My Rogerina! 😍😍😍😂 Since seeing this video for the first time in high school, it took years for me to realize that it wasn’t only Freddie who dressed in drag. 😅😂
Love this song - Freddies vocals are superb. Love the clip too - especially Rogerina. Yes, the drag thing was Rogers idea. I’m in Australia and I don’t think anyone batted an eye when this clip came out. Everyone loved it.
The ballet section is "Afternoon of a Faun". Freddie's "naked" costume and pointy ears, and the dancers are the same in that ballet. Rudolf Nureyev danced in it, and he was Freddie's favorite ballet dancer, and Freddie was a huge fan of ballet. He even perfomed with Royal Ballet for charity in 1979. ruclips.net/video/Jh71Cn8ZEzE/видео.html
His little run through the doorway(🥺🥺) when he comes back after the ballet thing and the whole last verse is my favorite part ❤❤❤ And it was the 80s, man. They were not ready to see men dressed as women and they just didn't get that it was from a soap.
Yes that little double step through the doors that Freddie does is my favorite part. You will miss it it’s so quick if you’re not watching carefully ♥️
I can remember watching David Bowie as Ziggy Stardust with my parents. They never said one word about it. I was very lucky in that aspect and that show was in the 70's.
I still contend (and I was around for it) that MTV caved to pressure from a very small but *very* vocal religious minority... the US actually *did* have more of a men-in-drag tradition than just a few comedians. I also think the *real* sticking point over the video wasn’t the drag, but the very sensual/orgy-like symbolism in the ballet section. Whichever the case may be, MTV was being quite hypocritical considering they kept running Madonna’s writhing “Like A Virgin” video. Of course, now MTV has completely devolved into playing crappy “reality” shows instead of music videos...while Queen has attained Legend status, so who really won?
Freddie was a boxer when in boarding school. His teeth caused a lot of blood to flow, unfortunately. There are many videos where he punches the air like he does here. I love that. As far as the meaning of their songs, Freddie said if you see it, then it's there. Everybody can see it in their own way. As for the banning of the video in the US by MTV, they (probably a bunch of old white men) wanted Queen to make a different video and they refused. Queen stopped touring in the US after that. They had plenty of fans in Europe, Japan, and South America who could sing all their songs and would sing along. We really missed out in the US because of that.
John wrote this, and I think it’s nothing more than a person in a relationship that is thinking of getting out of it. Freddie always said he wanted to leave his videos very open and left to interpretation by the listener. He always loved the ballet and had a good friend who was part of the Royal ballet and they included Freddie in a show, but soon realized, he was not a good dancer so they didn’t give him a lot of directed moves and found he did better by letting him just perform as he did on stage so well. This excerpt is actually from a show he did.
John did write this but it is because he wanted to break free from the constant grind of touring. He wanted to spend more time with his wife and children.
I am always amazed when I read this. What an incredible bond they created with their fan base in the age before social media. And kudos to the original fans. Lucky and smart!

Dominique is the mother of his first two oldest children and they were together from 1976 until 1989. They got married in 1988 in January but then they split up a year later and he lived with a woman named Debbie and had three kids with her and they split up about ten years later but he was still married to Dominique. It was fun watching you watch the whole video. I literally laughed out loud when you said, “Oh shit!” When the weird part started. Glad you enjoyed it. You should react to Rock in Rio Blues from the Rock and Rio concert. It’s unbelievable that a human being can hit those kind of notes. Thank you for doing what we all asked for! Another brilliant but not so well known Deaky song is Spread Your Wings....please please react to this. Recorded in Roger’s garden - along with We Will Rock You - maybe react to those back to back??
Like a broken record- you should react to this live at Wembley 1986(Saturday 7/12). Everything was amazing at that concert. Roger had commented that it was close to perfect.
When John Deacon wrote this song, he originally intended to be a male perspective of the women’s liberation movement but t was then taken on as somewhat of an anthem for personal freedom for someone who finds his/herself in a situation where they feel repressed. The idea is now they want to ‘break free’ of their circumstances and show the real person that they are. The idea of dressing up in the video was suggested by Roger Taylor, featuring the band dressed up in drag as a pastiche to the Coronation Street women” with Freddie as a housewife, Roger Taylor as a young schoolgirl, Brain May as a housewife, and John Deacon as a grandmother. Echoing the song’s lyrics, all of them want to ‘break free’ of their lives. Roger Taylor said, “We had done some really serious, epic videos in the past, and we just thought we’d have some fun. We wanted people to know that we didn’t take ourselves too seriously, that we could still laugh at ourselves. I think we proved that”. Freddie had performed "Bohemian Rhapsody" with the Royal Ballet Theatre. They were under the mistaken idea that Freddie could dance but as he, himself admitted, he couldn't really dance. He just moved organically with the music when he performed. but nothing was ever choreographed. When he couldn't get the dance steps straight, he suggested they just carry him across the stage. So that's what they did (yes, there is a video of it). He thought it would be fun to recreate his dance with the members of the Royal Ballet Theatre for this video.

