Most androids just have a tiny hole punch camera or pop-up camera, which I prefer since it gives you more screen real estate. I've also seen phone with a semi transparent lower resolution screen over the camer to make it look like there is no camera there at all. I think that the pill shape was the worst thing apple could have chosen. They should have learned from samsung when they tried it with the s10 plus. I think the whole dynamic island thing is just a way for apple to make the pill seem more like a feature rather than a byproduct of putting multiple sensors in the display.

It's a flashy software gimmick to try to mask the eyesore of a huge cutout they have to use vs the tiny dot the rest have; or less very shortly with under display. The got themselves into this spot with Face ID and the notch rather than some other tech until it could be hidden under display. A fingerprint reader in the power button or under display was the bridge needed back then to avoid this path.
It's a `status bar` that is oval in shape, located around the sensor gap, and it grows instead of pulling down. That is all. Apple is an expert in marketing the simple features like this as if they've made a ground breaking invention, and put a large price tag on it.

I LOVE THIS NEW FEATURE!!! It’s a great idea and it’s ingenious and incredibly useful. Getting sports scores on it is a great start. Who knows what extra info we’ll be able to get with other third party apps. I’m ordering a 14 Pro and look forest to years of good use out of the new Dynamic Island. Good going Apple!

I am not ready to give up that much of my screen for a notification bar. Haha. All those informations you get on pop ups, floaters, notification bar etc. That is a LOT of dead screen. Horrible
Not all phones needed a cutout, there were models with a pop-up front camera like the Xiaomi Mi 9T to name only one. Other designs have featured under-display cameras.

Some of those models are or were mass-selling models or even flagships from major brands, such as Samsung, LG, Xiaomi, Huawei, OnePlus, etc. Notably, the Samsung Z Fold 4, which is their current highest-end flagship, has an under-display camera. Admittedly the popup cameras have been dropped from many newer models in favor of the punch holes, but saying cutouts are necessary is not quite correct. Also, under-display technology is in active development and might appear in more and more phones.
i welcome any additional multitasking features on the iphone. i hope apple opens this up with more functionality to developers to be like a widget pop out mode for apps.
I think the dynamic island might be too much of a distraction when it changes size and shape so often along the top of the screen. I would prefer it if Apple had reduced the height of the display area so that the entire top area where the notch is located displayed nothing at all. That would have produced a perfect rectangular display area beneath the notch thereby resulting in a much improved presentation.
Looks really good. But making it a button is not really useful, as I use my phone with one hand mostly and they never offered a Pro model in iPhone mini form factor anyway.

They’re not really making the “dead space useful”, more making it inclusive with useable screen and interactive information outside of it. I love what they have done here.
There are quite literally pixels inside the pill which you can tap on. They have definitely made the dead space useful as well as seamlessly integrated it with the screen around it like you said

Trust me, don’t settle for the 14 Plus. Especially since the pro version have optical zoom, high refresh, OLED displays, fast wired & wireless charging, dynamic island and more. Your phone is with you all day, everyday, pay the extra $300 and get the Pro version. Btw the Xs Max was a flagship device, the 14 & 14 Plus aren’t, it’s always best to stick to flagships once you already used one. It’s like going from steak and lobster to beef and shrimp cup o noodles. 😂

They don't really use the space of the screen cutout, they use other space around it to make it more aesthetically pleasing. They could've done even better if the cutout didn't exist.

And the real reason why we didn't want a notch or pill is because of what happens when you watch movie content. You've still got that big pill chunk taken out of the screen when you turn it sideways and want to watch a movie. So what has changed to remedy this problem? We now have a "pill" which takes up space, plus the tiny chunk of it between the pill and the screen which is pretty much useless if consuming video content. Did you see any wow-inducing videos from Apple showing what happens to this pill when you turn the phone sideways and watch a movie? Nope....

Seems like the only solution is to cover everything, but if that’s possible why do they always have cutouts to begin with? Maybe a cutout large enough to leave the entire potential enlarged space open? That looks pretty big to leave open. We can only wait and see

Phones work even with screen protectors on it.. they may just make a hole punch cutout or put the whole protector screen on it.
@@davidbartley3214 of course we’ve all used them. But never has there been a time when what you need to press ends up on the edge of it. Seems like the only solution is to cover everything, but if that’s possible why do they always have cutouts to begin with? Maybe a cutout large enough to leave the entire potential enlarged space open? That looks pretty big to leave open. We can only wait and see
To answer my own question- there are a few out there already and they are full screen, no cutouts at all.
Yeah is not about it working or not. I'm just thinking, if there's a cutout, it will be uncomfortable, and if there's not, well... There's a reason why iphone screen protectors always have a cutout, I'm not sure how well face id would work
