@@dzanier Good point. I loved NYPD Blue, The Shield, Hill St. Blues, etc. I think there were some really great shows put out in the last decade - Justified, Breaking Bad, etc. Every era has some good tv, but NYPD Blue was special. Great tv series. Up at the top of all crime-based television programs.

I have series 1 to 5 of NYPD Blues, have yet to watch them again. I've just ordered series 6. Currently I'm going through Hill Street Blues series 3 again. And I have to agree, they're the two best series ever to appear on TV
One of the best series to ever be on television. No one could have played the character like Dennis Franz. As a Vietnam Vet, he brought a realism to the character who was a Vietnam Vet, and all the psychological and sociological problems that it entailed. The total casting for the show was brilliant and the writing was exceptional.
Totally agree, the best show that's ever been on, over here in UK I remember it got shifted around different channels in the final seasons and it was disrespectful to the absolute class of the series, I watched every episode recently on Disney plus and it was magnificent, no current police shows can hold a candle to it

NYPD Blue is the best acted, best written and most realistic police show to ever air on TV. It would never be made today because every show would offend somebody. As the old saying goes in law enforcement: "If you're not pissing somebody off you're not doing your job."

@@navblue20 I imagine that's partially why such a show would never be made today no less. I spent 15 years in law enforcement, had a Sergeant that reminded me of Sipowicz in a lot of ways. He was constantly at odds with the brass over things, but he was good to all the officers below him that were all doing the job. Law enforcement is a lot of politics, a lot of BS and a lot of ass kissing by some and the good guys tend to be stuck in the same place for a long time or permanently. I was asked to take the Sergeant's exam and I turned them down flat because I wanted no part of the politics or the BS involved with it. You can bet in every department all across America, there's an Andy Sipocicz holding it together.
My father was a firefighter for 30 years he retired out as a Lt. When he announced his retirement every man in his squad and also in other houses asked him to become Capt. and stay on. His response was that as a Lt. he could take care of his men as well as others below him with minimal ass kissing where if he became Capt. He would have to be involved with political BS. Every man in the department respected him for his decision, even those few (mostly upper brass) that didn't care for him

From Hill Street Blues, Nasty Boys and now NYPD Blue, Dennis Franz was the genius and blueprint to the show. Whatever show that Steven Bocho executive produced, You know Dennis Franz will be in the big picture. Great actor in his prime.
As someone who retired after 26 years in Camden NJ this show really got it. Andy played a great character as a detective and a sergeant. He took the heat for his men and women and they respected him in the end for it. I loved it when he said to a patrol cop in uniform "this is a working man, he is not a stiff". Andy was teaching that young cop how to police. That guy is making society a better place. I always thought of that when I was a sergeant, take care of your men & women and dont hurt the working man out there. Go after the people who are making society a bad place to live. To me, that is what cops should be doing. Too bad there are not any shows like this on TV any longer. Southland was great as well. (Same producer)

When the show started, everyone was all about David Caruso. But Dennis Franz blew him away - and every other actor they paired him up with. One of the best redemption arcs and character growths in tv history.
Sorry your forgetting Dallas. 350 million viewers tuned into watching who shot jr. Dallas is the number 1 show and not even yellow stone can touch it. Call me when a tv series reaches 350 million viewers.
I'm pretty sure by that point the show was running on fumes, even though ratings were still decent. Greg left, leaving Andy as the only character with ties to the first season. Andy had been through just about everything you could deal with in one lifetime. I think they figured finish it on a happy ending.
Scrubs and the Office taught me the lesson of leaving them wanting more rather than overstaying your welcome like they did. When it's time it's time. Another year and they'd be tempted to end the show with Andy dying or something.
When the show started it was supposed to be about David Caruso. Andy kept it going. The show bought a whole universe of great characters and storylines. Franz did his job with great dignity.
