Glad more young kids are waking up and unplugging from these addictive sites Edit: Ive never had this many like before. Thanks guys. Keep elevating yourselves
fr i used to have discord, trust me it ruined me lol. i deleted it, and ive been off it for like 2 years. my mental state has IMPROVED like CRAAZYYY. my grades went up, relationships with people who actually cared about me went up, etc. etc. social media sucks tbh... its wired to keep u addicted.
@@ValksStudiosthat doesn't have anything to do with what they just said, it's bad to make it a habit in yout mind that you need validation from people you don't know to feel happy
@@ValksStudios irrelevant... You can have role models outside social media. Jesus, Teddy Roosevelt, Mohammad Ali, MLK, Buddha, all good role models. Social Media is smoke and mirrors sadly. What people need is friendship. I think what OP meant was the whole culture of borderline narcissism that is plaguing places like Instagram, or snapchat. We all want to be valided, and loved but i think sometimes it is unhealthy and depending on the person very toxic. Being surrounded by yesman isn't good
but dont judge me because I don't look at people directly in the eyes. in other cultures that is seen as weird af and they think your trying to steal their soul
"We are living for people we are never gonna meet, while neglecting the ones that are gonna be here forever." This really changed my perspective on social media (being off SM makes the world so real)! Great video boss 🤞🏾
It’s honestly such a breath of fresh air to see others who share the same beliefs about social media as I do. I always find myself upset because barely anyone in our generation seems to care about genuine connection. :(
Honestly I believe this sentiment with all my heart I’m just turning driving age but I believe I’m a wise enough soul to know that none of it feels natural like we’re all caught up in the wrong web. How these big companies are emulating each other to steal eyes (watch time) all day long.
The only down side (for le personally) is I have people who actually have no number because they don’t have SIM cards and they be asking for my socials and I’m like… I have none 💀
Exactly i have always been told that I study a lot and thats the reason why I don’t use Socials. But i always reasoned with that I know what is right for my life and i like to keep it real. However some are just too stupid to understand 😊
As a 25yo girl, I wish I was born at the era of writing letters and being excited to go to balls to meet people and bond.. I pray to have a son who will be this mature early in his youth ... xoxo
Umm, those times had a lot of other issues, it was a lot harder to survive. Also, if you want to write letters to someone, you can still do it, there is people who does that and are looking for pen pals. Also, now a days there is a lot more of social events, much more to choose from and a lot more accessible compared with those times you think you would like to live in. We have a lot more tools, options so it depends from out choices, how we would act and use it
those times were not good like the person above me stated, sure there may be some nice things back then like writing letters and art given more importance but apart from that, everything was shit
I am also 25 and I am so fucking immersed in social media is like I know that is really bad for me but I can't stop cause if I delete all these social media I feel really bored since I don't have a really big group of people to hang out with and I feel like I am not gonna be able to keep like this since I tried it once and it was worse for me as I came to all these social medias, watching reels for a whole day so here I am again, with anxiety, depression and feeling like a shit during a month full of important exams and important dates. Honestly I think that I am addicted to it since I don't have anyone to talk to which makes it worse cause when I don't use them I feel more lonely
I’m 19. I got 1 minute and 30 seconds into this video and went and deleted all of my social media. I relate really hard to the things you said that Instagram, Snapchat, and tiktok make you feel. Thank you Update: it’s been a month and it’s like a weight has been lifted off me. For so many years, social media did more harm than good for me. When I told my friends they thought it was crazy, but then again they all understood why i quit. If you are/have been debating quitting socials, but you haven’t for the sake of sending memes or keeping in touch with friends, don’t do it for them. Do it for you. The right people will understand why you did, and some may even admire you :)
@@hopeg02 yes! I’ve deleted all of these apps in the past but only lasted like a few days or weeks without them. RUclips is my girl tho so she will stay forever 💘 but idk if this is temporary or forever. I just hope I’ll stay off socials for a while for my own personal growth :)
I was talking to this guy and he asked me if I had social media I said no he asked “how are you surviving?”That was the most insane question I ever heard. So if you don’t have social media you can’t survive in life? Social media have really destroyed peoples thought process.
I’ve become addicted to instagram and RUclips for a long time now, I can’t even watch a fully length show on Netflix anymore because everyday I’m scrolling down the spiral. Does anyone have any advice for me?
i’m a 13 y/o girl, i feel proud to have deleted tiktok because the app really brainwashed me. i feel guilty for every single hour i spent on that app, scrolling through unnecessary, quirky videos. but after deleting it, i still find myself addicted to scrolling on the youtube homepage until i find content that interests me. i am trying to break out of that cycle and only use youtube for educational purposes. Thank you for this video sir 🙏
Kudos for you for being self aware enough to do at a young age! You're incredibly bright. I'm 25 and in the same boat you are in now lol! We got this! I've been trying to only watch shorts if they're about my hobbies.
