    First of all, never build workshops in the inner ring, or even the first four rings. They have good insulation and can last the first week or more even without heaters before people really start getting ill in them.
    Second, Its a bit more effective to build gathering huts first because they start out comfortable and make people harvest faster. After you have the wood, build a medical post, then tents. This combo slows down science slightly but it helps keep people from getting sick, which can hurt everything else a lot more, particularly if you end up with gravelly ill.
    Third, partition out the entire first 4 rings for homes. Placing 4-5 steam hubs with maxed out range on the 4th ring will heat all homes in the center, and a fair bit of stuff outside of the 4th ring. Its also way more effective because 4 steam hubs cost as much coal as the generator at max range, but cover more area and do it more efficiently.
    Third and a half, NEVER use the generator range upgrades. Steam hubs are better in range and cost.
    Third and three quarters, having all the homes center like this works well for making sure watch towers and churches are most effective.
    Fourth, always get corpse pit and then organ transplantation. Sure deaths might cost more hope, but if you do it right you won`t have to worry about deaths. Also you doctors can transplant hearts form snowmen if you can keep everyone alive, so its always a flat +20%
    Fifth, use extended shift as much as discontent will allow. It is a 40% resource increase.
    And thats all the tips I have for you.

      By prone to playing the good guy I mean even when I set out to be evil I end up as either good or morally grey in games.

    Just learnt the other day that you can use the middle mouse button to rotate the workshop. Gives you some more options on building placement. I did not know about the automation being able to research. I may change my strat so early game have the workshop on ring two due to insulation better. Late game move them out and rotate them and put an automate them. Replace the workshop with a tent/house etc to max houses near the center. I find putting as many tents/houses as closer to the center works best. I generally will upgrade the outer ones since they are colder. The ones in the middle can wait. If they get to cold on the outer rings will deploy a steam hub around ring 3. This will heat the cold homes and I will expand housing around the steam hub.

    • @BlackSunFen
      @BlackSunFen 5 лет назад +19

      Well to me it is a bit like the faster gathering techniques later in the tech tree. I've akways imagined that the faster gathering was more like a protocole, a method or a way of orgaizing the gathering. Since in the real life their were people who studied the ways of production, the techniques of organizing a chain of production in order to maximize it. And I feel like it's exactly what faster gathring is about.

    Usually i prefer to build workshops in the second or even third ring, since workshops already have 2 insulation, so I can keep building houses as near as possible to the generator. Also, i'm not sure about this, but i think heaters for workplaces are more efficient than building a steam hub in the middle of two or three buildings (for exemple a coal thumper and two gathering posts).

    • @rockpapershot
      @rockpapershot  6 лет назад +28

      A big part of the hubs appeal, for me, is the automation. I sometimes mess up juggling lots of heaters, but that's really a personal preference. I wish you could automate the heaters like you can the hubs.

    • @daniellusher7494

    • @rockpapershot
      @rockpapershot  6 лет назад +20

      You're right, and I feel silly. But it still comes down to numbers for me - having to keep track of all those individual heaters (based on changing temperature) was getting a little messy, so I doubled down on hubs.

    • @daniellusher7494
      @daniellusher7494 6 лет назад +15

      Hubs are more efficient if you use the space wisely. If you can afford to have both running you can make even the worst of the storm liveable conditions (at least in the workplace), Especially with overcrowding infirmaries. 30 people (10 workers 20 sick) with +9 heat (+2 insulation, +3 heater, +4 steam hub) and you're golden. It's how I survived with no death from frostbite even though I had over 300 sick. Also Triage instantly heals 2/3rds, even if they don't fit in a medical building, and the deaths don't count as dying from sickness. Fully upgraded autos run infirmaries at 120% efficiency compared to humans, if you follow the faith path. At a cost of raw food you can add a bonus to heat in the workplace with soup kitchens

    • @cantankeroustank6904
      @cantankeroustank6904 6 лет назад +3

      I think both have their own benefits. In the early game heaters are cheaper for any solitary buildings (gathering huts, steelworks, wall drills and whatnot) but when you start to have 3 or more buildings clumped together, hubs and their '3 coal/h' become the cheaper option. Then, in the late game, heaters become relevant again for any low insulation buildings and for almost all buildings during those extra cold days.

    Thanks for the tips. While like other said, there are better ways, but, this helped me so much. I normally build resources hubs before going into research. And this certainly helped me understand the major difference. Here is what I do.
    1. Get 15 to coal, 15 to iron, all to wood on day1. After trying your way and this way, I noticed I get so much more resources in day1. The faster gathering isn't all that useful I might add.
    2. Build 2 workshops like you said, but, on 2 and 2.5 ring behind the stockpile. They don't really need heat right away. And going this way I can put steam hub later with really good line up.
    3. Build hospital and 7 tents. Leaving 10 wood for research. Once everything is built, quickly start research Beacon ASAP. This is because I noticed I only have enough time to get Beacon, Steam hub, and Wall Drill before the deep freeze. During deep freeze, I can mine the wall for super important wood.
    4. Send 15 to free iron and everyone to fresh wood (except engineers ofc) put everything to extended shift once the law is passed. Including empty pile, easier to manage.
    5. End of day2, I build Beacon, cook house, and 8th tent. Don't want them to starve, which they just stand there doing nothing. And get the hope boost due to 8th tent.
    6. Day3 is 15 coal, 5 iron, more wood.
    7. I also skip heater. I don't see the point. I need steam hub at iron walls. Which can put coal thumber level 2 and 4 collection posts there.
    So far, this seems to be a very good outcome. Maybe the heater is good? But, it is very limited. Steam hub is so much better.

