- Where is the best places to buy wood for woodworking projects? There are so many wood choices for woodworking. I buy lumber for my DIY furniture and other projects from a variety of places both local and online depending on the wood species. I like to buy from local lumber yards if possible but have also bought a lot of lumber from Home Depot and Lowes to build my woodworking projects. Buying construction grade lumber for woodworking projects can be challenging because it is very hard to find straight boards. I show you how to find wood for your projects. Also we will discuss where to buy hardwood for projects both locally and online. Here is all the basic info you need to get started buying lumber. You can buy wood online for your woodworking projects both large and small. Below are links to the places I recommend. In this video, I show you where to find hardwood for woodworking projects. I even bought a variety box of hardwood from Amazon and open it on this video. Amazon and other affiliate links are used in this description and they help support this channel.

Hey bro! Love your channel. It’s nice to see a fellow Christian woodworker/youtuber. My question is; what app do you use to edit video? Getting tired of iMovie. I’ve uploaded over 100 videos using it but I think it’s time to make a change.
Arkansas has a bunch wood mills, i don't live there i am in Oklahoma near eastern boarder with Arkansas.
Checked out your advice on where to find hardwood lumber. You were ‘spot’ on. Thanks again
Thank you
My little tip for buying lumber at Lowe's or Home Depot: buy the 16-ft lengths if you can. They come from the lower part of the tree that's more stable, and they sit on the shelves longer because not as many people use them, so they have a longer time to dry out and show any twist. Take your battery circ saw with you and cut them up in the parking lot to fit them in your vehicle if needed.
I only buy 2x4s if doing actual construction projects. For woodworking type stuff, I just buy 2x10s and 2x12s and rip them down on the table saw.
That is excellent information! Thank you
Great tip! I would not have thought of that otherwise! Lowe's here in Rapid CIty, SD has terrible quality wood, but I'll have to go back and check out their longer boards! No Home Depots within 5 hours of me.
The box stores will usually cut them in half for you as well. Depending on the store, there may be a small cut fee.
" Take your battery circ saw with you and cut them up in the parking lot to fit them in your vehicle if needed." THE BEST ADVICE EVER!
That's awesome advice! I never thought it through like that but that makes perfect sense. Thanks!
One other thing, the reason I subscribed was due to your woodworking. But, I've come to love this channel because you seem like an amazing person that loves God and his wife. Keep doing what you're doing brother.
Thank you 🙏🏻
Amen, brother!
SAAAAAME!
Well said.
🙏🇺🇲💪 that's right
Man, the way you speak of your wife is absolutely heartwarming!
And that, "Mrs. 731" is hilarious!
This is the very reason why I like this channel. It reminds me why I began learning woodworking in the first place: for my wife and my daughter. I didn't want to be that Dad my little girl couldn't rely on to fix anything... So I learned how to fix and build anything for her and my wife. Actually, I'm going to go and let them know I love them very much! Thank yall, my friend's.
Ahhh, Married life,Took the wife to the Bahamas for our 30th anniversary. On our 40th anniversary decided to go back and get her.😂🤪
Ouch lol
Just about curled over laughing. Good one
I usually go to menards for lumber. Huge selection. Also I'm with you on the window shopping. I look at the same tools I just looked at 2 weeks ago, and have looked at on the internet 100 times.