Yes dear, thanks for this video reaction. I find them amazing and hilarious. Very ahead of their time. Looking forward for more Queen offcourse. Love your beard by the way. Well its not a beard, but I dont know how to wright it in English🤣
@@barbaraladouceur6305 One of my favorites also! The entire band looks so "powerful" on that stage and I'm a big fan of the original Highlander movie. So intense! Both the music and the movie.
This is not about sexuality. It’s about someone tired of life. Waning a different life. The bit in the middle was just to indulge Freddie. Brian said in a film he and Roger commented on this film. He still has his bunny slippers.
Great comments HAP. I never got the symbolism to death in the ballet scene until now. This is still a great song!! It’s Queen!!! There was nothing that needed to be blocked in this video. At the expense of pissing Queen off even!!! 🌻🌻
I think it freaked MTV out because we do not really have a tradition of men cross dressing in theatre. Britain has pantomimes, where I understand it is not uncommon for men to play women. Heck, Monty Python did lots of skits in drag. Here, outside of one or two comics (Jonathan Winters, Flip Wilson) who did female characters, not so much. And to the straightlaced South, well, this said “homosexual”, and that was perverted and evil. I look at this and think that all of them would have fit into Monty Python perfectly (especially John)!
Awesome! It was Roger's girlfriend's idea to dress in drag actually. It baffles me too why some people can be so narrow-minded about it and result in a snowball effect that ruins things for everyone else. Also, in case your wondering, the device in the opening sequence was a tea-maid. Its a combination kettle and alarm clock. Its supposed to boil water or make tea when the alarm goes off, but was reputedly unstable. Brian and Roger did an audio commentary on this, its fantastic, insightful and funny. ruclips.net/video/jiwz3sBEWcU/видео.html
This is a great song and a fun video. I just don't get why people are so scandalized by men in drag. I grew up in the north-central US, and at every class reunion since 1960, a trio of guys who were big jocks in high school would don dresses, wigs & high heels, and lipsync to Andrews Sisters songs. Everybody was amused, even the girls who had become nuns didn't object! No big deal; it's just all in fun. So who were the people who complained? I have never met anyone who was offended. Maybe it was the Bacchanalian scene that set them off.
I have to add, I don't even think this was the American people themselves. It was just a few suits at MTV who acted like gatekeepers, there is a general tradition of men dressing in women's clothes in rock, it wasn't actually very strange. You can find pictures of Peter Gabriel with a red dress in a foxes head, David Bowie has appeared in dresses, Robert Plant and Mick Jager has worn dresses, long before this video. They also banned the Queen video (Body Language) before I Want To Break Free, for having too much explicit content. They banned a video from the Eurythmics as well, because Annie Lennox, was trying to look like a man. Of course they had no problem showing Motley Crew's corny videos, that were full of skimpily clad girls.
Great reaction! Seriously the song and video has nothing to do with sexuality, you might have been send on a wild goose chase there. I can tell you that this song is damn difficult to sing, I have never really seen a great live performance of this song. Even for Queen themselves this is that one song that they did not do better live. I have never seen anyone else do great job of it live. You have finally met Rogerina! Now you just have to meet Rogerina 2.0. In The Great Pretender ruclips.net/video/mLRjFWDGs1g/видео.html. They are reenacting a specific ballet, the Afternoon of the Faun. If you pay close attention you will see that they all have pointed ears. The idea is more that the housewives escapes reality and it transferred into a dream world. The ballet is the dream world. In truth this is a John Deacon song, he wrote it about touring too much, it really doesn't have anything to with sexuality. Freddie loved ballet so he just included that, but he was terrible at dancing himself, he couldn't perform the same steps twice. Everything he did was spontaneous, therefore they had to carry him around. Freddie knew a lot of the dancers personally. He did a charity gig with the Royal Ballet in 1979, and there they discovered that he was really bad at doing anything that requires repetition or a specific routine. He could do the steps perfectly one time, and then he would change everything the next time, he just didn't like repetition.
Those scenes are from Freddie doing ballet, I don't remember the name of the company. Freddie was an amazing vocalist, he could do so many different types of things with his voice! As Brian, in the movie Botha, Americans are prudish in public, and perverted, I believe, in private.
