This video made me realize the significance of the Woodsman carrying the lantern in regards to the symbolic storytelling in Over the Garden Wall. The lantern is his coping mechanism for loosing his daughter -- his bargaining chip that helps him pretend he hasn't experienced loss. And yet, by accepting the burden of lantern bearer, he has chosen to linger in close proximity to the Beast -- otherwise known as despair and hopelessness. This is why Wirt's reaction to the Beast is such an important one. He could turn away from Greg in this moment and try to escape his feelings of grief and guilt by accepting this menial and ultimately unproductive existence, but instead he faces the problem head on. Accepts the reality of what is happening, looks the beast straight in the face, and speaks bluntly to him. By blowing out the lantern, he plunges himself into darkness. He has no plan or way of knowing if he or Greg will be ok after the lights go out. But by accepting the darkness and whatever follows he ultimately saves his brother's life as well as his own.
What a fantastic video. I'm such a nerd for the history of human storytelling and Over the Garden Wall. Having both of them in the same place is quite the treat!

I love how common it's become as a sort of annual transitional fall ritual.
I mentioned on a discord server earlier this month that I was doing the yearly rewatch with my friend group only for several other people to chime in and say they do that too.

This is one criminally underwatched video essay on this show. Nailed so much stuff from the writing, camerawork and mood that I adore! So glad I somehow came across this, knowing your effort you've put into this video hasn't gone unnoticed, and will hopefully be cherished by more of us who come together for this amazing show.

0:31 I live on thé middle of the woods and yeah! I agree, I will admit I have paranoia problems though and sometimes I will hallucinate sounds that aren’t really there so I usually go on walks with my cat or a person so my brain is less inclined to do spooky shit

1:18 Wirt's age is actually ambiguous. I've always headcannoned him as being 16 since he actually mentions he is in high school - and he just looks like a Junior for some reason. Though now that I think about it, by that logic, he should be 15, since the show takes place in the fall and he wouldn't have turned 16 yet... eh, it's too late to change my mind now

As someone who studies C.G.Jung's and his followers' works, it occurred to me that this cartoon not only resemble a fairy tale, but also wonderfully implements intrapsychological meanings every good fairy tale or a myth once had. The events of OTGW are nothing less but a completed step of Wirt's psychological individuation, and each character encountered is an aspect of Wirt's Self (including Greg, who isn't Greg the Person here, but the *impression* Wirt has of him, serving as a symbol for Wirt's innocence itself). By accessing his unconsciousness via the state between life and death (a dream-like state), Wirt can no longer supress its content and must let it have a say.
It would take hours to fully explain the psychological symbolism of OTGW, but here are some bits that really make me appreciate and love this art piece:
To be renewed, one must encounter the death of past self (negredo), it being the first step to psychological transformation. That's why OTGW starts with the episode where the main character "encounters death".
Greg: the Divine Child (Wirt's potency for growth and the possibility of a new beginning)
Woodsman: the Wise Old Man (an archetype that fully correlates with the Hermit tarot card, it showing a old man carrying a lantern)
Beatrice: the Anima (Wirt's soul, she's fully complementary to Wirt's current personality. She guides him through the Unknown and balances him through her actions and words)
The Beast: the Shadow (Wirt's darkest thoughts and feelings, including the implied thoughts of suicide or abandoning *the real* Greg in the river, since Wirt once viewed him as a burden)
    You're welcome.

Edit: Yeah, no, I can directly thank you for making me cry as well. The whole part about giving in to feeling comfortable in despair and hopelessness really hit close to home for me, given my past experiences with depression. I really enjoyed the whole video, and I'm honestly surprised that it came from such a small channel given how smooth and polished the final product was.

Wait wait wait; I’m barely in but Greg is five???? I thought he was like. Eight. Wirt being fourteen tracks.
Edit: okay finished part 1. Yeah him asking for a phone tipped me off that something funny was going on. Also, I think Wirt has some sort of anxiety disorder especially seeing as when we see the real-world events leading up to their fall into the Unknown, we can see that Wirt has this preconceived notions that are proven “false” in a sense - he’s so afraid of others opinions and is convinced he’s unlikable/something is “wrong” with him, when other people are friendly with him and probably enjoy his company. I have anxiety disorders and depression and this is something I’ve experienced.
I adore Greg but there’s definitely something about Wirt that is a Big Mood.
Ironically I hate halloween, but I do adore this show. (I tend to skip the Lorna episode as it makes me uncomfy).