lol
Matt I'm so glad that I was able to stumble upon you and your wife's channel. I recently just started being interested in wood working and helping father in law with projects for me and my wife helps too. I'm glad to find a Christian wood working channel. God bless you both
I discovered your channel about two days ago. I have a full-time job as a production supervisor and a part-time job as an associate pastor. I started doing woodworking back in December and I have watched a lot of RUclips channels to help me get started. But this one is by far my favorite! I feel like I have already watched 10 of your videos. I am extremely grateful for the content that you release! God bless brother!
The marriage testimony is awesome! My wife and I are exactly the same. The odd thing is that people close to us think that it’s abnormal to spend so much time together and “we should want our own space and time.” If that’s abnormal, I’m grateful we are! #lovenomatterwhat #gracenomatterwhat #yourspouseisyourbestfriend
Exactly same here. Everyone things we are the weird ones lol
@@731Woodworks My wife and I have that "problem" too. We took a road trip where our longest stint together in the car was 14 hours (stopping to eat and pit stops of course) and we just loved the time together. When we tell others that, they are usually like, "We would've been at each others throats if we were in the car that long together." God is good all the time. Especially when you keep Him first. Both my wife and I want to be second in each other's lives.
That’s awesome and rare these days! You’re certainly blessed
@@731Woodworks All I can say is, AMEN! And, I forgot to thank you for the great video. Thank you.
Me too. 42 years and counting
My buddy and I were talking about the outrageous prices on lumber. He told me to go see his friend at this warehouse for garage doors 'cause they always have lumber lying around. I didn't have my hopes up. When I tell you my eyes turned into hearts! 😍 They GAVE me 65 2x6x8's! The first thing I had to do when I got home was build 2 sawhorses to stack it all on lol 2x6x8's are $10.63 at the Home Depot here.
Good deal
Where are you from if you don’t mind me asking?
My wife and do A LOT, together!!! We love every minute of it. We're 25 years! God bless you guys!
Keep listening to Mrs 731! Thanks for doing what you do!
This account has a criminally low sub count for the quality you produce.
Thank you. It's growing fast
Just got a new sub from this video 👍
Thank you 👊🏻
Saw the video on getting wood from Amazon, I tried it and OMG(gosh), the wood was awesome, started making cutting boards and a lazy Susan, Thanks for the Tip, I really like your videos, even purchased a couple of plans.
Awesome
You had me at “I coulda made a hundred rocking chairs.” 🤣🤣🤣 New subscriber 👊🏽
lol 👊🏻
Pro tip at HD: On warped wood, ask for a discount and negotiate it. My local mgr knows if it isn't at least 15%, its not going to happen. Now I have the space to wet and clamp and straighten, or just mill that 4/4 down. It doesn't have to be perfect. It just has to come with a discount.
I don’t think there can ever be too many mallet videos as each one is unique.
Thanks
Thank you Matt! It's wonderful that you speak so freely about your feelings! Unfortunately, most men don't!
I’ve been looking for this information!! Thank you.
Would definitely like to see a mallet video.
Noted!
Definitely grate idea on a mallet video😁
Me too, but I'm really suspect about that... Because I love mallets. 😬
I second this request! :)
Mallet video is on the channel now
Future sawdust. Haha! I like that and I'm stealing it just FYI.
That gave me a chuckle too :)

