  • The faithful old van failed its MOT test on a very common fault, "Offside steering Track rod end worn"....simple fix, and cheap, but one that many people wont tackle....here's how easy it is.

    Wow, you have to be the first mechanic I've seen use a torque wrench. Major respect to you guys caring about your customers vehicles.

    FANTASTIC VIDEO MATE. SIMPLE TO UNDERSTAND AND WELL EXPLAINED. KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK.

    Cheers for the reply mate! I'll check tyre pressures tomorrow and then get tracking checked if it still pulls to the left. And thumbs up for the video, I always thought replacing a track rod end would be more complicated than it actually is. Keep up the good work mate :)

    100nm for steel wheels and 110nm for alloy's on the bolts just for you reference :)
    this is a great vid and will be doing mine at the weekend thanks for the info on getting tracking back in as close as possible

    when i did this on my mustang it was a hell of a job since everything was stuck together, it was 100+ degrees outside and my car is lowered 2 inches.
    but it was worth it no mere weird noises when turning.and didn't have to pay someone to do it
    which is always nice to learn and save money at the same time.

    Hi mate, no, track rod ends just rattle and clatter as they go along and could cause vibration in the steering, but pulling to the left could be a number of things, tracking badly out, a wheel bearing gone (will also vibrate) or possibly even a flat tyre ... run it into Kwikfit, get them to do a tracking check first (after you've checked the tyre pressures) Good Luck!

    Thanks mate....but that's my van, got to take tyhe trouble to do it right aye.. thanks for watching.. Del.

    @turbocobra Hi Gary, no they were just nylock nuts, i was a bit surprised to find that and not a castle nut.. so just for safety (which i didnt show on the video) i smack a cold chisel strike into the protruduing thread under the nut so that it cannot wind itself off.. thanks for your kind comments buddy, keep up the good work on the Mustang of doom.... take care... Del.

    Thanks mate, it could be a few things, but 'Ball Joint'; sounds most likely...if its creaking it usually means a metal to metal face is rubbing..and that in turn means its obviously dry...so see if there are any grease nipples on your suspension system, and get a grease gun in there to see if that can eliminate it..other than that its hard to diagnose it on here.. ive never had that so cant say from experience what it might be..only what i might look at and try to trace it...good luck mate, Del

    @MrSPAS1200 Exactly that, to fix your own vehicle if you can not only saves you money, but also teaches you a bity about it, and what gets fixed early and on time, doesnt lead to a breakdown...my wife drives that van, and its very important that its totally safe.... cheers mate.. Del.

    I think the nut on the end of the track rod is 19mm (3/4") and I believe the one to wind the rod end off is a little smaller, maybe 17mm ... you'll need to check, mate

    @pleasetakemynamenow Thanks mate, the taper is really easy, even without a splitter, just crack the cast steel ring that the taper sits in, hard with a 2lb hammer, and it will jump right out.. never had a problem with one... and even if you do,. that tool i bought does it real easy first time and cost me just £9. take care.. Del.

    Great stuff as always, we need to lose the fears before taking to the shop, what they do we can do it too. I have a same job to do it too. Some are fanatics when theirs teams losses, I'm fanatic when my vehicles don't pass on the MOT, I go mental!!!

    @Rasd4Metta Thanks Rob, i think it has a few names, Tie rod makes sense, Track rod because its the end of the rod that you adust to set the tracking, and even heard it called "steering knickle".... same thing.. and yeah, every year inspectionm once the car is 3 years old... great aye..pfft.. ! cheers buddy...

  • @Rasd4Metta
    @Rasd4Metta 12 лет назад

    Nice job buddy! We call them tie rod ends, never heard them referred to as trac end lol I can't beleave you have to get MOT every year, we only need safety checks when you first buy the car, but the big commercial vehicles have to get them once a year
    Take care my friend

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 лет назад

    If you clobbered the wheel in a bump, then yeah, you could well have bent it...its better to do the lot while you're under there than mess about chaning just one side...its not hard and not expensive.. so get stuck in and have a go....make sure you get the traking checked and adjusted properly bedfore you use it in the road daily...!!! good luck with it.. cheers, Del.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 лет назад

    Hi mate, first check your tyre pressure (thats free), then i would maybe get the front wheels balanced, (you may have lost a wheel wieght), thats the cheapest one to eliminate, if it persists, and as you say "its under braking" then think about checking for warped discs, and other deeper issues, but i would imagine its a wheel weight, get a tyre shop to do a full front end balance and tracking setup, worth the money as it will always save you a bit of fuel if its all rolling straight. good luck.