David Caruso was simply not interesting. He was just a white cop. Now, a fat bald cop, recovering alcoholic, with anger issues and a sense of self righteousness, who is a loving single dad raising a small child, now THAT's an interesting character. Andy was also homophobic, but came to like and, later love John. (He asked John babysit his son). I loved the scene where some asshole called John "hey sweetheart", Andy gets right in his face and says "WHAT DID YOU CALL HIM? YOU WANNA CALL ME SWEETHEART AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS?"
@@cultclassic999 He was also racist, vulgar and temperamental which all made him so human and wonderfully flawed. A character with so many flaws and other layers wouldn't exist today but tv was a lot more honest and brilliant back then.
From Sal Bennedeto to Andy Sipowicz, Dennis Franz never let the audience down. His portrayals should be a study for anyone considering a career in acting.
Giant thank you to the creators, cast and crew of this most excellent series. Watching NYPD Blue is an honor and a privilege, almost a sacred experience.
I started rewatching The Blue the day after I got out of hospital after fracturing my C2 in my neck. I watched all 622 episodes as I recovered from my accident. It’s what kept me going. I loved every minute of it. The characters, the drama, the cop culture and the romances. Today I got the all clear from the hospital that I have recovered and The Blue felt like it was with me every step of the way. It’s the best series I have watched. Thanks for putting up the clips from the show as those clips got me hooked on the show again thirty years later. Cheers. P.
As a die hard police show fan from the days of Hill Street Blues, TJ Hooker, and Dragnet up to todays shows Blue Bloods, Law & Order, and so on there isn't a show that dealt with more real life drama then that of NYPD Blue. Andy Sipowitz by far brought this show to levels of greatness many shows dream of reaching. To me this show and the cast as far back to David Caruso and Bobby Simone will always be the GREATEST and missed more than any other. Just the emotions this show makes you feel and the rollercoaster of events taking place will make anyone want to watch this show season to season over and over again.
Greatest cop show ever. I became a cop when it was in its prime. I retired after 20 years in 2016. I never beat a confession out of anyone; but I damn sure used all of Sipowicz’s one liners.
Wow I never knew this is how NYPD Blue ended, this makes it even more special, that Andy got redemption for all his past human failings is really a great end to a fantastic series.
That final wide pan shot from up above is magical, a tribute to everything Andy overcome and the ones gone to heaven looking down. It doesn't get any better !
This show nailed it every time. This was the best ending of any series I have ever seen. Both the writing and acting on this show was superb. Bravo Zulu.
I watched every episode of this show every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m., I have never missed a show like I miss NYPD Blue, best show that's ever been on TV
@@Joe-rw1bb no it was supposed to be more about John Kelly, but the audience was surprisingly interested in Sipowicz (kind of the original anti-hero initially). Also, David Caruso had movie ambitions, as this was back when movies were considered more prestigious than TV.
Actually, Dennis Franz didn't get top billing until Jimmy Smits (Bobby Simone) left the show. The show where Rick Schroeder (Danny) was introduced was the first show where Dennis got top billing.
I’m glad the reboot/sequel series wasn’t picked up. I don’t see how they can continue the series with Andy being dead. Even if Franz didn’t want to come back, you don’t kill off the biggest reason the original show went 12 seasons before the show even starts.
Without a doubt best tv cop show ever aired. I never missed a minute and teared up in so many scenes throughout it's reign. Jimmy Smits ( Bobby) his death scene was AMAZING...no way anyone could get through that scene without breaking down...TV magic at it's best. Dennis Franz was absolutely brilliant as that character....amazing. there could never be a series to top NYPD blue.
To anyone who has never watched NYPD Blue, it is a must! I remember watching it as a young one, with my father. It is the show that I credit with getting me in touch with my emotions. Still visit clips on RUclips, and it brings up a lot of fond memories.
Andy's journey from bigoted, angry alcoholic, to a true leader of men is one of the greatest character arcs in the history of television. I revisit this show every few years. It still holds up as the best cop show ever.
Hello Dennis. You are a GREAT Actor in what ever part you play. And Semper Fi and Ohrah My Fellow Marine and Vietnam Vet. I served from 64 to 68. You and I and many others really know what the real horror is. God Bless Dennis. Oohrah.