    Additional tip: try to have as many people working as possible. Idle hands means you lose the chance to get research done, to heal the ill, to gather materials, to scout/outpost, to serve at the Public House, or to handle your Order/Faith branch, which can mean issues later when you're desperately preparing for the end game. The only exception to this rule is kids; it's far better in the long run to go with Child Shelters and Apprentices, because those Medical or Engineering boosts are a life saver

    • @jacqslabz

    The hunters to workers strategy doesn't work anymore due to the hunters exhaustion, it'll just say workers are resting after hunt

  • @coenisgreat
    @coenisgreat 6 лет назад +51

    Well, they patched the Hunter’s Hut trick. Now the workers there have to rest during the day and cannot do any further work for quite some time outside of hunting. One other trick you can do with Outposts, is that when you’ve received the daily delivery of whatever resource you’re waiting for, pack up and then immediately rebuild the outpost team at the location, it then sends a new resource delivery your way immediately.

    • @rockpapershot
      @rockpapershot  6 лет назад +8

      The danger of offering any advice is that the game changes along the line. It was fun exploiting hunters while it lasted.

    • @coenisgreat

      Rock Paper Shotgun indeed. Oh well. I never used the trick myself... probably would’ve been useful X3

    • @QuestionDeca
      @QuestionDeca 4 года назад

      They've also seemingly patched the Outposts trick, but what they won't patch out is being able to pack up the outpost immediately after sending out the latest delivery and having the outpost team get back to the city before the delivery (depending on the faster outpost teams research and timing), which is good for milking that last steam core in New Home, depending on timing.

  • @losingluke
    @losingluke 2 года назад +8

    some nice advise:
    hothouses as soon as you can
    build gathering posts not workshops first
    workshops in the outer ring
    dont build tents around the generator, build them as if you were doing it around a steam hub
    rush for extended shift law
    never get preserve life, radical treatment is significantly better
    automatons are overrated, yes they are good but people can do the job almost as well, dont waste too many resources rushing robots
    dont extend generator range, steam hubs are way more coal efficient
    also this is very morally questionable but if you passed child shelters instead of labor, you can uhhh... well amputees take half rations so, yeah figure it out for yourself (hint: tent outside heat zone)

      Easy fix: save before exploring the location. If your men die, reload your previous save and try again. Eventually, the attempt will be successful. Otherwise, you can gamble at it and risk losing people, resources, and time.

    Don’t build the workshops on the inner circle. You will find 2 workshops fit nicely behind the stock pile. And research the 2nd tear to get to bunkhouses asap. You can have bunkhouses on the first day if you do this. Use emergency shift over height if you messed it up.

    I always set to gathering everything right away. 30 people on coal (2 piles), 25 on crates (2 piles, 15 and 10) and 10 on steel. Nobody wasting time building anything just yet, because...people can build outside of shift hours. Generator goes on ASAP, and then I hit the workshop, kitchen and start queueing up 8 homes, or as many as I have the materials for at least. Heaters is one of my first researches because my kitchen goes on ring 2 of the generator, leaving all the space aside from the general storage stockpile in ring 1 for housing. This allows me to save steam cores as I don't have to build steam hubs just yet, until I get fighting arenas and the pub set up with housing huddled around them.

    • @GlassDeviant
      @GlassDeviant 5 лет назад

      You can to a point, but if you have any automatons (like the one you start with in Arks) they need at least some time each day to refuel. At -20 tents are enough to keep your population sufficiently warm.

    The weather outside is boiling but inside the temperatures is low, tempers are high and we're contemplating whether it's ok to eat the dead. This week on the Space Ark we're discussing fighting games and first up it's...

  • @jamesmalcom3752
    @jamesmalcom3752 Год назад +1

    You can turn on overdrive first night to reduce sick by like 2 if you decide wait tell night 2 on tents
    -you don't have to run generator during work hours before first temp drop
    -scout teams move faster to locations they've been to so go there then go to the new point and if you find survivors but dont need them/arnt ready to feed that many don't take them just move on so when you show up it says survivors don't click a or x or whatever pc is just hit back and comeback later.

    • @jamesmalcom3752
      @jamesmalcom3752 Год назад

      Turns out sickness has to do with temp stats throughout the day but your getting at least 2 sick on the first night on pretty much every difficulty no matter what you do.

    As a player who learned all of these tips on my own or through this video, I can validate these to be very solid pointers for new founders of New London. These won't apply to every scenario sadly but as general advice, it goes a long way, well done! ^^
    Admittedly, Steam Hubs can get pretty expensive if you build too many, it's good to make a backup plan by putting less insulated buildings such as Medical Tents and Early Residences closer to the generator. The likes of Workshops and Factories are usually well insulated and don't require additional heat via Radiators, Generator Range or Hubs until later on when the temperature starts to go for the method of "2 Steps colder, 1 Step warmer".
    One thing i am curious about though is how the FROST does a 3-4 Story Machine work in a Cook/Hothouse?!
