      I tried a set of £300 Beats in a store once and I couldn't believe how horrible they sounded. I even said to a sales assistant that I think there might be something wrong with them but when he had a listen he said 'no, that's how they sound'. At the time I'd never owned any headphones that cost more than £50 and thought my Technics ones were great so was expecting great things from headphones that cost six times as much. In my opinion, they weren't even worth £30.

    I like mastering using headphones, ( i know, monitor speakers bla bla) ,im sure Akg K 712 is amazing for studio but you forgot the Akg K 240.
    This is a good video for people who understand what is mastering and work in studio.

    A note about the replaceable parts: I never thought I'd care about this, until my puppy got hold of them and chewed out the headband and ear cups only 1 year into me having them. Not a worry though. All fixed.

    I really like my Sony MDR-V6s. They're not the most expensive headphones in the world, but they're rock-solid both sonically and physically, and having been near-standard studio and live headphones for thirty years now they can't be too bad.

    Great video comparison, Leonard! One thing you didn't mention that is worth noting is the AKG K271 MKII's have a mute feature on both ears. Pull off either side, and the sound shuts off. Pull them off your head, both sides shut off. Replaceable ear cushions and mini XLR connectors, too. Very light and comfortable for long wear times. Please keep these awesome videos coming!

    Note the Beyerdynamic Dt 770 DOES not have “replaceable “cable unless you want to dissect it and rewire. Operative word to look for is “detachable”. The 250 ohms has coil cable while 80 ohm has straight cable. They both are hard wired.

    Awesome video , he knows exactly what he's talking about , he was to the point , smooth transitions from one product to the other , touching on the overall capabilities that people expect in studio headphones. Video was geared towards products that also work well in portible devices without the use of amps. Volume playing a role because of the number of refference gear like sennheiser 600s and 800s that need amps.
    specs mentioned gives people an idea what to expect when driven at say a normal 65 ohms rating and that would would be loud enough when used with a phone reaching a nominal 91 or 110.

    Leonard, first of all, Thank you for your primer on Studio Quality headphones. While there are so many great choices today, I believe it has only created more difficulty when it comes to choosing the proper product / tool for the required task at hand. So your video will certainly help to provide the info needed to guide your viewers specifically those, New to home recording tech.
    If they actually listen to your learned advice, they can avoid making expensive & misinformed purchases, causing them to replace their first buy . These are the " Tools of our Trade " and as I have discovered by using the wrong ones.
    ( tools that is, especially when trying to stretch a budget we all tend to skimp)
    Foolishly, choosing the wrong tool will usually cost you much more than mere money. Example : using a Screwdriver when you needed a Chisel, or a Nail & hammer to make a hole instead of a Drill & bit.
    Sure you may have gotten the job done, Oh yes also proved to be a crafty one.
    But despite your efforts at the end of the day, it shows as a shity result. One that took far too long to accomplish, & nothing you'd want to show off.
    So I say allow Leonard's product knowledge to become part of your learning curve. As your " Time & Effort " should be highly valued, by you & any others you may chose to collaborate with. If you're an accomplished player by now you've already spent a great deal of " Time & Effort " in learning, & honing your talent & skills, so you also sing, and its developed into your own unique style.
    Making good Home Studio Recording's has become quite affordable & much easier through the many modern technological advancements.
    Yet it still takes time to produce great results. While the learning curve can be lessened by the many wonderful people who willingly share their skills for free.
    The time you spend learning any new Skills can take a toll on your creativity & may also put a dent in your playing ability, time management becomes you.
    We all only have so much free time ( unless you're already a wealthy person, who needs no other income ) like most of us Working Musicians do we require a typical 9 to 5 Job or Career as a way of feeding housing ourselves & families.
    One that also offers Health Care or Medical plan, plus a 4-0-One day I might need to think about this ? " What the hell are you going to do " if you live long enough to actually retire. I know it sounds crazy when you're young, why do you think even the " Rolling Stones " crawl out of the woodwork and muster
    up the energy to go back on tour.
    Alan Parson's tells us " You can't take it with you, no matter what you do "

    Also look at frequency response graphs of the headphones you want to buy, Basically these graphs will give you a general idea of the natural EQ these are going to give your headphone, so if you see a large peak on the right side, you'll have a very fatiguing trebley set of headphones. Conversely if you see a peak or hump in the bass region your headphones are going to give a good thump around that range. FR Graphs help a lot more. Different companies do different ways of measuring Frequency response, I don't think I've seen a box advertise less than the range of human hearing 20hz-20khz but you might see different ways of measuring this, -3db, -5db,-10db if they are measured at -10db I'd take that measurement with a grain of salt.

    I've just bought the K712 solely for mixing and mastering. Matching to reference tracks. I have been using both KRK 8400 and Grado SR60 and both make my tracks translate very well. Infact, when I mix on the KRK is sounds crap on the Grado and with I mix on the Grado it sounds crap in the KRK.
    The problem I find on most headphones is that there is too much bloom in the low mid on the commercial reference tracks.
    It means I have to mix my tracks to sound how I DON'T want to sound.
    I have just listened to the K712 and found that the low mid is bloomy on that too. I listen to Mark Knopfler's solo albums and recording the same style.
    Mainly Albums 'Sailing to Philidelphia'
    'The Ragpickers Dream'
    'Shangrila' 'Kill to get Crimson'
    These are mixed by Chuck Ainley.
    Too much low mid on the vocal etc. on most headphones. I don't like to put a lot of low mid in my recordings so mixing on low mid heavy headphones are going to mean my mixes with have a whole on the low mids. Do you think I should send the K712 back and get the Q701?

