Children On Railroad Diamonds Get Horn Blasts From CSX High Rail Truck! Marion Ohio Trains On CSX

- Children were playing on the busy CSX mainline tracks when a track inspector came along. The high rail truck blasted his horn at them. Minutes later a huge mixed freight crosses the railroad diamonds next to Marion Union Station. Look how long these trains are since CSX started using Precision Scheduled Railroading PSR! These trains are huge! The downfall is that these monster trains are costing jobs. The July, 2021 issue of Trains Magazine has an in depth article about the loss of jobs due to PSR. Total employee loss due to PSR from Feb 2017 to Dec 2020 is 26%. This figure comes from the loss of jobs for major U.S. railroads which includes CSX, Norfolk Southern and Union Pacific. PSR is a cost cutting tool for the railroads but it costs jobs and reduces the amount of trains for us railfans. This video was recorded in Marion, Ohio. Thanks for watching! Do any of y'all play music? Maybe that sound could be part of a background thing.
I remember playing on the B&O tracks as a kid. We once had a train stop and a couple guys got out of the caboose and half heartedly look for us.
As a train loving kid, I was ecstatic when my dad bought his first home on Wiseburn St in Hawthorne CA. Next to it is one of the last local lines of its kind (that I know of) that still exist in LA. Starts in downtown and ends at the Chevron plant in El Segundo. That was in 1991. I'm still ecstatic when I housesit for them while they go on cruises. 9:45a every morning through the South Bay - hard to imagine. My point of this rant was my buddy and I jumped on a cpl of those and rode them to the next block for giggles. We never got caught :)
Imagine hearing that noise near your house for 10-15 min at a time. Loudest crossovers.

When I was in Boy Scouts, the Scoutmaster advised us all to NEVER go for a hike along railroad tracks - he said we could get plenty of attention from police.

I've had attention from police when I was waiting at a pedestrian crossing gate. She stopped, got out of her cruiser and came over to tell me to stay off of the tracks. I said, “You, too. That uniform doesn't impress a train.”
She said, “Don't get smart with me.”
I responded, “Go away and leave me alone. You don't get any points for telling me not to do what I was already not doing. This is a designated legal pedestrian crossing point.”
She got in her cruiser and left. Probably some Nosey Nellie had called the cops to claim that I was playing on the tracks. At 55 years old!!
@Rogeball PB ... IMO, sticking up for yourself, even in a sarcastic and a little obnoxious manner, doesn't mean someone fits that mindset - it just means they don't like dealing with stupid bullcrap.

Diamond tracks are indeed intriguing.Normally I have seen curves, and swich overs from one track to another.But this is new here.What a long train!
Those are for when two different lines cross each other at grade.
That was great. I loved seeing that Providence & Worcester Railroad auto rack car near the end of that train. I've never seen one before. Keep the videos rolling.
It's always nice to see the P & W in foreign territory. I live in Worcester and work right behind their main yard.

Great video Jawtooth! I always have a fear thinking about kids walking on the tracks and getting a foot caught in a switch! That train was a monster! It sure gave that diamond a beating for the day! Thanks for sharing!
Don't know how you would get your foot caught.
@@maxrshelltrack7443 if your foot is between the rails when a automatic switch throws it will smash your foot and you would be trapped.
Very dangerous to tresspass on railroads, it could get you arrested, or worse seriously injured or killed!
A power switch is very powerful. A foot caught in one would be crushed. Hopefully it wouldn't close enough to give a "green" signal!
I got read the riot act for walking on the tracks by the C&O police for walking the tracks when I was a kid. He told me if I ever got caught again I would go to jail.

We use to have to record a train into a 10-hour loop, but, with PSR we don't have to. I think I might replay this video at bedtime.

Scares me to see ANYONE walking between the rail. I've seen two 'Decapitations' and other body remains.
It just doesn't seem to be a danger to most people.

Being a retired MOW Diamonds and Frogs where heavy maintenance lots tightening of lose bolts , replacing broken bolts , constant welding on and on. Railroad employment has been going down for decades due to mechanization, computers, most jobs are lost through attrition hopefully..

Born in 46. And living directly next to UP line we often did the same thing. Dad never found out about it though.
With PSR, one train can be in 3 states at one time. I was expecting that train to stop for a crew change in Atlanta.

I am not a "Train Guy" but as a casual observer I am blown away the jaw dropping length of that train! HOLY MACKERAL! What was that? About 5,000 cars or so? Cool stuff. Actually that train could reach the next city and STILL be IN the city it left from!
I was on a 13,000 foot intermodal train the other night. There was a labor shortage because of Covid. Instead of recalling furloughed conductors sooner, they just keep making the trains longer and longer. Its such a pain because nothing fits on one track in any of the yards now. We have to split a cut at least once, if not twice.
Boy those rail ends, where they separate for the crossing flange, muse be hammered and need frequent replacement. I'd like to se a good close up. As others said.. Kids don't have that forethought of "what could go wrong with this idea" Oh BTW.. Nice to see you made it to Britt!!!!
I guess that with the lines crossing at right angles (or close to 90 degrees) it puts more strain, wear and tear on the rail ends than if they crossed at a more acute angle.
and I bet most closed down after 😷 mandate(s) went into effect
One would think that nowadays with all the technology and high level engineering available that someone would engineer a gap fill for those crossings that would retract when not needed.

Of course having smooth rails rather than those gaps is easier on all the rolling stock as well, something else to consider.

I read the description in your video. The more I am intrigued in railroading the more I find out how depressing it really is. The job cutting and generally demoralizing work environment that I have uncovered leaves me disgusted.