Proud of you! Im 18 and debating if I want to delete socials and use RUclips for the same reason. Im just imagining all the hobbies i can find like learning to play guitar or learning a new language, or even strengthening my connection with God. Seriously leaning towards yes! Keep up the great work and be a role model for other teens ❤😁
It’s been 2 years since I left social media. I have no regrets at all. I got sick of people gossiping, drama, negativity & people faking their lives & friendships and sharing everything that should be kept private or craving attention with provocative pictures & selfies. A number of things I realised: 1. People who added me as “Friends” didn’t really care about me. They were “So called Friends” it was just to increase their friends list. 2. When people were going through their hardest times of anxiety, trauma and upset, I went out of my way & made an effort by helping & supporting them. But when I was going through my hardest times, including anxiety, trauma and stress. The people who I helped & supported never reached out to me to help or supported me even when I struggled. Everything has become one sided. 3. Certain posts or videos get blown out of proportion or completely taken out of context even if it’s nothing negative. 4. People lie about the amount of friends they REALLY have. Who in the REAL world has 100s or 1000s of friends WHO?? 5. Communication is very one sided. The same person had to make the first move to start a conversation as the other person doesn’t make an effort themselves or just can’t be bothered. 6. People lie about their lives, they only show the positive side of theirs lives which doesn’t show the REAL truth about the person. You can’t tell and don’t see if someone is REALLY depressed, upset, isolated, lonely, feeling suicidal or what’s actually going on in their actual lives. Even if people post how they really feel, people don’t always care or not interested. 7. It makes people fake and insecure. It’s not just school kids or teenagers in schools, colleges, universities or workplaces doing it, but grown adults as well are also being fake & insecure, especially managers. 8. People compare themselves to others just to get loads of “Likes” & comments. 9. Social media has increased loneliness, isolation, anxiety and depression which can be severe. 10. Due to social media and the increase in technology, it’s causing destruction & destroying peoples lives in the sense of their is no sense of unity, community, love and nobody wants to help each other. If they see someone doing something constructive and productive and they’re doing well in a community or society, people will laugh at them in an act of ignorance, and cannot wait for them to fall down. Social media is dividing people, not bringing people together. 11. Having a proper conversation or being real is considered not normal and people think it’s creepy. People don’t like having real conversations. 12. It’s made people to be narcissists, entitlement, ignorant, prejudice and bullies. 13. People can say things or make comments that are abusive, racist, sexist, ignorant, prejudice, misogynist, homophobia, xenophobia, discrimination openly online, rather than to your face. 14. I have seen Boys & Girls take provocative, selfies / pictures just to get attention from so called friends / strangers, sometimes in a negative way, for example, woman having their boobs / chests hanging out, body image, men & women showing off muscles, six pack & more. 15. With social media & the young generation with regards to friendships, people feel that if they add someone as friend request and they accept it, or meet someone & they click with them they automatically think that’s “friends for life” people need to realise that’s not how friendship REALLY works. Friendships are & should always be a 2-way street. Real friendships would make the effort to support & be there for each other through the good times, fun times, hard times, sad times, upsetting times & more. Communication & making an effort should be equal on both sides. Not the same person who always makes first contact. The other person should also make an effort too. We need to ALL learn the skill set of when we suffer from stress, anxiety, trauma, facing problems & more, that we should reach out to our friends, family or professionals for help & support, NOT turn to social media. 16. Our young generation has grown up addicted. They have been addicted to mobile phones, alcohol, drugs, social media & more at a young age It’s very sad. We are seeing the negative impact of what social media is doing, but we are not really reacting to it. I never had TikTok, Twitter or Instagram. Glad I didn’t sign up to any of them. Facebook was the only social media platform I had and it was recommended to me back when I was in my teens. I only use RUclips as I can look at interesting things like cooking recipes and motivation videos and music videos of festivals & concerts and more fun stuff. I enjoy going out in nature walks, bowling listening to music and learning new hobbies and watching movies. Since leaving it’s been the best decision of my life. I enjoy life more, I can now enjoy doing the things I do or want to try without being judged or told what to do without being made to feel guilty. I feel more happier and a massive weight has been lifted off my shoulders. I think if social media disappeared forever, I can guarantee people will spend REAL quality time with friends and family. People will know who their REAL friends are and that they will do things together and have a good time doing it. I also feel that people will have proper conversations and listen and engage. I do feel sorry for our young generation. The young generation is lost. There is so much talent and ideas in young people and they need to show that in a positive & constructive way. We can make change for the future. The young generation needs real positive role models to look up to, for them to succeed in life & beyond.
Best comment on here. All of the comments are valid but you are spot on, I couldn't have said it better myself. People have become shut away from society through their phones and seek to have 'friendships' on social media. That in turn makes people more isolated. RUclips has some interesting stuff but social media can be very toxic. It's quite scary how many people (young and older) are just sat on public transport or in public places on their phones. People have become like robots. It really does scare me how the future could become. I have this conversation with my daughter often, although she doesn't really use Facebook or her Instagram account much, she does have her phone in her hand most of the day. She is 27. She is messaging a close friend mostly but is very depressed and doesn't like going out much. She has sometimes talked about suicide when things get bad. The technological age definitely has a lot to answer for. I remember a time in the 80's and 90's where people would actually hang out and go places together. Now, where I live a lot of kids just hang around the streets or join the local council run gym (a lot are as young as 11), taking selfies of themselves on the machines. Granted there aren't many places where younger people can go here and that just compounds the problem.
This comment is awesome man the part where you said social media brings out the worst in people is so spot on. now i'm not gonna pretend I didn't use social media I rarely use Twitter for the purpose of finding like minded people the rest I almost never touched I think the concept of social media is good its just the Execution and population of people sucks.
exactly, everything's super well said here. especially number 11. deep conversations is one of the major true measures fo a friendship and it's one of my favorite aspects of friendship itself. I've found very few people in life with whom I can have deep talks, and they've been the best people I've come to know.
Once I deleted my social media I had literal withdrawals it felt like because initially I felt so lonely without it. But four years later my mental health has improved so much, solitude feels good because when you’re able to make real life genuine connections they actually stick with you.
Oh man radical that’s what I have done still quitting one more app and then I will have quit everything Snapchat was hard to quit but I managed to do it after many long walks through nature and changing my mindset
23 and I've never had it either, and I think it was even more popular when I was in high school (as there were less options in general). I second this, you REALLY don't need it!
@@forestnraindeers3690 it actually is. social media is the means of interactions among people in which they create, share, and/or exchange information and ideas in virtual communities and networks.
If someone's idea of keeping a friendship together is to share streaks, don't be friends with them. What shitty standards these apps have made us have. Great video.
I quit Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok at 18 as a result of my self confidence being so incredibly low that I couldn’t even look in the mirror. Feeling so bad about myself, and always seeing these fake “perfect” lives made me miserable. I quit social media as both an experiment for my mental health, as well as a bet against myself to see how long I could go without it. I’m 21 now and I definitely feel that quitting social media made me a better person both to myself and others, and my self confidence has never been that low ever since:)
I never leave comments on RUclips but I came across your video and nothing has ever resonated with me more. Being someone who used to do social media for a living, stepping away from it all has been the biggest breath of fresh air ever. Couldn’t have said any of this better myself, I didn’t realize others felt the same way. Thank you for posting this and spreading the message of how harmful social media is to our psyche. Happy for you!
