Guess you guys aren't ready for that yet...but your kids are gonna love it.
PERFECT
I saw that too! Great comment
This comment is underrated
Easy McFly they ain't ready for it
I love his music and I am in my 50s
The best performance in SNL history.
I love how Sturgill checks in on each of his band members during the performance to ensure they are kicking the appropriate amount of ass during this banger. My all time favorite SNL performance.
Yes, it’s my favorite performance too! Sturgill and the boys raised the bar that night! I watch this all the time!
Here to check in that this still holds up as the best snl performance ever
It makes me want to light all the cigarettes in a pack in 4 about minutes, learn to play the trumpet, C walk, wake my kids up to show them this video, and use aqua net as a flame thrower.
Exactly how I feel about this epic performance
Badass as all hell and when them horns start a blowing the eargasm begins this is just straight fukin fun
Yup…it still is
FEAR
Agreed. 100%
This country singer just gave one of the most rock 'n roll performances I've ever seen. He used every inch of that stage and played the hell out of a protest song on live TV with a Star Wars patch on his guitar. Incredible...
Not just a Star Wars patch... a Star Wars Rebel patch.
So what did you think of Sturgills new album? The Ballad of Dude and Juanita is a modern classic, in my opinion.
@@strings1586 I think it's great, all of his albums are bangers.
@@strings1586the fact that it’s one continuous stories in several different styles Is so amazing.
💯 kick ASS🎵🤘🏻
After seeing this performance live and watching about 300 times on this channel and all I can say is this, it's almost 2024 and the music world could use a strong dose of Sturgill Simpson.
Looks like we're gonna get it... well at least in the form of Johnny Blue Skies
@@Skywalkaaa YES! Got tickets today for me and my son October 4!
I got tickets today for October 9th. Me and the bestie! Saw him open for Willie Nelson, but he didn't have the horn section.
@@carlamitchell7467 I'd walk over hot coals to get some tickets to see him.
2 years later this still makes me wanna get in a high speed police chase
Chris Preston Yes! Yes, it does!
Cool comment, love it
and then immediately after you play sing along
Welp....I'm glad I'm not the only one...
@goddessofamonkeyman I was traveling through Alabama and was pulled over for 92 in a 70. I told the patrol man "freebird" was on the radio and I apologized. He let me go
Sturgill knew the significance of the moment and acted accordingly. Legendary performance.
Was it about Trump's inauguration?
@@jackmace6531 No
@@SS-fu7dd no
@@jackmace6531 Trump started no new wars and NEVER agreed with Middle East interference because he knew it would destabilize the region. Nothing in this song reflects trump… tds?
@@MLHMODZ Pretty sure it's about Trump my dude. It's a protest song. And look at the date it was performed
He is so incredibly talented it's scary. But since he isn't singing about dirt roads, trucks and beer, he never gets a sniff of being pushed on radio. This guys has more talent than anyone pretending to be a Country artist today.
Bo Burnham my man.
Pop country on the radio for damn near the last 2 decades isnt country.
Check out Tyler Childers and Whiskey Myers if you're looking for some good music.
He doesn't want the radio. He could have saved country music but realised it wasn't worth saving.
I’m a prisoner to this video and I cannot leave. Don’t you dare send help.
Even worse, he's singing about true events that [they] don't want us to know about.
I agee , soo many great performances country n rock .. I can't get enough of him. Billy string is pretty bad ass too
That bass player is definitely their dungeon master on the tour bus D&D games.
Hilarious but I'm betting these boys don't do much D&D on the road....unless......
Every bass player is the DM. Source: Bass player & DM
HAHAHA
Now roll for save vs. death, mo fo... See how funny you are now.
I feel like he took it from the trumpet player and trumpet dude is waiting for his chance...
One thing they don't do on the bus though............no dumping allowed!!!
When you realize, most of the audience doesn’t know who you are, so you’re gonna make damn sure they remember the next 5 minutes.
💯
let's hear it for tight motherfuckin' horn sections
Hell yea and my boy slayed the damn keys
No doubt. Have watched this video a ton of times just b/c of the brass section. I hope they catch your comment because they def deserve the accolades.
The horns!!
Absolutely, you rarely hear horns mesh well in this kind of format. But they just completely crush it. Simpson is a true talent as a writer and how to put great talent around him.
Fooooo sure!!!!
That last scene when he throws the guitar down feels like he's issuing a challenge to modern country
And about F'ing time someone does!
Hell to the fuckin' yeah Brandon!!!
And the keyboards end up on their side!!
Dude, I think he looks like he's challenging anyone that wants to step up
Modern country couldn't touch this
Wife and I saw him live in Cleveland and they played this hard for 2 straight hours. No opening act, just came out, started crushing, and left. I've never been a huge country fan because it all kind of sounds like the same top 40 nonsense to me, but Sturgill is something different and I can't get enough.
He's great
Then you haven't been listening to actual country, my man. You'll rarely find it on the radio.
He and Stapleton and Cody Jinks are keeping the spirit of country alive
true dat
He and Ol' Wheeler are my faves. They break the mold. And if you'll notice, both have unconventional song topics and draw much more heavily from bluegrass and rockabilly than their contemporaries. In other words, they make music the way the old greats used to. They followed the stream to the source, then forged their own path, instead of succumbing to multi-generational derivision.
This may be the greatest performance I've ever seen on SNL leave it to sturgill Simpson to knock it off itz rockers🇱🇷
I saw Sturgill a couple months before they played SNL and this is the only video that captures how amazing they are live.
You must be very young
I think it’s the best I’ve ever seen. And I’m 61
@@debradiamond8285 I agree sturgill is certainly a one-off no one like him 🤘🎵
Check out Chris Stapleton’s SNL performances with SS playing along.
This is by far the best live performance I’ve ever seen. I think I’ve watched it well over 100 times and always catch something new. Each of these musicians feed off of each other’s energy and are clearly impressed with each other’s performance. The smiles on their faces, the keyboard surfing, the incredible trumpet solo and the cymbal crashing to the ground are just a few of the highlights that have brought tears to my eyes while watching. Absolutely incredible, Sturgill really let them shine and pulled off something amazing.
Gaddanm right
So right! Agree
Right there with you, Jason. When that baritone sax starts honkin' at 1:53 I 'm in heaven!
the other 2 guys in the horns LOVED the trumpet solo, for very good reason.
I actually knew the trumpeter back when he was playing with the Piedmont Souprize in Virginia! Scott Frock's his name and he's excellent - my family and I would go see the band play all the time at various places around Richmond, and it was such a surreal feeling to see him with Sturgill on here, at the Grammys, etc. Great guy and a fantastic musician.
3:42 Dude was rocking so hard his cymbal came off. This is the best SNL performance I've seen in a long time, I've watched this video almost as many times as I've seen Star Wars.
@Mark Perrine And then almost kicked the keyboard stand off the stage
I loved how they all cracked up when his cymbal went flyin!
It's absolutely killer. Another old school one that blew the roof off was Neil young and crazy horse going rocking in the free world
I just posted that. I've seen high hats lost their top and I've seen entire cymbal stands fall, but I have never seen the cymbal fly completely off the stand.
@@brandonlbartlett That's the only comparable one I can think of, as far as matching energy levels.
This... this is perfect.
If this is where country is going back to, sign me the fuck up.
Agreed! No more California fake as fuck accent bullshit. Sadly Country music is now having homosexual rape of the devil, from again California.

