  • Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (27 April [O.S. 15 April] 1891 - 5 March 1953) was a Russian Soviet composer, pianist and conductor. As the creator of acknowledged masterpieces across numerous music genres, he is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. His works include such widely heard pieces as the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet-from which "Dance of the Knights" is taken-and Peter and the Wolf. Of the established forms and genres in which he worked, he created - excluding juvenilia - seven completed operas, seven symphonies, eight ballets, five piano concertos, two violin concertos, a cello concerto, a symphony-concerto for cello and orchestra, and nine completed piano sonatas.
A graduate of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Prokofiev initially made his name as an iconoclastic composer-pianist, achieving notoriety with a series of ferociously dissonant and virtuosic works for his instrument, including his first two piano concertos. In 1915, Prokofiev made a decisive break from the standard composer-pianist category with his orchestral Scythian Suite, compiled from music originally composed for a ballet commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes. Diaghilev commissioned three further ballets from Prokofiev-Chout, Le pas d'acier and The Prodigal Son-which at the time of their original production all caused a sensation among both critics and colleagues. Prokofiev's greatest interest, however, was opera, and he composed several works in that genre, including The Gambler and The Fiery Angel. Prokofiev's one operatic success during his lifetime was The Love for Three Oranges, composed for the Chicago Opera and subsequently performed over the following decade in Europe and Russia.
After the Revolution of 1917, Prokofiev left Russia with the official blessing of the Soviet minister Anatoly Lunacharsky, and resided in the United States, then Germany, then Paris, making his living as a composer, pianist and conductor. During that time, he married a Spanish singer, Carolina (Lina) Codina, with whom he had two sons. In the early 1930s, the Great Depression diminished opportunities for Prokofiev's ballets and operas to be staged in America and western Europe. Prokofiev, who regarded himself as composer foremost, resented the time taken by touring as a pianist, and increasingly turned to the Soviet Union for commissions of new music; in 1936, he finally returned to his homeland with his family. He enjoyed some success there - notably with Lieutenant Kijé, Peter and the Wolf, Romeo and Juliet, and perhaps above all with Alexander Nevsky.
The Nazi invasion of the USSR spurred him to compose his most ambitious work, an operatic version of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. In 1948, Prokofiev was attacked for producing "anti-democratic formalism." Nevertheless, he enjoyed personal and artistic support from a new generation of Russian performers, notably Sviatoslav Richter and Mstislav Rostropovich: he wrote his ninth piano sonata for the former and his Symphony-Concerto for the latter.

    S. Prokofiev was one of the most impressive artist of the 20th century. He wrote miracles that no one could imagine.
This so called "best of Prokofiev" does not describe S.P.'s style.
Take a look at his 5th symphony, his symphonic suite "Love of Three Oranges" or even his Zdravitsa. Prokofiev was a true genius.

Hello Jomtek! ... Late in life I'm just discovering S.P.'s genius. Learning not to run away from dissonance in classical music .... it has always seemed right in jazz. Thank you for the timestamps. I'm hearing much which is familiar but did not know its source. .. This quest stems from a RUclips interview with Alex Malofeev, the young prodigy who always mentions Prokofiev. I will listen to your other suggestions, above.

Prokofiev knows how to touch on every human emotion; frivolity, despair, swooning, anger, giddiness, and provocation. This truly is beautiful music. It doesn't get stale or become overly dramatic. It just captures many moments.

The Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Chopin bait that drew our grandparents to "classical"music now has to be replaced by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Mahler. I defy any reasonably musical modern person to resist the Romeo and Juliet suites here. These "best of" selections offer a great service. Thanks.

And the Oscar goes to Sergei Prokofiev. If Stravinsky has his own Hollywood Walk of Fame Star... Prokofiev should have one too. There are two stars added a year and I think Prokofiev, who inspired a whole generation of film composers, should have his own. His music is dramatic, ethereally beautiful, and highly evocative. It is timeless as great music must be.

People can be so stupid at times, fighting over which genre or artist is better than the other, some even saying they're better than the artists they critic, and I'm here, enjoying the kind of music I like and just ignoring the rest, they are honestly just loosing their time, instead of being happy, instead of being calm and relaxed, they foolishly choose to rather critic and be angry at anything that's not their taste.

Yet it remains that this is what I would call "light" Prokofiev. I'd consider Prokofiev's style not being these 3 pieces (which I do not dislike) compared to other pieces he made. If you're interested into a bit more Prokofiev I'd recommend you taking a look at a bit less popular pieces such as his Sonatas for Piano, or his Concerto for Violin/Piano, his 2nd symphony (my favourite) and his 3rd. These are of course harder to listen to but I personally am huge admirator of Prokofiev and he's my favourite composer by far.

Sure, you can't say you know deeply a composer just by a top 3 or 5. But I'm just trying to say that especially for this one, it's just not Prokofiev's style. But I appreciate you took the time to share your opinion :)

Death metal band Necrophagist plays a part of the Dance of the Knights with 33 seconds left in their song "Only Ash Remains." It's a cool bit that adds to the whole "possession" vibe of the lyrics.

I catch myself each time I think 'This is just like James Horner/John Williams,' because this is undoubtedly older material. Surely inspirational for the 2 who are but a pair in a very long list.
    This is stuff is grand.

The song at 55 mins is the same one Sting interpreted on his song 'Russians' except Sting's version is bigger and more dramatic which I prefer. The live version of that song at Berlin with the symphony orchestra which is on his DVD Live in Berlin is amazing!

At the 32:28 mark, one can hear how film composer James Horner was influenced by Prokofiev when he composed the score for 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock', especially during the sequence when a destroyed Enterprise was hurtling towards the unstable Genesis planet.

*****: James Horner may have been Prokofiev reincarnated. Here are the numbers:
James Horner was born in 1953.
      Sergei Prokofiev died in 1953.
Horner lived 61 years 10 months and 9 days
Prokofiev lived 61 years 10 months and 11 days
      Horner has two daughters
      Prokofiev had two sons
Both men wrote powerful epic film scores based on war and redemption:
      Horner: Braveheart, Glory
      Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky
      Both men were enthusiasts:
      Prokofiev loved automobiles
      Horner loved airplanes