Are you permanently stepping away from it? I find myself in the same boat and struggling with this pill of taking a break for even a week. I use social media to grow my music and photography business but it’s definitely been toxic always checking likes and my stats
17 and so intelligent! I go back & forth with deleting my social media but inevitably, it dramatically wastes my time, keeps me distracted so I can’t actually do REAL things in my life. I’m tired of it, we only have this one life, and these stupid apps are not allowing so many of us to actually enjoy our lives
This is crazy, reading this comment someone who has millions of subs but no new videos?! Amazing. would love to hear more about this in a video but I get that might kinda defeat the purpose
I deleted all my social media around 2 years ago and honestly it’s been so nice. At first it was scary because what the fuck do you do without it. Then after some time away from it I realized there’s so much to do and think about and experience. With social media I felt like I didn’t have my own thoughts or ideas but without it I’m relearning what I actually like and what I want to learn about. The validation you get from social media can only take you so far, it honestly just feeds you ego it’s like a game. When you delete social media, you really have to sit with yourself and actually get to know yourself outside of it. I’ve gotten so much better at talking to strangers, learning what I want in a friendship, and being more vulnerable since getting rid of social media. I honestly think life is met to be an individual experience at its core. Yes you will form connections and those are so beautiful but your meant to experience your life not everyone else’s life. So really challenge yourself to take a break and it’s going to feel weird because your so comfortable with how you’ve been living but that doesn’t mean it’s healthy. Let yourself be fucking uncomfortable because once you get through the awkward shit it gets so good. You have such a unique perspective to bring to the world and there’s so much to experience when you put your screen down. Fucking live.
Just now deleted Snapchat Instagram Twitter Tiktok Reddit all that social media stuff i think i’m gonna be ok i like this. Wait is YT also social media??
But why you quite social media because what? Me too I'm quite it because I wasting my Time but I still wasting my Time on RUclips I can't stop watching....
I am only 14. After hearing your words I fully understood that I was addicted and had to stop so I went immediately and deleted Instagram, Snapchat and tik tok. Thank you so much for teaching me at a young age that social media isn’t everything I need. I just need to live my life more out of a screen. It actually felt pretty good to do it also.
AW DUDE this is so cute. Reminds me of my 14 year old little sister. Im so happy you quit and stay on a path of meaning and passion in life. Dont allow big tech or any other corporations to suck the beautiful soul out of you.
Social media kills personal joy. You lose your privacy... Its just shit. Youre not the only one who has gone through these things. Sending you love ❤❤❤
Honestly glad for you for doing that. When I was struggling I should of done that. I got help from Jesus, so now I'm not hopelessly depressed. I hope the best for you. God cares man.

I am nearly 40 and am leaving Social Media because I noticed that I have been much happier in the 90es. I am glad that your generation is noticing the damage of such addictions. All the best for you and thank you for the great video.
So true! And the social media sickness is affecting us mentally. A lot of mental break down due to social isolation of decreased social interaction of seeing each other in person
Sooo true . I was also way happier in the 90’s myself . I took an fb and Instagram 90 day leave on 4/17 it’s coming up on 90 days and I have NO desire to go back . Best decision EVER 🎉 I’m talking to people now , way more social , closer to my kids , even their dad came for Father’s Day . Life is so much better & now I really notice people buried in their phones 📱 like never before because I’m not buried in mine anymore
Same here, I remembered the 90s and how it was a general rule that not everybody needed to know your business. Then I realised that it’s true they really don’t, and I don’t need to know theirs either. I had the thought of well how is everyone going to stay in touch? Then I flashed back to the 90s and realised, if they want to speak to me they have my phone number …… social media has been a cancer on the world especially in the last decade
This feels incredibly real to me as a 14-year-old girl, and I strongly believe that social media can be a major drain on our time and overall well-being. It's disheartening to witness the profound impact it can have on teenagers' mental health. Personally, I've experienced feelings of insecurity and noticed a decrease in productivity while being active on social media. However, since I made the decision to stop/delete my social media accounts, I have found a greater sense of happiness, health, and confidence. It's important for people to recognize that a fulfilling and cool life doesn't depend on social media. Keep making more videos like this!! 😊😊
omg yay fellow 14 year old, hi i quit discord and insta when i was 12, been off it for 2 years now :D im waaayy more happier, and my grades went up lol, tbh social media is wired to keep you on it for hours, when i first quit social media, i felt bored as heck and i always wanted to go back, but i persevered and i managed to give it up completely. good luck to u!
helloo another fellow 14 year old! I’m trying to do this right now and I am EXTREMELY motivated and glad to find others my age who take action on this subject, and are interested in it!
I’m 15 year old now and I deleted tiktok 3 months ago (I was 14 then lol) and it was the best decision. I had always thought to deleting it but I was just saying to myself that “I’m only using it bc I want to make videos for myself” and “I’m only using it bc of the songs” and then I realized I was making excuses. And when I realized that, I just deleted it. And when I told my friends that I deleted tiktok they laughed at me and told me I was stupid😀 like what. Who’s gonna tell them that they’re the dumb ones? Anyway and at the same time I deleted Snapchat bc I realized that I don’t even use the app and it’s only gonna take up my storage. So yeah. The best decision I made. And I’m glad that I quit social media (well not really only one app but still) when im still this young. And the fact that I told myself when I was still using tiktok that “I’m not even comparing myself” but I actually were subconsciously comparing myself all the time. My self-love, confidence and mental health has increased so much. I actually downloaded Snapchat like a month ago bc I wanted to. I still have instagram bc I’m actually never iusing the app and usually ppl delete it bc they compare themselves all the time. But I have never done that so that’s not a problem. It’s quite long but I had a lot to say. I still have RUclips and it’s really time consuming and now that it has shorts it’s like tiktok. But im now trying to lower down my screen time on RUclips shorts.
Hii, im a 14yr boy, i come from a pretty poor country (DR), and I have a really big ambitions, using social media distracts me enormously, and I’ve decided to stay away from all the harmful stuff. The world is rather unfair, but I know, that If I work hard enough and play my cards smart enough, I can get almost anywhere, love ❤️
As a teenager, I agree 100 percent. Social media is addicting and ruins minds. It's absolutely disgusting. This is why genz is reverting back to flip phones. I'm also seeing more and more people in our generation wake up to this crap. Brett Cooper would be happy, lol.
@@deltahomicide9300 That definitely wouldn’t change if they had social media. Trust me, it doesn’t do you any favours and Facebook/Instagram just stressed me out even more. I was surrounded by friends and women I never had a chance with not to mention there’s so much toxicity.