    After watching your video, decided to have a go at changing the track rod end on my fiat multipla. Can't get the lock nut undone and there's no hex on the inner rod to stop it from turning. Absolute nightmare! Looks like I'll have to take to a garage!

    • @Moonfleet41
      @Moonfleet41  10 лет назад

      Never mind mate, you've lost nothing as you would have had to take it there in the first place, and at least you had a go... the garage will undo it with an impact gun, which is not something most households have.. thanks for watching

    Can you upload more videos with vauxhalls if have any?

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 лет назад

    Each end of the steering rack you have an adjustable rod that connects to the bottom of the suspension leg so that when you turn the wheel the steering rack moves side to side and the rod pushes the wheel left or right... the rod, being adjustable, is used to set the track of the wheels so they both face in the same direction (or slightly toed in to be exact)... therefore this is the 'track rod' and on the end of it is a ball joint to allow it to swivel, this is known as the track rod end ok?

    Nice Demo sir. Good to see a video from DelBoys Garage! Awesome camera work to by Mrs. Moofleet! btw, Did your ride not have castle nuts and cotter pins (split pins as you call them)?

  • @pleasetakemynamenow

    good work. Done that a couple of times you're lucky that taper just popped out... Have said many ugly words getting those out before. :)

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 лет назад

    @danbethel Sounds like you guys have it easy buddy, once its 3 years old every 12 months you must submit your vehicle to a testing station for a full MOT inspection, takes about an hour, they test every steering and suspension component, (linkages, bushes, bearings, dampers, plus load bearing body and chassis structure, (for rust) tyres, brakes, glass, wipers, lights, horn, exhaust all of it..AND there is the emmissions test you have too. and if you're caught without it, they can crush your car.

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  11 лет назад

    yes it can, it can also leas to a loss of steering control if it snaps off....but if you feel vibration "under your seat" it could just be a wheel weight missing..(the can drop off in time with pot holes etc)....
    Why not drop in to your local 'Kwik Fit' p;ace to get a free steering and brake check, tell them what you are experiencing and they at least diagnose it for you properly....then you can decide what to do about it...
    Good luck with it mate..
    Del.

    Hi mate, not sure if light steering is a straight of track rod ends...that would make the steering wander and wobble, the steering wheel would feel as if it has play, perhaps if your steering is light, the tyres are too hard, are the pressures right?. hard ot diagnose without seeing it. but why not check them both anyway.

    Hey, nice job and thanks for posting this, but I have a stupid question for you... my car when I'm braking from around 60-55mph the steering wheel begins to wobble a little bit. Any idea what makes it do that or just normal? Chevy Impala '10

  • @TynesideMadman

    Hi Del, my mk4 astra pulls to the left when driving, is this because it needs a new track rod end?

  • @Moonfleet41
    @Moonfleet41  12 лет назад

    @danbethel Exactly, and its worse than that, even if you want to have an old car and not use it on the road, you must make a 'SORN' (Statement of Offroad Notification), otherwise you get fined, and again, they can crush it....its Big brother illuminati ensuring that old cars get scrapped by the owners choosing to junk them rather than repair them for cost reasons, then the car makers sell more new cars, makes more tax pounds, and keeps the suits and the Arabs rich...nobody's free these days mate

    You cant properly diagnose car faults by a noise.....could be a number of things, drop link bush, tie rod end, anti roll bar etc etc... if its beyond your skill buddy why not run it into a garage for a look up on the ramp......better safe than sorry..

    @danbethel yeah right, it be easier if i was Iraqi, English people are about as welcome in the US as a turd in a swimming pool, least thats how your government sees it. we're excluded from the green card lottery, getting a visa is harder than getting into the Vatican, ok for holidays, but try and move there?, forget it buddy, its a joke. the only 'special relationship' is one played out in the news, the only glimmer of freindliness comes from real people and youtube friends here. shame ha?
