Its awesome to see someone catch a bowfin and respect it. Most people where I'm from will just toss them up on the bank and leave them to die. They consider them a trash fish or bycatch. I think they're awesome animals. Mouth full of teeth, bad attitude, and so much fun to catch. Kudos!
I just caught one of these bowfin for the first time tonight in a retention pond down in the Orlando area , It fought like a demon , it kept trying to bury itself into a mud hole on the bank but I eventually landed him . I had no idea what it was at first and almost grabbed him by the lip like I would a bass , it was dark out and at the last minute I noticed all of those scary looking teeth , the head on this thing was super tough , it felt like it was made out of hard plastic . Now I’m watching every video I can about this species , your video is probably the most informative one so far .
Dunno if anyone gives a damn but if you guys are bored like me atm you can stream all the new movies on instaflixxer. I've been watching with my brother for the last couple of months :)
I just decided to go after my first bowfin last week with leftover saltwater minnows we were using for surf fishing (south jersey) and my first one was 5lbs!!! Absolute beast I’m hooked on these fish now they’re so interesting and fun to chase
this was a lot of fun and you are a great teacher... i enjoyed the lessons and the experience.. you have created a great way to utilize this medium! i subbed ..not that that matters much lol... but this is great stuff man
Roundup? I would like to do a little catch and eat along with catch and release. I’m not that sure about eating any freshwater fish. I’m in clear lake myself and definitely would eat anything out of the water within miles, but even in the country you never know what kind of agricultural runoff there might be.
The county here in Tennessee sprays Roundup along the edge of my property. All it does is kill my Bermuda grass! The only thing that grows back is Johnson grass and Thistles!
Thanks! I have been to a spot in Katy recently but didn't do so well. I want to head back out because I'm convinced there's a certain species there that I haven't caught yet. When I head back out, if I'm successful, I'll include the location in the video.
I usually try to say the name and general location in each video, but here's the address for this one: 3503 Murphy Rd. Missouri City, TX 77459 Good luck!
Theyre really terrible eating if Im being honest. If youre gonna eat them you have to keep them alive until you clean them, and you have to bleed them out thoroughly.
Yeah, it certainly looks that way. It's called "divergence" when two unrelated species develope the same adaptations due to living in similar environments. It's really cool.
Loads of them in Oyster Creek at Cullinan Park in Sugar Land. They are very, very cautious and spook easily. I believe it's due to how incredibly shallow the water is. Good luck!
Aaarrggghh... Must every piece of nature be drowned in poison? Bad enough we have all the dumping by commercial enterprises but we actually PAY (taxes) to get poisons put on the land and in the water. My husband was a former TX Parks & Wildlife biologist and he was often discouraged by the pressure to spray, mow, and plant St. Augustin. Put a bottle of hydrogen peroxide in your pack for those wounds.
Sweet video. 3 things. 1) I want to fish with you, you seem to know a lot. 2) Stop biting your nails. 3) Damn your rods need to be cleaned. But anyway, nice job.
Great job on this channel bud. Very fun and educational.
That bowfin slapped the living hell out your jaw my friend, good channel keep up the good work
Cool to see a local RUclipsr. You've got great energy, fun facts and are entertaining.

I just decided to go after my first bowfin last week with leftover saltwater minnows we were using for surf fishing (south jersey) and my first one was 5lbs!!! Absolute beast I’m hooked on these fish now they’re so interesting and fun to chase
Thanks for the lesson. Where I stay at in NC our bowfins are normally a dark brown/black color.
I live in Richmond I’m always looking for spots close by to fish thank you so much for your channel
Very educational and wholesome, love it
Every bowfin I see on RUclips is so much lighter than the ones up here
Same, i shot my first one the other day and it was fairly dark.
Depends on the water.... by lake Houston they are dark due to the settlements
I love that this is based in Houston!! ‘H-Town!!
htownnn
I've heard the fish is in Bradford
I wondered if it was that 6, I lived near it for 35 years.
Very cool, thanks for posting the video.
Bowfin,the mushy fish : a documentary

Hey man, it's nice to know there's another Houstonian who loves nature as much as I do
😂🤣 millions of people, safe bet there are a few!
Man I go to Livingston to fish all the time. Got a good spot by the spillway. It’d be cool to meet up and fish with you.

If you use shrimp in the river around here you can hook some massive ones.
Love the shirt! Max Holloway!
I love the small history lesson
In Louisiana we call them "Choupique," (chew peek) and make delicious patties or balls. Bread crumbs, chives, you get it. yUm

Nice fish! This is my 1st time I look at this species. And surprise me is it's the snakeheads species looks similar to it. Any related?
No; totally different species. Plus, the bowfin is native to the US, and the snakehead is an invasive species.
Way to go awesome brother great job proud sister
Good video man
Do you have any spots In Katy tx? And good job

Just caught a bunch of these this weekend. Had no idea what they were. Some nasty sharp teeth forsure.
Cool vid!
Awesome!
Very cool
It was a good story.🎣😎
I've never seen this species of fish before, Bowfin?.
They are also called mud fish, mudpike and dogfish super fun to catch.I catch em in tributaries off the Mississippi.
i neeed to know where you are going for these fishing spots! :)
I usually try to say the name and general location in each video, but here's the address for this one: 3503 Murphy Rd.
Missouri City, TX 77459
Good luck!
Yea I appreciate your videos man, thanks for the address.
Keep making these videos! I'm loving them!
Is the bowfin and edible fish?
I've never tried it but people do eat them, yeah. I think Luke on Catfish and Carp has a few videos on bowfin catch and cooks.
Theyre really terrible eating if Im being honest. If youre gonna eat them you have to keep them alive until you clean them, and you have to bleed them out thoroughly.
What a cutie!
I would think a Snakehead would be more closely related than a Gar.
Yeah, it certainly looks that way. It's called "divergence" when two unrelated species develope the same adaptations due to living in similar environments. It's really cool.
“Convergence”*
Some of finest eating freshwater fish. We eat them like crazy in louisiana
Mudfish, aka Choupique here in S. Louisiana.
Where is a good body of water to catch buffalo? I never have success with finding buffalo lol
Loads of them in Oyster Creek at Cullinan Park in Sugar Land. They are very, very cautious and spook easily. I believe it's due to how incredibly shallow the water is. Good luck!
WILD LIFE thanks a lot men. You're videos are cool to watch dude keep it up.
❤️ sneakhead
That isn’t a snakehead it’s a bowfin but they are easily mistaken for, snakehead are invasive
Their scale is armored
Yeah fishing under the bridge at the diary ashford and briar forest at terry Hershey park people always throw bottles and all kinnda crap its annoying
I believe its a snake head bc it doesnt have the black mark on the tale im not an expert but thats what ive been told
It was a bowfin. Their tail is red in summer
I learned not to grab a bowfin by the lip the hard way…..

Your videos are good but you need to go out fishing again
Elaborate, please.
Sweet video. 3 things. 1) I want to fish with you, you seem to know a lot. 2) Stop biting your nails. 3) Damn your rods need to be cleaned. But anyway, nice job.
NOT if they are in a deferent state.
Bowfin are fucking annoying if youre not targeting them.
