I still remember the original Akuma legacy where in X-Men children of the atom all max did was spam the air fire ball because the AI was just blocking everything
bruh, i remember the first time i saw akuma in xmen vs streetfighter i was like 12 i had no idea he was in it and someones dad was playing as him and he even finished with the raging demon, my mind was blown to the stratosphere 😂
Akuma was the one that got me into street fighter, I remember trying it so many times and it never clicked for me. Then I tried SF4 Akuma and I fell in love with fighting games.
I remember in the SF2 anime movie you actually see Akuma chilling in the background randomly and even then you're thinking, "that character looks way too detailed to just be some random passerby."
What I find so intriguing about Akuma in later games, is how he sees fighting. To him, fighting is a religion, and respecting the art is more important than anything. Should an opponent he faces has an unfair advantage he will spare a person that respects martial arts like him and can improve. In a way he sort of became an unwanted mentor figure to Ryu. His nature and ambitions are often misunderstood. He is NOT a generic bad guy, but a warrior that holds to a code of honor with morals. Now make no mistake he’s no less of a bad guy, and I’m not going to say his actions are justified, I’m just offering an interesting side to the character. And it’s not just in Street Fighter but in Tekken 7, Akuma reveals to Heihachi he was sent by Kasumi to kill him and Kazuya. When Heihachi questions: “If you were sent to kill me, why wait until now?” Akuma answers: “I was merely waiting for you to become stronger.” Akuma is many things, but you can’t say he isn’t honorable.
One thing I miss about old games: the secrets. Having these stipulations and the like to even *see* a guy just heightened their mystique. I wish more modern titles threw in a mystery character again...
I can only imagine all the hushed whispers in arcades, playgrounds and break rooms about that one person who somehow came across terrifying secret final boss back in the day.
Akuma is the OG secret super boss. Just a mysterious fighter, known as "????????", just whoops your ass real quick and collects your quarters. He just crashes the tournament once he finds strong fighter, and thats ryu. Basically kills bison, and just wants a true fight to the death with strong opponents.
Max talking about people in arcades walking away if a player chooses akuma just reminds me of the old arcades in Brazil having signs saying something like "Picking Rugal not allowed" or something to that effect.
I still remember seeing the select code for him in an issue of Game Informer, only owning SSF2, not the Turbo version, not getting it to work, and thinking it was another one of those joke unlocks, like "How to unlock Shen Long."
I swear, people whine and bitch about videogame journalism now but don't remember how much of a pig pen some magazines were in the 90s, some straight up lied with false cheat codes and more shit like that.
@@fordesponja Mortal Kombat is probably to blame for that lol. I don't think the whole "SHENG LONG IS A CHARACTER, YOU JUST GOTTA UNLOCK HIM" stuff took off until Reptile in MK1 was a thing and publications like EGM started printing stuff like "how to fight Ermac".
I didn't grow up during the Arcade days, but the whole mystery of Akuma has to be one of the most amazing arcade legacies of all time. Like, imagine accidentally doing the code and playing this character that nobody knew about and all of the sudden people from around the arcade crowd around you like you discovered the Fountain of Youth. It's incredible.
8:03 I watched Justin Wong do a playthrough of this, and lost a single round, but as he went to Dictator, Akuma still showed up. So no, a round loss doesn't count against Akuma, as long as you don't use a continue.
Say what you will about the other SF characters, but Akuma is easily the most iconic character in this series. From being a secret cheat code in arcades & still gets players hyped to this day
Nah, going with Ryu on this one. Every time a new 2D fighter drops the first thought is who has the Ryu moveset. Akuma having the same basics is besides the point.
He's definitely the most iconic secret character in fighting game history... well, maybe Reptile could claim that since he was the very original secret character, but I think Akuma wins the crown. I still love my lizardboi, though.
Mentioning Akuma's air fireball spam reminds me of a particular scene in Hi Score Girl...managed to make a ridiculously dramatic scene, entirely about spamming them over and over.
From someone who started playing fighting games around the start of the final season of sf5 because of Akuma its fascinating to hear the stories and mystery behind his debut.
watching this on stream and seeing chat talk about how hard the AI is and even Max getting annoyed by it makes me feel kinda proud that I was able to beat it as a newcomer to fighting games. and then I look back and see it took me nearly 5 hours...
Man, I remember playing the GBA version (SF2 Turbo Revival) and I fought Shin Akuma for the first time. I got WRECKED, dude!!! He spams fireballs, teleports waaaay faster than regular Akuma and has a screen-to-screen ranged Raging Demon which, by the way, is super fast. And did I mention that his recovery was bonkers? And if I remember correctly, he can't be stunned as well.

How Akuma came to be is a very interesting story, it started with an April fools article from EGM about a secret end boss called sheng long, rumors about that had spread like wild fire among the fandom inspired Capcom to actually create a secret end boss and Akuma was the result of that.
My first secret fight ever was in Mortal Kombat on SNES. I randomly had to Reptile and thought he was the coolest character. At the time, I didn't know how I got to him. I couldn't replicate until 5 months later when my cousin found out how to challenge him.

Akuma was one helluva inclusion in SF and the other games back then. Him being a secret in CotA and Alpha 1 just added more to the mistique surrounding him. BUT his inclusion in X-Men CotA, wasn't the first crossover, SNK beat Capcom to the punch earlier by adding Ryo from Art of Fighting as a secret boss in Fatal Fury Special, then a younger Geese became the secret boss in Art of Fighting 2 in 94 as well, in fact it made both games part of the same canon in a really cool way. Not too long after those crossovers we had the first KoF.