I'm much older than you (40s) and have noticed how social media has changed us in so many negative ways. I can't even go out to eat with friends without everyone's head buried in their phones or constantly sharing someone's TikTok video or their follower counts, etc. I miss the old days. I cannot IMAGINE what you 20 somethings must be going through because you've GROWN UP with this technology. You've never had a break! It's just too much.
you're realizing what I didn't realize until my late 20s- that you only need the two close friends you have, and you shouldn't stress yourself trying to get more.
Not to mention it makes your relationships stronger when your social battery doesn’t run out as fast because you’ve always got something new to ask or talk about because your thinking drastically improves!
Yes I agree!! I also think it allows us to seek out new friendships as well because the friends we do have are mainly still avid social media users and we begin to notice their low social battery when hanging out.
for any artists out there, taking a break/quitting social media while creating is IMPERATIVE!!! social media is a filtered highlight reel and its so easy to get distracted and want validation from the public. taking a break for a couple months can refresh you and get your mind right!! im a musician and im currently working on my debut album and i’ve noticed a huge difference already just a couple days unplugged. sending love❤
I love this. I’m 26 and wish I realized this as soon as you did. So much more peaceful and less anxiety I’m sure. Same with romantic relationships. Social media has normalized feeling the need to speak to someone 24/7, when way back then, maybe a phone call in the morning and at night was enough.
I'm on the edge of 25 and I have had a battle with social media for a very long time but quitting this time, so I understand you. It's never too late in this society we live in to just delete all of these pathetic virtual environments. And they do reassure toxic and emotional dependent behavior, right? I see now how fuc*ed up it is to expect for a person to have the time to speak and send pics to one another the entire day. Just insane.
I keep telling people the exact same thing about relationships and msgs. Also social media f… up relationships in general since everyone thinks they can easily find a new better partner. Ps I hope everyone is enjoying their social app-free lifes!
I deactivated and deleted my Facebook and Instagram in 2018. It was so hard at first and people started disappearing. I have a lot less drama in my life now, fewer people around, but the ones I have are authentic and incredible. You’re so right on everything you’re saying, thank you for spreading this message.
i’ve deleted social media for more than a year and almost exactly had the same experience as you. i’ve realized how about 5 months later my so called “friends” just then noticed that i deleted the app. i can honestly say without social media i’ve been more productive in my daily life and that i learned not to rely on validation from others. it’s good to hear that someone around my age finally took the step and made the decision 👏🏽👏🏽
I know I’m late to the party here but I’m so glad someone my age is talking about this. I was legitimately becoming suicidal as a result of social media’s toxicity and the constant feeling that I was wasting my life, and yet people tell me that staying away from social media is cringy. I’m 17, tech companies are so f*cked up for profiting off this.
I’m so happy to see the younger generation waking up and deeming social media the demise to mental health and social interactions. You’re really smart to want to leave. I’m quitting too because it has done more harm than any good.
Yup I’m 23 and the best thing I did 2as to delete my instagram account for my music and use my RUclips channel instead to put out my music and it’s less distracting.
I’m doing it progressively : I already deleted TikTok and Snapchat. I’m keeping Twitter a bit and Insta to text my friends, but I don’t really watch stories and publications anymore. Wish everyone the same :)
19 here, deleted instagram, snap, tiktok etc. i only have whatsapp and RUclips (which i mainly use to learn new things or watch self improvement videos to motivate myself) but overall feeling much better, and ive limited myself to max 2H screentime per day
Honestly couldn't agree more. I'm 17 and from the UK and over the past 2 years I have deleted all of my socials (tiktok, instagram, snapchat). I think it's so important that I've done this for myself. Social media and the way we use our phones in the modern day is so harmful and most people simply ignore it. Even if they do acknowledge it, they don't want to change the way they live? Most people want to fit in, but you cannot be a ball kicked by others, you have to control your own game. It's quite scary that humanity is beginning to become more comfortable in a virtual world rather than our real one. I also relate to your journey so much, the few people texting after deleting snap, to having to try many ways to live a new life without social media. I find it comforting that there are people out there, like me, who have stopped to really THINK about the way they are living, and even more than that, to ACT. People should focus on the world around them, as it's not healthy for us to be maintaining our real lives alongside a virtual persona- it's draining! It also really is hard getting used to less people messaging you and coming to terms about only a few people caring, but once you get to the point, like I have, that you are at peace with it, it's so freeing. Breaking habits is hard to do, but it can be done. I have considered and thought about so many things in the last 2 years, simply because my mind has been free too. I'm more creative, curious, and have time for things that add to my wellbeing. I'm finally living for myself, and I hope others can do this too. Sending much love
Sending love right back. It is very nice to see people like you that also agree that it is scary that the world is getting more comfortable in the virtual world. It's so normal to live in a virtual world now that us even having this conversation might seem weird to people. You've done the right thing, you're on the right path, proud of you!
I quit social medias when I was 12 years old, now I’m 19 and I regret NOTHING. I don’t want to imagine how my life would be, if I didn’t quit them. Like you said, even my mom and my aunt keep saying to me that my choice is stupid, but I don’t care. It’s really not a problem for me, and it’s sad that for others is. Thank you for this video, sometimes I feel lonely, because I feel like my generation doesn’t really care that much about the topic, but now I’m happy💗 Ps. English is not my first language :,)
same with me. i know a lot of people would think or say i’m “weird” for not being on any type of social media because that’s everything that people are on now. but i realized that some can’t function without it. they need that for validation and for acceptance and it’s understandable but at the same time i think it is damaging. i just think it’s something that has been out for years and so many are used to this by now.
Whenever people find out that I don't have social media anymore, I get the feeling that they automatically assume that I think I'm better than them or something, which I totally don't. Like you, I've been in the trenches of social media addiction and have a lot of empathy for those who are still going through it. But man, the amount of peace I've gotten from leaving... I wouldn't trade that for the world.
i’ve left all social media (instagram, tiktok etc) but there’s always these thoughts where i think that i’m “missing out” but at the same time it is peaceful and i don’t do any harm to my own self
@@ArabellaSpencer I believe it technically does, but it's one of those like RUclips that I use differently than I did with Snapchat. 5 months clean without social media and I’ve never felt better. My mental health has been so much better, Im more confident in myself and much happier in general. I recommend this to EVERYONE. Young and older, it’s the best decision anyone in this generation could make.
