I work in oil drilling industry in Siberia, used to work my shifts at -50 celsius, and our heating depended on diesel generators. It’s not as extreme as frostpunk, but man, your game really makes you feel that.

As a long time veteran of games of the city planner genre. I have always felt like a disconnected overseer. Not here, 11bit did a gorgeous job making me feel like my people's struggles were my own. Was even more painful when everyone had a face, and name and seeing that death list pile up in my graveyard.

Because I thought the same, and want to spitball a hypothesis before playing the game, I'd say it's because if the north is where it's already cold before the snows engulfed the Earth, that's where you'd find the Furnaces already being built. They were already needed there, so everyone heads towards them instead of trying to install them further south.

I feel like this game is a tribute to humanity's determination for survival. Its a testament to our strength and intelligence to fight the cold clutches of death. Our machines are products of our enginuity, and our enginuity will keep us warm, will keep us alive. Humanity's greatest achievement is imagination. Combine imagination with the passion and will for survival, we will hold fast against death. Our darkest hours often create the greatest triumphs.
Frostpunk is an artwork dedicated to our will to cling to life, and that artwork is beautifully imagined.

This really makes me want an animated (or otherwise) series about a last city. Not Snowpiercer or The Colony, a steampunk city struggling to survive. A cruel world of paranoid people and surprisingly, a classless society (that setup has been done enough, so not poor Vs rich, more multifaceted). The series could go into incredible detail about living in a frozen world for the sake of world-building. I would assume that the environment would be unlike anything in our world so Inuit and Eskimo traditions wouldn't entirely be recommended. The show would follow a few characters as we explore their motivations.
The old gruff and depressed woman who remembers stories about the old world (400 years since and true technology is not present because of necessity, unreliability and paranoia in the decades since the apocalypse). Older citizens have almost given up hope of returning to warmth and younger generations do not care for the past. They were born into an acceptance of peril and live heartily for their short, hardy lives must be sweet.
Their isn't much of a wealth disparity or ruling class, however, each role has benefits and drawbacks: Engineers are prized and applauded but any wrongdoing that hurts the machines is treated with harsh punishment.
City Guard are brutal yet cowardly, volunteering to avoid leaving city safety.
Deliverymen live even shorter lives, dying in the waste or later, from injury and icelung (the cold freezes their lungs).
Most people live deep in "The Well" and conditions are worse toward the surface. The hearth gives warmth to the entire city but is beginning to age, a secret kept by the engineers for fear of being punished and Of spreading a panic. The Engineer's believe they are the only ones who can fix the issues and work tirelessly/hopelessly to save the city before the secret gets out.
Radio is almost impossible with the raging storms above and sound is the most common method of communication, through televoice pipes in dwellings or foghorns signalling morning, assembly and delivery.
There are other players who have their own motivations: controlling the black market, restarting expeditions to find a new harbour, scientists trading morals for evolution, utilitarian scholars preaching the many over the few.
Then Vs Now. The series would explore themes of morality, sacrifice, hope, division, happiness. When no option is good enough, which consequence is better?
Basically, the series would be a Frostpunk playthrough formed into a narrative for people to watch and the choices are driven by different characters, not one player, conflicting and compounding with each other. One group wants to leave the city, this will hurt the survival of the city. One person cannot make a necessary choice because it would make them hypocritical.
I really want this as a book/series. Please, someone see this and make it happen.

    • @TheStapleGunKid
      @TheStapleGunKid 3 года назад +24

I'd love to see that too. A big budget Game of Thrones style series would be perfect for this. Honestly, one of the biggest challenges in running such a city is something that game didn't deal with since it only covers a short time span: Managing your natural population growth. Just imagine the nightmare of trying to keep your population from increasing too fast in a world with long days of hard labor, very few recreational activities, and no birth control. Every woman that gets pregnant is someone who is cut off from the labor force for nearly a year at least, and every new infant born means more people and resources have to be diverted to full-time parenting duties.

      @2KOOLURATOOLGaming 3 года назад +8

@@TheStapleGunKid Ye, it could follow several characters and have one or two decade-long time skips for each season. I like shorter series so I'd say 3 seasons and the 'main' character is only a kid for the first season or if you do 4 seasons, they aren't born yet. We skip to see them in a rebellious phase and later when they are a parent and settled in. Other characters have died but a few of the focus group are still alive by the end of the show as we have narrowed down to the most important storyline, the fate of the city.

"We knew the cost of our journey......
and we've paid the price ...
    .... a hundred times."
    This trailer....my heart...
    Many died on this journey.
Yet the way they say is mean that these deaths are not "a" price that was paid.
Each life mattered. "Each" life lost was "a" grim price that they had to pay to reach their destination.
They paid a hundred times, each time was as devastating as the others.
This really shows the magnitude of their care for life, for each other.
Even more so, the magnitude of hope they have for the destination.

I noticed that it was being sold with the Victorian edition, but I already bought the game and, as much as I would personally be willing to give you guys more money, my parents aren't so keen on that idea. Basically, my question is this: do you guys sell that book separately as well? I've looked everywhere and I can find nothing. Thanks for any help you guys can give!

It was a long time since a strate... a surviva... any type of game had bring me this such of joy. Frostpunk is an instrument of beatiful atmosphere, truly epic story telling, and mesmerizing music mixed in an intense, hardcore strategy/survival game. And it's more than that. Frostpunk shows you a mirror, reflecting a piece of personality that lies within you. And it's asks the questions. What can you became in such wrong situation as a leader? How far you will go, in order to ensure the survival of your people? The survival of the last stand of humanity?

Idea for a spin-off/prequel/sequel to Frostpunk. A game focused on those Land Dreadnoughts. Manage the dreadnoughts journeys across the frostlands, gathering food and fuel, collecting scrap metal and steam cores to repair the dreadnought when it breaks down, guiding it through rough terrain, scouting out safe routes for the dreadnought to take, locate cities both successful, failed, and collapsing to take on refugees and drop them off, salvage automatons to help streamline dreadnought functions and more.

I beat the main scenario twice now. At first, going in blind and new to the mechanics, I had to resort to brutal means to secure the survival of the city, and still only barely achieved it. The second time, knowing what was coming and being far more familiar with the tools at my disposal, I brought my people not only survival, but peace, pride and even prosperity.
Yet even after all that, this trailer/cinematic gives me absolute goosebumps at the end. The music, voice-over and artwork are just awesome and so evocative together.

I'm a really patient gamer so I waited this long to get the game on Steam during the last sale (even after it being handed to me free by Epic), and holy crap I wasn't expecting a city builder to be packed with so much detail, beautiful graphics and artwork, emotion, even moments that make you break out in tears. Along with the masterfully written soundtrack, this game is a true gem, thanks to everyone who worked on it!

I had just enough time to instal and play the game for 30 minutes before I had to go to work. 30 minutes damn well spent! :D

I hope Frostpunk gets a movie in the future, that way other people who don't play games can know of this masterpiece.

My first city lost 400 souls. My second lost barely any people. So happy playing this game and becoming better at it!
