The Best of Prokofiev

- Sergei Sergeyevich Prokofiev (27 April [O.S. 15 April] 1891 - 5 March 1953) was a Russian Soviet composer, pianist and conductor. As the creator of acknowledged masterpieces across numerous music genres, he is regarded as one of the major composers of the 20th century. His works include such widely heard pieces as the March from The Love for Three Oranges, the suite Lieutenant Kijé, the ballet Romeo and Juliet-from which "Dance of the Knights" is taken-and Peter and the Wolf. Of the established forms and genres in which he worked, he created - excluding juvenilia - seven completed operas, seven symphonies, eight ballets, five piano concertos, two violin concertos, a cello concerto, a symphony-concerto for cello and orchestra, and nine completed piano sonatas.
A graduate of the Saint Petersburg Conservatory, Prokofiev initially made his name as an iconoclastic composer-pianist, achieving notoriety with a series of ferociously dissonant and virtuosic works for his instrument, including his first two piano concertos. In 1915, Prokofiev made a decisive break from the standard composer-pianist category with his orchestral Scythian Suite, compiled from music originally composed for a ballet commissioned by Sergei Diaghilev of the Ballets Russes. Diaghilev commissioned three further ballets from Prokofiev-Chout, Le pas d'acier and The Prodigal Son-which at the time of their original production all caused a sensation among both critics and colleagues. Prokofiev's greatest interest, however, was opera, and he composed several works in that genre, including The Gambler and The Fiery Angel. Prokofiev's one operatic success during his lifetime was The Love for Three Oranges, composed for the Chicago Opera and subsequently performed over the following decade in Europe and Russia.
After the Revolution of 1917, Prokofiev left Russia with the official blessing of the Soviet minister Anatoly Lunacharsky, and resided in the United States, then Germany, then Paris, making his living as a composer, pianist and conductor. During that time, he married a Spanish singer, Carolina (Lina) Codina, with whom he had two sons. In the early 1930s, the Great Depression diminished opportunities for Prokofiev's ballets and operas to be staged in America and western Europe. Prokofiev, who regarded himself as composer foremost, resented the time taken by touring as a pianist, and increasingly turned to the Soviet Union for commissions of new music; in 1936, he finally returned to his homeland with his family. He enjoyed some success there - notably with Lieutenant Kijé, Peter and the Wolf, Romeo and Juliet, and perhaps above all with Alexander Nevsky.
The Nazi invasion of the USSR spurred him to compose his most ambitious work, an operatic version of Leo Tolstoy's War and Peace. In 1948, Prokofiev was attacked for producing "anti-democratic formalism." Nevertheless, he enjoyed personal and artistic support from a new generation of Russian performers, notably Sviatoslav Richter and Mstislav Rostropovich: he wrote his ninth piano sonata for the former and his Symphony-Concerto for the latter.