@@oeillet7676There’s your issue you don’t need to be trendy and relevant in this world besides the trends that are going around only ruin your mental health because your mind is thinking “ouu” I like this trend and “I want to try it” but are you really gaining anything from it”
It feels good to know that my choice to avoid tiktok and Snapchat was a good choice hearing stories like this, but i feel bad for the people who did and had to go through such a depressing thing
I’m 22 years old, and I struggled with social media addiction for more or less the past 5 years, mainly to numb my emotional pain. My biggest issue was Reddit, especially all the celebrity subreddits. But over a month ago, I forced myself to get off of Reddit, and ever since my life has improved so much for the better. That might sound over the top, but people who never really had social media addiction, or never tried to quit their sm addiction would not understand what this does to you. I no longer feel the need to nor do I want to go on Reddit anymore. And I also stopped caring about celebrities, who don’t even know I exist. Life is so much better, when you focus on yourself and the people that actually care about you.
Exactly what I’m saying. Why should we care for influencers and celebrities who don’t know us nor care/know of our existence, clearly they use it only because it is their source of income and job but for the rest of us it is just a waste of space and time. Instead we should use that time to learn new skills and better ourselves that is all that should matter, nothing else.
This was literally a free TED Talk. For a 17yr old you speak eloquently and you dropped tonnes of wisdom - and making the main message about finding yourself and your purpose. I hope lots of people watch this. I personally did something radical - I downgraded from the latest iPhone 14 Pro to an iPhone SE 2020, and my goal was to only install bare essential apps (email, messages, banking, music, fitness, reading), with zero social media and no shopping apps (ebay, Amazon, etc). The SE is also only 64GB and combined with the very small battery life, means 1) I don’t install more apps as there’s just no space, and 2) the limited battery life means I won’t be picking up my phone a lot, to make the battery last. It’s refreshing making my phone a peripheral tool again, not the main character. I’m keeping the iPhone 14 Pro for when I travel so I have a good camera, lots of storage for pics and vids, etc, and use travel apps. I managed to get an old SE for real cheap, and maybe this approach can help others too. I was initially going to buy a simple phone (the ones with physical number keypads, or the Light Phone), but I do need to access my data within my iPhone/iCloud ecosystem and it made more sense for me to make my own “lite” phone via the SE and not mess up havign fragmented messages, pics etc if I moved to a different ecosystem. I think it’s a perfect in-between of giving up the pull of an iPhone and its powerful apps, and having a lite phone that should just be there for the essentials.
I'M JUST STARTING TO DELETE ALL THOSE APPS...AND HONESTLY, IT FEELS SO GOOD! I'M GONNA FOCUS ON ACHIEVING MY DREAMS AND FINDING TRUE FRIENDS WHO ACTUALLY CARE FOR ME!! THANK YOU FOR THIS VIDEO
I'm 16 turning 17, this video really brought me to tears, I agree with absolutely everything you have said in this video it is really comforting to know that there are people my age realising the problems about growing up social media and how it effects our mental health I am so so so glad you made this video it really feels nice to relate with someone about this topic
Reading the first line of your comment brought ME to tears. I’m 29 now and social media (MySpace) became big when I was about 12..& it (social media in general) absolutely dominated my life until I was about 23..it’s absolutely mentally stunting to be trapped in the addiction of social media. Absolutely. Mentally. Stunting. So to see someone who’s 16 say something like that, that they realize where their life is headed if they don’t do something, it just makes me happy and hopeful. See when I was your age..there was no one to point these things out because it was so new to all of us. Bless you and your journey..the older you get the more perspective you gain
This is why as an aspiring artist and songwriter I deleted my social media and it has worked wonders for me and I’m more in tune with writing my songs and being more creative with my music and lyrics. It also helps me to be original with my music than to sound like everyone else doing music on social media
im also an aspiring musician and what you said is beautiful. i agree with you 100% and im currently working on an album & deleting social media has made it so much more enjoyable!!
Just a tip if you guys do go offline: make sure you have a way to meet people and make friends irl. Make sure you hang out with people irl. I'm more or less offline now, only having RUclips and a couple messaging apps, and the isolation is killing me. I have few friends irl, who I don't see often. Most of my days are spent entirely alone. Going offline is good and all, but make sure you have a network of people in real life, or it'll crush you
@RS-of8od bro, if Twitter was all you had socially, you're honestly better off going back. You can still self improve while being mildly addicted to Twitter, especially if you have friends and a support network there. Taking a break for a while in order to focus on real life is worthwhile, since it does help with discipline and whatnot. But humans have a need for social interaction, and if you can't meet that need irl, you'll seek out a surrogate somewhere, and that will usually be online. But perhaps the isolation will drive you to make changes irl, so sometimes it's better to take your crutches away
Hey I am 25 RN , left social media 2 months ago, after almost 10 years of continuous usage, and yesterday I cried, I cried because I never felt this calm before, I cried because i realised how I killed my dream in the chase of small dopamine shots I was getting from social media, I cried because I realised it. I am back on my grind and will continue working harder to achieve my dreams. I think these are the withdrawal symptoms of social media, haha, you start chasing your dreams, chasing what matters to you the most, chasing what makes you happy and you start to find meaning in life and true friends. You are doing so great man! Keep it up! Happy for you!
you're in touch with your emotions and thoughts man, that's something that gets destroyed with social media. i love hearing stories like yours, inspiring to me and awesome to know there's others out there feeling the same thing. good luck bro!
i'm so glad i found this video, i'm 16 & i quit social media almost a year ago now. the relief you feel after is just amazing, i have so much more spare time for hobbies & surprisingly, i am actually more socialable now bc there is more intention behind talking to people. it's so refreshing to see more people doing the same:)
I left social media 5 months ago and never felt better. Do it for yourself🙏🏻 don’t waste the time of your life for commercial apps that make money of it
Im 27 and its been a month since ive been off of all the social media platforms indefinitely and my anxiety levels have really decreased and i have started to really looking around and appreciate the beauty of everything thats in front of me. Im more productive at work im not constantly looking for a distraction. I love the benefits of quitting social media and im excited to see what else comes of it.