This is and always will be the best cop show in television history and Dennis Franz will always be the best TV cop. I had the privilege of meeting him about 18 years ago when he was making a movie in my neighborhood. Nice guy.
I remember this like it was yesterday. As the camera panned out and then faded to black, I remember saying out loud, "Oh my God I can't believe it's all over." One of my favorite TV shows ever, I got emotional when it ended, and I got emotional just now reliving that moment!!
Dennis Franz is a magnificent actor. Never less than 100% real. The character is a 3-dimensional man, never an empty suit hero or villain. This was a great series and his performance throughout made it magnificent.
Watched it from beginning to the end. From a fan and an admirer in the United Kingdom, sending all my admiration out to the cast, and to all American fans and any ex cops among them. What a show, what a country, I send you my thanks and my blessings. Andy T.
@@blankblank8110 Also, after watching the superb way that Law and Order film on the New York streets I realise how much NYPD Blue lost by not being to film on location, because it was shot in LA.
There have been a lot of cop shows on television over the years. This was the best of them. The solidity of the writing gave all the performers the chance to shine in their roles. There were tragic stories, funny stories, outrageous stories and everything in between, but there were never any unbelievable stories. All of it was 100% grounded in reality. No other show in history came as close to showing us what a cop's life and work were really like.
And Captain Fancy would totally tell off the Chief of Detectives for his outburst at Andy. Because did what a good cop should've done. And the Chief of Detectives asked him to do a bad thing.
That music just sets the tone with the actors and storylines. If you were a fan of the show from day 1 to this scene it is very emotional. Watching Andy grow from a drunk cop on the edge to the Boss was TV at its finest. A couple yrs ago watched it all again on HULU. Still holds up if you can get past the lack of cell phones and Non PC scripts. Great show, never be another NYPD Blue.
Throughout the series, the character of Andy Sipowicz showed how a good, no-nonsense, tough detective in a hard world works. It would have been nice to have had just one more season, to have a taste of what a good boss is. What a great show!
Damn but I couldn't help welling up. I hadn't seen this scene since it aired on tv. Amazing ensemble acting, quality writing and a truly outstanding performance by Denis Franz. A much missed show.
After 29 years on the job (retired last September) I can tell you promotions are very much like this. You are empowered by the people who work for you because respect goes both ways. This show nailed it it so many ways.
@@denisenoles3159 Thanks. I spent the last nine years as chief for my dept so I had some options. I’m now the emergency manager for a large organization.
@@justanotherdrunk I've seen that mentioned a few times. It's interesting, but I don't hate it and I don't think it took anything from the moment. I think that dialogue was good. They wanted it the show to end as life just continuing on, as usual.
A remarkable character arc played superbly by an amazing actor. It was a privilege to be able to watch this incredible show. Andy was a good man and a great cop, he may not have been perfect but he was better than most. Franz was the only actor who could have played Andy, the only one who could make us feel for him, warts and all.
This show had a hell of a writer as we all know , and filmed here in NYC it got the grittiness just right . The whole cast is outstanding and the veteran actor Franz just got better with age . I remember him from hill street blues , and numerous films like die hard . In my book an exceptional actor and person . The way his character dealt with problems was an inspiration to us all.
Greatest police series in TV history. Haven't watched one before or since. Correction: I loved Miami Vice. The show that defined the decade of the 80's.
That was a really excellent show and Dennis Franz was really great....I think he won many awards for this role. I remember the night that NYPD premiered on TV....like it was yesterday.
Those award shows were great because you could see the love the cast had for each other. Smits and Franz were like brothers. Highly recommend people watch the clips.
I rewatched a big chunk of Season 12 on Hulu because of this channel, and I pretty much rewatched this scene several times. For everyone to hear Andy getting chewed out for doing the right thing, and taking ONE HUNDRED PERCENT of the heat when it was the squad that initially had doubts, AND for “Lou” to hear it as well and I think affirm he made the right choice in recommending Sipowicz for the job. Plus on his FIRST day as Squad Commander?! 😮 Such a great moment. And the new guys hear it too, so they’re like “this guy’s cool!” 😄 An excellent episode to end the series on, and one of the top five scene’s of the series. “How you feelin’ Lt.?” // “Not bad. How YOU feelin’?” 😄
I’ll never get tired of watching this clip. One of the few times a TV show landed the plane perfectly. The show didn’t jump the shark. It stayed the course. And the ending rewarded the viewer for all the years they’ve watched it. Man, I miss the Blue.

