If it makes you feel better, I live in an extremely small rural town. I went to the GameStop thinking I’d be the only one there getting the game. They told me I got the LAST copy they had, people had been buying it all day.
They said that so you would buy it, they had a few boxes of it in the back

Also, this was Game Stop. The only time the cashiers talk about a game unprompted is if you're already in the process of buying it, so not really any point to them doing something like you suggest.

I think one advantage TTYD has is like...what else is happening on Switch right now? What else is happening in gaming? Now's a really good time for TTYD to grab everyone's attention, because its a AAA video game that is releasing and people like. This in fact, stands out right now.

Honestly, I'm glad the game is released in its own time frame instead of being sandwiched between other releases. It gives it the perfect shot to stand out.

I checked 3 separate stores for it, and every one was sold out. And the 4th only had 2 copies left. I'd say it's selling pretty well, and I hope Nintendo goes in that direction for Paper Mario from now on.

Since Alpha Dream shut down and the Mario & Luigi series is presumably dead now, if Paper Mario can return to its RPG roots and fill that void, that would be great.
I was always more of a Mario & Luigi fan than a Paper Mario fan, so when Alpha Dream shut down, I was legitimately heartbroken.

Might be the biggest chance fans have for getting another more traditional Mario RPG experience. Mario & Luigi was meant to fill that box in Nintendo's eyes of a combat and leveling-oriented RPG, meaning Paper Mario games became more experimental. With no more Mario & Luigi, maybe they figure it's more effective to have Paper Mario be that series from now on.

So I woke up at 7am this morning, got ready for work and booked it to the Walmart. When I got there I didn't see the game anywhere in the case and my heart sank for a moment. "Did they not get the game? Did it sell out? Oh no!" So I went to the lady working there and asked if they had the new Paper Mario game. She looked at me in shock and said "yes we do, we just haven't displayed them yet." So I said "Ok good! I thought they were all gone already! Can you get me a copy to purchse?" She came back with a tiny little box with maybe like 10 or 15 copies of the game. I can offically say I was the first person in my small town to buy this game lol 😂 I got there so fast they weren't even on display yet. In all my years of gaming I've never experienced that before. I've been the person to buy the last of something multiple times, but I've never been the first. Feels good!
I got OFF of work this morning and immediately called Walmart to make sure they actually had it. I was giddy the whole way there.
I remember that happened to me with Mario Maker 2, I made the bike ride to my target early that morning and they hadn't even gotten the game out yet, good times :D
I actually work in a Walmart (but for a different company) and I asked the electronics manager politely to stock it at the start of my shift. End of my shift, they were never able to find it 😭
I bet all the rest of those copies were gone by the end of the day
I think a lot about how the average parallel universe has TTYD as just "the second paper mario" rather than the last of its kind. Then again, folks from those universes probably look at ours and say "Wait, you guys got a Pikmin 3? AND 4? The last one we got was Hey Pikmin!"

@@NoTimeForNoodles Story was arguably the best Nintendo has done out of ALL their games, not just Mario. That said the gameplay itself is pretty unfocused.
Super paper mario was great too, didnt appreciate it at the time because i just wanted thousand year door, a recent playthrough made me really love it especially since I knew what I was getting into and my kids too young for the turn based stuff @NoTimeForNoodles

Literally I’m 3 hours in and I don’t notice the frame rate at all because I’m too busy looking at how BEAUTIFUL the game is.
This game is not animated on 1s. Who cares if it's not 60fps
I used to not liking too much the atmosphere in the woods. But this time, I just wanted to stop and admire the view !
I noticed a little bit of the frame rate at the beggining when i started playing, I just finished chapter 1 and I dont notice it no more, the game is so pretty and they nailed it imo

I’m really glad you mentioned the silent majority of gamers who just show up, buy the games, and say nothing about it. Us internet dwellers are too quick to forget about that. A large part of Nintendo’s success is that they haven’t forgotten that demographic, and that’s largely who they try to appeal to.
Yeah, just this video alone, over 100.000 views but only 2000 comments and 7k likes, it's easy to forget how much people silently engage in stuff

I just hope no one is discouraged by the “canceled preorder” thing. I got a copy at Target today with in-store pickup. No preorder necessary. If you want the game, check your local department stores.
Check places like Fred Meyers as well, with lesser video game focus. They're usually the one place I can find games when Target/Walmart/Best Buy are sold out.