Oh yeah in the making of THE GREAT PRETENDER video Freddie actually gets part if his chest hair shaved off and also his armpits because he is portraying one of the back ground singers. Oh and Roger is a back ground singer too along with a friend of Freddie's Peter Straker. They make pretty girls. Watch the making of this music video. Then you can watch the original video THE GREAT PRETENDER. Much love to ya. Thanks for the new nickname QUEEN BEE i love it.
@@HAP3SPEAKZ It was just a spoof, a laugh at your British television program Coronation Street. I don't know why anyone was bent out of shape back in '84. 🤔
@@HAP3SPEAKZ 1982 the Eurithmics video to "Love is a Stranger" got banned by MTV, because the clearly female singer Annie Lennox (who had short hair) removed a wig in the video and some MTV guy thought: "TheRE's A tINy cHanCE ThaT tHIs CoULd bE a gUy iN DraGs! We cAn't TOlerATe ThaT!!!11!11!" ...
When this video was newly released I was living in a small town in Arkansas the didn't even allow MTV, so MTV banning the video wasn't an issue for me. Anyway on Friday and Saturday nights they got videos on WTBS in Atlanta, Georgia. And WTBS showed this video regularly. MTV started in 1981 showcasing rock videos. David Bowie and Rick James took them to task for not showing any black artists. About 1983 there was a black artist came along and seriously challenged them. He had a song called "Billie Jean" and he wanted his video played on MTV. MTV didn't want to play the video. Then the president of CBS threatened to remove all CBS videos from MTV if they didn't play "Billie Jean". "Billie Jean" became the first video by a black artist to go into regular rotation on MTV. Now, yes, that is only one video to one song. First we have to figure how many times each day each video played on MTV. Then we have to account for other black artists like Whitney Houston, Prince, Rick James, etc. Then we say we have to dump some of what we've got to fit them in. Queen were not as big in the US as they were in other countries, so they could go (remember Queen quit playing in the US in 1982). So MTV bans Queen's video and uses that slot to fit other artists to get their butts out of trouble. And so "I want to break free" was banned on MTV. But as I said I always saw it regularly on WTBS Atlanta which is about as Deep South as the US gets.
LOVE it all. The song is superb as is the video and your reaction. I have heard the song many times, but became so much more when put together with the visuals. MTV banned this 🌈. but allowed the "I Touch Myself" video practically on loop?? Go figure. 😏. Your expressions are priceless and make me howl with laughter. Thank you for that. Peace J ✌
Hi Hap! It was actually Rogers Girlfriend at the time that suggested they dress in drag. The set was homage to the soap Coronation Street. MTV did not like the video and banned it. It upset the band and they did not tour the U.S. again. Stand to be corrected, but I think that’s how it went. Loved the reaction..😍🙏
I was 16 years old in America when I first saw this video and I laughed my butt off. My parents were born in the forties and they laughed about it but if it did get blocked on MTV it was probably blocked because of the part in the middle. Americans don't think dressing in drag is funny and even now that gay marriage is legal, my grandparents would roll over in their graves!! America is very very traditional and conservative compared to the UK and if you're older than four or five running around with your mom's high heels and you're a boy they think you're funny. Americans are not prudes at all. Once we got past the people that were born in the early 1900s people were more accepting of homosexuality and bisexuality even if we don't understand it. I think the reason this music video got blocked was the part in the Middle where Freddie Mercury was on top of all those bodies.. Americans even in 1984 and even in the 1990s would have thought that was a little gory. Even though we have allowed gay marriage today that doesn't mean that orgies are legal.😂😂 if they showed music videos today it may or may not get blocked again but it's just that America is different and don't laugh at me and dressing up in women's clothes. I thought it was hilarious and many of my friends did as well but we were born in the 1960s and most of us were love children so we would get a good laugh off of anything that was different. I don't want to sound like a prude myself but I did think that the video to body language was nasty and I was glad it was taken off of MTV. Freddie Mercury was out of his mind and even the other band members said the same thing about that song.. I did like back chat from Hot Space.. disco Deaky😂
HAP3SPEAKZ he has been called that many times, when he was young, he could very quick look like a girl 🤗 the outher boys dont call him that......but many fans sometimes including me 🤣