I’m 29 and this is exactly what I say to a real life friend who wants to do the same…It’s WAY better to worry about the world around YOU…instead of things that have no effect on you (politics, religion etc etc)
Im glad to see people of my generation who truly just think for themselves and not for the sake of public satisfaction. People like you give me some hope for our generation, because to be honest i have lost hope a couple of times.
Finally someone who understands. I deleted TikTok like three months ago and everybody said that they wish they could do that. But i still have RUclips and pinterest where i am spending a lot of time and i feel like i am just wasting my life away.
@@umudrame2332i mean yes better than that .. didnt u notice smg abt tiktok its like its playing with our emotions u see one vid made u cry u scroll here u are laughing its like up n down thats mental damaging… ytb n Pinterest better i guess u control what u want to see
I am 48 and my 17 year old shared your video, this video needs to be shared and translated worldwide absolutly. A lot of young people your age are lost because of social media, and your words can SAVE a lot of them. Your video can put an end to all this, really !! It needs to be seen, of course and I imagine that it is to late for some of them, that is why we have to be quick and share it. I am really weighing my words when I say you can be a HERO to them !!!! My son and I are from France and if my son didn't understand english I wouldn't have seen this. People, parents, grand parents and friends please share this video for our young ones. You are a HERO for me man !!!
I'm 18. I went to see my today's screen time as I was watching your video. It was quite a shock to see 6 hours and 40 minutes. My daily average screen time is 4 hours. 4 FREAKING HOURS. I wonder what it would be like if I spend those 4 hours learning how to play a guitar or how to code, or hobbies I always wanted to develop. I immediately deleted tiktok and instagram from my phone. I'm so grateful for this video. You made me realize the negative impacts of SM I have been ignoring. Thank you so much
@@user-ju1pm5el2b Pretty good so far. Not gonna lie it's not easy. There were multiple times when I wanted to reinstall tiktok so bad. Specially when I see my friends watch videos it's tempting but I'm pushing thru. I only use youtube and try to manage my screentime below 3 hours. I got a better amount of free time it really helps cuz I always felt like my days are so short and I don't have enough time to do everything I want so I don't regret it a bit.
What a great video! I deleted Snapchat and TikTok a few months back, found new values in my life and can totally agree with the feeling of loneliness in the beginning. Feeling like an outsider, even like I'm missing out on my youth when in fact I'm focusing now on things that will benefit me in the long run. My grades have gone up, I've learned lots of new things and don't have this constant stress about whether boys give me attention. Such a great and an important video, It's also incredibly relieving to see other people around my age that have similar thoughts.
@@sxm5726 I don’t have a giant circle of friends so thankfully I don’t have the pressure of you know ”feeling left out” due to not knowing trends etc. I would say that if I happen to come across some current trend somewhere and don’t recognize it, I even feel kind of proud because of having been so ”chronically online” before :D But I imagine not keeping up with trends can be harder especially if your friend group knows all about them hence leaving you feeling left out.
For the past 2.5 years i’ve been doing social media detoxing every few months and it has been a great way to clear my mind from these toxic platforms. I still try to delete them for as long as possible but i think my fear of missing out is holding me back. Funny thing is i started using social media to escape reality, now i use reality to escape social media.
This is going to be such a random comment, but I find it really attractive when people talk about this, and then do something about it. Good for you for not just realizing how bad it is for your life and ACTUALLY doing something about it.
I had this group of fake "friends" around me last year, and they would always target me to make fun of me for not having tiktok and not keeping up with news. I'm so glad I cut them all off.
Good for you man. Social media made me realize that all my so called friends were fake especially when I was at my lowest and stepped away from social and they all unfollowed me and I blocked them. It just wasn’t worth and I been on this self love journey since then and I’m much more happier than I was before
I’m 36 and so glad I grew up in the era of no social media. We talked on the phone for hours , hung out at every chance , wrote notes and letters lol. Liked for who you were.
I know! We had social media (I’m 38), but when you were logged on (but had to sit down at the computer), that’s the only time we were chatting with people online and answering emails. No one got paranoid if you waited a week to respond. As you said, we were always talking on the phone, hanging out, writing notes… and enjoyed that much more. :)
@@sarahmckinneyrobinson yea n msn and yahoo chat and webcams etc but again nothing like today and had to be at computer lol. Which were very expensive !
@@dreamcrazy36 - Yes! :) If we were online, that’s when we did our chatting. Could just log off at any time and go call a REAL friend. With phones, as you know, it’s always in hand now and so everyone is ALWAYS connected; online. I miss “back in the day”, lol.
Broo I’m glad to see other ppl have this mindset too, I’m 18 and I’m honestly so sick and tired of social media and the culture of it in itself. It’s honestly annoying when I talk to my friends and they only talk about things on social media and scroll on their phone when we hang. It’s all things that don’t matter I’d rather live in the real world than a digital one.
I’m 21 and quit most social medias (Insta, Snapchat etc) when I was 16 and it’s honestly improved my mental health a lot and I’m glad I took a step back ngl
I stopped going on social media for three years now. Sometimes I go there to check something and see how the world is doing. I'm not happy. not because I quit, but because life in general is confusing now. But that step was a big part of how I function mentally now. I like that I allowed life to be authentic and raw. I hope I feel better about life soon. I'm being patient trying to figure out why I'm here. Thanks for the video Reece.
I'm starting feel disgusted with myself, the standards today and how much I spend off on the social media like it's my birth right and life source. My school activity programs and friend hangouts are the only things that make me away from social media and slump on bed all day. I'm really in need of stopping with my addiction.
I deleted snapchat over 4 yrs ago and after being on and off instagram for years, I finally deleted it forever 4 months ago. your video strenghtens my belief that I made the right choice and that social media is bullshit and is making our generation so fucked up. you are well-spoken and you seem down-to-earth and sane! I could have listened to you talk for hours!
I quit social media in 2016, except YT, but I hardly comment on YT. I can honestly say it was one of the best and most important decisions I made in my life. I am 55 now, so I grew up without social media. And I really don't want to say everything was better in the past, but the fact that we didn't have social media was so much better. I really hope more people will reconnect with their true self and their true values. Social media puts us in a state of dissociation, if it's used in this addictive way and most of us don't use it in a healthy way.
