- Caithness is the most northerly county on the mainland of Great Britain and it has excellent night skies due to lack of light pollution. In fact Caithness has one of the darkest night skies in the whole UK so you can see arc of Milky Way stretching overhead on every moonless night if the sky is clear.
Due to county location on the far north, in Caithness you can see the Northern Lights (Aurora Borealis) more often than from every other place in mainland Britain.

Thanks, glad you like it. It's difficult to say how much time I have spend on this as I have gathered this material over last 12 months. Most time consuming are Milky Way shots, as for 10 sec. sequence you need to spend about 3 hours on the field shooting ... and slowly freezing ;).

Simply amazing, just simply amazing!
I used to live in East Mey way back in the early 90's and can still remember the fantastic views over the sea to Orkney and the amazing starry skies and occasional Norther Lights.
Now I live in Eastern Finland and have even more impressive views of the starry skies (at least during the winter as summers are just light) but despite having all the forest and lakes here as a backdrop you just can't beat the views over the sea.

This is so beautiful! I don't live in a place with such fantastic skies but thanks to you and You Tube I can still share a tiny bit of the spectacular show. The images go great with the music. Send shivers down my spine. Please do more!

Yes, Caithness lack of real forests but coastal views and cliffs are amazing.

A truly wonderful little film. The land of my childhood and teenage years and a beautiful landscape, crowned by the wonders of the night sky.
You have made this exile realise what they are missing - I will be playing this (and your Noctilucent Clouds and Aurora film) again and again. The music is very apt for the majesty of the North...

went last year and if anyone here has never experienced a truly dark sky then scotland is the place to go its truly breath taking when you step out of your car and can see so much with the naked eye

Auroras are visible from Caithness from the end of August till the beginning of May but only few days in the month depends on solar activity.
This just stoked up us for the fishing trip we are organizing for May! thanks!

Summer is not too good to see aurora as sky is not dark enough at this time of year but you can see noctilucent clouds instead.

Odstępy były różne w zależności od obiektu. Większość ujęć zorzy była robiona co 8 sekund a Drogi Mlecznej co 30 sekund, czyli tyle ile trwało naświetlanie jednej klatki dla każdego z tych ujęć.

Hi. Yes I think it is large probability to see aurora in October in Caithness and on Orkney although it is never guaranteed and depends on Sun activity and weather. Good luck with aurora hunting.
For most shots I have used Canon 7D with 10mm Sigma diagonal fisheye lens. But some sequences are also shot with Canon 1000D with 18-55mm kit lens or old manual M42 fit lens 28mm Chinon.

I spent 3 months working at Reiss, it's quite laid back, and the residents there are decent folk, the Brown Trout Pub in Watten is ok, they sell Newcastle Brown Ale

I was making new Milky Way time lapse last night, get back home at 3 am.
There is forecast for aurora tonight, so I will be hunting auroras although weather forecast for tonight does not look too promissing.

Wow - amazing stuff Maciej! I studed astrophysics at St Andrews about 20 years ago but am now down on the south coast of England where the light pollution is more of an issue than in Caithness! What equipment do you use? I love the way you can program a super-slow pan or zoom! How do you manage to get such a deep exposure to show the milky way and such sharp star images in such long time-lapse footage?

Większość sekwencji jest zrobiona Canonem 7D z obiektywem Sigmy 10mm diagonal fisheye f/2.8.
Ale jest też kilka ujęć zrobionych moim starym Canonem 1000D z kitowym obiektywem 18-55mm f/3.5.