Future sawdust is good.. my wife is a crafter, so she calls sawdust. MAN GLITTER.. Thank You for the great videos .
Thank you
1st time visitor, newbie explorer to your world of woodworking. thank you for your sincerity and love you express and share.
Matt, I come for the woodworking and stay for the humor. Throw in the Mrs and I had a smile the whole time. Thank you. More videos of you guys, please!
Thanks!
7 minutes in and I'm hooked. I can watch ya'll all day! Love it and thank you.
thanks
I buy my lumber from my local Amish sawmills. The closest one is just a 5 minute drive so its most certainly convenient.
that's awesome
You're a lucky dog. I live in Tucson Arizona flat desert no sawmills, hardwood is expensive here. I can drive 4 hours to Lumber Mills in the mountains but, down and dead Mesquite and Ironwood are plentiful. I go deep into the desert and chainsaw my own, rip down to usable pieces, but no Amish 'round these parts pard. Got lucky once I still have two 2"x14"x6' ironwood slabs, I'm just waiting for them to talk to me and tell me what project they want to be.
Glad you involve your wife a lot. Love your positive attitude
Just wanted to say thank you for sharing your knowledge in these videos. Like you I'm a lucky man. 48 yrs with my bride and you can bet I'd do it again. My only blind date who initially turned me down. Everything went fine until I answered the question, "why aren't you working, where have you been? The answer in the Navy wasn't what she was looking for. She simply said "I don't date sailors i assured her i didn't either. By the way owes has designated parking for vets 4a 10% discount. Those of us serving in the 60s didn't expect to be able to use the sidewalk. I hope vets patronize Lowes.
Thank you for your service!
Mrs 731 is beautiful, congratulations on 20 years, Me and Hubby had our 20 years anniversary this March too!
Thank you. Yes she is! Congrats to you too
Last year my buddy and I went to a cabinet shop outside of town and checked out the pallets of scraps and let me tell you, they had a lot of pallets of hardwood scraps. Prices ranged from $50 to $300. We bought one for $150 at $75 each and holy crow just half of that was a lot of wood. I'm still using it today. I will probably see if he wants to go in on another pallet soon. We got a great variety of wood like oak, maple, poplar, some walnut although not much of that and some type I think is alder but not too sure. Mostly panels of various sizes, some large some small. Any rate if you have a cabinet shop nearby check them out.
Another great video Matt. Thanks.
Good info thanks
Wow. I used to live Monticello about 4 years ago. Wish I had found this then!
2nd piece of lumber (greenish tint) is poplar.
Great work on the videos and keep serving the Lord until the nets are full!
thanks
When I've gotten hardwood in Little Rock, I've gotten it from Sunset Hardwood. They are super nice and have a decent selection too.
Awesome. Thanks
I love you brother. I know how much you love your wife, because it reminds me of how I feel about my wife. You make me laugh in all of your videos, always informative, always entertaining. Thank you.
Thank you
Fellow Arkansas woodworker here. Used to do construction, but became a teacher. At the start of Spring break, when we went virtual at school, wife got a booth in Russellville and had me make shelves, benches, and other simple things since she thought I was bored. It is a small booth, so only have a few things at a time. My skill has gotten better. Been watching your videos for tips. Done a few custom shelves, bit finally got an order for a farmhouse table! Spent an hour at Lowes looking for lumber... There are good pieces, you just have to go through the entire stack.
Hello neighbor!
Heck yes on the mallet video. Awesome info thank you. I completely agree buy local, but small.
Mallet video is here: ruclips.net/video/ymS8qQELWdI/видео.html
Love the marriage comedy, but love the faith and love shown!! Most of my wood i collect myself from naturally felled trees for my clocks, but for other projects I usually go to the local lowes or the sawmill thats an hr away, depends on what they've been cutting recently!! Would love to see a mallet video, and I appreciate all the hints and tips, thanks for taking the time for this!! God Bless and virtual 👊!!
Thank you
Bring on the mallet video I like the looks of yours and would like to see how you do it. Bless You Brother !!