On diamonds and panning camera action, I count the sound of the trucks hitting the rails. I heard 159-ish.😎😎😎
That was between 12,000 and 13,000 bhp of power pulling that *LONG* train.

If you live there you don't even hear it unless it's making a different noise
You get used to it.
There's a sort of musical rhythm to it, until there is a different car out two.

I counted 159 cars in that train. I too think it was over two miles long because of so many auto rack cars. I calculated it and found that 59 auto racks are needed to make a mile-long train, and this train had at least 80 of them.

I'm in a Cleveland, Oh suburb and this particular set of diamonds in Marion is two hours from my house. High traffic in Marion (and here in Cleveland too) but those kids, get off the tracks! That was a huge manifest you caught, wow. Not sure I like the Precision Scheduled Railroading if it's impacting railroad worker jobs. Great vid here, Jaw Tooth.
I counted 160 cars......dang!! I use to race MX in Marion back in the 70's..... I'm from Cleveland, Oh. Trains run deep in my heart.
I guess whether its pulled by steam or diesel, the music of the wheels on the coupling joints is all the same.LUV it.

Hey JT - another great one. I've never seen the inspector 'van' before - interesting arrangement! Hope it can get out of the way of traffic in time, lol.
Utility vehicles and trains both are in contact with eachothers via radio. The train was prob going that slow because it was keeping its distances away from the utility vehicles. Just like operators track trains to make sure not would be in the way, same is fine with utility
@@FlorenceSlugcat Anything on the through tracks is a “train.” A handcar (if there still were any) is a train.
@@algrayson8965 Wrong! A train is a locomotive with or without cars displaying a marker. A cut of cars and engine even on the main track isn’t a train unless it has a marker, which could be a red flag.

I counted 159 + or - a couple cars and compartments. The angle made it hard to make out the beginning and end of the cars when panning the camera. But 159 should be close. And I figure a little over 2 miles of train.

When I was a kid, I counted over 250 on one train near our house. That was 50 years ago though. They were all empty car haulers just outside Detroit.
The rhythm is pretty cool in some parts.

The sound of the cars going over the diamond has a rhythm and cadence of African tribal drums! An *.mp3 of the sound could be part of such an album.
Or sounds like Native Americans drums.
On my terminal railroad, we had the same problem with deer hunters. Nice video again!

Here in the UK all railroads must be fenced off from the public by law and trespassing gets you a £1000 fine.
Going to have to get back stateside and do some train trips ,perhaps I’ll get a chance to talk to some fellow railroad workers .
As you pointed out in previous videos - that is a great place to railfan. It has the tower and fence and you are right up close to the diamonds :) I like that sound! That is a nice long train and it doesn't have a DPU for some reason. Great video!
From a novice, what's a DPU? VIDEO and audio was great!!!!!! You could almost go to sleep listening to the rail cars go by especially with the ones with cars in them and the fuel cars rolling with them.
@@carlyeiter9263 Distributed Power Unit. An engine or multiple in the middle and/or the end of a train. They are controlled from the lead engine and are used to keep the pulling stresses low on very long trains and also for power to climb grades and maintain proper speeds in transit.

That was a long CSX train passing through Marion, Ohio. You are correct in saying that the longer and trains are a problem for the railfans who want to see as many trains as possible in the time that they have to train watch. The teenagers sauntering along the tracks does pose a problem. I guess they think it is no problem. They will see the train coming and get out of the way in time. However, we have seen many times in your videos and the videos of other RUclipsrs that trains can sneak up on you with little or no warning. Thank you for sharing this video with us!
@Thomas Mackowiak Kids will always be kids. I remember my childhood: my friends and I enjoyed walking and sitting on the freight line tracks, about three blocks from my home. A low-traffic line serving a cotton gin and furniture plant. Switching engines ran on this line, which branched off from a busy one-track local corridor. I called the switchers "one-eyed monsters."

Back then, the switching crew on the engine had two conductors and the engineer.
The only counting I did was minutes! Like seven and a half for that train to pass the railroad diamonds. Odd sound, that's for sure.
Great video! I don't much care for PSR either. The employees lose, fewer hires on and on. But great catch as always. Teenagers haven't got the part of the brain that says "I could be killed" developed yet. Scary to think about.
Their customers don't like it, either. They say that the level of service has gone down.
I would add that PSR is pissing off the public with trains blocking crossings. I saw (but didn't watch) one video claim that traffic was blocked for 15 minutes. Great way to encourage people to try and beat the train.
But so many of us all have done risky things as teens. And it's getting the pants scared off of them that teaches that critical lesson. lectures do no work on teens, only raw experience. Part of life.
Over-protecting them will just harm them in the long run. many of the problems we have today is the result of parents in the 90's and 00's being too over-protective.

Another excellent movie. I was trying to count the number of locomotives and railcars. Therefore, I missed reading the numbers off many of the cars. It was a nice train to behold and watch.
A minutes’ silence for the poor souls living in that house and dealing with the clatter of the wheels on the junction.

I used to live a 1/4 mile from a diamond and yes it gets loud.
I lived two blocks from the train tracks. Not only did I get used to the sounds, they lullled me to sleep at night. Quite enjoyable. Have a wonderful evening everyone.

Those criss-crossing heavy loads always seem to push those double diamonds further into the ground making a dip that only increases the effect of the wheels pounding across.

Walking on a track that has only one slow freight train three times a week, out in the country, has occupied many idle hours.
Back in my day they’d stop and write down names. But Usually just mine. I must have looked like the leader of my gang.
Those crossover tracks must be tough on the wheels by the sound they make!
