You know, listening to the studio stuff I always assumed it was a vol pedal. You gotta have some real touch to incorporate the knob to steadily get that sound.
I’ve never missed Kentucky more than when I hear this high lonesome sound. I’m pretty sure he’s the greatest artist of our time. We’re lucky to have him.
I saw this episode when it aired. I remember almost turning it off when I saw it was a "country" band. It had been so long since I heard anything that was actual country that I just didn't have the heart to sit through another pile of fake country pooh. This right here was a breath of fresh country air. It was like a ghost from the past peeking its head out to remind the industry what country is supposed to be. Amazing live performance.
John Moreland, Jason Isbell, Tyler Childers, Sierra Farrell, Brent Cobb… The list goes on. Check out the GemsOnVHS and WesternAF channels here on RUclips as well as W.B. Walker’s Old Soul Radio Show for finding great country/alt-country/americana/folk musicians.
Ward Davis just mentioned watching this performance today. He was paying the bills in Nashville and hating his life. He said Sturg gave him hope. It was his "I don't need Nashville" moment of clarity.
@@quenemoendThat’s funny, because there is a video of Stur playing live, and he says, “I get so tired of being told I sound like that other guy that I decided to play one of his songs!” He then does a really good version of Waymore Blues
How in the HELL does this sound so much better than the album version? Sometimes artists sound better live due to better communication of character, emotion, overall vibe... and all that’s happening here, but he sounds AMAZING in terms of technicality and vocal precision. Blows my mind.
The entire album was made for like $3000 their hands were kinda tied so they gave it old antic kinda sound to cover bad production plus a few years practice has happened and I think maybe a different 🎸 player. Idk. None of this may be true. But I heard it somewhere
Sturgill is such a treasured artist. reminds me so much of Waylon. This song and this specific line is just incredible song writing - "Hoping them circles don't call back telling me to start today" If you are under, I dont know, I guess 40, this line will pass you by. Put if you ever needed a job and all you had was the want ads, then this line is a complete mike drop
Conan "That was great " as if he were surprised... The look inSturgil's eyes.."whathe f@ck'dya'll expect" Lol Apparently that was Conans first time seeing Sturgil perform..

This is one of the most under appreciated country hippie rockers of our time and never gets radio play.
Yes he is, but us beer drinking back road cruisers appreciate him greatly! lol
I love sturgil and I don't want him on the radio. Long live sturgill!
He’s way too good for modern radio
Not under appreciated at all. Even the pop country folks know he's the best.
The only radio station I've ever heard him on is the hard rock station that occasionally plays songs by Cannibal Corpse
I heard this guy on Spotify and straight up thought it was classic country from the 70s. Shame he deserves way more recognition.
Conan: “You killed that.”
Sturgill’s brain: “I know.”
The way Laur plays with the volume knob and makes it sound like a pedal steel is just incredible. He’s too damn good
He closed the door on playing country, which is a shame. Incredible musician, but he's playing with Drivin n Cryin now.
So seemless you almost can't notice it.
Started scrolling to look for this comment. Incredible control. Hat off 🎩
Holy shit- didn’t even notice this until you pointed it out

Well now we know who's gonna fill their shoes 😉
To the top of them boots
What an EXCELLENT comment Jules!!!
I couldn't agree with you any more if I wanted to!!!
Much love from Mobile Alabama.
Sturg is the man!

I’m pretty sure he’s definitely one of the greatest artists of our time!
His music makes me miss Kentucky even though I've never been to the US. I guess that says something.
Live in NC. From greenup county KY. Miss it everyday.
Old kentucky has turned out some of the best down to earth musical performers, Kieth Whitly, Ricky Skaggs and Sturgal.and to many to mention.
Good lord that was one of the most powerful performances Ive witnessed. Totally get Conan’s reaction this left me speechless.

Yes, he’s like another Waylon Jennings.

Listening to this gives me chills. Sturgill is truly one of the best of our generation. Real, Raw, old school country the way it should be .
Lawd, he has me back at the store getting 12packs again! Thank you!
My favorite singer singing my favorite song of his!!!!! He totally kicks ass!!! 👏👏👏👏
To quote a fellow Sturgill fan on RUclips “ This is some Grown Man Shit”” right here.....
Thanks for posting. Best version of this one. Coco had it down forever been missing 👍
This was the moment of revelation for the second coming of Waylon Jennings

He's the best. No doubt about it.
One dislike was someone who sat around and waited to die
Poor guy made a big ole' pot of coffee but didn't have no cream
It is easier than just waiting around to die...ask Townes.
Country perfection.
That lead guitarist is on FIRE! One hell of a job guys
Love this
Hell yea sounds good!

Love you Stergill!!!!
Is by far the most impressive songwriter of the last/10years
I don't know Conan but he seemed visibly surprised.
Conan is a genuine music lover. Plays guitar as well. Has played on his show a couple times. I think he did it with Springsteen. ❤

Right? I’ve gone down multiple Sturgill rabbit holes through the past few years and just came across this the other day.
The believe the last upload got flagged and removed because some folks took offense at "Goddamn" on Live TV...
I KNOW!!! *Facepalm*
Anyone else hear Conan call him Jonah?
Hey Jonah that was great!!!
If you don’t like this, pack your shit and kick rocks
Tyler Davis I am mad because I didn’t see this sooner
Is this an alternate tuning and capo 1, or am I high? Or both.
It is try his song (Sometimes Wine) the Sunday Valley rendition