Lol the tool window shopping! I do that every time! Especially when I got my eye out for those clearance tags
Thank you about the hardwood lumber find tip, which I tried and found a place 20 minutes away from me that I never knew about till you gave me that tip on hardwood lumber in my city the area close by. 👍🏻👍🏻
Awesome
Love Bartons here in Kennett, but lumber is getting so hard to find, and all the prices went up. When I do go there in forced to go to the big box stores, and like you said, a lot of it is bowed and twisted.
Here's you a cool tip a lot of people don't know. If you go to Bartons, and you see any damage what so ever in the lumber, they sell it to you 1/2 price. So say you see a 1x6 with the end chipped, go up front tell them, and it's yours 1/2 price.
Good tip, thanks
I'm in northern colorado and I buy a lot from Western Hardwoods in Wellington. Great prices, selections change, and it's run by veterans!
Awesome. Lucky to have a place like that!
Oh thank you Don you just saved me from having to search, i'm in southeast Wyoming and was just going to start looking for a hardwood dealer, ran by veterans is even better!

Enjoy the video and the buying tips. Now buying my domestic and foreign hardwoods online as the quality is great and wood already has been sanded on all 4 sides. Currently buying from Barrington Hardwoods in Crystal Lake , IL.
Do you think you could do a quick video on how you choose the wood for a project and how to tell if it is good/bad/ect?
Thank you for the idea. I’ll look into it
VERY INTERESTED!!!!!!!
Here is my best guess for your wood just from the couple seconds I could see them, in the order you pulled them out. Number 1,3,4,5 and 7 all look like cherry or red oak. 2 and 6 are definitely poplar. 8 does look like maple. Don't know about the cut offs. The red one is definitely cedar. The darker brown one is walnut. Next to last look like cherry again. Last one may be ash or white oak. Hope this helps
thank you!
Agreed. Also 2 and 6 are 100% poplar and the purple one has got to be purple heart
I ordered this box and got red oak, white oak, ash, poplar, a little walnut, a piece or two of maple and a very nice piece of purple heart. My thoughts are your box was very similar, and neither box had any cherry. It's easy to tell the white oak from the red as the white oak is noticeably more dense and thus heavier (also the color is a little different). White oak is prized for boat building since it's tough and resistant to the elements (and the reason the USS Constitution got its nickname, "Old Ironsides"). Anyway, there are good pieces in this box for mallets, small jewelry boxes or other small projects. I will buy it again.
Thanks for sharing
Reminds me of trips to Home Depot and Lowes with my gf (hopefully future fiance). Thanks for helping getting me into woodworking.
Mr. 731, I would like to thank you for your content, you truly are a blessing. Sure I dont know you from a whole in the wall but between the content you share and the character you are with your holy walk, you continue to show that God is good. Keep em coming bud and God Bless.

YES! do a mallet video!!!!!! Most videos assume you know a lot and leave out steps or use equipment the average garage shop doesn't have. You explain things better and use equipment most woodworkers have.

I’m a beginner woodworker and I’ve been binge watching your videos. I really appreciate your tips and advice. I’m currently stationed in Texas and have access to a harbor freight. For someone who’s still in the process of buying all the “essential” tools would you recommend using harbor freight to save money or spend the little extra money on name brand?
Sure. Lots of people buy from there and like it. I have several clamps from there I use.
@@731Woodworks sweet, thank you for your response. God bless
HF is good to start out and then just set aside a set amount of profit for tools. Upgrade as you need
Harbor Freight blades and bits aren't good quality. Some Bauer Tools and the Hercules line are good tools.
True, Home Depot does have a 10% military discount. I use it every time even on a $2 item xD
nice
I always wonder if there are any contractors in the Guard, but I am sure their bulk discounts would be at least as good.
Lowes will also do military discount.
Ace does a military discount, but they do not always give me 10%. One time I received a 1¢ discount on a $50 purchase!
I was polite and respectful. Her customer service was lacking before the discount.
Home Depot and Lowe's are three times as far away as Ace, so I make the drive for better prices if I plan on spending more than about $5.

Awesome! Thank you!
The green gave away the poplar!
The small piece he grabs at ~15:54 is almost certainly walnut
My experience has been Home Depot is slightly higher than Lowe's. Sometimes think a little better selection. This gets me to what Dad said for years,You get what you pay for. I am further north and all of our walnut is medium to dark brown and sme even have a burgundy tint.

For a project idea, I took your design idea of the TV bench cabinet video and I modified it to hold two 5 gallon water bottles. I was able to fit one inside the cabinet and the is one with the spigot on the top. It was a fun project because I was able to practice the techniques you showed but on a smaller scale item. I now have orders for 3 of them for friends. I will be doing the TV Bench also but I will move the back in about 3"-4" to allow for the wall plugs and still be able to have it against the wall. I am also going to be cutting a cable way access hole in the top behind the TV pedestal base to bring the power and coaxial cable to the TV.... Thanks for the inspiration 👊

Wow 1.5 hrs one way just to go to home depot and lowes. As a new woodworker thats something i never thought i would take for granted.