With social media, we are in constant comparison with each other. It can't be helped. human nature. If you want better mental health (to those suffering from it), limit or cut your exposure to social media at all. It works wonders. Reduced my anxiety by a mile and I get to focus on myself without comparing my progress with others.
This video is so authentic, raw and real. I'm very happy for you that you made the decision to quit social media. It's an absolute snake pit and poisonous to your entire being.
I lowkey relate to 3:07 "leaving social media", because when I was in 10th grade no one really cared about me, except to those 2 people that does. I do have to agree with this one heavy!
I don’t have any social media never got on and people genuinely look at me weird. The fact that people find it weird that I want my life private is crazy to me.
finding your channel is a blessing. i’m going through the same issue with social media with self imagery issues, comparing, and especially with the loneliness. but i always have a cycle of deleting and re-downloading apps like you stated so i hope one day it can be gone for good or to have a healthy habit using social media. I’m probably gonna binge all your videos lmao. you earned a subscriber, keep it up bro. good shit
thanks man. I appreciate it a lot. i'm glad you found some value in what I said and I wish you luck on your bettering yourself journey. eventually you'll be off for good, it is a cycle of deleting and then redownloading, but you might realize you're happier off of it, you know?
I quit social media when i was 15, only have RUclips account, its amazing honestly. People look at me and say sometimes “how you entertain yourself?! So boring.” And i reply “i just live life, i like being in the moment” 😊 I prefer actual live connections and meeting people in person
I've been off social media for 3 years, and its been the best decision I have ever made. I realized then it was bad for my mental health, so I just deleted everything and never looked back. I'm glad you're saying this and spreading awareness, I feel like many people need to see this. Also, same with the private story lol. I felt that.
I'm 17 years old and I've never associated myself with social media and I'm so glad I haven't. I like around me and I see how much of a negative effect that social media has own our minds and its so insane to watch. Hearing horror stories of people committing suicide because of a situation off of social media was so mind boggling to me. But I'm glad that there are people waking up and getting out of this crap.
Glad more young kids are waking up and unplugging from these addictive sites
Edit: Ive never had this many like before. Thanks guys. Keep elevating yourselves
hell yeah!
YES ! I was thinking the same. I’m in my late twenties and this gives me hope that young people are starting to think this way!
RUclips is turning into social media. It displays usernames now in the comments and has shorts.
fr i used to have discord, trust me it ruined me lol. i deleted it, and ive been off it for like 2 years. my mental state has IMPROVED like CRAAZYYY. my grades went up, relationships with people who actually cared about me went up, etc. etc. social media sucks tbh... its wired to keep u addicted.

What people need is friendship. I think what OP meant was the whole culture of borderline narcissism that is plaguing places like Instagram, or snapchat. We all want to be valided, and loved but i think sometimes it is unhealthy and depending on the person very toxic. Being surrounded by yesman isn't good

It’s just too strange I’m majorly scared for the future it makes me sad
The only down side (for le personally) is I have people who actually have no number because they don’t have SIM cards and they be asking for my socials and I’m like… I have none 💀
Exactly i have always been told that I study a lot and thats the reason why I don’t use Socials. But i always reasoned with that I know what is right for my life and i like to keep it real. However some are just too stupid to understand 😊
This! they designed us to be like robots. we need to live again fr.
Social media makes you less sociable which is really sad. i wanna meet people face to face not on a screen😭
Me too, and it just seems so hard to make real friends nowadays
I agree, but it's very hard to see people in person these days.
That's true.
everything you've said is 100% accurate. Social media is draining. I don't want to be 40 and regret spending my 20-30s on my phone or on social media.

You can still do all those things.

Update: it’s been a month and it’s like a weight has been lifted off me. For so many years, social media did more harm than good for me. When I told my friends they thought it was crazy, but then again they all understood why i quit. If you are/have been debating quitting socials, but you haven’t for the sake of sending memes or keeping in touch with friends, don’t do it for them. Do it for you. I’ve become addicted to instagram and RUclips for a long time now, I can’t even watch a fully length show on Netflix anymore because everyday I’m scrolling down the spiral. Does anyone have any advice for me?
Yes. People are more socially awkward now then ever before. Social media connected us, but not in a good way..
i’m a 13 y/o girl, i feel proud to have deleted tiktok because the app really brainwashed me. i feel guilty for every single hour i spent on that app, scrolling through unnecessary, quirky videos. but after deleting it, i still find myself addicted to scrolling on the youtube homepage until i find content that interests me. i am trying to break out of that cycle and only use youtube for educational purposes. Thank you for this video sir 🙏

Proud of you! Im 18 and debating if I want to delete socials and use RUclips for the same reason.
A number of things I realised:
This comment is awesome man the part where you said social media brings out the worst in people is so spot on.
now i'm not gonna pretend I didn't use social media I rarely use Twitter for the purpose of finding like minded people
the rest I almost never touched I think the concept of social media is good its just the Execution and population of people sucks.
Well said!
exactly, everything's super well said here. especially number 11. deep conversations is one of the major true measures fo a friendship and it's one of my favorite aspects of friendship itself. I've found very few people in life with whom I can have deep talks, and they've been the best people I've come to know.
I wish i could print this comment and post it on my School's walls
Once I deleted my social media I had literal withdrawals it felt like because initially I felt so lonely without it. But four years later my mental health has improved so much, solitude feels good because when you’re able to make real life genuine connections they actually stick with you.

Well, you have not really quited social media if you're commmenting here.

Best decision EVER 🎉
I’m talking to people now , way more social , closer to my kids , even their dad came for Father’s Day .
I'm 27 and quit my socials and it's been such an improvement! Seriously, you will see such an improvement in your soul, life, etc.
It's important for people to recognize that a fulfilling and cool life doesn't depend on social media.

helloo another fellow 14 year old!

Ummm where are these kids that are going back to flip phones??? 😂

Are you in favour of sm
Yes I agree!! I also think it allows us to seek out new friendships as well because the friends we do have are mainly still avid social media users and we begin to notice their low social battery when hanging out.
for any artists out there, taking a break/quitting social media while creating is IMPERATIVE!!! social media is a filtered highlight reel and its so easy to get distracted and want validation from the public. taking a break for a couple months can refresh you and get your mind right!! im a musician and im currently working on my debut album and i’ve noticed a huge difference already just a couple days unplugged.

