One thing Fujimoto absolutely loves to play with in his stories is perspective. The reason Denji is so beloved to us while so many others think of him as a joke in his world is because we know him. We know he sold his organs, would do anything for money, was severely taken advantage of even as he was risking his life. But his desires are so simple that you can't think of him as a sociopath. He is a teenager who just wants to live an easy life. To wake up in a warm bed, to a stocked fridge filled with food he likes, to spend time with people he enjoys being around. I think it's fitting that Aki is the first Devil Hunter we get introduced to, because his goal seems a lot more personal and "noble." Revenge on the Devil that took his family.
But then you go and see what the other character motivations are - and it's usually money. Ultimately, what Fujimoto is saying is that you can't knock anyone's motives for joining. This is a world where you can die at any moment on the whim of a Devil. You have to live in the moment as best as you can. This is why Kishibe says that Aki likely won't survive, while he says that Denji and Power have potential. They are selfish, but their goals are very simple ones that are achieved easily.
But even this gets thrown for a loop later on. Fujimoto refuses to stick to one underlying message in CSM, which makes it one of the much more interesting pieces of fiction in manga.

Denji and Power are a good move tonally because there really is a tension between having a healthy awareness of one's own emotions, and keeping one's emotions at arm's length, because if they weren't, you know it'd hurt. a lot.
emotional detachment as a coping mechanism makes for an interesting narrative because the lightheartedness of these characters jumps out at you during the times when it would be most appropriate to feel pain, and these two just... don't. they deny you a certain level of catharsis, and you become aware that they aren't getting catharsis either. to care is to lose, because if your emotions get you... if they grab hold of you, if you get invested, that's when you're done for. that's when something can be taken from you that you'd rather not lose. and for chronic losers, the smart move is to remain detached.
so then we kind of get to ask ourselves one of the core questions that Denji has been asking himself this whole time, in some form or another. if you literally don't feel like you can afford to feel secure enough to care about anything... what gives your life value? how do you find what matters to you when you recoil from emotional investment like it's going to burn you? it's counter intuitive. and while the detachment of these characters can be a bunch of surface level fun, the deeper meaning has a chance to lie dormant until the characters are tested, or find themselves challenged in some way, to commit to what they really care for. and at that point, the stakes are heightened, because they finally know what it is that they can't stand to lose.
this idea of what gives value to a life is incredibly important, because there's a battle going on between the people who want to exploit folks like Denji, and folks like Denji, who actually want to live their lives in the first place. after the exploitation, what are you left with? where do you draw your boundaries and say "no, this part is mine" in relation to your own self and resources? how do certain people benefit from the degradation of that boundary? and especially in a world that takes from you in so many different ways... even devil contracts will demand steep payment, like an eye, or some skin, or a year off of your lifespan. why do they want that? is the value literally just derived from how much it damages a person's quality of life to go without these things? the notion of fear has power in this narrative, so when it comes to why devils might derive value from sacrifice, all bets are off.

It's interesting to hear the opinions of someone who hasn't read the full manga. You really interrogated a story that's not even halfway told as far as you could, and you got some stuff right because of how well the story executes characterization, but also got some stuff so completely wrong because you haven't seen the whole story. I won't tell you what you got right and what you got wrong, because that would spoil it for you, but I will tell you that you should read the manga because it's legitimately one of the best manga ever made in terms of how it uses the medium of panel/sequence art so well, how much better some of its gags are when not animated, and more importantly, how reading it doesn't ruin the anime, it makes the anime better because you get to see what's being added by the anime, even though the anime does inherently take some things away, too. So, go read it! ASAP! Not just you, video creator, but also you, the viewer in the comments section! Go read this manga NOW!

While CSM is currently in its 2nd part I can confirm that the latter half of part 1 (basically everything after s1 lmao) are some of the best shit I’ve ever read including the phenomenal climax and conclusion. Part 2 is still a little early on but it’s still just as great as it was before so there’s no need to worry about any decline in quality.

Well shit.. you just explained like 90% of why this show just felt like such a unique experience that just tickled some funny bone in my brain that I never knew existed... all while I'm only like half way through the video lmao.
The tone of the show is wild. Fucking bonkers in how it switches while all feeling like the same show. I tried for a while to figure that out and you gave the answer: Denji is simply not built to act or react like a normal person would. He is very much just NOT an audience stand-in! So simple yet so profound... Or another possible option is he could be called a self-insert for the darkest parts of what a human could be.
I knew there was some reason this show just became one of my all time favorites ever, maybe my #1 in one season, despite it not having idk, gOd-tiER plot and character development like seen in AOT, Vinland Saga, Berserk, etc.
This season of anime just made me feel like I wanted to get to know the author Mr Fujimoto. To really pick apart his brain and honestly just get along over some drinks. I'd always been interested in the idea of writing stories, but this show just triggered some creative bone in me that just wants to say "fuck it go wild and be fucking weird while telling a genuine story"
Because that is something I see about Chainsaw Man. It feels fucking genuine.
I also just feel something honest-to-god, infinitely pure and good-hearted about the story too. Yes the story's probably gonna rip out my heart and curbstomp it a few times over and do the same to Denji x100, but at the end of the tunnel I feel like there's just gonna be something beautiful tried and learned for both of us.
It's rare that I wholeheartedly and actively invest in a protagonists journey, but I am so just... excited to see where Denji goes, hoping for him to find the love that he doesn't even know he's needed all his life yet.

That revenge moment where they kick katanaman in the balls actually made me shed a tear, i can't even begin to explain why...
The only time i had a similar feeling irl was when my grandmother had passed away, before she passed she actually told me that she's lived a happy and fullfilling llife and that it had been quite long enough for her after which she quickly started dementing and asked for euthanasia.

Hey I'm a bad person, but I will not spoil, you're right it's easy top 10% anime, Wich is still not exactly good but yeah, the tone is a mess and characters are dislikable mainly because the author probably didn't have time to think about the whole story, and just made shit up week by week, and it worked, if anything it is honest I suppose Wich is more than I can say of most anime.
