He began teaching himself to play guitar as a child; he studied in Rio with Uruguayan classical guitarist Isaías Sávio from the age of twelve. These weekly lessons entailed a long, harsh commute by rail and on foot from his family home in the western rural outskirts of Rio de Janeiro to the teacher's home in the hills of Santa Teresa. Given Bonfá's extraordinary dedication and talent for the guitar, Sávio excused the youngster's inability to pay for his lessons.
Hearing Bonfa play for the first time was a musical epiphany for me. I simply could not believe my ears. He set the benchmark and frankly I don't believe that has changed. I think now, that when God needs a quiet inspirational moment - he says: 'Hey Luiz - how about a tune?' Obrigado.
I am an amateur producer that has tried to make Electronic music, and this is so beyond my comprehension, and so amazing. Nobody can do this with a guitar anymore. He truly was a pioneer of sound. Amazing man, with an amazing sound.
I heard God asking: "Heeey! Do you know that @neurofire fellow? He was asking about Luiz Bonfa: Is that Dude cool or what?" I said: "Luiz is way cool! That other dude I don't know about. Pardon Father!" Then i wondered, thought it over.. You're very cool ;)
I think one of the reason other composer-song-writers eclipsed his success is that his songs are much more technically demanding -- they are not that easy to play -- so as years passed, they got less exposure that some of the other good songs a guitarist can pick up the 2nd time he hears it.. Bonfa's pieces take more skill & work. But they're so beautiful. He doesn't put anything in that doesn't absolutely need to be there; never over-states an expression. Love his music.
Maravilloso Luis Bonfá, prodigioso guitarrista. Brasil, pais hermoso que espero volver a visitar; naturaleza exuberante, gente tan amistosa y música tan bella. Saludos desde Argentina 🇦🇷🇧🇷