S. Prokofiev was one of the most impressive artist of the 20th century. He wrote miracles that no one could imagine.
This so called "best of Prokofiev" does not describe S.P.'s style.
Take a look at his 5th symphony, his symphonic suite "Love of Three Oranges" or even his Zdravitsa. Prokofiev was a true genius.
Prokofiev ♥️
Hello Jomtek! ... Late in life I'm just discovering S.P.'s genius. Learning not to run away from dissonance in classical music .... it has always seemed right in jazz. Thank you for the timestamps. I'm hearing much which is familiar but did not know its source. .. This quest stems from a RUclips interview with Alex Malofeev, the young prodigy who always mentions Prokofiev. I will listen to your other suggestions, above.
I have just learned about this magnificent composer , a real genius. This work is exhilarating .
🙏❤️🌎🌍🌏🌿🕊🎵🎶🎵💫✨️💫✨️
Prokofiev knows how to touch on every human emotion; frivolity, despair, swooning, anger, giddiness, and provocation. This truly is beautiful music. It doesn't get stale or become overly dramatic. It just captures many moments.
The most underrated classical composer.
That's because he doesn't fit neatly into a box; the same could be said for Leonardo.
The Strauss, Tchaikovsky, Chopin bait that drew our grandparents to "classical"music now has to be replaced by Prokofiev, Shostakovich, Mahler. I defy any reasonably musical modern person to resist the Romeo and Juliet suites here. These "best of" selections offer a great service. Thanks.
❤Mahler is a damn G tho
And henryk goreki❤❤ they f some s up on this classical ish
Prokofiev is a phenomenon among musicians.
His works is the hall - marked
and incomparable .
And the Oscar goes to Sergei Prokofiev. If Stravinsky has his own Hollywood Walk of Fame Star... Prokofiev should have one too. There are two stars added a year and I think Prokofiev, who inspired a whole generation of film composers, should have his own. His music is dramatic, ethereally beautiful, and highly evocative. It is timeless as great music must be.
Sir about Rachmaninoff?
@@valsammajoseph421❤❤Rachmaninov like a mfkr !!!!!❤😊❤😊
Just saw Prokofiev's Romeo & Juliet. It's simply the greatest!
I love Prokofiev's music it absolutely amazing thank you
Condivido love Prokofiev Sharon
Larghetto.....a piece of wonderful music which takes me back to childhood, it was the theme music to THE FLAXTON BOYS and the only piece of classic music i remember being introduced to, it still sends shivers down my spine,!....wonderful, beautiful, enchanting, magical!
how can he be so good and hit you so hard
Prokofiev is one of the best Russian composers, i love Tchaikovsky too, but Prokofiev hits the top for me with his symphonic music, especially Dance of The Knights.
I love both ❤
Very moving. Ive already shed tears on romeo and juliet. Not because it was sad or something. But because it was very beautiful. Pardon me telling my life but this piece of work has struck me
I have this exact same reaction. When I first saw it performed live I started sobbing in the audience. And now as I'm listening to it, I'm feeling the same emotions that are so hard to describe. It's not sadness, I'm just overwhelmed by the beauty.
vlewitus Melancholy perhaps?
I love all Russian composers! Such wealth of wonderful literature and music. Thanks!

I've been hooked ever since Miss Carol played the 3rd movement of the classical symphony in 5th grade.
Bellisima musica! Tenerla es una gloria!!!
Ok c'est bon c'est officiellement Prokofiev mon compositeur préféré !
Superflame le mien aussi..
I enjoy this very much, very civilized, very exquisite.
Heard his music at the Disney Concert Hall with the L.A. Phil. Accoustics and music were memorable.
I'm seriously thinking of getting into a Prokofiev phase. We have all heard his famous pieces now and then (especially around xmas) but this guy has a huge 'back catalogue' and I off to have a good old delve. This music is CLASS!
youandwhosearmy? was thinking about the exact same thing

By any standards the best of Prokofiev must include his 3rd Piano Concerto! It's incredibly beautiful and virtuosic.
What I love about Prokofiev is that his music personifies Russia as a culture, like Wagner to Germany!
+ubbgn he even looks like Putin
+ubbgn IT´S CALLED NATIONALISM DE FALLA IN SPAIN RAVEL IN FRANCE, RESPHIGI IN ITALY, BAX IN U.K
RACHMANINOFF IN RUSSIA ETC.
+Spigazu Well actually Putin looks like Prokofiev, but yeah quite a bit actually.
WAGNER HAS TRADITIONALLY BEEN ACCUSED OF ANTI SEMITISM MERELY BECAUSE HE WAS A GERMAN.
BUT IS THERE ANY RACE LIKE THE ISRAELIS WHO ARE MORE RACIST AGAINST THE SEMETIC PALESTINIANS, LEBANESE, IN LANDS WHICH THE JEWS STOLE THROUGH BALFOUR?
THE WORLD HAS FINALLY SEEN THROUGH THIS JEWISH LIE, WHICH MAKES APPLYING IT TO WAGNER IS ABSURD AND HYPROTICAL.
AND ALL THE GREAT JEWISH CONDUCTORS AND MUSICIANS IN THE WORLD LOVE TO PERFORM WAGNER. STRANGE?
MAYBE A WAGNER KNEW SOMETHING ABOUT MENDELSSOHN THAT YOU DON´T.
One of the most beautiful symphonies by Prokofiev in my opinion. Symphony No. 1 in D major, or "The Classical Symphony"
People can be so stupid at times, fighting over which genre or artist is better than the other, some even saying they're better than the artists they critic, and I'm here, enjoying the kind of music I like and just ignoring the rest, they are honestly just loosing their time, instead of being happy, instead of being calm and relaxed, they foolishly choose to rather critic and be angry at anything that's not their taste.
+Agent Blowfish The "I know best" angry brigade. As if it matters, live, enjoy what makes you tick, die. Ignore drivel.