3:21 Of course not a 100 pertinently and stuff, but Marc Martel is known for his similar Voice to Freddie. Many people hate on Marc and say ''NO THAT'S BULLSHIT HE DOESN'T SOUND LIKE FREDDIE MEEEH MEEEH MEEEH'' that's disgusting. Marc does sound like himself but his Voice has some moments where he sounds like Freddie. So basically yea Marc doesn't come 100% close to Freddie's Voice but he has these Moments. You should react to some Marc Martel and you'll notice. 3:50 yes Rogerina is cute af 😂😂 Roger shaved his legs just for this Music Video. He could definitely be mistaken as a girl. In the early days it even was like that and Roger grew a little beard so people could notice that he was a Man😂. Roger was in a parody Music Video of this song in 2002 and played Rogerina there again, he just wasn't as cute as he was here of course 😂. But it was cool seeing Rogerina in a older state of Roger 😂. 4:43 that's the Bohemian Rhapsody pose if you notice. (actually it's the Queen II Cover of the Album) but what I mean with pose is Freddie below, Brian above, John on the Left and Roger on the right. Yes this Music Video was an Idea by Roger and I also don't understand why they would ban this. 12:38 yep and This song is also written By John Deacon. Great Reaction.
If you want to see Queen, especially Freddie, being especially frisky you might want to try this 3-minute video.Sheer Heart Attack (Queen In Hammersmith: 26/12/1979) [Filmed Concert] - ruclips.net/video/I3UqaiGH1Yw/видео.html After the speakers came crashing down you will note that when Freddie goes up on the drum riser his mike was broken (no surprise). He then went over to John's mike to try to finish the song but John's mike was always deactivated. Thus Freddie ended up on the floor. Even Brian (normally the voice of reason) got into it at the end. Lots of fun for everyone. Enjoy it when you get around to it. :)
Great video, song and reaction. Try See What A Fool I've Been by Queen to hear some great blues. Love the live BBC Session, London July 1973/2011 remix or the Langham Studio Version 1973 or Live at the Rainbow 1974 or live at Hammersmith 1975...all are great!
It’s down to interpretation - he was not known to be gay until much later. What you’re seeing is his showmanship, humour and artistry. 👏 It is said this song is a message to all to love yourself and be your true self
You are reading way too much into the video. The second part of the video included a composition Freddie rehearsed and performed with the Royal Ballet and choreographed by Wayne Eagling. The ballet was originally choreographed by Vaslav Nijinsky for the Ballets Russes, and was first performed in the Théâtre du Châtelet in Paris on 29 May 1912. Nijinsky danced the main part himself. The music is Claude Debussy's symphonic poem Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune.
This is just my take on why MTV banned this video. I think the execs took one look at Roger, fell in love, then realized she was a he and panicked. I'm not a gay woman, but even I think Roger looked lovely. And though some are saying there is no long history of men dressing up as women in the US that's not entirely true. Milton Berle, one of the most famous comedians in America, used to dress up as various female characters on his television show. The executives in charge of MTV would have grown up watching him. They might also have watched Monty Python and not batted an eyelash. And since MTV was trying to be edgy I can't really see why they would have thought men in drag would be an issue. If they feared a homophobic response, that also doesn't make sense. Because it just would have generated controversy, as in publicity, and more people would have watched MTV.
Oh your face hahahahaha seeing Roger. He does make a very cute girl. The song and video were banned In the United States by an ultra homophobic MTV that did not understand that it was a spoof of "Coronation Street". This crippled Queen commercially in America until shortly after Freddie Mercury's death. Fortunately, people living in Canada and the UK who got the joke were able to enjoy it.
Wants to break free from the dull routine of everyday life. It's really just that simple. MTV blocked it because the conservative population of America found transvestite-ism offensive.
Love this song ,Roger makes a cute girl ,can you please react to Josh groban singing ,weeping ,a beautiful song ,about apartheid in South Africa ,thanks from Liverpool UK x
Cross-dressing by men?Sure, in America. Here on Y/T, check out "Milton Berle dress" he was a comedian in the early days of television and frequently dressed as a female character! Also Flip Wilson, I think.
The reason MTV banned this video in the US is because Roger looked too much like a woman. A hot woman at that. Many Christian conservatives were concerned it would lead to "ideas" in the youth. When a straight Christian male watches this video and has to stop himself as he tries to remember that the hot blonde in the short skirt is also a man, it is deemed too suggestive. That was the early eighties for you though. This attitude really continued up until recently. It almost got Adam Lambert banned also, as conservative parents did not want their children thinking about the suggestively dressed, openly gay rock star who was kissing his boyfriend on stage without shame. Adam fought through the bigotry and help to change people's minds as the first openly gay (from the beginning of his career) rock artist to become a number 1 hit. And the source of a lot of Adam's inspiration and self-confidence? Freddie Mercury and Queen.