      @Leesherwood 4 года назад

      By offering a wider frequency response than the human hearing range is more about being able to keep the sound accurate. Instruments like synthesizers and cymbals to name a few can go well above what we hear ,and these frequency response extended like that can keep the headphones from farting out at extremes and really keeping to what the manufacture wants which is accuracy to original recordings. Just like CD players go well beyond our hearing as well etc....................Reproduction

    I am partial to Ultrasone headphones, of which I have the Pro 750 and Pro 900 closed back models and I am very fond of both, they do have the S logic feature, but I used them for monitoring. Also have some Sony cd900st head monitors, but they are relatively recent acquisition and I haven't used them so much yet. Flat response is importance to me, but I am looking at eq correction software from Sonarworks, which is highly recommended in audio these days.

    i want a headphone that translates to iphones and cars and basically everywhere, my monitors krk rockit 5s color the sound as well as my ATH-M50s, i am currently looking at the AKG K712 and the Focal Spirit Professional, I also thought about just getting a bad sounding mixcube like the Behritone. What do you think is the best step for reaching pro sounding mixes on all platforms?

    I see you have a AKG 240 studio in your shelve. I don´t have a retail place where i could try them on, i just have to "listen" to who can make a real opinion. Can you help me with your comment about its sound quality according to average listener usually from Tidal app and a SMSL M2 dac to headphone. I'm curious about the "sound stage" thing.
    Thanks

    what is the relevance of the frequency range being being human hearing? It is intimated that the last pair are "bad" because they "only" go down to 14hz but human hearing can't hear below 20, so why is that a downside?

    • @CrankCase08
      @CrankCase08 6 лет назад

      You're right. All that stuff he was talking about frequency response is total garbage. Any headphone can have a very wide frequency response if the bar is set low enough, but it's irrelevant if it's outside of human range. A reasonably flat response is what's desirable.

    I know you did not reviews these BUT where do the senns hd 600 rate? Do you think they are world class as a lot of others do? I am comparing them to the beyer880 pro & maybe the AKG K701. Which do you like? Really a solid review.

    • @ZeBubba
      @ZeBubba 8 лет назад +1

      Senn HD600 is flattest of the bunch, imo. I've had K701s and they have little bass and quite strident highs. DT880 are good, but brighter than neutral too.

    Hello. Please Do you have any opinion on the Marshall monitor headphone? I bought them because they sounded great to me and look very cool (I am a guitar player and Marshall fan), but I can´t find a comparisson review between them and those tradicional brands. Have you ever tested them? Thaank You

    Thanks for the comprehensive rundown on headphones! I gravitate towards the AKG 712's as I've used AKG K240's for years and been pleased with them. The Charter Oak look interesting but probably have a price to match. I have used closed backed headphones for a period, and just felt locked into a soundproof room, it bothers me to be cutoff from the ambient sound of the enviroment I'm sitting in, perhaps it just subjective but these sense of isolation makes my head hurt.. So that would make me hesitant to go with that type of headphones so that pretty well rules out the Beyersdynamics which otherwise seem like the most popular choice.. All things considered then I'd likely go with AKG 721's if I can find them at the right price combined with a cheaper closed back Beyerdynamic for location recording and for focusing on issues in the bass frequencies..
    I'll check out the shop!

    I was wondering if you, or anyone could help me. I'm looking to get a pair of headphones and I'm willing to go up to £150 (around $230/€200), unless I could be convinced that any particular option was worth going slightly above that. I'll be using them at home, so either closed or open back headphones will be fine. I'll be using them for both listening to and producing, mainly electronic music. I'm currently leaning towards the M50x's. Is there a better option in my price range?

    I wanted to ask, what do you guys think of very high fidelity headphones?, like the Sennheiser HD 800 which are said to be very neutral and revealing.
    At their price point, is it better to just buy good monitor speakers, or are they a viable replacement for monitor speaker setups?

    Sir, really enjoyed your very informative, straight to the point video - I am currently researching, trying to decide my next headphones - currently have HD650, JH Audio Angie 8 driver IEM's & MEE 161 single BA IEM - listen mostly to electronic - for now will probably go with AKG 240 Mk 11 - then next year, thinking about adding AKG 712 - currently have SMSL 6th edition DAC & little Dot 1+ hybrid amp with GEC Riverstone tubes - any advice would be good - greetings from Philippines

    I'm looking at the AKG K612pros, AKG 240MKII, and the ATH-M70 headphones. What would likely be the best value out of the three? I also am yet to purchase an external amp. My current situation prevents me from using speaker monitors, so I want something that'll let me work primarily using those headphones. I'm also fairly new in this field, so I'm not sure if I want to drop $370 + amp on something like the k712s.

      +Donovan McCoy I can highly recommend AKG K612pros. Sound very very close to K712pros and they are much cheaper. Both are open-back headphones so they are great for mixing.

    Sony MDR-CD900ST are the standard in recording studios in Japan. Made by Sony Music for their own mastering purposes, they are (relatively) inexpensive and insanely good. I'm a little disappointed you didn't include them.

    What's a circumstance where one would want headphones that reach up to 30kHz?