Admiro bastante a Prokofiev.
I love everyone's 💓 of Prokofiev
this guy is amazing
oOoOoOoOoO The best recording of Romeu a Julieta out there.
He is fiesty and passionate fierce and blustery wild and winding like the russian winter deep in a wooded forest. I like it DA DA!
So great!
me qudo sin palabras con esta obra ................... puedo sentir el drama en la piel.....
Sad no one listens to this man of music anymore. People now only know Mozart and Beethoven.
Mozart and Beethoven are boring, I rather listen to Wagner, Brahms, Satie or Shostakovic, now I've discovered Prokfiev's music.
Come now..don't generalize good Sir. There are still a lot of us out there who appreciate the epic remnants of the ever so nuanced 20'th century.
My my, this is delightful!!
Marvel splendor beauty Prokofiev music, darling lady
Tout à l'extérieur, rien à l'intérieur.... Le roi de l'esbrouffe.... Le Wald Disney de la musique..... Ceci dit quel artiste !
Ahah !
I just wish they would put in time stamps or some other way to tell the tracks apart. That would be nice for the people that aren't as experienced with Prokofiev's works.
Ya'll sleepin' on this cat homie.
Just kidding, I don't really talk/type like that.
But the message remains the same:
Mozart, Bach, Beethoven, Chopin, Vivaldi, Tchaikovsky, etc...are always mentioned or talked about by radio DJ's or classical music fans---but not too many ever mention Prokofiev.
He's an absolute giant.
Rachmaninov as well...good lord I love the Russian composers. There's some deep stuff going on---hidden within in their music.
Hard to explain.
And you sir forgot STAVINSKY
I assume you mean Stravinsky?
True.
He's also a beast. The Rite of Spring.
Enough said.
I absolutely agree!!! There is a kind of melancholy in the russian classical music. It is so powerfull and deep. I also love Musorgskys "Great Gate of Kiew".
Stephan Mörs
Thank you for reminding me about the Great Gate of Kiev...what a sound!
Listening to it right now via RUclips.
Powerful feelings.
You are right, Justin. Russian art is larger than any other countries.
Espectacular compositor de todos los tiempos ¡¡¡¡
+Santiago Key estoy de acuerdo
I think that this is my favourite composer of all time
Where does Prokofiev music stand today? It's excellent
Can I point out the absence of Violin Concerto No 1 and Piano Concerto No 3. These in addition are also some of Prokofiev's best.
Essas musicas me fazem arrepiar
I love too Prokofiev :D
great melodies going on here...
I love it how the description is in Portuguese
Mijn favoriete componist
prokofiev e genial
Yet it remains that this is what I would call "light" Prokofiev. I'd consider Prokofiev's style not being these 3 pieces (which I do not dislike) compared to other pieces he made. If you're interested into a bit more Prokofiev I'd recommend you taking a look at a bit less popular pieces such as his Sonatas for Piano, or his Concerto for Violin/Piano, his 2nd symphony (my favourite) and his 3rd. These are of course harder to listen to but I personally am huge admirator of Prokofiev and he's my favourite composer by far.
Sure, you can't say you know deeply a composer just by a top 3 or 5. But I'm just trying to say that especially for this one, it's just not Prokofiev's style. But I appreciate you took the time to share your opinion :)

Prokofiev have both, modern&roman. I like it.
brilliant
Thank you for posting this.
Montecchios e Capulettos magno! that song remember me in some notes to Wagner.

Death metal band Necrophagist plays a part of the Dance of the Knights with 33 seconds left in their song "Only Ash Remains." It's a cool bit that adds to the whole "possession" vibe of the lyrics.

