Backhandclear tutorial: How to play a powerful backhand in Badminton

  • Опубликовано: 6 авг 2019
  • A lot of badminton players think, that they cannot play a backhandclear because a lack of power, but in reality the technique plays a much bigger role. Of course you need some power in your arm, if you want to play the shuttle all the way to back, but with the right technique it is less than you think.
    In my eyes the four keypoints for a powerful backhand are:
    1) Grip
    2) Forearmrotation
    3) Elbow
    4) Wrist
    1) The right grip is important if you want to hit a backhand with power. A lot of players try to use a thumbgrip, but as soon as you are hitting it behind the body (and that is where you usually need to play a backhand) you can't generat any power with that grip. It will even force you to bend your wrist in order to hit the shuttle and that will cost you a lot of power (more about that later). To creat power besides or behind your body you have to use a grip that allows forearmrotation like the V-Grip. In addition to that you should also put your thumb on the edge of the grip. That will help you to generate extra power when you tighten the grip during impact.
    For more details about the grip just check out my grip tutorial: • Badminton Grip Tutoria...
    2) Forearmrotation
    As i said you should use a grip that allows forearmrotation. Just like on forehand overhandshots your forearm is the biggest source for power. For backhandshots you just have to rotate in the other direction, what usually is a bit harder but still key to accelerate the racket in the short given time.
    3) Elbow
    The elbow is very good keypoint to focus on. Don't make the mistake to start with your elbow too far up but give yourself some room to accelerate. Start with a relaxed arm and low elbow and start the armmovement by throwing the elbow towards the shuttle. If you do it right and still keep your arm relaxed, the rackethead should fall down and give you a perfect position for accleerating the racket by stretching the arm and rotating the forearm.
    4) Wrist
    The wrist can be used to change the direction of the shuttle, but it should never be used to produce power in shots. When you want to hit with power, try to keep a fixed wrist during the impact, otherwise you will loose power. Also bending the wrist too much will cause problems, because it will bring a lot of tension to your forearm. For a powerful shot you need a relaxed arm until the very last moment, so try to find a grip that helps you to keep the wrist in a neutral position.

    Tobias, I really love the way you are teaching how to control overall body especially arm and elbow. most of the channel only tells us how to use the wrist but's it's very difficult for beginners since we have that kind of wrist power. keep doing this channel, very impressive and practical.

    After this video, I adjust my grip and my backhand clear is not only more powerful & accurate but it doesn't hurt my wrist. Thank You so much.

    Thanks. Have seen many videos on this topic. Although many people are liking I believe it could be better. First seems I didn't hear "Bevel grip" at all, which I think is very important. Also there is an important nuance about what distance to hold the racket from it lower end. The effect is better and more powerful when moving a few mm upwards towards the bending shaft, compared to the grip for a power shot.

    Changing different grip (or adjust it a bit) upto your standing location is a good and a clear idea! It is a key for backhand clear. Many teachers just show you one fixed grip for it and I found actually they changed it time by time upto their standing location too. Thank you very much for your video!

    • @tobiaswadenka8435
      @tobiaswadenka8435  4 года назад

      Yes, super important to be flexible with the grip, otherwise you have to adjust too much with the wrist what makes it a lot harder to hit with power and control

    Thank you very much . It's because of you I learnt the backhand clear . I recently started playing badminton . And I struggled with the back hand clear . I was using my wrist to hit the shuttle and I coudnt generate any power . And it landed in the middle of my opponent's court and they used to smash me . And later they started teasing me by wantedly hitting the shuttle to my backhand . And then I watched your video . Learned about the forearm rotation in backhand . And the next day it was magic

  • @calvinbernard
    @calvinbernard 4 года назад

    Backhand clear especially if you are out of position, in my opinion is the hardest shot to play in badminton. But it is also one of the most beautiful shots to play if executed correctly. I have been training and playing badminton for years now, and it takes practice, confidence and feeling to play this shot perfectly. Theoretically it is very straight forward but in actuality it is not.

I will make a video about these circus shots at a certain point but it is way more important to focus on the basics first if you want to become a really good player so i also focus on basics first ;)

    Questions:
    1. How important (or not) can it be to land your foot (racket leg) at the same time as hitting the shuttle? Does it help generate more power?
    2. Also, is the body trunk also to be used to generate power consciously, or should it just flow with the shot naturally?
    Finally, lots of thanks and regards from India 🇮🇳
