I’m serious when I say, learning about Lickd was worth the watch by itself. I love when creators provide something of value within their ads. The rest of the video is great too 😁 thanks!!
This Super Thanks amount comes nowhere close to the value you gave ME in this video as I try to pivot my channel into exactly what you described! Wish I could afford to work with you! You are a freakin' genius! Like, how in the world would I EVER find an editor as genius as you!??!
Duuuuudee your perspective on videos is always so refreshing to see! Can’t wait to see how upcoming creators are affected by your style/thoughts. Definitely feel like a lot of content is rinsed and repeated on yt
I absolutely love these kinds of collabs. Always a goldmine. I think something you do Hayden better than almost anyone else on RUclips, is finding ways to really bring out emotion and character in an edit, through very deliberate videography/storytelling. Where you collaborate with big creators is always the most fascinating, because you’re not going through just the basics of editing, but giving a view into the abstract principles of storytelling - whilst using concrete tactics to describe how they’re done. Again, banger video, can’t wait for more.
I love how Zach just listens and understands throughout without doubting any of hillier's advices, thats what makes him a really good content creator and helps him go to the top with lots of improvements. Hillier never dissapoints anyone with his work and etc!🔥
You need to make this a series with more creators videos man … your editing skills and insights which u share with us are amazing 🔥💯 Thanks for making me better in my editing 🔥
Your videos never disappoint! The detailed tutorials, clear comparisons, and brilliant showcases of sound design and storytelling are incredibly helpful. Thanks for the insightful and well-explained content.
2 questions. Are we getting a full breakdown? (same as the Airrack one) and 2, is there any way to make a story that interesting that you created in the end without planning it before shooting? Thanks a lot 🙌🏻
Hayden has covered this topic in other videos and I believe this is how he would respond. He would say it is incredibly important to storyboard your video before shooting. If you don’t storyboard and plan you are shooting video haphazardly. Storyboarding allows you to plan your shots and be more efficient. That being said you should still leave room for flexibility. If you are shooting in real time and their is new information provided you can either fit it into the existing storyboard or rewrite the whole thing completely.
Great Video! but i cant help but notice @ 9:29 that Hilliers audio level skyrockets right at the end of him saying "change" The editors curse of unconsciously noticing things that seem off 😂
That was dope! Storytelling is the most important part of any motion picture and Hillier has a strong sense of it. But wouldn't the idea for the video presented be more like a feature film with the 3 act? 😀
I don't normally leave comments, but I just had to say that this video has COMPLETELY changed the way I think about editing. I'm really excited to apply all of the things I've learned here!! Thanks for sharing, guys. :)
Just how RUclips has content that'll teach you how to change your oil or fix a patch on your drywall... it also provides these gems. Thank you very much.
This is the most helpful video on telling story I have ever seen! SHOWING the section on changing the “steaks” was an amazing a-ha moment! THANK YOU Hayden!!!

Serious question: Do you think this style of editing (Mr. Beast style subtitles, camera movement, etc.) are overkill for a language teaching channel? 😅😅
Try it out and ask for feedback. Mr beast style is designed for a young audience. Copy some of it but try your own stile. The most important thing is that you idetify with your style as a person.
It gets really hard to explain to big creators why narration matters and it is not just about giving away tons of money but the way you expressed that is just op
That story you made up was insane. My Attention got laser glued to the plot. Going to try and implement some of that story element into my videos. Thanks man!
As artists trying to create engaging videos about our art this video was super helpful! The notes about repetitive montages OMG!! We totally relate to the challenge of finding the best way to show process (especially processes that take hours, days, sometimes months to complete) in an engagement way. Thanks also for showing the value of finding the story!
Thank you for making this video. A good editor is life changing. As a director / DP editing has always been super hard especially when it comes to my own reel. Your idea for an alt version to the video was baller.
I have learned so much from "this guy edits" about rhythm but always felt a gap b/w movies editing vs RUclips editing one and you complete that so well ! Thanks mate
Your videos have been crazy educational but that ad was actually mind blowing lol when I first started watching and heard Oliver Tree I was like how tf is this dude not getting copyrighted
Perhaps the best video about editing I have ever seen before. You don’t learn from watching top editors, who showcase their art. You learn from “tear downs” like this, and seeing what does not work to its full extent, and how you can make it work even better ❤👍👍
I love that I knew the Murder my Darlings was coming when he loved the Drone Shot. Happy to see this upload back again with the best editing content on the platform! Cheers Hillier
I really liked the pitch! It was cool to have Hayden rewrite the video from scratch, not just edit segment by segment (although it was really cool as well).
I'm an editor myself and the way you broke that down made my jar drop bro 😮, theres levels to this game theres a lot I have to learn but gonna watch more of your videos to get more inspo and tips appreciate your work man!
Hillier’s perspective is so unique. Its like when an English Teacher goes off on a rant about symbolism from this sentence and what it means. And your like “…oh”
Amazing breakdown, your ability to put yourself into the viewer's shoes and fully understand how they feel whilst watching certain clips is amazing & refreshing to say the least. Do more of these!
"Giveaways" are quite tricky Hiller. The question of effectiveness is subject to what the intention or goal of the giveaway is. Thank you for the videos, you're shaping us creators and I love it. I look forward to working with you soon enough.
Insane how the little plan at the end was more entertaining than the actual video.. I mean that in the nicest way but it’s so true how much the emotion and character impacts the video
God I really love these editing breakdowns Like I keep trying to study bigger RUclipsrs videos but it It so hard to learn some of this stuff! Syllables?! Like I would ever even think of that, but it makes so much sense when you think of it
Thoroughly enjoyed this video. Lickd was very open and humble. And we learned a lot of good pointers! We like how, instead of theory alone, it showed the differences if the principles were applied!
Wow, I love that in this video you laid out a story for ZHC about the school, but this video itself was a story: rather than just saying change this, change this, you delved into ZHC's struggles and interests. Basically you mixed a HillerSmith video with a Colin and Samir video. Love love love!!
On your "stay or leave" VFX, try using a red arrow inside the yellow circle, the arrow could change direction depending on where its heading. White and yellow are not great at creating contrast, the ball gets kind of lost because of the background.
I was one who lost interest in this specific video of ZHC, but powered through…I am so glad you taught him these things! How you think of them blow my mind. Props to you!
The value in this video is just...incredible. So happy that I stumbled across your channel this morning! (and discovering Lickd is a goddamn revelation). Thank you!
