    The thing I love about Wirt is that while his character needed development, it is ultimately his nihilistic thought process that helps him figure out the beast's weakness. A typical hero, the self-assured and optimistic kind, would have accepted the beast's offer and ruined their life in order to satisfy its hunger. But Wirt being his usual pessimistic self, always being distrustful and hesitant, is the only person who realizes that the beast is trying to manipulate him. This shows that while his character arc required him to be more confident and optimistic, his pessimism was useful in certain scenarios.
    Wirt is one of my favorite cartoon protagonists despite not having a super detailed backstory or character arc, just because of how unconventional he is. Most shows, especially kids shows, strive to make the protagonist inspirational, a beacon of hope in an otherwise cruel world. But Wirt is somewhat the opposite. He's not evil or cruel, but he represents the people who are so insecure about themselves that it completely warps their worldview. We've seen awkward or slightly nervous characters before, but either they are awkward for the sake of relatability and comedy, or they have had a past of bullying, abuse or something else that broke their confidence.
    For Wirt, he is neither of those things. He is relatable but almost uncomfortably so. While the other awkward characters have awkwardness as a little character quirk, Wirt's anxiety and unsureness is a very big part of his character. And as far as we know, he does not have a trauma of any kind. The story builds up in a way that tricks us into thinking that he may have been bullied or that Jason Funderberker is this beefy chad guy who Wirt pales in comparison to. But it is revealed that neither of those things are true; all of the kids are really nice to Wirt and even genuinely want him around. Sara seems to be interested in him (though it's ambiguous whether that interest is platonic or romantic) and Jason Funderberker is this puny, somewhat unnoticeable guy who is also trying to be friendly to Wirt.
    This makes us realize how much Wirt's insecurity has blinded him from seeing that people actually like him and want to hang out with him. And this is an uncomfortable truth for a lot of us because we also tend to get so engrossed in our self-deprecating mindset, thinking that everyone hates us, when it's simply not true.

      I mean, his mom got remarried; so his other parent is probably either dead, or at the very least, divorced. And divorce is pretty traumatizing to a kid, especially a preteen/teenager in my experience.
      But yes, I completely agree on all of your other points!

    • @skyhideaway
      @skyhideaway Год назад +6

      @@Tanglenose98 oh yes, that's possible. but it was never explicitly mentioned in the series. if his anxiety did stem from childhood trauma, I'm sure they would have gone further into it.

    I was honestly so excited to "meet" Wirt for the first time. I've always been pretty self-isolating, even before Kindergarten, and it caused a lot of struggles in high school, when I met my first crush. Even from the first episode, I felt so seen in Wirt's spontaneous poetry. As things went on, and finally, the flashback episode, I was so glad to have a character I understood completely. Wirt's cassette tape was my various letters, which were saved in a box and eventually burned unread by anyone. Wirt putting on a homemade Halloween costume was a reflection of the entirety of my wardrobe choices, things that made me feel good and like my own entity. By the end of the series, "good" felt like the wrong word to describe it, since it reminded me of parts of myself that I honestly don't always like, but there was a warm feeling in my heart, and I knew that I loved it and would watch it many, many times.

    (Thank you for the video! You may already know of it, but if you liked the tone/theme/music of "Over the Garden Wall," I highly recommend the live action film "Oh Brother where art Thou" set in south between the world wars, it is a rendition of Homer's "The Illiad", and both music and the cast make it a world similar to the unknown.)

    This show resonates so much with me and you’ve articulated very well a lot of the reasons why! The different approaches to limbo and the unknown coexisting, the classic Americana folklore vibes, and being an amazingly executed miniseries to name a few. Some other things you mentioned, I have not considered before: the cassette being a MacGuffin, as well as the Beast gaslighting people and how that’s even more poetic because he has them keep the lantern burning. Wirt’s refusal of the beast being essentially anticlimactic making narrative sense too.
    The copyright claims on the footage must be so frustrating, but you just putting a text explanation why - multiple times - was a clever and entertaining way to lampshade it.

(My personal favorites being the reference to shapenote/sacred harp and the bassoon) speaking of which, the bassoon, like most things referenced in otgw has been lost to time. I play the bassoon and its so rare that anyone plays it now. Anyways otgw rant over bc I could go on forever.

    I thought that Wirt and Greg were step-brothers rather than half-brothers, no biological connection between their parents only the father of Wirt - already widow or divorced - married Greg´s mother - which also was either widow, divorced or a single mother on her own too -and if they were half-brothers they must have shared one parent biologically (usually the father though not always) but not the other one.

    • @ObviousPuppet
      @ObviousPuppet  Год назад +3

      They are in fact biological half-brothers. Wirt explains when he sings to the tavern patrons that his mom remarried and then gave birth to Greg. I don't think it's only for the joke, though, I just liked the play on words.

      @@ObviousPuppet oh really it wasn´t translated in Spanish then, where it was stated as step-brothers instead, as it Greg´s mother married Wirt´s father there but no mention of him being actually birthed after it which set them as true half-brothers then.