I catch myself each time I think 'This is just like James Horner/John Williams,' because this is undoubtedly older material. Surely inspirational for the 2 who are but a pair in a very long list.
This is stuff is grand.
check out Gustav Holst too
1. Dance of the Knights 0:00
2. A Jovem Julieta 5:28
8:45
3. Frei Lorenzo 9:40
0:00 is NOT Dance of the Knights, 1:12 is.
wow , scary awesome
This music fascinating..
real russian music
Come to think of it, I believe Copland was influenced by Prokofiev. Great similarities.
The song at 55 mins is the same one Sting interpreted on his song 'Russians' except Sting's version is bigger and more dramatic which I prefer. The live version of that song at Berlin with the symphony orchestra which is on his DVD Live in Berlin is amazing!
LOVE IT!
It's creepy that the picture is just staring at you.
Can you add timestamps to the beginnings of the songs in the description?
1.18 - here we go - dark, turgid, ominous, - this is it.
LEGENDARY RUSSAIN PEOPLE
Wrote brilliant music and had a sexy Mrs. 'til he dumped her for someone else. And probably the most loved composer for the prog rockers in the late 60s/70s.
Grande!!!
nice!
I miss more from Alexander Nevsky music, of Peter and the Wolf and Ivan the Terrible - if it was not composed by Schostakovich
I love prokofiev, im 13 and the only one in my class who likes this

Besides being an incredible composer. Looks very much like Putin. With that being said he's amazing incredible and above and beyond the best.
Prokofiev : 🎶 ♥️
8:45 - 8:53 , we can clearly see where Svetlanov went to get the inspiration for the beginning of his piano concerto :)
At the 32:28 mark, one can hear how film composer James Horner was influenced by Prokofiev when he composed the score for 'Star Trek III: The Search for Spock', especially during the sequence when a destroyed Enterprise was hurtling towards the unstable Genesis planet.
TorontoJon do you know the name of the song at that minute?
palefish, I presume the Prokofiev tune at 32:28 is 'Romeu Diante do Cadáver de Julieta'.
Phénoménal...
Opinion
1.A view or judgment formed about something, not necessarily based on fact or knowledge.
Hate to argue on such a lovely video and even though I'm not sure why people insist on replying on my first comment I must defend myself when I am correct.
feels like this composer has two personalities.
id say psychotic actually
well i just couldnt agree more
Ati Pan There is a controversy in every human
Jasen Dimitrov there is no doubtf for that. in this case tho its just too intense.
Just wonder if its commonly known. Prokofiev died same day as Stalin. March 5, 1953. All newspaper pages addressed the death of the dictator. Progofiev got just a few lines on the last page.
hahah achei o som de fundo no raleigh soliloquy pt1 do Sublime! q manero

Could you please add the 'time-stamps' to the track numbers? A beautiful ensemble, nonetheless. Thank you.
I'm in heaven
Dance of the knights belong in a game or movie with epic sword battling and magic and such.
Does anyone know..
The name of the song..
That is probably done by this person..
That is in Party Like a Russian.....?
(I'm sorry)
Dance of the Knights lol
timenotes would be great in the description :/
What piece starts playing at 12:25 ?
actually, it belongs in a symphony inspired by said play. Romeo and Juliet predates Prokofiev by a long time. Either way though, this music is EPIC!
what is the beginning piece from ?
22:50 best part
Favourite starts at 59:24
It is readily apparent that James Horner received a large part of his inspiration from Prokofiev. Just go listen to the original Land Before Time soundtrack after this.
***** and Sting too. He used the part at 56:00 for his (1985?) hit Russians.
*****: James Horner may have been Prokofiev reincarnated. Here are the numbers:
James Horner was born in 1953.
Sergei Prokofiev died in 1953.
Horner lived 61 years 10 months and 9 days
Prokofiev lived 61 years 10 months and 11 days
Horner has two daughters
Prokofiev had two sons
Both men wrote powerful epic film scores based on war and redemption:
Horner: Braveheart, Glory
Prokofiev: Alexander Nevsky
Both men were enthusiasts:
Prokofiev loved automobiles
Horner loved airplanes
Marc Parella
If your information is accurate--I don't have the time to verify it now--that is quite interesting.
Did it begin with the music of the film Alexander Nevsky?