When the show started, everyone was all about David Caruso. But Dennis Franz blew him away - and every other actor they paired him up with. One of the best redemption arcs and character growths in tv history.
He was the best!
Best TV series hands down ever. Glad to have the entire series on DVD. Crap on TV today doesn't hold a candle.
Sorry your forgetting Dallas. 350 million viewers tuned into watching who shot jr. Dallas is the number 1 show and not even yellow stone can touch it. Call me when a tv series reaches 350 million viewers.
Lol comparing Dallas to NYPD Blue? Hahaha no one talks about Dallas it was throwaway TV. Get real.
Without a doubt the best police drama ever written
Dennis Franz
I wish they made an additional season with Andy running the precint as the commander. Greets from Italy to all of the show's fans
I'm pretty sure by that point the show was running on fumes, even though ratings were still decent. Greg left, leaving Andy as the only character with ties to the first season. Andy had been through just about everything you could deal with in one lifetime. I think they figured finish it on a happy ending.
While having a 13th season with Andy as squad commander would have been nice but the show ended on a high note.
Caruso was to full of himself. ran his self right out of the series
Caruso was the pits. The series really took off after Caruso packed it in.
"just a white cop" no wonder you hate him. SMH

Cheers. P.
Thanks! You got me thinking there - 261 episodes.
Lol thanks for correcting. I knew that math was off. That's gun smoke level!
Best cop show of them all.Love Dennis Franz,he's the real thing.
AMEN Bruce. Nothing comes close today.
Loved him in Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue. He actually made you believe the role.
Greatest cop show ever. I became a cop when it was in its prime. I retired after 20 years in 2016. I never beat a confession out of anyone; but I damn sure used all of Sipowicz’s one liners.
Congratulations, you made it!! Best wishes on a well-earned and well-deserved retirement, brother!!
Enjoy your retirement....I worked in the 73, 75, and 77...what houses did you work out of?
Bohler, I knew a bohler in the Army, early 80.
Oh yeah? Did you use "Ipsa this you pissy little b****"?
@@sethkimmel7312He didnt say NYPD.
Wow I never knew this is how NYPD Blue ended, this makes it even more special, that Andy got redemption for all his past human failings is really a great end to a fantastic series.
This series tore at my emotions every week for years. It was part of my life during those years, a snapshot of part of my life.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Great ending to one of the best cop shows ever. It still makes me feel emotional watching the final scene.
Good writing and acting has that effect.
The acting was such that you lived their lives. Outstanding stuff.
That final wide pan shot from up above is magical, a tribute to everything Andy overcome and the ones gone to heaven looking down. It doesn't get any better !
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
This show nailed it every time. This was the best ending of any series I have ever seen. Both the writing and acting on this show was superb. Bravo Zulu.
"Goodnight Boss"....Loaded WITH Love and Respect!
Great to watch this clip, it brought it all back. Dennis masterfully played my favorite character ever on a tv series. I really miss this show. GOAT
The absolute best cop show ever. Period.
Every thing about this show was perfect. Even the back ground music.
I remember bawling like a baby when it went off. One of the greatest series of all time.
I'm cry now seeing this..
I'm crying too
Those damn onions 😢
I watched every episode of this show every Tuesday night at 10:00 p.m., I have never missed a show like I miss NYPD Blue, best show that's ever been on TV
A part of my life...now a memory
I watched every show and recorded them on VHS and taped the TV guide episode description on it! King geek here!
The show was in a sense, Andy's story.
Kurt Snyder it was really focused around him. I wonder if that was the plan going in.
I think it's my story, too. Such a great character study of strengths and weaknesses.
We used to have such fabulous programs on TV...
