The rate of executions were five times higher than the European average - and of the accused, 85% were women.

Similar stories are still taking place today. The only thing that changes is the nature of the accusation. That's when you realise we aren't really evolving as a species (or if we are it is at such a slow rate that it is not perceptible!).

This might be true but in terms of the witch trials it was the first time the aristocracy, the church and the monarchy really ganged together, after the widespread peasant uprisings after the Plague actually threatened them. The earliest witch trials were poor people who couldn't pay their way any more. The devil worship stuff got added onto the witch trials later. The witch trials in Europe were much more about bringing the peasants to heel, after the commons were also enclosed following the peasant wars. and after 3 centuries of it in Europe working out so well to accomplish this, the emerging capitalist class exported witch trials to divide and conquer communities on stolen lands as a weapon of colonialism.
Imagine being the witch hunter that gets cancelled 400 years later.
Fun fact: Many of the Scottish emigrants who left for America were the ones who started the Salem Witch Trials.

With her story apparently so widely known I'm shocked and frankly expect more from the local and national Scottish government to right this wrong. It is worrying enough when national treasures such as Bannockburn are even hinted at being threatened by development (only saved at the ridiculously last minute when local officials remembered that historical sites are Important), but to leave a known victim of the witch trials in a watery grave; and nothing is done about it for centuries... is just inexcusable.

@@modusbee9092yes. I found my 9th great grandfather and his sister on the list provided by the university of Edinburgh with details of their trials. They were both leaders of their respective covens and were aided by the others to escape in order to save the knowledge.
It is kind of frightening of humanity to suppose that if we had a less efficient legal system and police, blind mob mentality would probably today also cause these sorts of killings (in Europe).

This behavior/thinking is a lot of what sorts of things that still control how we react to things and shows how we all need to look inside ourselves and try to understand that we all have a part that is not rational, and dangerous.

There are other platforms for history documentaries, or does the BBC imagine that visitors to the news channel might be diverted to their historical material. I just find this odd.

It was also the Catholics who invented the book "The Hammer of the witches". Jesus forbad old testament death penalties in John 8:7, so none of these witch killers were Christians. The idea was - "if you drown you are innocent, and if you float you are guilty and will be executed".
