    The “train blocking road for nine hours” is about 15 seconds from my house. Those tracks run behind it. It’s a pretty common occurrence there as there’s a little over a mile between that level crossing and the next. It’s the mainline into Indianapolis and one of the last large stops before the city. The others get clogged, so this one gets blocked. Fun stuff!

    I feel in order to improve our rail infrastructure, especially for passenger service, they should receive *a lot* more dedicates funding from state and federal governments (something Biden is trying to do but is often met with political opposition), or privately fund companies like Brightline who could receive much more private investment than the government will.

    Yes, bring back the timetable! Having airline style "it gets there when it gets there" attitudes towards this mode of transport is by all means *BAD* when it comes to incentivizing passengers.
    Likewise, a rant for freight railroads - bring back terminal railroads! Your whole shtick on PSR ain't mean shit when the locomotives meant to pull those cars to the destination have to set up the train themselves! And perhaps you could take some looks at upgrading your railcar designs for higher speeds; Amtrak easily accomplished this with priority mail and piggyback freight in the early 90s, if y'all are gonna wax poetic about DPUs allowing you to function more as a "freight as a service" company with PSR, perhaps upgrading frame or bogie design could help provide you more functionality for higher speed freights without sacrificing efficiency or safety.
    Heck, maybe the best way to do that is just make the trains shorter and run more often. Flexibility is the major benefit of railroads compared to other mediums of transport, so focusing hard on train length and carload velocity at specific hours isn't going to help drive new customers to the system due to them missing a date from any number of issues setting up cars for classification and movement. BNSF manages to compete extremely well against other PSR-adopting railroads not by following suit, but by improving the basic systems it runs on! More reliable locomotives, more general upkeep on cars, keeping good track on headcount and line usage gives a much better capability to provide faster and more consistent service, without killing thousands of jobs and increasing danger by reducing inspections.

    • @5hartington
      @5hartington 3 года назад +5

    Great information. Having a place at Lake McConaughy I've been saying for years that they need to put in no train horn crossings to make the place more enjoyable to camp at and so those that have cabins next to the tracks don't have to be blasted multiple times a day. Your explanation helps make sense of it. My place is far enough away that it doesn't affect me and I actually love hearing them chug along in the distance when the wind is blowing the right direction. I'm high enough too that you can see the entire length of it that looks like a model train set. 👍

      Awesome lol. Yeah that would get old if you were closer. Fortunately I’m far enough away from the Nebraska City line in Lincoln to not really be affected either, but I totally sympathize with the people that live close to it. I can see Lincoln converting a few like 27th and 40th, but I sincerely doubt they’re gonna do all 11 lol. I think just the study was going to cost $200k.

      @@TheFourFoot I grew up on Stonecliffe Dr back when there was alot more trains everyday and loved it. As teenagers we even got to see the inside of the caboose one time after talking to the workers for a while, and then the train started moving and you could hear the slack being taken out of the cars so we held on and had to jump out with it moving. No way that happens no days. Lol.
      Seeing how quiet zones are set up at other crossings in town it blows me away they would cost that much considering every main intersection from Pine Lake to Pioneers Boulevard has medians, so wouldn't pylons/dividers be the only thing left to add to keep people from going around the arms? The Ready Mix Concrete entrance, Southwood Dr, and Calvert St would be a different story with how those crossings are set up. 70th and 84th are too but far away enough where it wouldn't affect as many people.

    • @TheFourFoot
      @TheFourFoot  3 года назад +1

      I’m sure that was fun! You’re right about the medians of those crossings, and the crossing on north 70th, just south of cornhusker is very similar to those. It doesn’t have the slightly higher square medians that make it impossible for cars to drive over that are often mandated for quiet zones. My biggest complaint is that if a study is done and new raised/square medians are deemed necessary for quiet zones, they why weren’t those installed when the crossings were rebuilt, considering nearly all the crossings on that line in Lincoln were rebuilt within the last few years. I have noticed that 84th was recently rebuilt with this new median, after trains started running again. I know the city doesn’t want to spend money on things if they don’t have to, but this just seems a bit short sighted. I would imagine the crossing at 56th/old Cheney may have to have automatic warning devices installed like the Adams street crossing, but you’re right many of the crossings could probably be done fairly cheaply. I think the largest cost is engineering/insurance costs behind the scenes.

    The solution for the chaotic national rail infrastructure in the USA, is for the Federal Government to acquire all the track infrastructure (track, bridges, tunnels, stations, signalling, and train control) from the freight rail companies and create a federal 'not for profit' open access entity to maintain and upgrade the federal rail infrastructure as a federal strategic 'steel highway' public asset for all freight and passenger train operators to use. If Australia being a similar land mass size to the USA can do it through ARTC (Australian Rail Track Corporation) being a federal funded entity in association with the respective state government own operations.

      The most problematic crossings have already been removed. There are still tens of thousands from crossings across the country that haven’t. Except in a few places like Los Angeles, Silicon Valley, and New York, most states/cities would have to implement a tax to raise money to remove crossings en mass, and it simply isn’t a big enough priority for most people to want to pay for it.

    Quiet zones are obviously a good thing. The whole ‘you knew the tracks were there when you moved in’ argument is stupid. Somebody will live near tracks that run through a city or town. Unless cities decide to allow no houses or apartments to be built like two miles on either side of a rail line, noise will be an issue for whoever does live there. That line of argumentation basically amounts to ‘I don’t care about the fact that the quality of life of people living near tracks is impacted by the noise’ when there is no reason railroads should not have to do something to mitigate their noise pollution. They have the money. They were often given the land for free by the US government. They need to be held accountable. Noise pollution is still a major problem on much more advanced rail networks, eg along Shinkansen lines so it’s also not a uniquely American problem, just that the US rail industry and regulators do very little to address it.

    • @TheFourFoot
      @TheFourFoot  3 года назад +2

      Yeah people that like hearing train whistles and then vote against quiet zones/grade separations is essentially the same thing as people wanting to live in the country and then actively work to keep feedlots/chicken farms/windmills. “I’m a sociopath, but I want a hand in how society is built because I want it to benefit me...”

      meh i dont mind the quiet zones but if something happens like a car accident its 100% the city's fault

      ...unless there’s anything wrong with the crossing equipment. But yes, cities have to take on liability when implementing quiet zones.