Good question, from what I recall, Reptile was a secret fight in MK1 but not selectable. Excluding the Vs series. I personally think Street Fighter Alpha has the best version of Akuma. That is the first version that has the demon flip. Akuma is my favorite because he’s a bad guy but not a villain. He’s not out to out right murder for no reason, not be strong enough to rule the world or whatever. He just wants to be stronger than his mortal body and he takes fights too seriously that most end in the death
I had ST on my 3DO back in the day, and when I got to the end with Ken and Akuma came out and killed Bison before the match started I completely lost my collective shit. I had no idea whatsoever what I did differently to make him appear. Found out later it was just not losing a match. What an awesome surprise it was back then. And I like how Capcom put up the code to play as Akuma after beating him and letting the credits run. Also, I found that when using him the AI is a sucker for getting hit by his three hit Fireball standing up after a hard knockdown.
SFII Turbo is currently what is seated into my Super Nintendo in my living room. Love this game. Found it in my local Pawn Shop for $10. Was an immediate buy
oh god. I was very lucky to have ST for 3DO during 90's here in Brazil. Remember one day when I was around 9 years old and skipped school to play it all morning, from 08am until noon, non stop with the game's max speed. I literally puked all afternoon after that experience
There is just something amazing when you finally meet the conditions (which is really hard to do, it almost felt like someone doing a joke to make you suffer) and you see him come across the screen and take out M Bison. M GODDAMN BISON. And then it's like NAH you fight me and the air fireball and.. just.. damn. Akuma was something else.
Does anyone else remember shin akuma in ST? I’m sure there was some wonder kid who would come in back in 1997 and do a variation of the akuma code to get the double fireball variant
I loved Akuma so much as a secret character boss I got his Kanji tattoo’d on my arm way back in 2004 on the day of my 18th birthday with my dad. He passed in 2022 😢 RIP dad
Fun fact: In Dreamcast Super Turbo, you can use a ingame DIP Switch to give Akuma a Super meter. And his super is the Raging Demon. HD Remix flashbacks, anyone?
I remember watching the Chun Li fight on twitch a couple of days ago when this started, and boy was she a NIGHTMARE to deal with. Like watching a mini- Boss Rage.
If the Akuma legacy was so good, why isn’t there a Super Akuma Legacy II Turbo?

Lol Super Akuma Legacy II Turbo X Hyper Champion Edition 2nd Strike

It literally killed people and couldn’t finish it. Cuz it was that good.
It was so good no one wanted to try making a sequel because it was impossible to follow up on that.

I remember that it was painful to watch not because of max but because of the AI
Not to mention the version he was playing made Akuma way weaker so he could barely do any damage outside of throwing fireballs.
Akuma was PAINFULLY bad in that game, or as Max called him, “this beta-ass beta character”.

M GODDAMN BISON. And then it's like NAH you fight me and the air fireball and.. just.. damn. Akuma was something else.
i wish that ultra sf2 would get rereleased on pc and have usable online there
As long time akuma main I can’t wait for SF6 akuma
I think the first time I saw Akuma in a game was X- Men vs Street Fighter. So cool
He's in so many games, this is gonna be so good. Watching both.
Does anyone else remember shin akuma in ST? I’m sure there was some wonder kid who would come in back in 1997 and do a variation of the akuma code to get the double fireball variant
Oh man, the original Akuma Legacy is one of my favorites from you.
Already excited for the next episode! 😁
Me and my friends had no idea Akuma existed until the motion picture game in arcades
IIRC Akuma was in the X-men game as part of a joke concerning ST's japanese name: SSF X or such, hence Akuma is a X-man
I loved Akuma so much as a secret character boss I got his Kanji tattoo’d on my arm way back in 2004 on the day of my 18th birthday with my dad. He passed in 2022 😢 RIP dad
Fun fact: In Dreamcast Super Turbo, you can use a ingame DIP Switch to give Akuma a Super meter. And his super is the Raging Demon.
HD Remix flashbacks, anyone?
Thats Tien Akuma
@@antiseize11 there are 3 Akumas. Regular Akuma, boss Akuma and Shin Akuma
@@angelriverasantana7755 Right, but Boss and Shin are literally the same
@@antiseize11 different colors, actually. And Shin has more moves from the Alpha games
I hear that max is using the 8 bit vgm version of Akuma's theme I love that remix
Yo the art is so sick! 🔥
Man it's good that SF2 Turbo came out. Strange that it was the first Street fighter game and they started it at 2 turbo huh?
I didn''t understand what you're saying
Dam, Max, that intro tho! Super sick!!!
Shin Akuma is also on the GBA Turbo Revival game
I remember watching the Chun Li fight on twitch a couple of days ago when this started, and boy was she a NIGHTMARE to deal with. Like watching a mini- Boss Rage.
Akuma being a fusion of Ryu & Ken is not too farfatched. He inherited Ryu's hadoken & ken's 3 hit combo shoryuken AND Ken's shoryureppa😆

Can’t wait for another SVC Chaos video. Such a badass and underrated game.

Akuma was the equivalent of something picking Smoke in MKII or MKIII. A major pain in the ass especially MKIII Smoke OP asf.
still find it super interesting how the only version of SFII Akuma that has the raging demon is locked to the Dreamcast Matching Service version.