@@TheRealDman765 For companies it helps give them a raw understanding of the marketing and potential popularity of the game. I know companies that cancelled or delayed games I worked on as a tester because preorder numbers weren't just low, they were aggressively embarrassing. Meaning marketing was failing those games so hard the project was likely doomed. I remember a Castlevania game that was reviewed rather harshly near the tail end of the 360/ps3 era immediately followed up with preorders that contained copies of a secondary Castlevania title in order to pump numbers up since the game was never going to manage it on its own at a time the company in question was desperate for money.
Preorders can also help, with games that offer those early 3-6 day playsessions (or play sessions months in advance for launch) for their MP branch, companies deduce if their servers can handle the load, or if there will be an issue. Sometimes this helps, but more often as someone involved in those projects, its a total crapshoot and tells you nothing. If you extrapolate data to have servers capable of hosting 200k players concurrently as your overhead, "optimistic" answer, and you instead get 280k trying to play, you tend to get negative PR for something that's really not within your control.
For a game like Paper Mario TYD's remake, its more something for shareholders to look into and to guess early physical numbers. An example being, Nintendo vastly misunderstood the potential of that Nintendo LABO game based on preorders and marketing, and stores were overstocked in advance of an expected rush. Nintendo notoriously underships physical games to avoid this scenario typically (to keep prices artificially high on first party titles, which tells you how much they believed in the title versus the reality at launch. Hence they try to avoid that scenario.
I've played every Paper Mario except for the first two. And while I loved the newer installments, I finally see what everyone is talking about. TTYD should be the STANDARD for the series... Never knew just how much I was missing out on

Feeling kinda awful because I've been waiting for such a remake to come out for years, and now that it's here... I just don't have that much money to spend on a video game right now. I know I'm only one person and me buying it or not isn't going to make a meaningful difference, but still. I hope it does well. I hope this will inspire them to produce other games in the same vein.

I bought TTYD because of you, Arlo. By the time I was old enough to play and enjoy video games, the GameCube was old news. I grew up on the Wii and DS, with no easy access to GameCube games. Everyone I've seen online has said that TTYD is the best Paper Mario, and for the longest time I've been sad that I hadn't had a chance to play it. But now I can. I bought it day one, and I intend to play through as much as I can this weekend. And I like to think I wouldn't even be saying this right now if not for your Remaster TTYD campaign video however many years ago. So thank you for this experience.

Just buy it and play when you feel ready to do it. Sales in the first week and month are detrimental to measurimg the game's success.

There was only one good thing in Sticker Star. *ONE SINGULAR GREAT MOMENT,* that I think most people really enjoyed in Sticker Star, and that was Birdo’s cameo.

I bought the game for two reasons, one: I never played the original; and two: it looks fun and I want Nintendo to make more remasters.
I was nine years old when the original came out and I’m 29 this year I’m so happy to be able to play it again. I might even show it to my nephew because I know he likes Mario. He’s nine years old now set for rogue port boys
I know Super Paper Mario was really good and does it's own amazing things, but it wasn't "Mario's Story 3", it's "Super Paper Mario 1". I want Mario's Story 3

@@user-jh4gj5ps2r I’m super conflicted on super paper Mario. I finished it when it came out and didn’t think highly of it. I have tried coming back to it multiple times and never get past the second chapter. I want to play paper Mario, not this platforming mess. The combat is annoying and boring, and it always drives me away, despite how good the game’s story and worldbuilding are.
@@Tactix_se It's ironic that DPM gets grouped with the "good ones", when on the surface it's more different to the first two than Sticker Star is.
I will defend Origami King until the day I die, that game is genuinely one of my favorites on the switch. That being said it is great getting a paper mario with more traditionnal rpg elements, and I do think it would be for the best for future entries to be more like TTYD.
🙌 TOK FANS RISE UP!!! i think people were way too harsh on it, the only bad thing were the battles and the lack of original designs. and even then they used their limitations to be very creative with the characters. I still think TOK’s art style is stronger but i’m glad that TTYD still looks great and i can get behind things going this way.
i hope they continue with origami king artstyle for environments and ttyd's artstyle for characters