One of the best performances in SNL history. Keep it up ya'll.

One of the best performances anywhere, anytime
7 years later and this still kicks ass
I go back and watch this once in a while.... because I start remembering what a great performance it was... and then I start doubting my memory and I start thinking, "Nah, it couldn't have been THAT great a performance". But then I watch it again and I'm like "Oh yeah it was!" Man, they KILLED it.
Right? KILLED IT!!
Still coming back.
This is and always will be my favorite performance. This is the standard all musicians should strive to attain.
That was extreme high energy. But, don't miss the trees for the forest. This song is all about the lyrics.
He knows some shit about the gov't controlling international drug markets. I had old school servicemen tell me some shit along those lines that I'd rather not discuss on here.
I'm a veteran so I'll tell you. The USA controls the world drug trade to finance their Black ops around the globe. This opioid epidemic is no accident. Just like the crack epidemic before it. At long last someone playing like it matters, fuck yeah
Clearly, Sturgill and the boys thought, "We might only be on SNL once, so let's burn it the fuck DOWN!"
legend has it... they are still repairing the decimated stage after that remarkable performance ;)
Still one of the best performances I've ever watched. You can absolutely tell they left everything on the stage after that performance. You can tell they were feeling it 100%.
The best musical performance in SNL history. And I've been watching since 1975.
Better than Prince in 1989 and 2006?
@@Kickinthescience yup

Check it out again. Sturgill actually hits it off with his guitar lol.

It's a good thing, too...lord knows Kentucky doesn't have much else to be proud of these days.
Love when you see a band just having the time of its life. Outstanding!
That shit just changed my life! I felt like Sturgill was shooting rays of energy from his mind's eye at all of his bandmates! The energy was exhilarating!
4:17 Love when the organ gets kicked and the guy is wrestling to get it back into position while still playing. This video has so much nuance. I absolutely love the entire performance!!!

