a lot of tactics in star wars make no sense, like how they often land in am extremely hot LZ or drop off vehicles from ships right into battle. makes no sense. its much better to use artillery, and air strikes to prestrike the enemy and suppress them, land in a secure safeish area and set up a command/rally point and then have your forces push up and flank the enemy and maintain a reserve/security element slightly behind. and make sure to use fire and movement.
however most of star wars ends up being "run directly into the enemy and shoot until you win due to plot armor". kinda a shame

I mean even with Clones and Mon Calamari they still lost the first round, then even with Gungan reinforcements they lost again, but then the Quarren turned on the Separatists and they finally had enough manpower to push the Separatists back. Exactly my thoughts, hated the planning that went into this assault. They sent in the main force before even getting an idea of what they were up against, or trying to soften up the defenses a bit. There were a few Y wings that ran bombing missions but not nearly enough to neutralize the AA, and nothing to counter the fighters. They needed two dedicated waves, fighters/ bombers, THEN the transports. Never have I heard about a landing without air cover, the gunships are just sitting ducks when fighters are present.

Overall, I dare to say that this battle went as best as it could. The planet of Geonosis is basically a big droid factory, therefore it was necessary to disable key facilities asap, without any prep operations, such as extensive recon, securing the bridgehead, and managing air superiority. This, of course, lead to big casualties, but on the other hand, with more "careful" strategy, the Republic forces would have to fight a prolonged war. And because of the droid factories, the Geonosians were able to replenish their lines very easily, and outnumber the Republic forces. The Republic would then very likely lose the whole campaign, unless it scrambled reinforcements from other fronts of the galaxy, potentially sacrificing much more territory in the Outer Rim.

We wanted to see that kind of large scale battle like that it was awesome, Anakin keepin his composure under fire and pushing forward, Obi-Wan takin’ hella punishment like always, that kind of a great sequence; not EVERY single episode has to be story driven. This is Star Wars. Star. WARs.
