Random question, for editing vlogs. Do you think having any music track under A-Roll/Talking moments takes away from the video? Should music only be used under B-Roll sequences?
An entire video about music is coming in the very near future... 😉 But the short answer is music needs to reflect the action of the video. In the first ten seconds of this video, for example, I have electronic, bright music playing. When I say "$1,000,000" the music cuts out to highlight it...then the beat drops and the tempo picks up to show that having a $1,000,000 budget is exciting and that your mind races with possibilities. Then the music cuts out again when I reveal that it's only a $500 budget...So in the first 30 seconds, we've had about 4 music changes all to reflect the action of the video...TLDR: music should "yes and" the story.
I don't know if its too late to answer this question but audio (not necessarily music) can make what you saw have that power and flow it to the next scene. Love this specially for the intros. Bring music in and out to highlight what you want to convey

Bro your work always amazes me! Just tried working on a vlog based off of everything I’ve picked up from your videos and it feels it still is missing something! But it’s a start will drop it can keep learning from you. Man keep up the great work, I’ll keep watching!!
This helps a lot. I'm still nearer a beginner trying to add more b-roll to my edits ... it helps a lot to see where I need to eventually try to get (enhancing the b-roll further with sound and visual effects). It's not that I didn't already know that - but seeing the difference helps drive the point home.
Hey Brian, I’m working on making a channel for beginner editors. Is there something in particular you struggled with? Or something you want to learn still?
You may have only spent $500 in “raw materials” but your expertise, skill, experience, talent as a storyteller and artist is what makes that video worth A LOT more. I mean, how do you charge the client for your “Be An Artist” idea and the design of the video? If it only took you an hour to come up with it, does that mean you only charge your $125 hourly rate? No way! Plus, you should charge clients based on the value of the results your work gets, not the time and materials that went into making it. You’re not a commodity, Hillier! You’re an artist who can help clients solve problems and achieve their goals. That’s worth so much more than $500. 😎🤑 Kinda wish this vid was about how you can charge $5k, $10k, $50k for a big time commercial but only spend $500 to do it. Seriously awesome work, though. Especially with those neon animations. 🙌🏻🤘🏻
What a fucking creative video!!! You always surprise with you creative mind. I would've loved it more if you had showed the music part as well. That music track fits perfectly. I wanna know your mind behind it ❤️
Did Hayden forget to include his own time in the budget? I think that this just proves the point about what’s wrong with the whole Artists dilemma. Yes, everybody consumes art, but it’s usually the middlemen, the platforms - not the artists getting rewarded.
Hayden, your editing breakdowns have been a huge help with starting my channel. Thanks a lot and keep’em coming! Would love to see you commenting over a typical talking head channel’s video (Graham Stephan, Ali Abdaal…) Looking forward to your next video!!

THIS IS SO IMPRESSIVE! I’m definitely going to take inspiration for my upcoming RUclips video. I am really starting to love editing as more of an art form instead of just busy work like you said! Thanks!
Having worked with many high profile channels, the moment a RUclipsr starts seeing editing as art and not busy-work is always the biggest game changer to their content. It is a little known "RUclips hack" I am trying to get more people aware of. The fact you are becoming aware of this early on will have a huge return on investment! Happy editing!

All in all it's a nice demonstration for non-professionals. But the final product does not have ANYTHING in common with any Apple commercial. So in the end it would be important to focus on WHY those commercials actually cost a lot of money! Stock Footage is gold for people working in our field but it's not the panacea and this is why the final video looks cheap and it looks like a random patchwork. Plus you are not talking about the cost of your work hours that is sharing a wrong message with the public and thus with the people who pays for this kind of products!
The audio clipping in the voice over, and the audio quality of the voice over in general, sounds like a sub-$500 commercial. The visuals are $1m, for sure, but if audio is 50% of video...