I love this. I’m 26 and wish I realized this as soon as you did. So much more peaceful and less anxiety I’m sure. Same with romantic relationships. Social media has normalized feeling the need to speak to someone 24/7, when way back then, maybe a phone call in the morning and at night was enough.
It is already very good that you realised it now and not later youre doing good keep it up !
I'm on the edge of 25 and I have had a battle with social media for a very long time but quitting this time, so I understand you. It's never too late in this society we live in to just delete all of these pathetic virtual environments. And they do reassure toxic and emotional dependent behavior, right?

It’s not your first language but you nailed it bro🎉
same with me. i know a lot of people would think or say i’m “weird” for not being on any type of social media because that’s everything that people are on now. but i realized that some can’t function without it. they need that for validation and for acceptance and it’s understandable but at the same time i think it is damaging. i just think it’s something that has been out for years and so many are used to this by now.
that's awesome! I had a genuine question for you: what did you do with your time instead of being on social media?
That's cool
Whenever people find out that I don't have social media anymore, I get the feeling that they automatically assume that I think I'm better than them or something, which I totally don't. Social media apps are the new world order taking control of hour creative soul, still trying my best to quit the phone entirely but it is to damn hard
Wow that’s awesome 👏
@@evelyndaniels5613 yeh I’ve nicknamed the iPhone SE as iPhone Socials Excluded :)

Reading the first line of your comment brought ME to tears. I’m 29 now and social media (MySpace) became big when I was about 12..& it (social media in general) absolutely dominated my life until I was about 23..it’s absolutely mentally stunting to be trapped in the addiction of social media.
So sorry... I'm 22 and I feel the same way. But I'm still scared to actually let it go and face the truth cuz I just might crumble 😢
Im 31 & definitely agree with u; wise young man you are ! 💯
if you agree with me you’re the wise one!
i'm so glad i found this video, i'm 16 & i quit social media almost a year ago now. the relief you feel after is just amazing, i have so much more spare time for hobbies & surprisingly, i am actually more socialable now bc there is more intention behind talking to people. it's so refreshing to see more people doing the same:)
I love the benefits of quitting social media and im excited to see what else comes of it.
good job man!!
But i still have RUclips and pinterest where i am spending a lot of time and i feel like i am just wasting my life away.
i understand. step by step spend less time on the two.
im in the same exact position with pinterest and youtube. but i feel like they are still better than tiktok?
@@umudrame2332i mean yes better than that .. didnt u notice smg abt tiktok its like its playing with our emotions u see one vid made u cry u scroll here u are laughing its like up n down thats mental damaging… ytb n Pinterest better i guess u control what u want to see
it’s youtube and reddit for me. i have pinterest too but last time i went on there there was so much ai art i got kinda turned off from it.
@@ceruleumtesserite866 actually pinterst I use it like a vision board u know .. and yes i love redit too the ppl there exchanging informations n stuff
Thats amazing so happy to hear that
Thank you so much
So how's this quitting social media thing going on? Are you succeeding or you went back to your regular routine?
@@user-ju1pm5el2b Pretty good so far. Not gonna lie it's not easy. There were multiple times when I wanted to reinstall tiktok so bad. Specially when I see my friends watch videos it's tempting but I'm pushing thru. I only use youtube and try to manage my screentime below 3 hours. I got a better amount of free time it really helps cuz I always felt like my days are so short and I don't have enough time to do everything I want so I don't regret it a bit.
@@sepisargreat to hear bro
I also deleted my social media apps, I only use Instagram on my laptop now to communicate with friends. And I only have RUclips on my phone .
Such a great and an important video, It's also incredibly relieving to see other people around my age that have similar thoughts.
proud asf of you. you're doing the hard thing but the right thing for yourself, keep it up :)
If u don't mind me asking how did u feel when u felt like u didn't know what was going on like new trends
I uninstalled Snapchat the very next day when my friends started sending me photos of roads, fans, ceilings, its sunday, coffee mugs..I was like WTF
Well said 😊
This is going to be such a random comment, but I find it really attractive when people talk about this, and then do something about it.
It just wasn’t worth and I been on this self love journey since then and I’m much more happier than I was before
I agree! I deleted the mainstream social media and I notice a difference.
there ya go!
certain subreddits on reddit dont feel like social media but rather a community of likeminded people
@@pilotboy agreed!
Thanks for normalising being without social media
I’m 36 and so glad I grew up in the era of no social media. We talked on the phone for hours , hung out at every chance , wrote notes and letters lol. Liked for who you were.
I know! We had social media (I’m 38), but when you were logged on (but had to sit down at the computer), that’s the only time we were chatting with people online and answering emails. No one got paranoid if you waited a week to respond. As you said, we were always talking on the phone, hanging out, writing notes… and enjoyed that much more. :)
Btw, I’m really hot and tired and realize I could’ve worded that much better… but I know you understand what I mean :)
@@sarahmckinneyrobinson my first phone was the bright Orange acatel haha charged per txt so every txt counted!
Its refreshing to see that there are still people in our age group that want a genuine life :)
Reduced my anxiety by a mile and I get to focus on myself without comparing my progress with others.
i usually don’t watch long videos until the end but this time i did, YOURE SPEAKING FACTS
Watch gerbert Johnson he’s like this guy but he’s a little sillier
social media has made u feel like this video is long
This video is so authentic, raw and real.
I did this after graduating college months ago. I can attest that it really did help me nurture mental clarity and peace.
« Im happier thanks to social media said » no one ever
I quit social media when i was 15, only have RUclips account, its amazing honestly. People look at me and say sometimes “how you entertain yourself?! So boring.” And i reply “i just live life, i like being in the moment” 😊 I prefer actual live connections and meeting people in person
Damn that "if it's made in the last 50 years probably avoid it" makes so much sense. so interesting to listen to your thoughts. keep going!
thank you!!
Good job! I wish I did that
good on you i’ve also been doing that for a while now but sometimes i think i’m “missing out” but it’s all in my head
I’m so glad this blew up more people need to realize this about social media
