Toyota has never been "all" Toyota. They've always partnered with some other other manufacturer to build their high end cars, mainly partnering with Yamaha as their engine builders.
@@NigelEharis I don't get your logic. Almost all Japanese manufacturers develop their own engines. Toyota seems to always buy their engines from other companies, and the ones they do build are under powered econoboxes.
I mean they don't make thier own transmission either. But I mean if you own a large portion of a company and decide what they do, is it really your or not dunno 🤔
These days it’s safety and fuel regs. A lot of cool designs aren’t aerodynamic enough to make the mpgs or safe enough to pass pedestrian impact requirements. Also money a lot of really cool designs could be made they just aren’t cost effective
I love these illustrations of both the MR2 and Celica. These designs look perfect. The fact that they will be gas-powered and a 6 speed manual option is a slam dunk. Damn Toyota is kicking ass!
I hope the MR2 doesn’t look like all these modern sports cars. They all look ugly and soulless. I would like to see the new MR2 to take inspiration from the 90s look of the sw20
Lots of strange incorrect information here. The GR Corolla is getting the same 8 speed auto as the GR Yaris, it's the same power train. The engine going into the speculated MR2 and Celica replacements is the already published new Toyota 2.0. The pricing was in the article but roughly $70k for the MR2 and $50k for the Celica. Who knows ultimately though regarding hybrid or drive wheels in the end as it makes little sense to do an AWD MR2 if not hybrid front drive. Adds excess weight, complication and 400hp isn't so much the rears couldn't handle it. Celica it makes sense though. Though you have to wonder how many they expect to sell, the Twins sell 6-10k a year and Toyota has seemingly said a version of that is staying around. Supra will barely break 3k units this year, if that. GR Corolla sold 5300 units. This is a lot of investment for two cars that will struggle to sell 5k a year through the model life.
There's a video of the new engine 2.0 that's gonna be placed in to the new MR2 being tested in what is looks like the new IS. And it sounds way too good, so yes is a new engine Toyota is developing
I think this might be incorrect. Pretty sure they’re both gonna be hybrid AWD vehicles. So, instead of a heavy shaft and mid differential with extra friction and power loss, it’s going to be just electric power to the other two wheels. Maybe not, who knows.
The issue with the Supra is that it’s part BMW. Most of the Toyota crowd seems to want Toyota or if it’s another manufacturer at least one that is easier to work on. I could see dealers flat out refusing to work on the new Supras in my the future and finding a good shop to fix them could be difficult. Toyota specialty shops aren’t going to want to mess with a BMW. Maybe the BMW shops?
Yeah but you get no storage space at all. Even an MX-5/Miata has a usable boot, but unless a new MR2 is the length of the first NSX you won't get that.
The new celics fits the bill if one is searching for a practical sports car. But yeah something about impractical sports car being desirable to me. Suits my need of wanting it only for track use or moderate solo spirited driving.
@@iJakku I think I'm biased lol. I have a 7th gen Celica, with the ability to buy an SW20 Turbo but I'm saving for a GT86 instead. The lack of storage space or not being able to fit my Mum or Sister in the back of my car seems like too much of a compromise to me. Mid engined also seems like it would just be less fun than an FR layout car
There's also rumors about the SF-R coming out as well a competitor to the Miata. Personally I think it's much more likely that the 86 and the Supra will end development in 2026 with the release of the three new cars. The Z4 is doing worse than the Supra and the 86 isn't doing amazing either despite outselling the BRZ. The all Toyota lineup seems to make the most sense and the 86 and Supra despite being great cars would be directly competing with new cars. As a current A90 supra owner the MR2 is a very compelling option for me to make a switch.
Hoping for both and the exteriors close to these leaks. If Toyo can keep price under $44K then they will have winners. If close to Supra, Nismo and Vette prices - then a fail.
If toyota can actually pull this off as is speculated, they will secure their spot as my favorite of the modern japanese automakers. An actual engine with no hybrid crap, a manual transmission, and made all in house. That would be insane! It also sounds too good to be true in this market so I'm not gonna get my hopes too high.

@NigelEharis correct, and those Celicas that were not the GT-FOUR did not weigh 3300s, they were in the 2300 lbs range.