This will always be one of my favourite live performances. No GD question.
Yup, I come back and watch it pretty much weekly after seeing it on snl live that night lol
I’m here from watching Sound & Fury on Netflix.
This performance?
Good. Grief.
Check Sugar Daddy out if you like. This is probably the best live thing you will see anywhere. Maybe Life Ain't Fair or some of the Sunday Valley stuff holds a candle to this too.
He and his band lit that stage absolutely on fire that night. So incredible.
SNL had better be careful, more stuff like this and they might become culturally relevant again
bewbies1
Amen
yeah, they might get some ratings similar to Hee-Haw in the 80's... if they could only become relevant to folks beyond incorporation...
Right on! I remember seeing the Patti Smith Group in April 1976 when I was a kid. Tom Waits, Elvis Costello, The B-52s, Kate Bush, Marianne Faithfull, and The Spcials, etc. too. They def used to have the cutting edge music of the day. Something went wrong with all of the Justin Timberlake like shit they booked for awhile.

that trumpet player has some pipes holy cow.
This was the first time I'd ever heard Sturgill perform. It opened up a whole new world.

Loved the drummer here. Hard steady beat the entire time, and doesn't miss a step when Sturgill knocks his cymbal off and continues on using the edge of another. Just an awesome performance period.
Miles Miller is the motherfucking man. Go watch some of his livestreamed shit on IG. Hes coming out with an album soon. Killer voice.
Saw it live on TV and it never disappoints probably one of the the best live performances that SnL has ever had pure rock and roll 🍻
Definitely the best, realest performance I've seen on SNL.
I kept waiting for Baluchi to come across the stage doing backflips.
I have to put in a vote for Elvis Costello's "Less than Zero/Radio Radio" (banned from SNL for a good 20 years after that!) -- but this just about ties it. ruclips.net/video/kSOZ4mQAjOQ/видео.html
Nothing can get more real that FEAR
It's Like Waylon Jennings and Creedence Clearwater had a love child and wrote him a song. Van Morrison, Molly Hatchet, and Keith Whitley are his uncles.
I dig it
And a little Pete Townsend for the finale.
Could not have described it better!
And James Hetfield is the kids God Father. Just for a little And Justice...
Might be the best description I've ever heard....
This man’s music is so tied into my family and our history and my relationship with my father. He’s from Breathitt county originally and my family is all from/many still in Magoffin County which is next to Breathitt. I saw this performance live while I was in a penitentiary in Ohio, where I was born and raised, and called my dad immediately the next morning to tell him “you gotta look this guy up” not even knowing he was that close to where my family come from. I’ll never get to tell him but his link to my life, my relationship with my dad, and my family history will forever be a big part of me. He named his debut album “High Top Mountain” which I knew was a cemetery on top of a hill/mountain in Kentucky where his family is buried, while a lot of my family is buried on Cow Creek just a couple miles away. Maybe one day I’ll get to tell him, but God Bless this man for his work and for him always being himself.

I gotta admit, I never heard of Stirgill and his band before watching them on SNL. I will never forget them now.
They're all excellent musicians, but I especially love the drummer's steady driving beat. Somebody, tell me about these guys!

DPB1947 You haven't even scratched the surface. Pace yourself. ;)
If you do Amazon Prime you can get all 3 of his albums.
My hubby's been a Sturgill fan since long before he got the bid in SNL and he got me into him too. Love his sound!
Start at the beginning, he had this band called Sunday Valley that was some sort of brilliant bluegrass punk thing, then work your way through his three solo albums. He keeps evolving but it is all honest music, that's the thing with him just when you think you have him figured out he just builds and goes somewhere else, he just does whatever the hell he wants to. He is a great talent.
Pretty sure about 3,400 of these views are from me. Best performance ever.
Yo hat’s off to the camera crew, so much going on and all the details captured. I love this performance so much!
Hell yeah. They've killed it for years. Keep on truckin,' Sturgill!!

He and the band are PERFECT examples of live music done the right way...full soul, no hesitation, and all awesome.
Seven years later, I still watch this every now and then when I need a pump of adrenaline. It is a top three performance with Elvis Costello's "Radio, Radio" and Nirvana's debut in '91.

This is amazing foot stomping get up and dance music. Every time I watch it my heart starts racing. Even though the drummer loses a crash cymbal they keep right up and going. You can tell how much fun they were having.
To all you listening to this on a phone, do yourself a favorite and throw on some good headphones or play through a decent stereo and pay attention to the instrumentation. Amazing.

Sound and fury brought me here... Now I have been blessed. Yes!
This goes unbelievably hard; the godfather of the new outlaw country but he plays maybe the most rock-n-roll set SNL has seen, also a navy vet but singing a blatantly anti-war/US imperialism song, all while shredding on his guitar with nothing but a star wars rebel alliance sticker on it. And then I read an interview where he describes his political affiliation as anarchist... excuse me, sir, I can only get so hard.
Love the energy, especially when Sturgill knocks the drummer's crash cymbal off the stand at 3:44 lmao. This is what rock n' roll is supposed to sound like!