I absolutely got sick of the rotating wheel by the 2nd chapter. Full disclosure still like the game overall because well paper Mario, but I was disappointed. Love TTYD and 64 though

I didn't like Origami King at first. It really gave giving the game a second chance to appreciate what the game was. Through all it's flaws I love that game and Olivia is a national treasure that needs to be preserved for all of humanity lol

Regarding that whole small community that refuses to buy the game, the funny thing is, every single one of them is telling people to speak with their wallets and not support a game with 30fps, but I'm 90% certain this will not send the message they want to Nintendo. If this remake actually performs badly in sales, Nintendo would more likely interpret it as a sign that people don't want classic style Paper Mario, that the public wants them to keep doing what they've been doing with the franchise since Sticker Star. That's what studios/creators do all the time. Consumers will make it really obvious why they're upset, but they'll just ignore the comments and invent their own head-canon as to what's really going on.
It easy for thr game companies to do that as they will retain enough bulk to weather it.
And in nintendo case.. i feel like they cant tell if they got gold or pyrite.
the stage element is my favorite part of combat with the badge system close behind. If they made a another game and you could upgrade the stage or impact it somehow would be sick
Imagine if we got a new Paper Mario game with the same kind of storytelling as Super Paper Mario and the combat and world design of Thousand-Year-Door... I would die of happiness. 😭

For real though. If you put all the best bits of the first three paper marios in a blender you'd basically get the perfect mario rpg.
The local Walmart in the small town where I live had the game available the day before its official release. The copy I bought was already the last one in the case. There’s of course, a good chance that they had more in the back (I’d bet on it tbh), but if that isn’t an indicator of at least SOME interest, than I don’t know what is. And the game itself is performing amazingly. It’s everything I could want in a remake/re-release/remaster of this game and then some. While the original of course has its own charm, this remake is easily of a very close second if not at the same level of quality
If anyone's worried about the frame rate (and apologies if he already talked about this; I haven't finished watching the video) - I can confidently say that it did *not* ruin the experience! I was actually very afraid at first seeing that it would be at 30 FPS: "oh god, action commands are gonna be all screwed up," etc. But I've been playing for hours, and I was pleasantly surprised at how normal it feels.
It's really smooth, and I haven't experienced any battle issues, frame rate drops, or anything like that. I probably would have preferred 60 FPS, but 30 works just fine and it doesn't feel bad at all - at least to me. Give it a shot! I've had a blast so far :) I could go on gushing about all the new things, but those are just my thoughts on the frame rate.
If this TTYD remake is massively successful (for a Paper Mario game) I hope this kinda serves as a soft reboot of the series. Like a "do-over" starting over from where TTYD left off.
I disagree I think they could meld both together keeping the combat but maybe some of that humor in origami king and color splash sprinkled in alongside unique characters and fun moments I also would kinda like if another “fill in the things with stuff” mechanic was implemented in some form as that was extremely fun and could be tied to leveling up as a fourth option.

Color splash did break the fourth wall sometimes but so does ttyd and I would love to see jokes like the “i cant do more without raising the games esrb rating” to still exist but heavily toned down and more rare along the journey making it more special when it happens.

I want to buy it, but the game got announced right AFTER I brought a wii, remote, nunchucks, and gamecube controller just to play the original authentically.
I was basically halfway through the game, so it feels weird to essentially buy it again.
But I really hope it sells well, I want more of these type of games, and MAYBE they might give Mario and Luigi another chance after Nintendo basically made it fail themselves

I have to disagree with the other commenter, RPG is dope. Have fun with it! Here’s a tip: Mario’s Jump ability gains 1 attack every 2 times you use it, so if you use it religiously it’s still a really good attack in the late game!

Has Arlo ever done a video where he discusses his opinions on Super Paper Mario? From all the videos I've seen, he identifies Sticker Star as the primary culprit behind the series' mistakes, yet here he references a desire for a true "Paper Mario 3," which I have always considered SPM to be. If he hasn't made that video yet, I'd certainly be interested in seeing it.
He stated in the recent stream that he really likes Super's story, but would have liked the game a lot more if it were a 64/TTYD-style RPG and not essentially a platformer with RPG elements.

Started playing last night. I can definitely feel the action commands etc being off because of the framerate, but oh well. It still looks amazing and plays fine. Just takes some getting used to re-learning muscle memory.
I plan on buying Thousand Year Door as soon as I get off of work tonight.

