one of the best android games of all time? If so, I'm gonna get myself a Walmart bakery Pokemon cake to celebrate.
Gholdengo is a Pokemon made of pure gold. He must have done some online business management courses to accumulate all that wealth. Or perhaps he might want to learn how to make money playing video games on RUclips. In any case, he's a powerful metagame force, with absolutely no interest in online game development schools.

Honestly, if the Ice type got enough buffs to make Ice a decent defensive type, Articuno would've been a very excellent defensive utility Pokemon (in Gen 8 at least, this bird's movecuts in Gen 9 is unfair). It had Roost for longevity, Heal Bell for teammate support, Freeze-Dry or Hurricane for overall damage, Whirlwind to cast out any unwanted opponents, Haze to disable setup sweepers, and Defog for hazard removal. This seemed to be a recipe for the best support Pokemon man has seen but they screwed up by making a block of slightly colder water weak to everything.

If I could buff the ice type, I would do only one two things: give it resistances to ground and water. Have water and ice resist each other, and just also give ice a resistance to ground. These two types are both very good, and would not suffer terribly by gaining these nerfs. Ground types are already deathly afraid of ice types, but this would make it so that ice types could much more easily switch in. Water types are in the same boat, where they would still be good, but ice would gain MUCH needed buffs. With this, I’ve would have snow, immunity to freeze effects, and exclusive access to aurora vail.
Ice types are still very offensive in nature, having more weaknesses than resistances, which lets them keep their glass canon feel. But now they at least don’t fall over to a light breeze, and they have some ways to get on the field safely.
These changes still fit thematically, as well. If you have more ice than water, the water will freeze. If you have more water than ice, the ice will melt (generally). Ground is susceptible to permafrost, and glacier press down the ground. The ground by itself has a hard time pushing ice away.
The point isn’t to make ice types busted, it’s to make them viable. Ice has a lot of offensive qualities that make them desirable, but they have so few resistances that it’s hard to get them on the field. If they just have a few resistances, so that they can actually leverage those advantages, it will make it more worthwhile to actually bring an ice type instead of just putting ice moves on your water type.

The video also shows that the power level of the first three gens was just much lower. Articuno crippling non SR weaknesses were frankly much less of an issue with the way a lot of the times a move having more that 80bp was a luxury, and movepools were so bad that most Pokemons had an HP for coverage one way or another instead of basically every Type having a ~80 BP good stuff attack to use for coverage that wete widely distributed as TMs or Move tutors. Defensive Ice Types were also helped by the fact that Ice weaknesses only really became relevant way later into the gens.

Frankly, I'd love to see them go all the way and move 30 points from its attack to its Sp. Atk, restoring the 125/125 special it had in Gen 1.
Additionally, Snow Cloak being its hidden ability is a waste given that evasion boosting is pretty much universally banned in singles at this point. Articuno's dex entries are all about it passively causing snowstorms, so it seems obvious to give it Snow Warning! With the changes in Gen 9, Articuno would be setting itself up with effectively 150/125 defenses which might just bulky enough to justify its bad typing if paired with the aforementioned Sp. Attack buff.

To fix Articuno you'd need to change a good bit about it... Give it Magic Guard, access to Quiver dance, and add the Frostbite status from PLA... then just grant it a Frostbite version of Scald, or an Ice attack that summons Snow on use

    • @haydeniskander5306
      @haydeniskander5306 Год назад +1

I was thinking Sheer Force, but Magic Guard might be better for Articuno specifically. What do you think of adding Earth Power and Focus Blast for coverage?
Quiver Dance is interesting. I think that Magic Guard would be completely OP with Quiver Dance. Because w/ Sheer Force, Articuno at least still fears Knock Off and other residual damage.

I think if discussing Articuno, you have to mention just how broken Blizzard was in japanese Red and Green, with an absolutely nuts 110 power + 90% accuracy + 30% freeze. Surely that, at least, would have been enough for it to do well.

  • @jman2050

Shoutouts to the original Japanese Red/Green games where Blizzard had a *30%* freeze chance on top of being 90% accurate.

This also means nothing because at the end of the day Articuno is always ZU and Kanto levels were low enough that it seemed good.

With Articuno as my only special wall.
Hilariously, not even Gengar's Thunderbolt could deal enough chip to Articuno.
Protect + Wish Salamence were somehow more than enough to keep Articuno from falling to any Special super-effective damage (barring crits).
There was even one time that Zapdos only did 55%~ with Thunderbolt.
With Toxic, Protect, Heal Bell, and Icy Wind, it threatened to cripple anything that wasn't a Steel-type.
Not even Blissey could out-stall Articuno, because Pressure in ADV is broken.
Leech Seed didn't work when Celebi gets Toxic'd and BP's -1 Speed.

You don’t need to pronounce the “t” in Poltchageist. It’s clearly based around matcha. In Japanese it’s just said “maccha” and the double “c” denotes a slight pause when saying it. It’s just that “chi” is part of the “ta chi tsu te to” part of the alphabet, so, if you type on some computers it’s “ti” and well it’s part of that anyways, so it’s possible some romaji thing caused the t to become part of how we spell it in English. I don’t know the history of matcha entirely.

I’ve been able to sweep countless teams with it. It’s especially good at curb-stoming full legendary teams peoples just love trying. I’ve found it to still be somewhat bulky too which is infinitely better once I Tera Dragon it. I haven’t really messed with the other to yet

articuno was heavily abused from the start: The slowest of the legendary birds, losing his big special attack in exchange for defense in the second generation (just like Flareon in the trio of water, fire, electric) and giving him a defensive ability that he didn't complements his strengths.
Making comparisons, the pokemon most similar to Articuno is lugia, with the difference that Lugia has 100 more base stats, a better type, better coverage, and excellent defensive ability.
