Most of these sound really silly. At least one ended up being useful and now lots of people use it: FBF. "Traditional" on its own implies paper and pencil are used, and "digital" is too broad to mean much (digital could be tweened, puppeted, mesh warped, hand-drawn, rotoscoped, 3D/2D hybrid, 3D with shaders that make it look 2D, or auto generated by AI).
As animation tools evolve we need new words to describe things.

Yeah, that's right, I'm a double-time FBF fullbody real animator, and I've mastered the circle theory of motion 😎
When I started out animating and learning online I absolutely saw a lot of these terms, and I also animated at 29.97fps since that was television frame rate, so I thought it was the "right one" haha

I thought frame by frame animation was a common term. I've heard cell animation too

same, although a lot of ppl i hung out with were also from the flash scene or learned from folks in the scene, so it might be something that lingered
it's funny how that's the only one i knew about though

They are. Frame-by-frame refers to animating traditionally, drawing each frame. Cell animation refers to the process of painting on clear cellophane and then putting it over backgrounds to create animation that way.

Few years ago when I was in college, our animation teachers used the term 'Frame By Frame' when referring to traditional style done digitally, and of course 'traditional' when we would do it by hand on paper.
As someone who spent a lot of time hanging around newgrounds way back, I always loved coming across people who have started out there and ended up working in studios or grow big and continue to do their own things.

Hey Toniko. I'm guessing that the online animation community during the mid 2000s is like what happened at Disney during the early 1930s. They're all young, learning from each other and coming up with terminologies in order to perfect their craft.

LMAO the fucking "circle theory of motion" made me laugh out loud. I petition that we change the word "arc" to this from now on

I still know people who gasp in awe when I say "I'm a frame - by - frame animator". In professional circles though, I use the term "traditional Animator". It was super fun to hear other terminologies. My favorite in this video was Single, Double and Triple time animation! 😂

You know, it's interesting to me that the mid 2000s were like that, especially since I remember that was around the time I actually cared about the difference between Anime and Cartoon. Animation... was definitely underground, and I remember leaning towards Anime because I felt a sense of respect for the medium in a serialized format. I also feel I had the misconception of western animation being lazy in comparison... when funny enough lately I yearn for more Anime adopting more western elements at times.
I don't know when exactly my opinions started to become more balanced. Avatar definitely helped, but I don't think it was until Gravity Falls where I actually got my Anime friends into something western. It's been nice to see people talk about animation more and more over the years.
We're now at an age where you didn't need to pira--err... purchase Flash to do basic digital animation at home. I remember when I wanted to do things free, Pencil2D was the best bet and... it wasn't that great. I remember it crashing a lot, and I also remember not liking how it handled colors. There was also the Nintendo DS's flipbook which honestly is still a great program... which makes it all the more frustrating we in the west didn't get the 3DS version. Now there's Krita, OpenToonz (My current baby), and Blender of all things to make not only okay animation, but great animation. There's probably even more free animation programs I don't even know about. Even art tablets are relatively cheap, which opens a lot more opportunity for new artists.
It's incredible to think it's barely been a couple decades for this major shift.

In 3d scene we had a lot of made up terms as well. For example, I used to call Animation Retargeting technique a "inspired animation transfer". Self toughts have a thing for inventing new funny names for existing stuff))

I think a lot of people still know nothing about animation terminology and obsess over software. Its hard to watch any animation streams because the person gets 500 questions about software.

I studied animation at university and our traditional animation tutor could not get his head around the term “frame by frame” as “it’s not frame by frame, sometimes it’s on 1’s and sometimes it’s on 2’s, where did you all get this term from??” or something like that, and he would get cross and tell us off for calling it that xD to be fair he was taught by Richard Williams himself so probably had the same kind of teachings hammered into him lol

I don't think he term "frame-by-frame" is dying out at all. Not too long ago, when I was interested in logo animation and other animation courses by schools like motion design school or school of motion, they commonly used that term.
I guess it was in a different context tho...since logo animation and character animation are quite different (even though the principles are the same).

O! I love internet history of the 2000's! As somebody who was too young to create stuff but old enough to use the internet at the time I find it super interesting to go back and look at that stuff. I especially remember Alan Becker being like the top tier god of animation back then

Sometimes I wonder if I would have pivoted towards cutout animation styles if it wasn't for how problematic I found the tweening workflow to be... So... lacking the skills to do the "easy" style I always prefer working in the traditional way. I just find it a bit ironic that people who do go for that full redraw per frame are considered "god tier" when it probably in many cases, like for me... I just couldn't figure out the alternative.

I'm surprised you didn't add the word "animations" to the list, as in "those are some great animations". It, like many on your list, seemed to be a term that came up during the Flash animation era, but never used by anyone (that I know of) before then. There is no 's' when describing animation. It's always singular, never plural.