I’m watching it for the first time, and I’m covered in goosebumps ❤
I couldn't imagine binge watching it. I had 12 years to enjoy it. It's gotta be like learning kung fu in The Matrix! Lol
Absolutely one of, if not, the best TV series ever. We just watched the entire series on HULU and it was even better.
Have binge watched several times. Now in season 11 after Charlotte Ross left
Oohrah.
They just don't make 'em like that anymore. The best cop show I have ever seen. Great, great series.
Back in the day, when TV was good and dealt with real life.
Thank you. For everything. I miss you.
Andy T.
Lol what's it like in UK watching a show with 260 episodes where your series go about 6-8 episodes a year?
@@blankblank8110I watched it when it was first shown here...90s? It hasn't been on here for quite some time.
@@blankblank8110 Also, after watching the superb way that Law and Order film on the New York streets I realise how much NYPD Blue lost by not being to film on location, because it was shot in LA.
One of the best scenes of servant leadership ever produced. So many layers to peel back. Perfectly written and acted!
Without a doubt.... One of the best shows in television.. Really miss it
I wish this show didn’t have to end! I also wished they brought Medavoy, Connie, Fancy and Tony to say congratulations to Andy! Loved this show!
That would have been nice to see fancy return to congratulate Andy along with Connie and Diane
And Captain Fancy would totally tell off the Chief of Detectives for his outburst at Andy. Because did what a good cop should've done. And the Chief of Detectives asked him to do a bad thing.
TILL THIS DAY ONE OF MY FAVORITE SHOWS OF ALL TIME N.Y.P.D. BLUE 🚔👮♂️DENNIS FRANZ GREAT ACTOR ONE OF MY FAVORITE ACTORS👍GREAT GUY
I cried when during the last 30 seconds of the episode. It was so sad to see it go.
Great ending to the greatest cop show in the history of cop shows
My favorite show of all time. Acting and writing second to none.
Franz is a superb actor and a pleasure to watch.
"For a dead pros." As Harry Bosch says, everybody counts or nobody counts, Andy always got that.
Best series ever to watch... Was so emotional when it ended... Together with New York Under Cover
After 29 years on the job (retired last September) I can tell you promotions are very much like this. You are empowered by the people who work for you because respect goes both ways. This show nailed it it so many ways.
Congrats! What are your retirement plans?

6:17 funny how Clark gets final series word and not Sipowicz
@@justanotherdrunk Good catch.
@Hello there, how are you doing this blessed day?
Wow, I had forgotten aboit this gem of a show. Time to relive it all.
If there was ever a show I need to bingewatch, it's this show...damn I miss this show.
Check out HULU thats where I rewatched it a couple yrs ago. All uncut commercial free. TV at its finest.
I am in Australia and there are no streaming services with the show and dvd's of this show are hard to find.....so pissed!
I have every episode commercial free on a HDD. Lol
It was actually filmed in LA, but they did outside scene shots in NY a couple of times a year.
The best cop show I've ever watched in my life for years
I forgot what a great show this was. And Sipowicz! What a unique character. All around excellence!
The music that accompanies these scenes is just fantastic! It sends chills down my spine! I wish I knew how to somehow get it just to listen to it.
Greatest police series in TV history. Haven't watched one before or since.
Correction: I loved Miami Vice. The show that defined the decade of the 80's.
Absolutely incredible writing and phenomenal acting it touches me deep in my heart you feel it
That was a really excellent show and Dennis Franz was really great....I think he won many awards for this role. I remember the night that NYPD premiered on TV....like it was yesterday.
Those award shows were great because you could see the love the cast had for each other. Smits and Franz were like brothers. Highly recommend people watch the clips.
Brilliant storyline, writing, camera work, acting. Stands among the finest American or any where in the world TV series.
Bobby would be proud of him
I rewatched a big chunk of Season 12 on Hulu because of this channel, and I pretty much rewatched this scene several times.
How YOU feelin’?” 😄
great scene. Wonderful memories of my favorite tv character and show.
BRING THIS SHOW BACK!! CLASSIC & VERY TRUE!