Even if this game sells well i wouldn't be surprised if the series continues to go in the direction it HAS been. Like the next paper Mario game might be something in between origami King and the old style.
I went to a small rural Walmart at around 5:00 in the afternoon on launch day and there were only two copies left, And there were at least two maybe three blank adjacent spaces where the games had been stocked. This is going to be a huge success.
I went to my GameStop after work and some one was there in line in front of me getting this game, and the worker said a lot of people have been getting it, I think we might be good, I’m actually gonna cry

I hate to say it, but I don't think nintendo believes in it. When I picked mine up on Thursday, there were only 3 copies left at 10am on launch day. No big display, no empty rows saying sold out. Just 1 row with 3 copies at a busy target. Maybe they already sold a bunch, but with the pre-order cancelations, I feel there is a limited print of the game and unless the same uproar happens like with prime remasted I feel it wont sell many physical copies.
So huge pre orders were being cancelled as they needed more copies in certain places Yeah I think this game will be huge.
Hope this leads to super getting a remake and some ttyd type sequel

Yeah, it's definitely scary to think about it. Like, now that some amount of hope has been revived with this remake, it will only sting all the more if Nintendo decides to dismiss the classic Paper Mario formula again. I'm confident it's selling at least reasonably well, as preorders have often been sold out and even have had to be cancelled in some cases, but whether or not the sales matter at the end of the day remains to be seen. As we know all too well, Nintendo just tends to do their own thing, irrespective of whether it's actually in their best interest or not. I almost just wish I could look 5 years into the future and see what ultimately happens just so I don't have to worry about it anymore.
Yeah my worry is that they won't take these sales seriously either way, and just put this out as a public relations "win" that coincidentally pads out their schedule before a new console release.
At the end of the day companies want money. My guess is this is very similar to what they did with Mario Party Superstars. I think that’s Nintendo’s admission sometimes they need to go backwards to find the gameplay people love again. Just my guess though. I would think the sales and them doing what they did with Mario Party should give people hope but I’m guessing it’s sales at the end of the day.
If this does well maybe, just maybe, it'll finally convince Nintendo to fully return to what made Paper Mario so good before and turn away from all the things wrong with it currently.

you've covered multiple times about the interviews saying old PM is dead and they arent allowed to make them like that anymore. these are exceptions 1) because they're remakes and 2) its a cash grab because they know the demand

Haven’t played a paper Mario game since I was a kid and it was 1000 year door. After watching this video I’m gonna buy it for nostalgia and also try to beating the game as I didn’t get passed the intro due to my GameCube being broken

I'm really hoping Thousand Year Door does well. As much as I wish sales weren't really the deciding factor, I am hoping it does well. It took THIS long just to get it remastered, so maybe there might be hope?
I mean, think about it like this: Dinosaur Planet (the game that was turned into Star Fox Adventures) now exists the way it was meant to, and there are people who are doing their utmost to have it be finished. I don't know how far along the most recent patch for the game is, but it personally makes me happy seeing these people be real heroes, making an old Rare project resurface as it was intended to be. Even when indies don't always wow me, fan projects still can.

This is the first time I’ve ever played TTYD. My first gaming console was a Wii so I never had a GameCube to play the original on. But I’ve KNOWN of the game for a while. I knew like a lot of the major story beats, the final boss, etc. Even though I haven’t played the older games, I’ve been a paper Mario fan (and Mario fan in general) since I can remember. I was kinda excited that this was coming out and I’d finally get a chance to play it. I bought the game on the e-shop the day it came out and nothing could’ve prepared me for the overwhelming charm and plain FUN I’d get out of this game.
This game is able to both have the charm of old games while looking as beautiful as modern games and that’s INSANE. I’m sitting in my car outside a game stop today because you know what I just did? I bought the game AGAIN. I bought the physical copy because I was worried about being able to play the game without WiFi while I’m on flights these next coming days for a trip.
This game is so good that I, a Gen Z kid who never played the original, have bought it twice.

I intend to buy Thousand Year Door at some point... But its just so inconvenient right now, cause my Switch doesn't have enough storage space for a digital copy. I'll have to either order it or go to the store myself in order to get it.
You can archive games you aren't playing and make some space, if that's an option.