Princes of the Universe the video💥
It's was certainly different.

Can you react to Princes of the Universe? Freddy wrote it for the 1986 Highlander movie. The video totally rocks. It's one of my favourites.
Yeah the rat race. Sometimes feel that way on RUclips 🤣

Freddie makes a great satyr! 🥰
Great comments HAP. I never got the symbolism to death in the ballet scene until now. This is still a great song!! It’s Queen!!! There was nothing that needed to be blocked in this video. At the expense of pissing Queen off even!!! 🌻🌻
I would be pissed off too. Just needed a reason.

John wrote the song he said it was about the women's liberation movement
This is a great song and a fun video. I just don't get why people are so scandalized by men in drag. I grew up in the north-central US, and at every class reunion since 1960, a trio of guys who were big jocks in high school would don dresses, wigs & high heels, and lipsync to Andrews Sisters songs. Everybody was amused, even the girls who had become nuns didn't object! No big deal; it's just all in fun. So who were the people who complained? I have never met anyone who was offended. Maybe it was the Bacchanalian scene that set them off.
I would suggest Freddie Mercury: The Great Pretender
Boris Licina yas, the return of Rogerina
YES
Boris Licina 🤣😂there Roger is also lowley in his costume
Love it 💕
I'm glad you like it ;)

Thank you for that, I have not got around to that song yet. Yes you are ALL my Queen bees, :) and you are a Queen bee.

Great video and song very popular here in Australia when it came out loved it then still do.
But as I said I always saw it regularly on WTBS Atlanta which is about as Deep South as the US gets.
try to react "its a hard life live performeds in rio its a good songs
LOVE it all. The song is superb as is the video and your reaction. I have heard the song many times, but became so much more when put together with the visuals. MTV banned this 🌈. but allowed the "I Touch Myself" video practically on loop?? Go figure. 😏. Your expressions are priceless and make me howl with laughter. Thank you for that. Peace J ✌
He with with the Royals Ballet.
No, I have read the comments in this video and the last video I did. What you said preety much sums it all up.

ROGERINA.....Ohh yess 😉

HAP3SPEAKZ he has been called that many times, when he was young, he could very quick look like a girl 🤗 the outher boys dont call him that......but many fans sometimes including me 🤣
Freddie would sometimes call him Pretty Boy or Blondie on stage.

Dios mío y no es lo MASSSSS
Woman, Gay men and straight men from around the world
Wanted Freddie. There will never be anyone like him again.❤❤
Yes, MTV blocked it in America....but not all American's agreed. I'm an American and we loved Queen.

The song is about the start of women’s liberation in the 60’s. That’s why he’s saying he wants to break free

It is said this song is a message to all to love yourself and be your true self
Yes John Deacon wrote this an subjected that they dress on drag an it was a joke in London at a certain house ! LoL
The song was in 1980 - a different era where anything from society’s ‘norm’ was not accepted by some. The UK was more accepting
Ridiculous that America was so offended. For the record...we loved it in Canada! :)
MTV was conservative in the early days.

No, Coronation Street was on ITV :)

Hello HAP3SPEAKZ! reaction this, pls! Thsnk you!
Roger is prettier in this than a lot of women I know. Don't overthink the meaning, enjoy the song.
Great reaction. Your comments were spot on, this video lost them America. My god john deacon wrote some bangers
Glad you enjoyed
Are you ok buddy? It looks like something unlocked in you when you saw Roger 😂😭
Cross-dressing by men?Sure, in America. Here on Y/T, check out "Milton Berle dress" he was a comedian in the early days of television and frequently dressed as a female character! Also Flip Wilson, I think.
Freddie looks sooo hot in mini and thigh highs
